  1. According to the Argus Leader, UND will be paying "pretty close to $60,000" to Sioux Falls for a guarantee next season.
  2. It's difficult to imagine how Douple didn't realize that this is now a non-issue. Heck, since NDSU is governed by the exact same Board of Higher Ed. as we are, in the incredibly unlikely event that the Board decides that UND isn't going to drop the name, doesn't that mean NDSU should be guilty by association and booted from the league?
  3. My guess--and it's strictly a guess--is that we will see a dII opponent for the fifth home game, and will also find one more dI road game to fill out an 11-game schedule. I'm too lazy to go back through this thread, but if memory serves me we now have Sioux Falls, Idaho State, Cal Poly and USD at home; and Texas Tech, Northwestern State, Stephen F. Austin, UC Davis and Southern Utah on the road.
  4. Are you serious? I can't imagine any school in the country would agree to that.
  5. Suite 49 doesn't actually pay UND or the state of North Dakota on a continual basis. Rather, they paid one lump sum to purchase the leasehold interest (essentially a 99-year lease), which can be mortgaged or sold similar to how a fee simple interest can be.
  6. Here are the RPI's of all UND non-transitional dI opponents as of today: 41. Wisconsin-Green Bay (L by 25) 42. Ball State (Jan. 27) 51. Iowa State (L by 30) 85. Arkansas (L by 12) 139. Vermont (Jan. 4) 150. Lamar (W by 14) 202. UC-Riverside (L by 7) 213. Montana State (L by 7) 220. Wyoming (L by 25) 222. Northwestern (L by 2) 236. Eastern Michigan (W by 9) 239. Toledo (L by 8) 296. Northern Arizona (W by 23)
  7. Actually, they lost in the quarterfinals in their last year in dII. That was the year they beat us by 2 in OT in the regional final in St. Paul.
  8. I know many would like to think (and perhaps correctly) that we are simply seeing the difference between a good dII team and a good dI team, and the difference is substantial. But I can't get past the fact that SDSU did not suffer similar growing pains, and is obviously thriving right now. Roebuck was 9-3 vs. Johnston-coached SDSU teams, and SDSU has not really expanded their recruiting base. So how do we explain the now huge difference between us and SDSU? Would Roebuck would be enjoying similar success to Johnston even if the two programs had comparable talent? I'm not looking to be overly critical--just looking for theories, because SDSU's success seems to dispel the notion that a good dII program in the Dakota's can't successfully make the transition fairly quickly.
  9. In a very interesting matchup last night, Ada-Borup, the second-ranked team in MN class A, defeated East Grand Forks, the second-ranked team in class AA. Nicole Smart had 25 points for Ada-Borup.
  10. Is Seay sick or injured? She started and played more than 20 minutes against Seattle Pacific, but played 12 minutes against Northwestern and just 9 minutes yesterday.
  11. USD lost by 20, at home, against Concordia-St. Paul last night.
  12. Isn't it about time the turf was replaced, anyway? I think the typical life span is supposed to be around seven or eight years.
  13. It's tough to be too impressed by the USD women's record given their schedule so far. I don't believe they've played a single dI opponent yet.
  14. UND has committed 50 turnovers over the past two games.
  15. It's hard to be too confident given the fact that the Sioux are coming off a fairly lackluster performance against Seattle Pacific, but this should be UND's best chance to knock off an opponent from a major conference. Northwestern is 3-8, and only beat another transitional program, Houston Baptist, by eight points.
  16. I had to leave at halftime. O.K., I didn't "have to", but struggling for the second game in a row against a DAC opponent was just too much for me to bear.

    UMD Bulldogs

There have been several articles in Minnesota newspapers this past week about UMD running back Isaac Odim, who played a huge role in UMD's turnaround from last year, and in their national championship run. Here's one that was in the Strib yesterday. Interesting reading.
  18. I thought it was ridiculous to make attendance comparisons to past years based upon a combined five home games between the men and women, only one of which (women's game vs. Eastern Michigan) was a matchup that anybody but the hardest of the hardcore fans could possibly care much about. Everybody knew that with such poor home schedules, attendance wasn't going to be good this year. But let's at least wait until we see a few more games against peer opponents, such as USD, before we make any comparisons to past years. In all honesty, besides the January 24 doubleheader vs. USD and the women's game already played vs. Eastern Michigan, are there any games on the schedule that could reasonably be expected to generate any buzz whatsoever? Next year will be better, as some of the dI opponents played on the road this year will be coming to Grand Forks.

A team from the NSIC just won a national championship in dII football. Isn't that one of the signs of the apocalypse?
  20. I definitely agree with you regarding the juco issue for the next several years. But I believe had a player signed prior to last season, he would have been grandfathered in and would have been eligible for this season. The opportunity to play dI competition for a year should have given UND a leg up on most any dII's recruiting the same kid. To the extent there was a failure in juco recruiting, it may have been in not getting a transfer prior to last season who could have given us an inside presence now.
  21. I don't know the answer. I guess the staff needs to do a better job of targeting kids who really want to be here. Even taking Rayfield out of the equation, who was not recruited by Jones, two of the first three Jones high school recruits lasting one season or less is not very good. Agreed. We need to be able to win, and usually in convincing fashion, against NAIA/dIII/less-than-fully-funded dII's. The post situation is also a pet peeve for me. I get somewhat annoyed when the excuse of of Lehnertz's injury is brought up. Ben was a walk-on his first few years in the program. These should not be the types of players who are irreplaceable when they get hurt. Even Valley City had post players who could take up space and score an occasional basket. We are using 6'5" small forwards in the post. Were there no 6'7" jucos who could have provided a band-aid until this year's red-shirts may be ready in a year or two? I remember those days well, and it definitely seems like a long time ago. I look forward to the day when I start going to men's games because I really want to, rather than out of a sense of obligation.
