  1. I'm not going to jump on the "His loss" bandwagon, but I do have this question:

I'm not good with numbers, but with Marto coming in next year, would there have been a slot for him even if Smaby left early?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Would there be a spot open for a mobile, hulking defenseman who is a potential first round NHL draft pick? Nope, no chance! ;):glare:

  2. I haven't heard anything about Ziggy's playing time but I wouldn't be saying things about Isaac Reichmuth without checking your facts. And why would anyone say anything about Isaac being a bad goalie because Denver beat them in the Frozen Four? ARE YOU SO STUPID YOU FORGET ABOUT WHO ELSE LOST TO DENVER?:glare:?;)?:p

Ahem. Sorry about that. I'm not trying to rub it in or anything, just trying to say that if Isaac is a bad goalie because the 'Dogs lost to Denver, I guess schmittdoggydogg thinks Jordy Parise sucks, too.

Last year Isaac struggled, but the defense was pretty bad. Losing an All-American at D leaves a pretty big hole. What is a goalie supposed to do when Steve Czech turns the puck over in the zone time after time? Sheesh! In '03-'04, when we went to the Frozen Four, Isaac put up some pretty good numbers, including a 17-3-2 conference record (23-9-4 overall) and a 2.49 GAA (2.64 overall). The Dogs scored about 4 GPG, opponents around 2 GPG, so it's not like the 'Dogs were blowing every team away. As a freshman, he was the starter. I've watched Isaac play when he's on his game and he's a sharp goaltender.

Last year's stats may also be somewhat unrepresentative of his normal playing ability because it became apparant about halfway through the season that a lot of the seniors JUST DIDN'T CARE anymore.

Thanks, Redwing, for knowing a thing or two about what makes a good goalie.

and those of you who decided to talk smack about Reichmuth, well, just be glad you weren't talking about Evan Schwabe. I'm a nice girl most of the time, but if you said something bad about Evan, I'd have to kill you. Slowly.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Reciting facts is not talking smack. IR's numbers last year weren't good - FACT! It doesn't matter that the Dogs seniors gave up, UMD still finished just a hair behind UND (3 points) in the league race - FACT and then got absolutely destroyed during the WCHA first round - FACT. IR was a sieve in that series - FACT. AND he got pulled in both games - FACT.

Hey, if you think a save percentage under .900 and a GAA over 3.00 is pretty darned good as RW77 said, then more power to you. IR can be a good goalie but he wasn't last year. As for the 2004 team, that was Junior's, not Isaac's!!!

Normally, I would be pissed when someone calls me stupid, but then I considered the source.

As for Parise, say what you want, but his 2.13 GAA and .917 save% last season are considerably better, numberswise, then IR's in 2004 (2.64 GAA and .909 save %) but hey, again, don't let facts get in your way.

If you want do any more name-calling, why don't you save the other members of this board the lesson in immaturity and drop me a PM - I will be waiting on pins and needles.

  3. IIRC, the past two years, the Sioux have played awfully well against the Bulldogs.

That being said, wasn't this terrible goaltender (Reichmuth) the one that helped get them to the Frozen Four? ;)

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Where he gave up four goals to a very low scoring DU squad (yes the Pios did go on to win the championship), with 3 goals on 12 shots being scored by DU in the third - yeah, I remember, great performance, eh? :glare:

btw, I didn't say he was terrible, I just provided some stats that show, with regard to last season anyway, he really hasn't been that good.

  4. Reichmuth looked pretty darned good to me in the past. Are you sure you aren't thinking SCSU goaltending?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Not the best numbers last year (courtesy USCHO):

    Isaac Reichmuth, Jr 27 9 12 4 74 1456 3.05GAA 0 637 .896%

Let's not forget 4 GA on 14 shots (before getting pulled) during this past WCHA first round Friday night 8-2 UND buttkicking and the 4 GA on 14 shots in the second period on Saturday night before again getting pulled in a 6-1 UMD loss.

