  1. I couldn't get the link to work to read the rest of the story.

    Here's the full article

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Friday, July 30, 2004

    STARS HEAD COACH CONFIRMS HIS

    RETURN TO LINCOLN

Lincoln Stars Head Coach Steve Johnson will return to coach his ninth

season with the USHL team. Johnson had been considered for an

assistant coaching position with the University of North Dakota, a job

that has since been offered to another candidate.

The Grand Forks native and All-American player for the Fighting Sioux

had also been a candidate for the head coaching job at UND, a position

that was ultimately accepted by their former Associate Head Coach,

Dave Hakstol. As the Stars first and only head coach, Johnson has led

the team to Clark Cup championships in 1997 and 2003, and three

Anderson Cup titles in his eight seasons.

  2. Some nice words about Hale and Martin from G.M. Lou Lamoriello

    ESPN.com Lamoriello Interview

ESPN.com: Which player made the most significant strides in your estimation or had the biggest impact?

Lamoriello: If I have to look back at the end of a season at one or two players that stand out we haven't played the way our system dictates us to play. But our two young defensemen -- David Hale and Paul Martin -- are highlights because they came right out of college and we gave them a Devils uniform and gave them the minutes and the opportunity and they accepted them. And they are both character and quality individuals.

  3. With the move officially announced, now the question is what type of fallout this could have on the North Dakota program.

Sophomore-to-be Drew Stafford, who is also in Raleigh this weekend earmarked as a first-round draft choice, said that Blais' departure could have impact on whether he'll return to Grand Forks for his sophomore year.

"It's a surprise," said Stafford. "It definitely does change things a little for me.

We're all nervous, but next-day indications seem positive. Here's a few quotes from June 26 articles:

Stafford, the Sioux sophomore-to-be who was taken No. 13 overall by Buffalo, also said he was returning to North Dakota, despite Blais' departure.

    from this artlicle: http://www.uscho.com/news/2004/06/26_008570.php

Stafford, who finished his rookie year at UND with 32 points, said he expected to be a high draft pick but plans to return to UND next season.

    and

No matter who ends up with the job, "I have all the faith in the world that we'll be able to continue on and be successful," Stafford said. "We should be front-runners for bringing back the national championship next year."

    and

Brandon Bochenski, an All-American forward last season and a finalist for the Hobey Baker Award given to college hockey's top player, said he also will return to UND.

Bochenski, a 2001 draft pick of the Ottawa Senators, said he wants a national championship in his senior season next year. The Fighting Sioux last season lost to eventual national champion Denver in the NCAA West Regional championship.

  5. ZP was certainly the most visible and reputable Sioux player while wearing the uniform. Hrkac got a lot of attention, but not as much, I don't believe, as ZP. Troy Murray was an excellent 2-way player, but he stayed only 2 years as well. He scored 90+ points and won the Selke with the Blackhawks. Dave Christian arguably had the best NHL career of all Sioux forwards, and don't forget he switched to defense and led Team USA in assists in the 1980 Olympics. Christian was named the Captain of the Winnipeg Jets at age 22 and scored his first goal something like 10 seconds into his first NHL game. He's in the US Hockey Hall of Fame, but his stats as a Sioux don't really jump out. ZP certainly will be mentioned in the same breath as all of the great Sioux players.

One last thought. Do you remember in February when the Sioux were slumping and CB said something like "everybody gets into the habit of standing around and watching Parise and forgeting to play their own game?" Guess that won't happen anymore.

Thanks, ZP, for every shift you skated as a Sioux, for you seemed to skate each one harder than the one before. Good luck w/ NJ.

  6. Hate to say this, but despite having a very good year, this team often didn't seem to display the extra gear needed to close out the third period. Yes they started out dominating the 3rd early in the season, but previous years' title winners never seemed to lose games in the 3rd like this team. In looking at the box scores, they lost or settled for a tie in 6 games where they were either leading or were tied going into the third:

    St. Cloud twice

    Denver twice

    Wisconsin

    Minnesota

I don't remember this sort of this happening to the 1997 or 2000 teams. It runs in my mind that it may have happened once all year in 2000. Just an observation on a very sad night.

p.s. The next few days may bring more bad news for the Sioux, so be ready for early departures.

