  1. We can only hope that the Sioux peak in their 5th and 6th years of transition, not in the meaningless 3rd and 4th years like the Bye-sin did. :(

I would suspect most Sioux fans would be very happy to have a move to DI as successful as the Bison have had. But, then, I guess your remark is about what one would expect from a pizza delivery guy......not much vision there at all.

  2. OUCH! If I lived in Fargo I'd GOUGE them selling in my new business....

    PITCHFORKS 'n HAY R us! :(:(

can't wait for the "MOValley conference is SO TOUGH" whining to begin.... I'm sure it's coming...

Nope, it isn't coming. I was at the game and the Bison are horrid, led by Mertens. The bad thing for the Herd is Jackson must not be an option for QB either because I can't imagine the coaches not giving him a shot at a series or two. Two words come to mind.....overrated and overhyped. WYO out...........

  3. Congrats on the Hawaii game.....that would be a great road trip. You will need to allocate atleast one week for that one! Also a $750,000 pay day isn't that bad for a WAC school. NDSU only got $275,000 for traveling to Wyoming. Schools like Texas, Ohio State and Michigan are where the huge money is.

  4. If you're talking dollars then you're wrong UND funded 59.5 scholarships this season and will fund 63 next season. If you're talking talent with a full 63 scholarships of D-1 caliber players and depth then you're probably correct. With the way Bison fans play loose with the facts on this website I just want to make sure your being factual with your criticisms. UND is new to D-I and this game proves that we still have some areas to improve upon and that's what the transition is for. Overall I still believe we're ahead of NDSU at a similar point in the transition. We have the opportunity to be force to be reckoned with in FCS football we just need to give Mussman a couple recruiting classes and then you'll really start to see us break through.

Yes, I said depth..... :) You are a bit defensive it seems......but so be it....I was just pointing out the huge difference between playing a DI schedule versus a D2 schedule, and this year UND is not playing a full DI schedule. But, the DI games you have are a significant level above D2 competition. UND had a hell of a comeback last night. Now.....go focus on controling your paranoia any time a Bison fan posts...

  5. The bottom line, FCS is a lot tougher day in and day out than D2. Also, it will be a couple years until you are up to 63 scholies. The depth issue is huge. I listened to the last qtr. and a half and UND put up a hell of a fight. The Louisiana announcers thought SELA was going to tank and loose it.

  6. As much as I wanted them to move up together, I'm starting to think even if all four dakota schools moved at the same time, they probably wouldn't be together today anyway. None of the individual schools would want to wait for a newly formed conference to get their own autobid. As soon as one or two were offered a spot in the summit/gateway/big sky/etc any comraderie would have fallen away.

    Very true.......

  7. What the hell, UND will likely get killed, but for the exposure and a $350,000 payday, it is a smart move. And.....it is way better than all those stupid opening games against Crookston. Good move by UND in scheduling this one.

  8. So UND is done hunting, right? There is no way we will ever find a 5x5, we're stuck with this 4x4 forever.

That is what I don't understand about NDSU fans. NDSU found a conference within 5 years but there is no way in hell that UND is going to find one, they're screwed. Like its a race to NDSU or something. I am fairly confident these two schools are going to be around for a long long time to come.

With the moratorium on DI moves, I think UND is not at all in a good position to try and get in to an established conference. Because of this the Administration at UND realized that they had to do something, and so you see the resulting GWC. It is like going to bed with the fat girl.......you are getting something........and as long as you don't turn on the lights........and if you really use your imagination.....it is kinda the same........

  9. DakotaDan enumerates the reasoning very well.

With the moratorium in place for three more years, the possible conference invites may be limited. At this point the GWC makes sense. If an opportunity does arise, UND may have to pony up with exit fees.

I think some of the Bison fans were hopeful and predicting that UND would be in "independent hell" for quite some time. Check out Bisonville. I think someone peed in their Cheerios.

There is not really any difference between the GWC and being independent other than filling your schedule with sub par teams like NJIT. It is the same thing we had.....marginal teams and no auto bid......everyone looking for a better conference or alliance.......that is basically the same as independent hell......and there is always some company in independent hell. No piss in my cherios.....just some laughing at folks that try to make it out to be much much more than it is......

  10. My own personal rooting interest aside... UND is the flagship public university, NDSU is the agricultural college.

What one do you go to to learn how to deliver pizzas??

  11. I thought you guys might like to see a post from 2003 about the Great West Football Conference, is is entertaining to go back and read some of these.....a lot of UND fans thought the same way......now what happened?? It can't be that oil and travel got a lot cheaper......

    Based on the above ....

    For football:

    NDSU, Fargo, ND

    UNC, Greeley, CO

South Dakota State University, Brookings, SD

Southern Utah State College, Cedar City, UT

    University of California-Davis, CA

    Cal Poly-San Louis Obispo, CA

    St. Mary

  12. There's always a buyout, and it won't be $500,000.

I would be surprized if there was much of a buyout. In reality this conference is nothing more that a scheduling alliance and I would doubt UND woul have ever agreed to a painful out. There are no autobids at stake here at all.