I am assuming you are thinking of other games when he looked "pretty darned good?" :glare:

  5. OSU had a very nice arena.  Probably second in the nation to UND.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You are kidding, right? Second in the nation?? I am sure it is a great basketball arena, but when the scoreboard shows total fouls, not shots on goal, and you have to look at the light ring to find the penalties you know you aren't sitting in a hockey arena.

There are much better hockey arenas in the WCHA alone. . . . perhaps even in the CHA!

  6. Brian Lee to wear #22 for UND:

Quick Hits with Senators draft pick Brian Lee

Q.H.: People were surprised when the Senators selected you ninth overall in the NHL entry draft. If you would have been forced into a prediction, when would you have guessed you'd be picked?

B.L.: I was thinking probably more between 12 and 15, somewhere in there. I was hoping to be a Top 10 pick, but I wasn't sure if that was reasonable or not.

Q.H.: Has it all sunk in yet?

B.L.: Yeah, I think so. It was such a great weekend, but it's not like other sports where you go straight to the team after the draft, so I'll just go back to work this week and take it from there.

Q.H.: You were given a tour of the Corel Centre after you were drafted ... what impressed you most about that?

B.L.: It's obviously a great facility. The locker room is unreal, the rink is unreal. Even the weight room, the training room is really nice. But what impressed me the most was how nice the people were. Our limo driver was such a nice guy, and the guy at the rink, "Brooksie" ... they were such nice people.

Q.H.: How did you celebrate on Saturday night?

B.L.: I celebrated with my family, we went to a little Italian place down in the market area, then right back to the hotel because we had a flight the next morning and we had to be at the airport for 4:30 a.m.

Q.H.: What was the party like when you got back to Minnesota?

B.L.: There wasn't really a party. My girlfriend picked me up at the airport and we just went back to the lake. There was a couple of my buddies waiting for me there, and it was nice to see them. Then it was back to the usual on Monday.

Q.H.: Who's the one player you look forward to meeting most on the Senators?

B.L.: They have so many good players ... Daniel Alfredsson, Zdeno Chara ... it's tough to just pick one.

Q.H.: What jersey number do you wear, and why?

B.L.: 22. Brian Leetch wears No. 2, so I wear 22. I've worn it through high school, and I'm wearing it at the University of North Dakota.

Q.H.: You're listed at 6-foot-21/2, 200 lbs.? Are you trying to add weight, or are you good at that size?

B.L.: I'm trying to get bigger, obviously. I don't know if I could play at 240, but probably 215, 220 right in there.

Q.H.: What's your training regiment like in the summer?

B.L.: I train four days a week, lift pretty hard, run a lot, skate a lot too. It's pretty busy.

    Q.H.: Who's cracking the whip?

B.L.: Dominic Noonan from Moorhead. He trains our whole high school team. I've been training with him for the past five or six summers.

Q.H.: What's your favourite way to spend time that doesn't involve hockey?

B.L.: I love being at the lake. We have a cabin on Detroit Lake in Minnesota. It's really nice. I love to golf, too.

Q.H.: What kind of golfer are you?

    B.L.: Average, I'd say.

    Q.H.: Your handicap?

B.L.: Probably between seven and 10.

Q.H.: That's a lot better than average. What's the strongest part of your game?

    B.L.: I'm a pretty good iron guy.

    Q.H.: Your favourite TV show?

B.L.: I really like Boy Meets World, and Friends, too.

    Q.H.: Your favourite food?

    B.L.: Pizza.

Q.H.: Your specialty in the kitchen?

B.L.: I'm not much of a chef. I can hardly cook anything at all. I can make a pretty good omelette.

    Q.H.: Who's your best friend?

B.L.: Spencer Deutz. He was a goalie for our team last season.

Q.H.: Do you know where you fit into U.N.D.'s plans this season?

B.L.: They lost a lot of D-men, so hopefully I'll be able to step in and play right away.

Q.H.: If you had no hope of a career in sports, what would you do?

B.L.: I'd probably be an anesthetist. That's what my mom is.

Q.H.: What does your dad do?

B.L.: He's in the process of selling his grain elevator company. So he just kind of bums around, doing odd jobs around the lake for now. He'll get a job in the fall, I'm sure.

