  1. Note to Jim: Need to update the time on your server.

I hesitantly agree with the comments about language by the students. I'm all for a good razzing of the opposing team. Many times I have stood and yelled at Mannino or specific referees regarding their own personal suck-hood. I also believe that you can be equally demeaning without vulgarity. "Clever" is always better than "vulgar" in my opinion, and I feel that it weakens your own stance when you have to resort to swearing. There are, after all, a lot of younger children at the games.

  2. Holy Cow! You guys get worked up around here! :silly: I promise I was only kidding. I do expect to see great things out of all these kids that have come in this year.

Honestly, I don't expect to see the Sioux have a Hobey winner until Jake Marto comes in next year.

Awwww, c'mon y'all, I'm only kidding. But I am awful excited to watch hockey for the next few years.

    :D;);)

  3. On a side note: Only people who don't live in Grand Forks called it "the forks."

    duh.

On a totally off topic side note, who left the toilet seat up? Now my arse is all wet.

  4. I love the fact that in 20 minutes or less, you can get away from everyone, even though the people here are generally honest, hard-working, good-hearted people. The air is fresh. We still have most of the modern conveniences that all those big city folk have :silly: even though we are considered "remote". The hunting and fishing are abundant.

Not to say that I don't like the action of larger cities, but I like the "slower" speed.

Just a lot of things that a person can't quantify because they've just been living that way all their life...

  5. It's nice to see that several of the incoming Sioux rookies are highly regarded prospects. We all know how young our d-corps will be and with the departure of Murray, I'd guess that 2 or 3 freshman forwards will need to be worked into the top 2 lines. I'm hoping that at least 2 of Toews, Kozek, and Oshie can pull it off.

    Forwards: (assuming no more departures)

Kozek--Zajac--Spirko.  Lots of skill. Big 2-way center with 2 smaller wings.

    Porter--Toews--Stafford.  17 year-old center with 2 big experienced wings.

Prpich--Watkins--Kaip.  A checking/grind line. Watkins bring some speed and skill.

Fabian--Oshie--Duncan.  Fabian does the dirty work for the talented rookies.

    Others: Martens--Miller--Foyt

Defense: (assuming Greene is gone--the inexperience here is a bit frightening)

Smaby--Lee.  Is Lee ready to play 25 minutes/game?

Chorney--Jones. Smaller pair, both have been very steady at earlier levels.

Finley--Radke. Plenty of talent here, but maybe more erratic.

    Alexander--Marvin.

Not sure about Kozek, but I wouldn't be surprised if Oshie was up in the first or second line. Then again, I don't know much about the strategy that goes into making up lines, but I think the kid's got talent and guts.

  6. I have been around Grand Forks all of my life. I have never thought of the use of the nickname as derogatory or disrespectful. In fact, as I grow older, I have never been more proud of the use of the nickname.

Compared to the almost comical use and implementation of the nickname "the Fighting Irish", I see the use of the Sioux name as a portrayal of courage, bravery, and endurance. I may be seeing the romantic view of Native Americans as no-nonsense people who did what they had to do to survive in a raw land and time. Compare that to the many luxuries available today, I still see the people of this region (regardless of ethnicity) as a no-nonsense people, going through life day by day, doing what it takes to survive or even thrive. It takes a certain character to live here, and I am proud of that. As proud as I am that UND uses the name of the Sioux, which I believe emodies that depiction. I believe it is done in honor and respect, not out of belittlement. It is done in the same way that a parent names his or her child after him or herself, or any relative for that matter. It is done to continue a legacy of pride, out of loyalty to a person's heritage.

No, this probably isn't a reason not to use the nickname, but it's my reason to use it.

  7. Could it be that Brad Miller will not be coming in for this year, it can't be Brady. Those are the only two "shoulders" I know of. If true, I find this to be an unexpected development, Oshie has great potential but I think he is being rushed a little bit much by making the jump right to the WCHA. Not a whole lot of players have great success with that jump, it is becoming more and more rare these days.

But did you see the beautiful assist he made on the winning goal in overtime for the state championship?:D Looked to me to the same kind of heart and soul that ZP played with here for two years.

  8. From what I know, Jake really wanted to play D1 baseball. Sounds like he is an outstanding pitcher. However, I think the best deal for him came from UND. Hats off to Mr. Hakstol for getting Jake over his want to be a goofer, and to Jake for making a decision that everyone hopes will be best for him and UND.

I personally like the strong defensive play that made up this season, and look forward to more of it in the future. It makes sense to me an offensive team can gel together toward the end of the year and do well. Run into a strong goalie, however, and you are done. Start gelling and playing strong defense toward the end of the year, and you are going to start winning games. Feels to me like the defense gelled at the end of the year, and the goals came as a bonus, but it was still built on a solid foundation of defense.

But hey, that's my own opinion, and what the heck do I know?:glare:?

  9. An all WCHA Frozen Four, WCHA player wins the Hobey, the WCHA has a 44% chance of winning the Spencer Penrose award... Is there anything left that the WCHA hasn't done this year?

Who says the West doesn't dominate college hockey right now???

As a side note: To anyone who was at Rumor's last night for the game, what a great crowd it was... The atmosphere was awesome considering it was Rumor's.

  10. All I can ask for is that the boys put everything they have into it. Which I know they will.

    God be with you Sioux!!!

(sorry, church and hockey should be separate, no?)
