  1. I was listening to WCCO radio this morning in the car and heard Don Lucia say that there was serious discussion of a BTHC this summer and that it was "a lot closer to happening than most people know." He said (and I'm paraphrasing based on memory) that there was one school in particular that was really driving it and Minnesota was the main hold out to keep it from happening. We pretty much knew all of that, but the seriousness placed on it by the Don was interesting.

BTN basically now holds the purse strings of the Big 10 institutions. They hold the rights to broadcast all sporting events for all of the schools, and they REALLY want college hockey to fill the black hole they currently have on Friday nights during the winter months.

If they can find one more school to commit to a D1 hockey program (at least 2 could make the move rather easily), there is NO doubt that the Big 10 Hockey Conference would become a reality very quickly.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out, especially with Alverez making a real serious push for it.

  2. I'm not sure you can really say this is true. It's obviously heavily marketed towards the host team. Also the host teams' fans know that they will be in that regional if they make the NCAA's. Makes it a much easier decision to buy those regional tickets.

When Denver hosted the regional before the Frozen Four you had to buy like two regional tickets to be able to get an option to buy a frozen four ticket.

Not sure how they would have done that. The regional tickets sales are handled by the host school. where the Frozen Four tickets are available ONLY through the lottery system run by the NCAA. Denver would have had NO control concerning the Frozen Four tickets.

Regarding the Final Five. Every WCHA school has the oppertunity to bid for the tournament. I have no idea how many do, but if you recall the few years where the tournament alternated between Minnesota (St Paul Civic Center & Target Center) and Wisconsin (Bradley Center), the attendance in Wisconsin wasn't very good. Badger games didn't sell out, or even come close. So, keeping in mind the goal of the Final Five is to make money for the WCHA, where else should this tournament be held ?

  3. Thanks Rick, it was Chucko who I was trying to think of earlier. Another big forward like Tallackson and Wheeler who didn't develop under Lucia and company. Eric Johnson had to leave early too so he could get proper coaching, forgot about that one already. Remember Jake Taylor? A few years of good development and he'd be a much better player now too. To an extent I am flaming the gophers because I really don't like them. Honestly though, there is enough material out there that Lucia and staff are not developing players adequately...I believe there are some pretty large problems at the U of MN-TC, and some healthy, mature dialogue about these problems is warranted.

So.....among all of those players that you have listed that have been out of the MN system for a while (Chucko, Tallackson, and Taylor), which of these guys has lit the world on fire since they had "good development" with better coaches ?

  4. Does not matter what they offered him, did they keep him? Uh No! There for they must not have wanted him too bad!

It was Wheeler's choice not to sign, and become a free agent, had nothing with the 'Yotes 'not wanting him'.

It does seem a curious choice on Wheeler's part. Can only assume he had some kind of issue with the organization, and just did not want to be a part of it.

  5. Taken the summer of 2006. They still felt very embarassed and were 'feeling shame'. That's why they didn't say anything. :)

Can you imagine any school letting someone put the jersey from a team who beat them in the regional playoffs or anytime on their mascot!! Oh wait....

I guess i am not clear as to why that was supposed to upset anyone...........

  6. Guentzel was forced out.

On a related note, he told his kid that he wasn't good enough to play D-1 hockey that he should play DIII hockey in Wisconsin instead of taking the half scholarship at Notre Dame. Classy.

14 years as an assistant coach is a lifetime in college hockey, and Guentzel has always said he wants to be a head coach. It really is as simple as that. The meeting between Lucia and Guentzel had more to do with how long Lucia planned on staying than Guentzel staying.

As far as Ryan being at Notre Dame, he is there BECAUSE of his father, not in spite of him.

  7. After watching that goal, I took a step back and started to think about this rule. I have played hockey since I was about 5 years old, and played through the college level. This rule always seemed "right" to me, and thinking about it I guess I don't know why. Maybe the reason was just because that's how it always has been - you can't score a goal by kicking the puck in, and everyone accepted that as how it was. But the more I think about it, the more this seems to be a dumb rule.

Imagine if it was illegal to kick the puck at all...you can't kick the puck to your stick, you can't kick the puck to a teammate. If you do, they blow the play dead and there's a faceoff. What is OK about kicking the puck at any time during a game, but it is not right or not legal if you kick it into the net? It makes sense to me that you can't use your hands to score or carry the puck - if you could the only way to stop someone would be to tackle them - but why can't you kick the puck into the net?

