  1. I hate to come in here breaking face like this but speaking as a long time UND fan I feel this move to Division 1 will cripple our football program. I'm not saying we'll get to an Idaho State level but I wouldn't be suprised to see 4-7, 5-6 type records for the years to come. Let's look at the facts, recruiting is taking a major hit in this transition. Why would a football player choose to come to a school that blatantly supports hockey over football when he can go one hour down the road to NDSU where football is "God"? If the recruiting isn't up to snuff the wins aren't going to follow. I may be seeing this far too pessimistically but what would draw football recruits to UND right now? Is it the lack of playoff eligibility, the 7500 person crowds, the losses to NAIA schools, the Alerus Center? Personally I don't see us as an attractive football school right now, for our sake I hope I'm wrong but until then pick up the pieces.......of your broken face!!!!!!!

Recruiting is much more involved than I want to play for a certain team for a single reason. Recruits look at it much differently than fans.

School matters for alot of kids (and parents), especially for kids who know that the NFL payday is a longest of longshots.

Connecting with recruiters on a personal level is significant.

Who offers the most first is bigger than most people realize, kids want to be wanted.

Teams that evaluate well and use time(attention) and money(scholarships) well, will outrecruit many stadiums and fanbases.

See SDSU for proof in this part of the country.

You aren't recruiting against Texas or Florida or USC for players.

I do believe however that there may not be enough population and qualified players for 4 upper echelon D-1AA teams in area, which makes recruiting all that more difficult and spread out geographically, less time seeing and talking to kids in person, more tape and phone calls. Can't drive to Chicago Friday night to watch a game like you can to Detroit Lakes and have people(parents) notice you in bleachers and know who you are there to watch.

  2. I really hate to tell you guys "I told you so", especially when it's so pointless with how bad UND and NDSU have done this season, but....

Iowa State beats Nebraska in Lincoln, 9-7, 2nd place in Big XII North, Colorado in Ames and Missouri in Columbia left (probably 1-1).

Texas tech loses at home to Texas A&M, 52-30, 4th place in BXII South, OK St in Stillwater, Oklahoma in Lubbock and Baylor in Waco left (0-3 or 1-2).

If you have to use pointless to describe your post why bother

  3. Oh you got your D2 rings(bought your own I believe), we got some too.......Hopefully Grand Valley doesnt try to get in your conference cause thats an L for sure every year.....haha..thumbs up!!! ....a team that just got beat by an NAIA and Southern Utah by 25 as no chance to win the league....keep dreaming, if thats what you GF people call a dream....the Sioux are just a bad team in the Mediocre West....

Is this all so you don't have to look at the standings for your league? Last behind the legendary Indiana State.

  4. Get him some Easley Thornton action shots, some KY, and a box of Kleenex and he'll be just fine.

Pathetic life when you have to resort to using 17 year olds playing against Williston to energize yourself about college football.

  5. You don't.

    I do. :)

    From p 47 of 75, indexed as "February 2008"

(Note: At this point the Chapmans are living in a temporary residence in Fargo's Osgood subdivision during construction.)

Chapman had the Foundation buy them a flat screen for the temporary residence?

Sure, it was bought to be relocated to the permanent residence, but just the same, Joe's making $424k and his wife is making another $50k on top of that and they can't buy their own television set?

They have a daughter who's college age. Why not buy your own (interim) set and give it to her for college when you move to the permanent house.

Once had a boss who made over 1 million a year, made a big production about managing expenses particularly travel expense accounts. He always stayed at the same mid-priced hotels as the minions although he didn't have to double up like the rest of us. He usually also traveled with his girlfriend (wife worked for company also) and she stayed at ultra luxury hotel. He was arrogant enough to have the company pay for girlfriend expenses, although he could certainly afford to if he was interested in discretion. Everybody looked other way until new CFO showed up and refused to pay for her expenses. Big shatstorm. The point being it wasn't the money.....he did it for the emotional kick of not having to play by anybody elses rules.

  6. I don't really see the big deal here. Not in the slightest.

    Did he do anything illegal?

[b]I would even go so far as to question if it was unethical.

Like I said, he was worth every penny and then some.

Sounds like my co-worker explaining why cheating on his wife was justified.

    Wasn't illegal, definately worth it.

Not unethical if you knew how much she was worth it.

  7. Which goes back to the question of why do this? Someone within the foundation needs to be fired for releasing this. None of this would be happening if they would have just handled it internally. Something tells me within the coming weeks there is going to be much more information coming out from other people as I have a gut feeling that this is just getting started.

Sometimes you just have to stop the bleeding, you think by letting the status quo continue everybody with knowledge of the situation would come out scot free?

Sometimes it is a greater good motive, sometimes it is a self preservation motive of not wanting to be seen as an enabler of misbehavior with other peoples money.

Maybe someone in the room didn't care who they offended and wanted to do the right thing.

    We may never know.

  8. Chapman was worth it. He should get to have private accounts/expenses like that for the leadership/growth he single handily provided for NDSU.

Ken Lay and Jeff Skilling were worth it, they provided lots of well paid jobs, if nobody would have been nosy, all would be well.