  7. Sadly no, I think I was more timid this year. Maybe it was the beer WPoS (who somebody mistook for my husband ;) ) gave me midway through the game. ;) I don't know, I think having only 7 skaters last year and a beefy POI guy to goon it up made the Sioux players want it more. The game this year was much more friendly. Anyway, I blame the score on the reffing. ;) Actually, and this may be my own biased thinking, but I'm sure if the Sioux players all lived in the same area and could practice on a regular basis like the POI team, the game would be much much closer. It's hard to throw a bunch of guys together who don't even know each other's names.

It was a good time though. Fire Chartreuse Musky Killer had a hat trick for SiouxSports, and a bunch of us went out to Old Chicago afterward for a beer and to watch the NCAA selection. I heard it tossed around a bit, but there needs to be some sort of trophy for this game if we keep doing it. If my team was playing for a rusty beer mug or something, I'd start training in May. ;)

I tried taking a few pictures during the game, but I don't have a digital camera so who knows when I'll get them developed or if they'll turn out. PCM needs to go to these games and cover the media aspect so I can focus my talents on opening and closing the door on the bench. ;) And no team picture this year.

Seeing as how the (real) Sioux only play the (real) Gophers in Grand Forks next year, it would be fun to have a warm up game that weekend in Grand Forks if enough people come to the game.

Thanks to all the guys who played in the game! Even though I don't actually play, it's still fun to watch.

I think we were a little like the 1980 US team when they played the Soviets at Madison Square Garden shortly before the Olympics. Not that I'm necessarily drawing parallels to POI and communists ;), but like the US team, we were just kind of thrown together from all parts of the country and didn't really know each other. Whereas POI, like the Soviets, had skated together for decades. They jumped out to an early lead, but we fought back only to lose momentum at the end.

In all seriousness, it was a very fun game. Aside from POI's obvious advantage of having played together (for decades, like the Soviets), SS.com also was saddled with a couple of "fillers," like myself who served no real useful purpose other than to give the core talent a breather and maybe clog up the slot a bit on D. But maybe if Forecheck can find a way to bring us all together as a unit, we can ultimately prevail against The Evil Empire when there's some actual hardware on the line, much the 1980 US team did.

  8. I recall reading last fall that the Minnesota Rule was coming under a lot of heat from the other schools in the league and that they were thinking of scrapping it. Guess they haven't gotten that far yet. Maybe if the Goofs get knocked off by CC on Thursday night and the tournament still draws well...nah, it's still Minnesota and they generally get what they want.

  9. looks like we might get the gophers Friday night . I can`t wait. Are the gophers playing that good or is st. cloud that bad?

STC hasn't won a game in a month. If you look at their season, they didn't win a game against a quality opponent since they beat the Sioux in November. Not to take anything away from the Goofs and how they thrashed them, but STC packed it in a long time ago.

  10. Twelve banners.  Who has more in the WCHA?  Anyone know right off hand?

  11. Who was the guy that used to do the play-by-play in the early 90's?  He then went to MN and then to SCCC I think.  Can't remember his name... I liked him.  But it seemed bad luck followed him everywhere.  As soon as he left UND the Sioux program turned around and MN went in the tank.

I believe it was Dan Tearhar (sp). He does radio stuff now for the Good Neighbor (or Big Neighbor or whatever WCCO calls itself).

  12. Forecheck, I might be able to help y'all out. I'm 41 yrs old and not very good, but I play in a lower-level non-checking league in the Twin Cities and you're game sounds like fun. I suspect everyone plays at a higher level than me, but if your bench is short, I can at least give the first line (or two) a breather. If you need an extra player, you can email me at dlveer@yahoo.com.

  13. Nothing about Spirko on Heisenberg as of 8:37 p.m. tonite, but it does show Siembida catching on with Quinnipiac. Based on the 2001 GL Invitational alone, I wish him all the best.
