  1. Did you write directly to the Reader's Rep, or to Coleman? Coleman didn't respond to me either.

I will only say one thing. Coleman is a columnist, not a reporter. PCM is better able verify if this is write, but columnists comment on situations and that's going to include their opinions, rather than just report the truth like reporters/journalists. I'll give Coleman that much latitude. But it doesn't give him an excuse for falsely trying to defame supporters of UND.

IMO Coleman walked a fine line, a fine line that IMO the Reader's Rep was fooled by. Either she was fooled or I'm overly sensitive, something few people would accuse me of (though I'm guilty of emotionally reacting to some things before thinking them through too). Coleman, like some others that post on these boards very cleverly write small "outs" into statements that make that try to falsely color a situation. When called on it they can claim "I only said it was my opinion" when in context it's very clear what impression they are intending to leave with the reader. The whole idea is that unless the reader is paying very close attention and parsing the words used by the writer very closely, they often won't catch the "out" and end up believing what they read was fact.

IMO it's clear Coleman was doing this and the Reader's Rep, Kate Parry, let him get away with it. Heck, I give money to UND and compared to a segment of society I could be considered "wealthy". Therefore, when I read what Coleman says I would do at a cocktail party "if I still could" I get offended. I don't get offended very easily, but it's clear his intent was to stereotype anyone who supports the UND Fighting Sioux nickname as racist, vulgar, fascist, etc etc etc. I think that is at the least an irresponsible thing to do, and possibly much worse that that. That's why I asked for an apology.

I'd kind of let this go but now this morning I'm kind of ticked off again, and feel like complaining to someone else at the Star Trib.

I'd be more than happy to have someone offer a perspective correcting mine. I'm not above being wrong.

I did write to the readers rep....No response. I also understand that Coleman is a columnist but he should still do the research and get his facts straight before writing a biased piece. I think it is just ehtical to do so. Just my opinion I could be wrong.....But I doubt it.

  2. I asked her 2 things, because I didn't believe her answer was any sort of explanation, but more a defense of Coleman being able to write whatever he wants because "it's his opinion".

My point to her was that Coleman was cleverly trying to leave a false impression with the reader about how UND benefactors act, what kind of person Ralph Engelstad was, etc. I felt that tactic by Coleman was unethical, even though it was his "opinion".

She had mentioned that the Hitler birthday parties were fact, and that Coleman had clearly indicated his other inferences were his "opinion".

So I asked her the following:

    1. What stops UND benefactors from behaving the way Coleman says they would? Have they ever acted that way? Is there a law or a policy that PREVENTS them from acting this way? The answer to the former is nobody knows, even Coleman. And the answer to the latter is no. Therefore, I believe Coleman's inference is irresponsible and even offensive.

    2. What did Ralph's collection of Nazi memorabelia have to do with this story? Nothing. In addition, he completely ignored Ralph's total collection of WWII memorabelia including stuff from Stalin and Patton's papers, etc. Yet he inferred Ralph was a Nazi with "tainted" money.

She no longer responded after my email responding to her answer. I thought as the "Reader's Representative" she would be interested in a discourse with an upset reader. IMO, and I realize this could be flawed because I'm a little ticked off about it, she acted only as a defender of Coleman. I don't expect she needed to agree with me. But I would have expected her to address my on-going questions. Instead, I felt that her first response was a dismissal. I never asked for a correction, I asked for an apology and she didn't seem to grasp this. She essentially scolded me by saying that I had admitted some of what Coleman wrote was fact, and therefore because of that, and the fact that he'd acknowledged the rest was his "opinion" she wouldn't recommend a correction. I asked for an apology because I felt he had been unfair and even offensive in his tactics. I didn't ask for him to correct anything.

Again, she doesn't have to agree with me for me to be satisfied. I don't believe she adequately addressed (understood?) my complaints, and she failed to respond to my follow-up questions. That doesn't fit my description for a "reader's representative". That's what is burning me as much as Coleman's hack job.

At least you got a response, I did not get a response at all. Coleman is a idiot and it just goes to show that he is more interested in his bashing and leaning journalism then anything that would represent the truth. He missed that day in journalism classes. I mistakenly thought that journalist were to report the truth, if not it should be in the editorial page and not in the sports section.

  3. My wife and I went to dinner at the Cheesecake Factory before going over to Joe Senser's to watch a game. There was an 1 1/2 hour wait to get a table. I went up to the counter to get a glass of water and a guy asked me about my jersey and what we were doing. Told him where we were going after eating and he said how long is the wait, told him. Then just about 5 minutes later he and the hostess walked up and sat us right away. Found out he was the manager and he later told me that he loved my jersey, and that he had one just like it at home. My wife was just blown away that we got a table because I was wearing my jersey. It was a really nice thing for him to do. But it just goes to show that it pays to wear your jersey everywear...

  4. I've always wanted a wife. The 1950's kind>>clean house, hot meals, laundry, ironing, total kid and pet care, grocery (and all) shopping, gardener, chauffeur, etc.