I would suspect that all members are going to be trying to find more attractive homes, but with the moratorium on moves, this was a wedding made out of neccesity. The near term holds little or no promise of conference instability and moves. The fotball side of the conference has good teams, the all other sports part has a rather motley collection of schools. Schools that I suspect UND would not like to be associated with over the long term, but it will help fill a schedule and give the teams something to compete for during the long period of no post season.

It is like that old country western song says, "The girls all get prettier at closin' time......they all begin to look like movie stars......"

  13. Amen to that. Sometimes it felt lonely around here. Sounds like Kelley has a better understanding of how athletics contributes to the grand scheme of things.

Kelley seems like a top notch guy......

  14. If Dave K and his fellow Sioux fans have to retreat to that silly "Flagship" argument....then you guys have lost the battle already. You ought to be debating how to upgrade marketing for the Sioux......and folks, it is an uphill battle for you. You have 1 DI school at home (and it is a cupcake), the rest of your home games are nothing horribly exciting. (By the way.....NDSU had 4 DI games at home in 2004). UND is coming off of one of the least visionary leadership periods in North Dakota history with the duo of Kuppy and RT. So, If I were a professional pizza man that was a UND fan, I would be worried about ticket sales and promotion......not a silly flagship argument....... :D

UND also ought to be buying some time on FSN and get some games on the TV regionally......SIU would be a great one to do that with......

    Oh......and I know......you got hockey...... :D

  15. How do you come up with 5? I counted 6... Idaho State, Southeastern Louisiana, Cal-Davis, Southern Illinois, Southern Utah, and USD. As for the 9 I-AA opponents that NDSU had in '04, you know as well as I do that some of them (especially Valpo) were inferior to strong D2 programs like SCSU and Texas A&M-KIngsville that are on UND's '08 schedule. All things considered, nobody is going to have a stellar schedule in their 1st year of I-AA. My personal bias aside... UND's '08 schedule, overall, is about equal to NDSU's '04 schedule.

I missed SE Louisiana.....That is still 6 compared to 9.....and yes, Valpo was a give me. So we can call it 8.5 to 6.

  16. Do you remember the pathetic schedule NDSU had their first year in I-AA? At least we don't have a game against Valpo. :D

    UND > NDSU

Dave...the year one schedule at NDSU (the year after transition) had more DI competition that the UND schedule...NDSU had 9, so far it looks like UND has 5. You need to deal with reality.

  17. When NDSU transitioned, it managed to build excitement around unknown I-AA teams coming to town while being just 70 miles away from a recent D-II national champion playing in the toughest conference in D-II and being competitive in the playoffs annually. It did so by convincing Fargoans that it was an exciting time to be an NDSU fan.

There's no doubt UND can't play the "I-AA/FCS in N.D. for the first time" card that NDSU did, but I don't think that's what we're talking about. I'm talking about building excitement among the faithful about this big transition in UND athletics history. Let people who are already predisposed to be Sioux fans know that there's a new coach, new division, new opponents, and that it's an exciting and important time to support the team and be a Sioux fan.

Now, I do think in the long run it's a smart strategy to try to attract more neutral North Dakotans who already have some interest in UND because they follow its D-I hockey success, but we all already know that marketing only goes so far and that a winning product would be a big key to that equation. Just because we can't control the latter yet is no reason to abdicate on the former.

I do think that to develop and fund a DI program, UND needs more than the faithful. UND needs to deepen its fan base for Football and Basketball. That task is made more difficult by the success at NDSU. And....I do agree totally that UND has to significantly ratchet up the marketing if the Alerus is going to ever sell out. Also....tailgating and tailgating atmosphere is huge in development of a football following. I think that a huge part of the reason I will fly back to Fargo for a ball game is the fun that is had at the tailgates and seeing the latest and greatest tailgate rigs. Tailgating is a huge part of the DI sales job.

  18. The biggest battle UND will be fighting is the fact that there will be a full fledged and playoff eligible university playing in the toughest conference in the nation just 70 miles south of you. That is what Kuppy and RT cost UND by not moving upwith the Bison. It was a much easier sell for NDSU because it was the only DI game in the state..........

  19. This thread is dumb!! I do not see either school playing each other in the future and when they do it will be an every other year deal (for sure!!). I thought the Bison were looking for bigger and better things! Next thing you know Bison fans will talking about the Sioux Gophers hockey series being moved to Denver so more alumni of each school can go. And maybe St. Cloud and Mankato can play in Bismarck.

Do not lump us in with the crazy stuff that Mpls comes up with. Anyone that is in the know with Bison Athletics knows that this is just some irrational dude's wet dream.
