  1. Cool.  I'd noticed a discussion in Hockey-L about the trifecta + Hobey, of which the only winner was Broten.

However, it seemed a little unfair to include the Hobey (an individual honor) and not any of the NHL individual honors a player can win.  Eddie has won a couple of Vezinas and a Calder in the NHL.

One could argue his merits, but I'm not sure Broten won any individual honors in the NHL.

  2. No, they're certainly not God, but to get more than 2 points off them would require UND's best play of the season and Denver's worst.

Denver's only conference losses have come against Minnesota, St. Cloud, and CC (though note that Denver doesn't have a losing record against any of those teams).

Against more UND-like teams (UW, AA, Mankato) they are not only 8-0, but outscored those opponents 37-12 in those games.

UND facing opponents of Denver's caliber (only SCSU is currently close in points, but I'll throw in Minnesota) is 1-6.

Having gotten only 2 points off Duluth last weekend, I'm not sure I see what A-game the Sioux are bringing to the Denver games that will overcome those trends and bring about 2 points, let alone more than 2.

One bright point -- the teams I listed as being "like UND" are very close in conference standings, but UND actually outscores them by about 20%.

    Here's hoping I'm wrong...

  3. I thought multi-year scheduling deals were pretty common.  However, if not, it's entirely likely that the Michigans of the world don't want to bring in UND because it's now a weak team.

Just as we don't want to play the creampuffs, the Sioux are now a creampuff  :)

  4. I may be best remembered as one of Andy's biggest critics.  After our first loss this year I was commenting how our biggest problem seems to be goaltending -- Andy often doesn't look comfortably positioned and sometimes seemed a little surprised to find himself in the way of the puck.

That said, I still think he's probably our best goaltender.  It's a tough adjustment coming off years of record-setting Goehring & Schweitzer.

  5. Playing the big boys doesn't even seem to lead to extra losses.  This year we swept Michigan and Mich State in the GLI, and swept St Lawrence.

Without those wins, or with wins against lower tier teams, there would truly be no bright spots to the season.

  6. The schedule is rather favorable.  We always step it up for Minnesota (including a split earlier in the season).

We play Tech 4 times -- hopefully we'll pick up SOME points there.

And 2 games against Duluth, the #10 team.  Of course, they might be viewing us as their opportunity for a win or two, also.

And, we end the season hosting Denver at REA.  We can dream, can't we?

  7. A sweep by Tech this weekend would give them a tie with UND for 8th.  Personally, I think this is the weekend that UND pulls out some points.  (Keep in mind that UND has played two more games than Tech).

I did notice in the full WCHA standings that despite having similar records, UND has a much higher scoring offense than Tech.

  8. One of the more succinct and sound arguments I've seen on the "don't change American Indian team names" side.

I'll include the portion that the NCAA has quoted in the below link:

    John J. Miller, columnist

    National Review

"It should come as no surprise that many people believe they honor Indians when they name teams after them. It makes sense that people would want to do this. Indians, after all, occupy a special niche in the American imagination, in which they are associated with martial courage and a spirituality grounded in the natural world. It is no accident that the environmental movement's most effective symbol was the Indian who shed tears in the 'Keep America Beautiful' anti-litter commercials of the 1970s.

"Because of these positive associations, tribal names find their way onto all kinds of consumer products, such as the Jeep Cherokee and the Dodge Dakota. For the same reason, Indian images appear on U.S. currency, such as the old Indian-head nickel and the new Sacajawea dollar. The Army even names its helicopters after tribes: the Apache Longbow, the Kiowa Warrior, the Comanche, and the Blackhawk. If we were to follow (the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights' claim that Indian team names perpetuate harmful stereotypes and foster a racially hostile environment) to its logical conclusion, a number of cities (for example, Chicago, Miami, and Milwaukee), plus about half the states, would have to be renamed. ...

"It's tempting to think that the same activists who now complain that the presence of Indian team names is an insult would then say that the absence of Indian team names is proof of racism. And in that latter claim, there would be substantially more justice."

  9. I tried out the AdSubtract SE product.  It seems to remove not only the lone ad, but also the title banner from the SiouxSports.com hockey home page.

Clearly I'm going to have to figure out how to defeat this insidious software :)

  10. Yeah, some of those dropped passes throughout the game scared me (not to mention the punts and field goal attempts).  I suppose the wet weather had something to do with it, but we came through in the end.

That 4th down play on the final TD drive was nerve-racking (not to mention the last 10 secs of defense).

  11. Oh, I'm all for giving the kid a chance.  He could easily be better than any of UND's goaltenders (I'm sure many of you remember how bad I thought UND's goalies looked at the very beginning of the season).

I'm just saying that I think UND's problems go well beyond goaltending.  Bad goaltending doesn't lead to a shutout.  Bad goaltending can lead to you losing 4-6, not 0-6.

Of course, a change between the pipes can have a very inspirational effect on the rest of the time (like changing QBs).  It could be a catalyst to get other players to play up to their potentials, as many here have speculated.