(No sex though, I don't swing that way. ;) )

No sex...What the hell I am married what is that.....

  5. There is a reference to a larger Native American Cultural Center/Museum in the UND Strategic Plan II, Building on Excellence (2005). Priority Action Area C: Complete the new American Indian Cultural

Center, and seek funding for an expanded center/museum.

When my wife and I took the tour of The Ralph we were told that there was going to be a Native American museum acroos the street. I checked with her before making this post, because if I was wrong she would be the first person to enjoy correcting me.

  6. Again, you're talking about an outright ban on the Minnesota Gopher hockey program for an entire post-season of play for these transgressions? At the same time, felons and felons-to-be take the football field every Saturday for storied schools like Virginia Tech, Marshall, Miami, and Florida State and the NCAA turns a blind eye. Should the Hokies be banned from post-season play because their QB was arrested for driving after suspension and for brandishing a weapon on someone? I know the NCAA does some obviously stupid things, but if this had happened in Grand Forks, you'd have sagard's opinion on the matter. Don't let your hatred of Minnesota cloud your mind. I'm no Gopher fan, but the penalty in this matter is likely to be greater for Blarneys' owner than it is for the players or the program.

Agreed, I see your point. The penalty should fit the crime.

  7. Hi, I'm earth...have we met? The Gophers don't 'host' the WCHA Final Five, the event is put out for bid every few years. The Xcel Energy Center, while being a somewhat unbiased host, isn't affiliated with the Gophers. Ditto for the Frozen Four.

You'd ban U of small m from hosting a regional because a couple of players got busted for underage drinking? Wow. What would you do to the Florida State Criminole football team or Cincinnati basketball?

Hello Earth I was just saying not being able to participate in those tournaments. That is what I was saying. But thanks for the insult I appreciate that. I thought I made my point clear. Sorry if I did not.

  8. Wouldn't the NC$$ have in interest in pursuing illegal recruiting practices here?

I hope they are sanctioned and can't play in any post season play. No WCHA Final Five no regionals and certainly no Frozen Four for at least one year. If they are so concearned with a nickname then the NCAA should ceratinly pull them from post season play for underage age drinking. Just my opinion I could be wrong!

  9. I think that the NC$$ is going to do something about this. If UMTC were smart, they would self report. I understand the NC$$ likes it when schools report their own violations.

Here's a lil' something for ya, MM. ???

    http://espn.go.com/ncaa/news/2001/0701/1220987.html

The best part of this story, was that she was senn stripping by members of the football team. They told everyone they saw her. So it is OK to go to a strip club but not work at one. I guess it is all in how much money the school makes from that team. This story was told on one of HBO's shows.

  10. I to just sent Mr. Idiot a email. I did pose one question to him. What happens when PETA digs into the NCAA and the Gophers have to change their name. Is he going to support that, since it is the right thing to do. This kind of babble just completely pisses me off.

That story have more holes then his head apparently.

I also told mr. coleman that he should visit The Ralph and see what a great facility it is before making a snap judgement.

  11. Bill Brudvik, candidate for State's Attorney, goes on record to say that the Attorney General's office should not be involved in the UND vs NCAA lawsuit. He says its a UND issue and that it will be too time consuming for the SA to take on. He doesn't think that Stenejhm has the time to take on the case. Stenejhm says the States Attorney's office is the only one that can represent the state in lawsuits.

Brudvik does support the name and logo.

Good information. I do not live in North Dakota anymore but I do know who i would be voting for come November. I do not want to drop names but my mom is friends with Stenejhm and told her that he thought this would come down to a lawsuit. He sounded confident when he told her.

  12. I do not want to be rude but are they kidding. She not only gets a great education, but returned their to further her education. If she really looks at that statue in front of the arena and is so distraught then she is definitly missing the point. WOW I am amazed she passed her studies. My 63 year old mother was almost moved to tears when she say the arena for the first time. She was amazed and felt that it was so honoralbe and what a great way to honor Native Americans in ND. Yes I understand we are white and maybe do not get it. But that story makes me think. Do you think black Americans go to the Lincoln Memorial and think, Wow that guy freed us. I am appalled or are they greatful that he is so honored for doing so. Maybe I am in the wrong, but I just do not get that mentality. Sorry for the long rant. But I have said it before and I will say it one more time. IT IS TO HONOR NATIVE AMERICANS NOT TO DEMEAN THEM. In the words of my friend that is Sioux indian and lives in Bismarck. He told me just three weeks ago. Indians need to Get over it....

  13. I was just on www.uscho.com and the have a poll going to ask the people that go to the website about the lawsuit. I think everyone needs to get on there and vote to show support.

It is on the home page.

    USCHO

Not sure if I did that right. Sorryif I did not..

  14. by his teammates? hmmm...... :D thats got to mean something..... :silly:

I have a question and I know I will get ripped for asking but the new recruits with the last name Chenoway, Zajac are the related to the previous players? If this has already been covered I am sorry. Just curious. Thanks. IF they are that says a lot for what the family thought of the program.

