  1. Watch out!!! UNK beats Concordia St. Paul in OT. This a dangerous team right now. Saw both Kearney games. This team makes big shot after big shot. Despite being smaller than every team they play, they are especially proficient at scoring down low despite the size disadvantage. We (UND) didn't play great today, however I'm willing (its tough) to admit that Regis turned out to be a tough match up for us. They are part of the reason we struggled- their strength and quickness on the perimeter made a mess of getting into our sets for most of the game. I was rooting for Concordia I felt they were the better match up- our posts I feel would battled Behnke for Concordia and our guards would have had a tough match up for our perimeter. Now we we get a team that is very much like Regis, only much hotter shooting the bball, plus they've got the little extra motivator to get home for the Elite 8. Maybe I just worry to much.
  2. And in the end it really boils down to... who really cares. It appears undhockey22 that you are on a crusade to accompolish something. If it's to change the results of Mr. Hockey than by all means I encourage you to carry that banner. However, I don't know the success you'll have in doing that here. Be active, get out and about- facilitate change. In reality I honestly believe you don't believe that strongly in this issue, I think, what you really want is someone to just to listen to you. I'm inclined to agree with Redwing77's and Knownothings position on this one. The reality is I'm an east hockey guy, a gf hockey guy, and honestly do feel maybe a little smug when a GF team claims the title, honestly have never really cared about the Mr. Hockey award that much... it is who it is, always has been, in my belief. I saw Wurden plenty of times this year, he is very good defenseman, but wait, was he the best I saw this year, and I saw a fair amount of him, I would have to say no. He certainly didn't impress in the Red River regular season drubbing of South, and the other times I saw him I felt this guy's good, he may go on and do some things (and I hope he does) but he's not the best I saw. They may only be juniors this year and not elgible for the award but I will take the 2 RR dmen every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I may even place Swanson from WF ahead of him as well, and you know what that's my perspective. As far as, compared to other Seniors in the state... I'll take Everson from DL, that's who should have been Mr. Hockey. Again, my perspective and I watched a lot of hockey this year. This is the only thing that scares me in this whole situation undhockey22, if you're 15, I can see a young person getting pretty worked up about Mr. Hockey, I'll your give you your free pass... on how worked up you seem to be on this topic but if you're over the age of 20, clearly you may have some other issues to deal with Congrats, Mr. Herbel...I don't really care about this award, however your genuine surprise reaction when you were awarded it at the Ralph was worth it, and the fact that it apparently has dug itself into the skin and irratated undhockey22 is worth it as well.
  3. Omaha still hasn't made it to Vermillion- road is closed, I guess the roads and weather down there is way worse. What happens if they can't make to USD to play their game tomorrow? They would have to play it tomorrow in order for us to continue the tournament wouldn't they? Do we still play ours? Plus, isn't there a deadline that the conference tournament games have to be completed by 6p Sunday for seeding and regional selection?
  4. Also, just a couple of notes of non-conference teams that we've played this year. Lewis U whom the Sioux beat back in Nov. is #1 in the Great Lakes Region 24-3 on their season. Texas A&M Commerce whom the Sioux beat in Orlando in overtime is 5th 19-6 in the South Central Region, Seattle Pacific is at 4 in the West Region. The Sioux have played some good competition this year and hopefully that will be a benefit at this time of year.
  5. A couple of quick points... with St. Cloud St. getting drubbed at home- last wkend to USD and the loss tonight-- I don't see SCSU making the regional. (is that a good thing for the Sioux?... they have been a recent thorn in the side) Augie gets upset by UNO for the 2nd time this season- depending on how USD does in GF this weekend USD could move to 2, Regis to 3 and Augie to 4. (Kearney and Metro both won tonight...) Tonight in the Northern Sun-Northern St. MSU Moorehead & Concordia St. Paul all won with their tournament in St. Paul this weekend. Basicly what I'm trying to do is... pass along a couple of winners tonight, and start a little conversation about how the final seeding into the regional will play out.