Q.H.: Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

B.L.: Playing in the NHL. Hopefully, an all-star calibre player, and hopefully playing for the same team: Ottawa.

  7. I agree with the others above.  The pressure is on the freshmen D.

The one with the most pressure on the team might be Radke.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I agree that there will be huge pressure on the freshmen D, but I feel that the most pressure will likely be on Smaby as the defensive leader (assuming Greene leaves). He will have to carry a large burden and skate A LOT of minutes and he will need to be the go-to guy back there. That will be a lot of pressure for someone who, although he played well as the season progressed, was arguably the fifth d-man last year behind AS, NF, MJ and Greene.

  8. Is this going to be Commodore's lot in life?  Being traded from team to team to team? New Jersey, Anahiem, Calgary and now Carolina.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

As it relates to former Sioux players, this seems to be more of a rule than an exception. Of the 60 or so former players that have played at least one game in the NHL only 15 or so have played their entire career for only one team and in those situations it has usually been a very short NHL career.

For former Sioux making the big league, the average number of teams played for is around 2.8, but there are guys like Hrkac with NINE teams and Dennis Hextall and Dixon Ward with SIX teams and Troy Murray and Garry Valk with FIVE teams.

Considering Commodore never played an official game with Anaheim and has yet to lace them up with Carolina, he is under the average with only two teams played for.

  9. Carolina has a lot of local connections.  Matt Cullen, Ryan Bayda, now Commodore.  Is Brad Defauw still with their organization?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

BD was not resigned by Lowell prior to the '04-05 season and spent last year playing overseas!

  10. 2. You know the Commodore jersey is Game Issued, not Game Worn?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

That would make sense considering he never played a regular season game for the NHL Ducks. He did, however, dress for the Ducks during the '02-03 preseason, but I don't recall the number of games.

  11. In today's Sports Forum from the Fargo Forum, there is a short article about Tysen Dowzak (sorry I cannot find a link). Anyway, of relevance:

He has made an unofficial visit to UND and said he grew up wanting to play for the Sioux. . . . But Wisconsin - another school for which Dowzak has cheered - is also beginning to increase its push to secure his substantial services. 'It's still kind of early,' said Dowzak, who is spending the summer at home with his family in Fergus Falls. 'We're taking things slow with North Dakota right now.  I'm still looking at other schools, too.'
  12. Courtesy of Paul Shaheen at ROI:

    BUTCHER, Matt

    Current Team: Chilliwack Chiefs

    Jersey Number: 20

    Position: F

    Height: 6'3"

    Weight: 195

    Hometown: Langley, BC

    Shoots: Left

Date of Birth: January 1, 1987 (18 years)

    2003 - 2004 Season Chilliwack Chiefs 59 10 19 29 0.5 2 0 87

    2004 - 2005 Season Chilliwack Chiefs 71 28 34 62 0.9 8 3 106

Does the name and face look familiar? Certainly. Matt's the son of one-time NHL tough guy Garth Butcher, who played 15 NHL seasons with Vancouver, St. Louis, Quebec and Toronto.

Smyl (head coach): "He's thick and physical like his dad, but he's also very gifted. He's strong on face-offs, and wins his share of battles in the corners."

Butcher, according to Smyl, has Ivy League like marks, and is being pursued by many ECAC schools, along with others like Northern Michigan and North Dakota.

  13. My vote is Mike Prpich on that picture. It either looks like 19 (Prpich) or 13 (Marvin) but I definitely think this is Mike Prpich doing the hitting.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

    It is Travis Zajac, #15.

  14. It doesn't appear that Dahl will be the coach there much longer though, with Motzko moving in...maybe that played a part in his decision to commit to SCSU?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

It would seem that you are correct. Although I cannot find a link, there was an article in today's Forum regarding his signing.

    Of note:

But the Huskies showed virtually no interest until the middle of May when they hired Bob Motzko - who had been recruiting Ammerman for Minnesota - as an assistant coach.
They weren't ever really in the picture, Ammerman said.