  15. I really am having a hard time trying to understand why the NCAA and opponents of the Fighting Sioux nickname keep insisting that it is proper to ONLY be proud of White guys. Oklahoma is proud of the Sooners, Nebraska is proud of its farmers (Cornhuskers), Notre Dame is proud of the Irish, Monmoth is proud of the Scots, Grand Valley is proud of the Great Lakes sailors, Mississippi is proud of the Rebels (as is Las Vegas), Wyoming is proud of its Cowboys (UCSB calls its cowboys Gauchos), Denver is proud of the Pioneers, and the list goes on. These are ALL white guys and the pc crowd and the NCAA says "fine". I would think that there would be an uproar over no schools being proud of Blacks, Latinos, Hispanics and other minority groups and an ourpouring of support for those schools that express pride in American Indians.

A hypothetical: Suppose a school wanted to rename and chose to be proud of the Patriots who fought for liberty in the Revolution, especially those who came in slavery and fought for their and our freedom. This school renames itself "The Patriots" and as a logo adopts a Black man in Revolutionary War uniform and installs as a mascot a replica of the logo to inspire fans and be visible at all contests. Would this imagery be deemed "hostile and abusive"? If so, would it still be "hostile and abusive" if the logo and mascot were changed to a white guy? This is why I believe that the only way to settle this issue is in court. Is it permissible to use human imagery to represent institutions? The answer has to be either yes in all cases or no in all cases.

I have said that UND if they do change their name, if should be changed the Calvary. Instead of showing a beautiful video of how UND honors the Sioux like they do at the beginning of every game. Maybe they could show a video of a Calvary soldier scalping a indian. I know this an extreme, but we would be within the guidlines of the NCAA. I just think this is a prime example of how screwed up this policy is...

  16. From a recent George Will column:

Great quote and Thanks for posting it....I think it is sad day when the PC world is considered right and anyone that disagrees with them is wrong. They are the closed minded ones. Who here does not honor the Sioux ever time we put on our jerseys and go to a game. I know I do. I am Proud to call my self a Sioux fan, and proud of what the Sioux Nation did for the Great State of North Dakota....

  17. You just can't get past that brick wall can you? As Flatland has stated, Dr. Kupchella is not the cause of this situation. He is protecting us from the opinions of Myles and like minded University Presidents. The NCAA has yet to present any facts/evidence that the use of the Sioux name and logo is hostile and abusive to Native Americans. No actions of hostility or abuse, some Native Americans just don't like it.

I don't like what your saying in this forum so you be banned from it, you should be banned from using any internet service, you should be banned from using any computer. That way I won't run across and be offended by what you think. You could still get your information from television, newspaper, and/or radio. You could write letters to the editor by hand or typewriter stating your opinion in that media form. I will be protected from your opinion. I'm only one person but I am one person who you are offending.

I completely agree with you Sioux-Cia. I make excellent points. I think that people do not think this all the way through and the jsut dig in their heels and never change their minds even when they have been proven wrong. Thanks for the excellent posts....Go Sioux!

  18. Excuse me, I have to go puke.....

I am one person and I am offended by the Minnesota Vikings should the NFL make them change their name? My wife is Irish, Notre Dame change your name. My son was bitten by a Gopher, Minnesota change your name. OrygunSue anyone can be offended by anything if the want to live their lives being offended by things. Maybe it is time for the PC crowd to grow the "F" up! It has gotten old.

  19. Darn it. Keep that up and I might start to cry.

I didn't mean to insult Dr. K. I just think he seems like a ranting buffoon (did I get it right that time?) that will alienate the University and that this stance that he has made will only harm our cause. The guy ought to be removed.

Other than that, I think he's been a great leader.

I agree with Dr. K but if we went around removing peopelthat we did not agree with all the time then there would be no politicians(not a bad idea)but it would not be good. I think it this point Kupchella had every right to finally take the gloves off. It was long over due. Orygunsue will disagree, but did you ever speak your mind after a boss, spouse or even a friend did not listen to reason. THen you know exactly why Kup said what needed to be said. The NCAA is acting like a bunch of idiots and saying we made a rule and tha tis that. But wait a minute this school in FLorida brings us a lot of money and this school in North Dakota not as much therefore we will just hang the school in North Dakota out to dry. No biggie what could they ever do to us. Well it is time the find out what UND could do.

Orygunsue you think that name is outdated. Do you know any Native Americans that are of Sioux decent that disagree with the nickname? I know several and they all think it is great and want UND to keep it. I just want you to answer this then, why is it OK for Notre Dame to be the Fighting Irish? is that not racial towards a group of people. Or any school with a Viking type name. I am Norweigian, should I demand that they be forced to change their name. Seriously I would like you to answer these questions.

Sorry all for the long rant. Once again...GO Sioux and Sioux forever!
