  1. So let me get this straight Shanley barely makes it past Whap, loses 16-0 to RR and then the coaching staff has the balls to say "that's exactly what we had planned since Jan." Wow! if you haven't read the article it's one of the worst I have ever seen in high school hocky!

    Fargo Shanley employs unusual strategy

I agree. You should never give up on your players, no matter how high the odds are stacked against you. That's exactly what Shanley did. When you start giving up on your players, they'll start giving up on you.

  2. COME on dude............Warroad is the number 1 seed out of section 8A and will prolly make a run for a state championship. EGF is the number 2 seed in 8A and is hardly a "bad" team. Grafton is a bad team? Since when....so what we have left is a 3-1 win over north which isnt really sqweaking by...so good job rr for sqweazing by West Fargo...again C'Mon

The word is squeaking. Not sqweaking.

  3. Yea, but they have about as good of a chance at making the all-state team as Conway from Whapeton does.

To be honest with you, when Fargo Norths line of Bombenger, Klein, and Bekkedahl were clicking (which was pretty often) they were hands down the best line in the state. There may have been times where it seemed as though they were playing selfish, but in my mind those times were overshadowed by smart passes and creativity. If you find yourself unable to agree with my analysis, I suggest you contact Coach Erickson, and ask him to borrow a game tape from this season.

  4. By "only win of the year" do you really mean "one of nine wins"?

    Haha.

Don't get me wrong, I agree with you when you say the conference is down this year. But you said West Fargo was worse than they have been, which may be true in some regards. On the other hand, they can't be much worse. I am not certain, but I believe West Fargo has only been to the state tournement once. The consistency of play by teams was terrible. The only teams that were consistant were Red River, Wahpeton, and Shanley. Red River was good, while you could always count on the other two to play poorly.

  5. OVERLOOKED?

Does anyone think that there were other East players got overlooked for All-Conference? I'm not saying these players should be on, but you could certainly make a case for them based on their stats.

    F - Ian Powers - Fargo South (17g, 22a, 39 pts.)

    F - Russell Crary - Grand Forks Red River (18g, 18a, 36 pts.)

    F - Chad Demers - Grafton-Park River (22g, 20a, 42 pts.)

    D - Grant Narveson - Fargo North (6g, 18a, 24 pts.)

    G - Mike Sand (2.45 G.A.A., 90.0 % save, (17-5))

Demers was shafted in my opinion. I have never been overly impressed by the play of Ian Powers. To me, he has below average footspeed and hands that are decent at best. Narveson was either very good for North, or not very good at all. I'm sure consistency was the main reason he was left off the all conference list. That and the other defenseman named are not exactly terrible.

  6. Yeah, it wasn't against Willert, it was against Lamoureux, I guess. I don't know much about it, but I guess he got a good shot in. It was Friday, January 26th I guess. Just thought it was interesting, especially since Jundt is definitely not a fighter. I don't know about Lamoureux.

Jundt is a big boy. I am not surprised to hear he fought.

  7. does anyone know the times the games are played today and when the all conference teams come out?

I believe the voting for the all conference teams occurs today. The players will know before their second game I believe, so by word of mouth some of us should know a few names. Otherwise we have to wait until the ceremony after the championship game.

  8. First, I need to apologize for the name this post was written under. I used someone else's computer and forgot to change the user name that it defaulted too. It was me who posted the response in question here.

Second, if you read closely, I said 32 hours by the same measurement. Meaning in undergrad a 3 credit course (nonlab) typically meets for three hours per week. In my dental curriculum we took about 20 hours, credit wise, each semester the first two years, but that 20 hours required me to be at the school either in class or lab from 8 to noon and then 1 to 5, Monday through Friday. That did not include study time. By typical undergrad measurement that might even exceed 32 credit hours. That was my point for the well rounded student who can do that and still get the studying done in the hours beyond that time in those types of programs.

You specifically stated in your post that, "A 4.0 student who studies all the time while taking 16-20 credits a semester may fare quite poorly in grad school where the average load is often 32 credits a semester, by the same measurement. If he/she already studies all the time for the 20 credits, where's the time for the other 12?". I never see the word hours anywhere in your previous post.

  9. Could you clarify something for me please? I have never heard of anyone ever taking 32 credits a semester in graduate school much less than that being an average load.