If a defenseman ties up the forward's stick in front of the net, is there something wrong with them kicking the puck into the net? I, for one, think that this rule needs to be changed. We allow goals that ricochet off of a player's equipment. Heck, it's even a goal if the puck goes off the player's skate as long as he doesn't make a "kicking motion". So a player can change the angle of his skate to guide the puck in, as long as he doesn't kick at it. It just makes sense to me that if a goal is scored in any way except by throwing the puck in with your hand, it should be a goal.

And realistically, how many goals during the course of the year would this affect? This year UND played 43 games. I'd venture to say that if kicking the puck in was allowed, this would affect maybe 5 goals max for or against the Sioux in a season.

Good argument..............in every situation, it is legal to use a kick to move the puck.........except when you kick into the net.

  8. Just wanted to congratulate your boys on another great run in the 2nd half of the season, and another Frozen Four.

Maybe some day you'll get a draw that doesn't include BC.

It was something to see all of the Sioux fans at the Pepsi Center on Thursday, there was certainly more green than any other color in the arena, a real testament to your fans. Not real keen on all of those high school age kids wandering around with the "FUBC" t-shirts.......

Got to meet a lot of good people, and a great time with fans from all over the country including a LOT of really great fans from North Dakota.

Hate to wish the summer away........but can't wait till October, and we can get started on another college hockey season............things should be pretty interesting next year.

  9. You forget, Gretzky loves the development of college hockey for players. That's the reason he's given or at least Gopher fans have given for Wheeler to still be in Gopherville. It certainly couldn't be that Wheeler just isn't good enough to make the jump yet. I wonder what excuse Gopher fans will come up with now that Turris left and Wheeler is still there since the excuse that Gretzky loves college hockey doesn't hold much water anymore. Some people (Gopher fans) are naive but those comments by Gretzky saying he loves the development of college hockey is purely PR in the case of Wheeler.....I mean what else is Gretzky going to publicly say.

And add on top of that the fact that Wheeler looks likely to be the first top five pick in quite a lot of years to be in college all four years. Yup, Wheeler's a stud.:D;)

The biggest difference between the 2 is that Turris wanted to sign, and Wheeler wanted his degree first. He is on schedule to do that by the end of this term. Believe or not, some of this guys actually DO care about getting an education as well.

  10. Best Final Five for the gopher fans around us as well. A couple of pretty decent guys right behind us, and on Saturday one of them had his gal and his 2 young kids with them. They were a blast!

Got a couple of seconds of "I'm Not Hostile Or Abusive" on the big screen. Been waiting a couple of years for that opportunity.

    That was pretty good.........

  11. According to Brad's Blog, the press conference made it sound like Wiley is having a terrible time with the incident, I also wish him the best.

I am sure that Jason Wiley feels horrible about what happened. If anyone has ever spent any time with kid, they would know that there is NO WAY that he would ever put himself in position to hurt another player. He is about as mild mannered as he could be, and always plays the game the right way.

There was nothing intentional about happened, and what really caused the problem was when Wiley's eldow caught on Pohl's helmet and it came off.

Great to hear that all of Tom P's issues seem to cleared up..............and hop e that Jason W will get over it too.

  12. Looks like we definitely disagree! When you say cursing is something that affects others, I don't know how you can ignore those that see you flipping the bird and not say that's the same thing.

Again, when you fly the bird you are cursing out that individual, saying "f you". If Hak says "f that" or "that's fing baloney" no one cares. But if he yells "f you Adam!" it's the same thing, except only Adam and the players here him (unless he's on tv). But when he flies the bird the whole arena can see it.

So yes, to me, there's quite a difference.

You right........when a coach yells at a ref "there's no f'n way thats a penalty", that just fine. BUT, when he makes it personal, by saying "F you', or gives him the finger (which I think is the exact same thing), that coach is going to get tossed regardless of what sport it is or what level.

  13. 1. 99.99999% of Fighting Sioux hockey fans agree, it was a stupid move by Hak.

    2. '....follow him for the rest of his life.' I can just hear a conversation ten years from now, "Just read another article on Hakstol, the coach who took the Sioux to the Final Four the first 3 (4, 5, 6, etc) years he was coach at UND. Oh yeah and remember that horrible, career ending bird he flipped to the ref, what's his name, the guy working at MacDonald's, you know who I mean...'

