The 2011 U.S. National Junior Team:

  2. We have one, Frattin. deserves to be a canditate because of his one/off ice hockey performance this year and maybe if one feels what a player does with personal adversity should be counted toward Hobey consideration. Genoway's no, his on ice performance is not currently Hobey worthy and there plenty of other Sioux TEAMmates and WCHA players who have overcome more adversity than Genoway but under radar of the promotional wheel which in this case is trying to create a Hobey candidate. How about earning it. How many times do we have to see Genoway leave his teammates out to dry. Adversity is what Frattin is going through not Genoway. If Genoway is adversity, one should look under Lapoint first.

I would consider coming back from a season ending concussion is adversity - it appears you haven't recovered from yours.

  3. I agree about Kristo moving back up, but with Frattin, you don't fix what isn't broken.

I liken Frattin's wrister from the point to Duncan's wrister from his "spot". It's kind of the same thing going on where it seems like 80% of his goals come from the same spot. The defense knows it's coming and they still can't stop it.

It is broken - our PP numbers are terrible. Put the scorers up front and keep the playmakers on top.

  4. In WCHA games only, the Sioux powerplay is #8, while the PK is #1. Agree with the comments above about our PP needing to be better ....

Given our depth at D, ... I'd be inclined to use 2 D and 3 F rather than a 4-forward approach ... and getting some underclassmen (Forbort, Simpson) some time would help reload next year's team.

Agreed - with everyone healthy Forbort/Genoway Simpson/Marto combos would be effective. Forbort and Simpson are good "distributors" - they both move the puck quickly and can find the open man. While Frattin has a great shot from the point, he would be better up front on the half-wall, waiting for a cross-box pass and a one timer. Ditto for Kristo.

  5. Also, Mike Parks for next year at forward. I was thinking that O'Donnel was the most logical one to hold back but it sounds like he has been ripping it up as of late. I sure hope we get a d-man for next year shortly. I'm suprised we haven't heard of anybody on the D side as of yet. Only Mattson for next year so far.

I bet they will bring in an older D recruit with size that can play right away to compliment smaller puck-movers like Gleason/Simpson/Mattson.

    Blood (don't think he's a flight risk)

    McWilliam

    Gleason

    Forbort

    Simpson

    Mattson

    Recruit

    Hill

  6. I agree with that 100%, I just didn't know how to say it as smoothly as how you put it. I can't believe Gwoz had the audicity to spew the crap he did about the hit...especially after he got penalized (and possibly suspended) for it.

To be honest, I think the hit was a penalty. The rules are much stricter about the contact to the head, and no doubt Brad contacted him there. I do believe the penalty portion of the hit was unintentional. Brad probably came skated in on Jesse knowing the hit was easy pickins', but Jesse never ended up lifting his head and it was just the wrong place at the wrong time type of situation.

I hope Jesse pulls through and finishes his career without a hitch after successfully healing up.

I don't like Gwoz but I don't get the consternation over his comments re: Martin/Malone. He said that he thought the hit deserved a penalty - period. I didn't hear him rant about Malone/Sioux being dirty or anything like that.

  7. I agree that Blood got flat beat on the second goal. That first goal, however, the assignment was the center's to take that third DU player driving the net. Nelson was a step slow in his defensive assignment. The game is fluid and the center position is the hardest to play. These things happen, and it isn't a knock. I'm sure Hak will point it out in film, and I am sure that Nelson already knows it. You could see it on his face last night.

That doesn't mean that the dmen played perfectly...they have some work to do.

Watch an NHL game an see how rare it is that the D leave the front of the net open when the other team has the puck. They play the game from the middle out.

The center is supposed help down low but you can't hold him responsible when the D blows his assignment.

  8. I liked that the refs let the boys play. They started off only calling penalties if it prevented a legitimate scoring chance (I think Gregoire drew both). They then called a heavy, slightly high hit establishing the boundary that the boys can hit each other, just keep the elbows down and watch the head. The hook called against the Sioux was too obvious not to call, and considering Gwoz, I am sure the officials were hearing it. All in all good officiating. The blown call on offsides is tough...it is hard to tell when a player carries the puck in and makes himself offsides in the process. It is really hard when that player is turning and you can't tell where the puck is in relation to the blue line.

    My takeaways:

Gregoire was a force. His balance and strength on his skates is remarkable. He generated a ton of opportunities for himself and his teammates.

Knight also played a great game. He is becoming one of those guys who isn't flashy, but he ends up on the score sheet a couple times each night...not saying he's Toewser, but that was how I used think about him...you'd barely notice him out there half the time, but when you'd read the box he'd have 3 points, be a +4 and have gone 6 for 7 at the draw.

Hextall completes that line. It is a workman line with lots of talent. I like how they play. Good hard, fast, both ends of the ice, physical, and skilled. It is our most complete line.