At most universities your can receive a master's degree for 30 to 40 credits (including thesis credits if a thesis is required). So if what you are saying were true then most students would finish the bulk of their credits for a masters in one semester which is clearly not the case in any graduate program that I have seen. In addition, a doctoral degree is typically around 96 credits post bachelor's so by your analysis you could have your doctorate in 3 to 4 semesters. Could you please clarify if you really inteneded to say that graduate students take 32 credits a semester because I have never heard of such a case. In fact, taking more than 12 credits a semester requires a waiver from the Graduate Dean at some schools.

Also, I agree with your general analysis and logic but have some qualifications on your generalizations. Your comments about a well rounded person are well taken and true. The better grad programs now often do not take students with GPA's of 3.0 but admissions is competitive and 3.4 and up is more the norm especially if you want a tuition waiver or assistantship. Some schools will let in anyone with a 3.0, that is true, but many require higher grades than that especially with some of the grade inflation that takes place. I don't want to negate what you said about being well rounded as I agree with it, but many graduate schools do not gather information on whether you played in a sport or not and most do not care - also, there is no place on the application to put it at some schools. The main concern for grad school admission is academic competence. I would put emotional maturity next but you can only get an indication of that from the letters provided by those who write references. Bottomline, be a well rounded person, diversity your activities (extra curricular activities of any type) but get the best grades that you can get as grad school is a competitive process.

The section in bold below is taken from the UND website for the grad school. An entire program can consist of a minimum of 30 credits so the idea that 32 a semester is possible is out of line. At 3 credits a course that would be over 10 courses a semester which would be clearly impossible. At 4 credits a course it would be eight courses per semester. No quality graduate program would endose such a load.

    Thesis Option

Course Requirements. A minimum of 30 semester credits is required in a program of study for the M.A. or M.S. degree in a major field.

Someone who forgot to research their posts before they type them was just taught how to. Very well stated, NDpride.

  10. If this wasn't high school athletics you might have a point. The premise for high school sports is not to become the best athlete, it's to be the best student athlete. As long as high school hockey is just that then other factors, such as the whole high school part, might have more pull than just pure athleticism and competition,

Good point, Cold. The argument was though, if the award of Mr. Hockey was given to the best hockey player, most other factors should be left out. Because, simply going by the name of the award, it should be given to the best hockey player. But if other factors are considered, some would argue a seperate award should be given to those who excel inside the classroom and are model citizens outside the rink. If the award is intended to be given to the best hockey player (which it is, and is not) then other factors would not be included (grades, criminal record).

  11. This is where you are wrong. The difference between the east and west this year is more dramatic than most years. I agree that Devils Lake is beatable, but frankly, RR, South and Grafton are worlds above any of the teams in the west. South is probably more talented than RR, but has some "chemistry" problems. They pounded Bismarck, and it was no fluke. RR pasted Minot, and Grafton beat by 3 goals. There is virtually no chance that the top 3 seeds from the east get beat by west teams, and frankly, I will be surprised if any of those games are closer than 4 goals. I expect that Devils Lake or possibly North will be the 4th team coming out of the east. They are both beatable, but if DL is playing its best, they won't lose to Minot, Bismarck or Jamestown. North is at least as good as them, as they beat Bismarck and tied Jamestown. North's top line is very good, they simply don't have the depth. The bottom line is that DL and North should also beat the top seed from the west, but it may be a very good game.

This is not intended to be "west bashing" as I realize that there are years when the west has very good teams, and I also realize that there are good players from the west. In fact, many of the top players in the west would be the top players in the east. However, the depth of the top teams is where they have the advantage. South and RR can roll 4 lines and their 3rd and 4th lines will be better than most 2nd lines in the west. That is reality.

Very good, and very true post. Some may think this statement is outlandish but I believe Fargo North has the top line in the state. They might not have the top 3 players in the state, but they move the puck very well (for the most part) and are always moving. If you would have seen the game against South I think it was fairly apparent to who had the best line in that game. And it was Fargo North.

I don't like the Wests odds if they are banking on Jamestown beating North or DL in the opening game of the state tournement. Jamestown has a history of taking dumb penalties and I would not be surprised to see that take the game out of their hands.

  12. I smell upset next week. Bottineau is for real and they are going to beat Bismarck. Bottineau just lost to Minot 3-2 and I watched them, they are a good team. Now with BHS losing their leading scorer, Bottineau is going to pull off the upset.