Afro, I posted a couple of links for you about coaches flipping the bird. Neither one was Knight. I don't believe either one is in prison, living under a bridge or serving fries at a fast food establishment.

I have to believe that Hakstol would get suspended 1 game for this.

If Hakstol had SAID that to Adams, he would have been kicked off of the bench for the rest of the game.

Suspend him, and forget about it............not that big of a deal.

  14. He's made a mistake in his life.

    He's getting another chance.

I'm more interested in what he's going to do with that second chance than the mistake he made.

Best post on here. THe common theme here is that EVRYONE makes mistakes. The real issue is how you deal with these mistakes. At the end of the day, it's going to be up to Nate to decide which way he wants this thing to go.

But, at the same time, remember, that people always have choices to make. In this case he made a choice to put himself in that position. Hopefully, he will now make the right the choice, and do what what is neccesary to live a good and productive life. Some people choose to do that, sadly, a lot people choose not too.

  15. This is an un-researched guess - - Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin. (Pattern here...?...)

Never looked at that before, but you are dead on. I just looked at this schedules for all of the 5 Big Ten schools that have D1 hockey, and Ohio State went to Minnesota earlier this year, and thats it. You have to remember that most place, hockey does NOT generate. Football and basketball are the sole sources of income for most athletic departments (outside of donations), so in order for a athletic department to operate in the black, these 2 sports must support x amount of other non-revenue generating sports, and that is VERY tough thing to do.

  16. what a embarrasing thing to read, wow. i always wondered why the gophs never go out east to take on bc, unh ect..or michigan or much st in their barns and im not talking about tourneys. this sums a lot of questions up for me why gophers neevr go play non wcha games anywhere. its always tourneys at the X or mariucci tourneys when they play michigan or bc or the tourney in michigan some years. what a joke.

Counldn't agree more, it is embarrassing. The only exception is the College Hockey Showcase over the Thankgiving week-end against Michigan and Michigan State, where they only have travel every other year.

  17. How much impact did building a second hockey arena on campus affect Minnesota's budget?

That was just plain stupid !! But, because of the day and age that we live in, that became a "gender equality" issue. Technically, Ridder Arena is the womens hockey arena............but beleive me, I hear what your saying !!

  18. So in order to play @ BSU, UMTC would likely have to get a waiver from their own athletic department! Gee, sure sounds like an impenetrable barrier to me.

Actually it IS an impenetratable barrier. The UM Athletic Department (aka. Joel Maturi) does not allow the hockey team to travel for ANY games, other WCHA games, or post season games. Stupid ?? Yes. But it is done, according to Maturi, to help balance the budget, which takes a huge hit in football, and in past years, bouncy ball.

  19. Happy it isn't going to happen, not anytime soon. Second why would Michigan, MSU, Minnesota, Wisconsin, OSU want to have a league, one or two of them top schools is going to be on the recieving end of get the snot knocked out of them on a regular basis. The BTN is a pipe dream. I will believe it when I see it. Call me cynical.

I hope your right, because if the BTN does make it (and that's a BIG if), it could get fairly ugly. The Big Ten schools do NOT negotiate seperate contracts for individual sports with the BTN. They have carte blanche, given them all the rights to all of the sports, although it does not supercede existing contracts, which really only come into play nationally for football and basketball. However, the Gopher hockey contract with FSN runs out next year, and after that the BTN controls ALL rights to EVERY game. If they choose not to broadcast the game, it is their choice if they want to sell the rights of the game to FSN, CSTV, or whoever, or just not allow the game to be broadcast at all. That could be pretty good bargining tool for them have, in terms of pushing for a BTHC. Plus it would give guaranteed revenue to some of the schools that currently don't have the resources for a D1 hockey program.

I personally would hate to see it to see happen, because it could mean that we could end up playing the majority of games against completely non-conpetitive teams, instead of UND, UMD, CC, Denver. etc. (although this year, that may not have been a bad thing :D )

  20. THANK YOU - i was expecting sagard to be here first on this but at least you see whats happened so far.............like i said so far......doesnt mean things cant change but............

is kangas going vs scsu both games or is it still in the air? the frazee experiment may have run its course already

Kangas will get the start on Friday...........no word on what happens Saturday yet. I am assuming the coaching staff is going to wait and see how Kangas fares. I am sure they are well aware of the Frazee meltdown at the Concrete Center last year,