Frattin needs to shoot. He tried being unselfish and playing good heads up hockey, but with his rocket, he just needs to fire away.

Kristo needs to get space before he shoots, he continues to get his shot blocked way too much. He did play hard and more physical than I have seen him play in a while. It is just a matter of time before he and Nelson take off. I see them really blossoming in the second half.

Defensively we have issues. It has been present for a while now (years) that we struggle transitioning the puck and breaking out. We also struggle once the opponent establishes the forecheck and sets up. There needs to be some work done.

Goaltending is a big question too. Dell let in two he'd probably like to have back. The first goal was a defensive breakdown by Brock Nelson. Not Dell's fault.

Our defenseman did not have to leave the front of the net wide open to chase a DU player behind the goalline, who was not an immediate threat. Nelson's the one who looks bad, this is what got us in trouble in Maine - D being out of control and leaving the middle of the rink wide open. Goal 3 was the same - both D ended up on their butt when all they had to do was stay calm, stay on their feet, and keep the play outside so the goalie has a poor angle stop to make.

Blood was a pylon on goal 2.

  9. I think Kristo and Hextall should be swapped. Both are great players, but I think Kristo's skill set better matches the top line with Gregoire and Knight. Hextall, conversely, matches up better with Brock Nelson and Mario Lamoureux on the third line. The third line is a bit grittier, but can still score. Hextall is exceptional at scoring in dirty places and in open spaces after receiving the puck with after a great pass. Nelson could set up a lot of goals for Hextall and Brett can also match Mario's defensive mentality on that same line.

I also wonder if part of Kristo's line placement is because of his off-season mishap...a minor punishment if you will. Not that the third line is bad, but Kristo is coming off an awesome rookie campaign with the accolades he raked in on his World Jr. run last year, so you'd think he'd be on a line with more playmakers like himself instead of one with a grinder (Mario Lamoureux) and a sniper (Brett Hextall).

I disagree on the "playmaker" label for Kristo - Kristo is a finisher and when he gets the puck below the blueline he is usually the one taking the shot - not looking for a pass/play to be made.

  10. Another great test for a well traveled hockey club. Maine will be the best skating team that the sioux will have played to this point of the season, and it will be an interesting matchup to see how the sioux can handle playing in a hostile atmosphere (can't call the weekend in Bemidji too hostile) against a top hockey east team.

    Eidsness Friday, Dell Saturday.

I'll predict a split for the sioux.

Another difference between UND and UMTC is that the Goph's rarely travel out of their comfort zone - when's the last time they traveled to HE for a game? The Sioux do it regularly.

  11. Kristo played well all weekend long and had a lot of opportunities but he just didn't get the puck to go in for him.

I think they are on the right track by adding Lammy with Kristo and Nelson. Kristo/Cichy are similar kinds of players (Kristo better of course) and putting Lammy on W instead gives the line more grit/balance.

  12. Here's the top 20 scorers for the Upper Midwest Elite league......10th grader, Luke Johnson (Grand Forks Central), is 11th....

    http://minnesota-high-school-hockey.blogspot.com/2010/10/2010-top-20-scorers-upper-midwest-hs_11.html

A couple of questions......Are we after Johnson? Also, does anyone know if we are after Justin Kloos, Lakeville South? Thanks!

I would suspect SCSU has the inside track on Johnson - the asst. coach knows him very well :-)

  13. It would be interesting to see who his unnamed source is.

I would bet his sources have a connection to the UMTC program - which is why I suspect they might lose him since they have leaked via Hammy that they are "cooling" on AJ.

  14. Agreed, now tell me how he fits in? Who sits instead? Forbort? Some nights probably. Lapoint? Marto? Like as has been said, I'll eat my shoe if either of those guys sit.

I'm sure the staff brought him in, knowing his situation, expecting him to play - I don't think he was brought in as "insurance" if injuries occur.

As I said before, barring injuries, this could be our "regular" lineup by Christmas (mix size and speed in pairings)

    Genoway/Forbort

    Blood/Simpson

    Marto/Lapoint

  15. Great post, sums up the defense for us this year. You just can't sit Lapoint, Blood, or Marto for sure (Genoway doesn't even need to be mentioned). Unless injury happens and we're set on dressing only 6 defense, I think we'll see Simpson for 15-20 games tops. Which is fine considering he's only 17 and still (hopefully) has 2 yrs + with us here depending on development and draft position. He'll log plenty of time next year thats for sure. We also have Gleason as well, with plenty of experience.

    1. He will need to play to develop.

    2. It is his draft year - it would be good for him and the program if his draft stock went up and not down this year. The only way his stock goes up is if he plays.

I'm sure the coaching staff will do what's best for the team = what would be good is to have a talented/highly touted prospect get better under their watch.