I think our definitions of "good team" might be a little bit different.

  13. Jamestown 2 Bismarck 1, there was a fight in the end which resulted in Seeberg and Peterson kicked out for BHS and Spenningsby and Lindberg plus 2 jv seniors that were dressing for senior night. Thats some bad news for both teams going into the WDA tournament missing 2 of the better players from each team for the first round.

Spenningsby? Kicked out of a game for fighting? I would have never guessed...

  14. I don't think so for the ndaha, but we'll see i guess. just last year there was a finalist with a minor on his record, and i know there have been winners that have been in a situation like that, but i guess it's not up to us.

What other Mr. Hockey winners have had minors on their record prior to being named Mr. Hockey? In any case, if he is eligible, that does not mean it will not affect whether or not he wins. Although I believe the award should be given to the best hockey player in the state, other factors are considered in the voting. These include prior legal issues, grades, and community service. Some people are naturally better students than others, just like some are naturally better athletes. While legal issues can give some insight to the character of a certain player, in some cases, grades cannot. Some people may have to put in more effort to get a B, than someone else does to get an A. Because of that, I don't think that should be highly considered in the voting process.

  15. So earlier in the season when Grafton beat Warroad 4-1 everyone was talking about how down Warroad is this year. Well now RR beat them only 2-1. Is Warroad still down this year? I think if GPR plays their game on Saturday night like they did against Warroad earlier this season GPR has a very good chance at winning that game. RR obviously has the edge in defense and in goaltending but I would have to say that GPR has more dynamic forwards, including this years headrunner for Mr.Hockey, Zach Miller. This is shaping up to be a great battle.

Let's use some logical thinking. Fargo South loses to Red River 8-0. Earlier in the season Grafton lost to Red River by a score of 3-2. By your reasoning, Grafton should have beat South by a score similar to that (7-0). But that is not what happend, on both meetings Grafton lost to Fargo South. Game scores as well as other statistics (PIMs, goals, assists, points, blocked shots, takeouts) are just that. Statistics. Statistics are merely a presentation of numbers of things that were done in the past. When success in the past gaurentees success in the future, I will use statistics as a measuring as to how future events will occur.

  16. By "almost all," do you really mean 3 out of 7?

No. I said I believe almost all of them were drafted into the NHL. But yes, just under half of the defensmen were drafted into the NHL. I was under the impression Chay Genoway was drafted but that is not the case.

Was there anything else you would like to add to the topic?

  17. First off, for being such a high school hockey guru you have forgot to mention a few things. Besides Irmen, Potulny and Ziegelmann playing D1hockey, Mike Eickman (Nebraska-Omaha) and Nick Kresbach (Wayne State) also went on to play at that level. Another former RR player from around the same time period, Scott Howe, played a couple years at the Air Force Academy, however im not sure on the years. Im not saying that we will undoubtably see Galbreath, Ladeuceur, Meland and Arnason in D1 hockey someday. I am simply stating that it is possible. Another thing to remember is that there are other less established D1 programs out there, maybe these guys will not be good enough to play for a top notch program like UND or Minnesota, but I believe there are programs out there where they could fit in.

The topic at hand was those players being recruited for UND. I responded as I saw fit. You forgot to mention that Nick Kresbach transferred from Wayne State to play club hockey at NDSU. I knew Eickman went on to play division one after playing for the Lincoln Stars, but I was unsure as to where.

There is a chance that one of those players will play on a division one squad. My bet would be on Galbreath. But if your basis for playing division one hockey after high school is based solely on their success in high school you're not looking at the bigger picture. Maybe you should take a closer look at what many great ND players are doing in the junior ranks. Look at the stats for Marc Mihulka, Paul Weisgarber, Tyler Jundt, Andy Dittus and compare that to their high school stats.

I would find your posts to much more credible and well thought out if you could provide me some information or statistics that show the odds of playing division one hockey are in their favor.

  18. I agree with your point to some extent. More coaches need to focus on some of the smaller details. Sometimes it is not possible for a coach to stop a practice and point out every little detail. But, from watching many practices at different age levels, the players now adays are becoming less coachable. Maybe it's because their parents are letting them come on the site and read the posts. Coaches don't paid enough to deal with spoiled kids and ignorant parents.