  9. Those things didn't help, for sure.

All I'm saying is with Roehl we win those games and go to the playoffs. 8-3 gets us in over a 7 win team.

And if I was 7'1" I might get paid to play basketball.

  10. General rule of thumb seems to be: $50,000 to bus, $75,000 to fly commercial and $100,000 to fly charter. That includes the hotel stay, meals, etc. The numbers change a little depending on distance, dates, and other stuff, but that's normally what athletic departments in our neck of the woods(ND/SD/MT) seem to say.

Good to know. Thanks for infomation.

  11. You know a 350,000 dollar payout is great, but have you guys thought about the expense to GET down there in the first place? It's probably close to or more than 1/2 of that just to get down there when everything is said and done. Just something to ponder! :silly:

Very very few big football schools that don't involve a plane ride from North Dakota.

Just guessing at number of people and cost. Anybody have more accurate numbers?

    90 people at $500 = $45,000

    350,000-45,000=285,000

  12. We can continue to be a big fish in a small pond at the I-AA level. Granted, I-AA is a slightly bigger pond than D2 but it is much much smaller than D1. However, I don't see anything to be gained for either side in these D1 vs. I-AA matchups.

    Money,

The schools with large home attendance at higher average ticket cost want to have as many home games as possible to increase revenue. Generally they have 4 non-conference games to schedule and want 3 of them at home. Which means you have way too few big teams available to travel. You need teams willing to schedule an away game without needing a home and home arrangement. You pay a team more than they would make having a home game to fill your schedule. Both teams generate revenue to fund the programs.

TT expecting 50,000 at $40 a ticket(guess) is significant revenue for TT and 350K is a nice check to deposit for UND.

  13. Someone please articulate the upside to a 60+ point loss to even a far-superior team? I'm not seeing it.

    350,000 reasons

possibly more recruits from Texas (hundreds of kids who aren't quite good enough for BCS teams)

great experience for fans, players and coaches, its hard to explain unless you've seen it in person

  14. Texas Tech isn't a Top 25 team; nor will they be by the end of the year.

and i don't think it would be a bigger upset than App State beating the rule breaking wolverines in THE BIG HOUSE 108,000 people while they were ranked #3 in the country.

i hope UND competes and makes it a game. No one likes to be embarassed...you guys seem so star struck and already saying how you don't care if you go in there and get raped. I guess maybe i don't have that attitude becuz i follow a FBS team. But i would never want to put my players/coaches/fans in a situation where they know they are going to get killed. I hope Coach Mussman isn't giving that impression to the Sioux

    SI has TT at #23

Must not have been a fan during the Don Morton era at Wisc.

  16. I'd say we could insert UND into any of those outcomes, but I like 52-10. The touchdown comes very late in the game. I don't like this matchup at all in this stage of the transition.

The score of the game itself may not be, but the atmosphere will be great for players, coaches, and fans. Nobody is expecting a close game, nor should it be.

Tech beat Nebraska, Texas, Oklahoma State, Kansas last year.

  17. Two things I tell my girls every morning before school...1) respect your elders and 2) when in doubt take the home underdog! :D

Both these games will be blow-outs...UND just taking a bigger beating!

Tech would probably be favored by about 24-28 over Iowa State right now.

Hope North Dakota beats the spread, but in case you are tempted to bet the house and take the points

Other Tech scores against 1-AA division teams

    2006 SE Louisiana 62-0

    2007 NW Louisiana 75-7

    2008 Massachusetts 56-14

  18. T. Tech's opening game last year was against Eastern Washington. Tech beat Eastern 49-24 and in that game Eastern gained 364 yards.

Eastern and UND had a common opponent last year in Idaho State. The Sioux won in Idaho and Eastern beat Idaho State 45-31 with the game

tied at halftime 21-21. I believe that game was in Washington. I'd like to think UND's program is as good as Eastern'n. As you all know the ?

for UND is do we have any firepower on offense and has the defense improved. Should be fun let's roll.

Tech also had 639 yards offense and Eastern ran for 23 yards in 22 carries. There is going to be a big mismatch of talent on the line of scrimmage.

If North Dakota gets a couple of turnovers, a few big plays on offense and special teams it will be a relatively competitive for a while.

If Tech gets a couple turnovers or big plays early it will get ugly quickly on the scoreboard.

Tech is breaking in a new QB and Leach will want to give him plenty of snaps with Texas game in two weeks. It won't be to run up the score, just giving him as much game experience as possible.

  19. What was the connection to get Bennett to UND? Desoto HS and surrounding area would be a great pipeline to tap into.

Is he a redshirt candidate or will he play right away?

His high school team plays on ESPN Sat night at 6:00. They are loaded with D-1 prospects.

  20. Damn funny SiouxMD. Can't believe someone is complaining about forehead shine.

Mplsbison he is from NDSU, his black and white 13 inch TV only shows grainy 25 year old football games, women he dated in college had skin that looks like thier face started on fire and their mom put it out with a rake. He hasn't seen a good looking women since his grade school music teacher.