  6. Absolutely hilarious, so misguided in our angst that the game isn't on tv. "Sweeny better do this..." "I wrote Degelder", does anyone realize who the real decision maker is over there? It's the person in charge of the purse strings, and also in charge of submitting the bids... the GM. My goodness has anyone even asked if Sweeny if he wanted to do the game, I for a fact know that he wanted to do it, and the reason he stated for not doing it was true, that answer came from the top I'm sure. In my humble opinion, for being in market #500 (not exact number) just an exageration of how freakin insignificant we really are, we have been incredibly fortunate to have the games over the years telecasted playoff or otherwise. It's not as if they charge $10,000 per 30 second spot and that a road broadcast will typically cost an estimated $7,000 to break even. Honestly, is it raining money in GF last time I checked my salary in GF- its not, and then again maybe you're all right-- their all greedy and DAZ makes too much money and they just decided not to spend it. By the way someone should do some research and see how often UNO gets any of their sports on TV and Omaha is a considerably bigger market than say the entire state of North Dakota. Fact is, this time the game is not being broadcast, oh well this is GF, I'm surprised that we've had as many games as we've had. I love the Sioux, I'm not going to whine, In fact when I see the radio guys or TV guys I'm going to shake their hand and say thank you for doing all the work you've done for all these years. Then I'm going to drink my glass of shut the hell up, because I really don't have a freaking clue, because I'm not in the media...so I'm going to cut them some slack- why because their probably Sioux fans too and I like to respect other Sioux fans and then I'm going to suck it up get in my car and go to the game. We will see some of you there. Go Sioux, beat the mavs, beat Pat Behrns and beat the NCAA while your at it. I wish I could serve the NCAA a glass of shut the hell up someday. I'm not compelled to write often. I'm not motivated enough to delegate my time to do so.
  7. I would agree Mike's Pizza is a great place. Sometime's I think it might come to top of mind but definately worth the trip across the river, also like Joe Dimaggio's downtown.
  8. Congrats to South on a great tournament, admittedly not my favorite school but you won it fair in square. Congrats again, what a tournament!!! couple of things on some of the conversations going on right now... 1st- Crease Gate- (GPR v. GFRR) let me preface this and say that usually GPR is one my favorite teams to watch and see do well, because of their style of play and their a smaller community, however I agree there was a man in the crease this is one question I have. How in the world does 14 GFRR get that opportunity to start that sequence in overtime? He was able to step right out of the corner and bring the puck to the net. Nobody, decided to play the body, ride him out of the play. Look at the state champions, did they allow RR to walk out from a corner and bring the puck to the net uncontested on championship night... I don't think so. Assume some responsibility here. I believe that 14 not only got one chance to put on the goaltender, but a second and thats when the puck slid to 18 and finished the play. Crease yes, but honestly if you don't tie up people take away the second chance at that point of the game you almost deserve your fate. GPR did not correct it either, look how many times during the 3rd place game someone was walking out of the corner for GFC with the puck. Heard one of the GFC forwards on the postgame say that their team realized that the wings for GPR in the game were hanging out way to high in the zone so there philosophy was to win it in the corner and bring it to the net. It worked as well. One other observation, why no GFC players on all-tournament team. At least one. They had a great tournament. The official scoring was terrible in the tournament 15 got a goal in the 3rd place game for GFC and it was credited to 7 who was no where near the play. Sorry 7 the secret is out. It happened on the previous night as well in other games. South- Congrats, Great Effort a little puck luck= champs- hey I thought it was in to tie the game at 2 but the replay showed otherwise and kudos to an official for a change, who was right there to make the call. GFRR and GFC well done, defended the tradition of GF state tournament hockey well. GFRR left it all out there. The world will go on without the state title for a year. As a fan I don't necessarily like it, but that is what next year is for. GPR- I honestly wish I could watch 17,18, and 19 play some more together. simply awesome they way they move the puck.
  9. It is not a given that G-P-R would have beaten GFC at Purper if they would have had to play in the qualifier. Central played that same Spoiler team a week earlier and handled G-P-R quite well. I was there and Central derserved to win that game. Had they played in East Region maybe G-P-R wins, or maybe not. So I don't think you can say that GFC does not derserve to be in the State tournament. You could also look at the fact, that if, GFC would have not had football legs in their first game of the year versus Shanley that they would have collected the 4 points and been the 4 seed headed into the East Region tournament. I'm not argueing I'm just trying to get a look at a different perspective. Minot today...tough one... however, how they could leave that many GFC players standing at the top of the crease throughout the game is beyond me.
  10. I don't believe they flip flop the bracket as they did for a while, so winners of the 12 and 230 games will meet in the 635 game where just a few years ago they used to flip it where those teams would get the late semifinal game. Am I correct? Now there is a couple of times to watch, live on KX 4 for eastern ND viewers and then a replay on KVLY after midnight. I'm not sure on how it will work out west but you can found out the info on the NDHSAA website. They have it posted on their front page. I'm going to the games and bringing a radio, I hope I can get a signal sometimes it's tough in these buildings. Good luck to all the teams. Whatever happens, happens, I'm just glad I can settle in for a weekend full of hockey.
  11. The first 2 east region tournament games are on KNOX 1310 AM. Grand Forks schools.
  12. You would be correct, my apologies. Crowley was, so was Ryan Kraft. my bad about Bonin and Trebil that was 96. Thanks
  13. I was at the GFC/GPR game and that is the best that GFC has looked to me- all year. Simple reason, they skated- they pressured and pestered. Perfect example Barclays gw goal was because he pressured the dman, caused a turnover and scored. Couple of things however, credit GPR who I thought didn't play particularly well through the first 2 periods trailing 2 nothing to regroup and bring the heat in the 3rd tying the game at 2. GPR's Zach Miller sometimes gets lost in the Campbell boy's shadow but he is a skilled player who will go to the net. I think its great that Central is starting to put it together, because whether they make state or not is not the issue to me, but my hope is that it will throw another team into the mix of possibilities at the Regional, which should be fun. See you all next Thursday.
  14. I know I've already posted to this thread but I got to thinking about the great games and moments, and besides the National Championships, I would have to say that the 97 meeting between the gophs and the Sioux. A couple of things on that series, I recall reading an article earlier in the week in USA Today about how the gophs were #1, they had Brian Bonin, Mike Crowley, Trebil etc... (oh, too bad that was suppose to be your year) and the Sioux to that point had not been extraodinary. They were great games, the Sioux swept. I don't know if I've seen any other team springboard off 2 games like the Sioux did that season as of course they went on to win the NC. I was a student at the time and we waited in line for 3 hours for the doors to open both nights, and you know what my friends and I would have waited a year in that line- it was awesome. People were getting pizza delivered in line. It was deafening in the old Ralph before each game and throughout. Cheers, Chants, Grandmas, Kids you name it. It was electric.
  15. So many choices....? Favorite team: 1980 National Champs... I think sometimes they get overlooked. I was only 3 at the time but, this is when I knew who I would cheer for the rest of my days. I also was pictured on the front page of the GF Herald receiving Mark Taylor's autograph that season. Best Duo: Mark Taylor and Doug Smail 1980 Where would Sioux Hockey Be without... Dixon Ward, Gary Valk, Chris Jensen... these are just a few. Thank God I didn't play against: Cary Eades (Intense) Player(s) on a mission on the PK: Scott Dub, Mike Prpich Felt sick when the injury happened because of what it meant: Neil Eisenhut Loved to say the name: Mickey Krampotich Best player: Zach Parise.. (ridiculously awesome) Mark Taylor honorable mention. I liked Sandy's defensive partner: Glenn Klotz Best D Man: James Patrick This is a great topic, it made me smile because of all the great memories this program has created.
