  1. With as much as Wisconsin is struggling right now, they are a lock for the NCAA tournament which is over a month away. I believe that they can get things going in this time and if they do will be a deadly team to play in the tournament. Or they could keep imploding!!

I'm not debating that they won't make the tournament. It's probably mathematically impossible for them NOT to make the tournament. I think they could go one game and out if Elliott doesn't start saving their butts.

I watched the games against them here in the Forks, and it looked to me like their men against our boys. But maybe Elliott is the only player worth his salt on that team.

  2. I bought my tickets on the first sale day. I don't have season tickets. However, I could have sworn that I bought the three game package deal, but I only have tickets for Friday's 5:30 game and Saturday's 8:00 game. Is this correct? I'm assuming the second game on Friday follows immediately after the 5:30 game, and that will be my ticket??

  3. Wisconsin has great recruiters. Their 2007 class is looking like one of the best I have ever seen (similar to the Sioux 2005 freshman).

I'm talking about this season. If they don't turn it around, and fall off the face of the planet this year, they will have blown a really good start to 3/4 of the season. Would it be enough for Eaves to get the boot?

  4. Please don't boot my arse for talking about Wisconsin!! :silly:

I'm not trying to discredit Mankato, but things seem to be a little silly over at Bucky U. Doesn't it seem like a coaching problem when you lose a good goalie and the team starts to have issues? Granted, Connelly had big shoes to fill, and I'm sure Elliott has lost a little confidence being out for a while, but I almost feel sorry for those guys over there. It's never fun watching someone on a path of self-destruction. Do they have the skill, will, and coaching to turn things around before it's too late?

  5. That answers my question to an extent. However, regarding the (if we play) St. Cloud wins and losses and the following "rule" of RPI:

"If a team defeats a weak opponent, it is possible for its RPI to go down despite the win. Starting in 2003-04, if this happens in a team's conference tournament, that game can be thrown out of the RPI calculation for that team. Any team where this has occured has been noted with an asterisk beside their RPI."

One... the play-in should still count as the "Conference Tournament" under this rule and...

Two... if we beat St. Cloud and, again, under the "rule," we can't drop in RPI. However, can it drop if we lose 1 of 3 to St. Cloud under the "rule."

A strict reading would seem to point to yes, but a rationale reading of it would say no.

Is it too early to start drinking?

It's never too early to start drinking. The question is, "Is it too late to quit drinking?" :D

  6. It was '03, the Gophers had a home ice regional with no other decent teams placed there.

6 of one...etc. I was actually thinking of 2002 when they had the FF in St. Paul. Back then they still had the first round bye in the regionals, and MN had to play CC to get home to the FF. Granted, they did have a much better team and a much better record.

  7. If UND is going to make the tourney, I'd love for them to be a #4 seed. Honestly though I think they will move up to a #3 if they are going to make the tourney. Then we will have another collision between the Gophers and UND.

Three of the games between the Gophs and Sioux could have gone either way this year. I don't like those odds if they can be avoided. Playoff crowds are usually much different as well. At Mariucci a playoff crowd of 8500 Gophers fans is far more vocal and supportive than the 10,000 season ticket holders. I would guess you'd see the same at REA.

I give UND better odds against BU or Miami coming in as the No. 1. (Isn't that how Minny won her first champ in 2002 with a weak field at home for the regionals :-) )

I'd also like to see them kick some gopher butt for the chance to play in the FF this year too.

  8. There's always a chance, but it isn't likely.

Tampa Bay was trying to sign Smaby last off season. Many of the NHL teams were trying to sign their NCAA players. Potulny and Smaby were offerred contracts for sure. There were more than likely other offers to other NCAA players as well.

If Matt returns for his senior season, I'll be elated. if he does sign early, I won't be surprised though.

Marto isn't a Smaby type player, that much is true so I see your point. He's got good height, but his weight is freakishly low. I don't know what the deal is with his weight. Maybe he's like my brother and can't gain weight even though he may eat enough food and supplements? Speculation to say the least.

I think Finley will eventually play more of the body and become a force. Unfortunately, it's taking time for that to develop, whereas that wasn't the case for Matt and Zach Jones, Matt Smaby, Matt Greene, David Hale, or Mike Commodore. One other thing to consider, Brian Lee and Taylor Chorney can be very physical at times even though they are touted more for their positioning and offensive play.

Oh and one last thing: If we needed coaching that could teach a physical game, I don't think we could have a better trio of coaches, do you?

Part of Marto's tenure in the USHL is a weight training program. Don't know how he is doing, but he's made quite a commitment to UND in terms of bulking up. I look forward to seeing him play next year.

  9. I remember watching the super bowls growing up and how amazed I was that they let some stuff go in the past. This year, I think the officials clearly decided the game when they should have been a non-factor. The calls they made were very borderline. I don't care if they were technically correct or incorrect, they were so slight, that whatever influence the foul had on the play, the calls made a much bigger impact.

It's like winning the lottery, but being disqualified because you folded your winning ticket.

Honestly, I didn't have anything invested in the game either way, but I felt the officiating had a huge impact on the game. It shouldn't be that way.

  10. No, he wasn't right because a DQ wasn't overturned. It was shifted from one Sioux player to another. No penalties were reduced or rescinded.

There is something to what PCM is saying here. I did happen to watch the gopher game where Harrington got his DQ. Calling it "fighting" was a stretch, but there was no one else involved from the gophers. While they didn't review/rescind Harrington's penalty, I think in this case that they did right the situation where possible. To be honest, I don't think Harrington deserved the DQ either, but if Spirko had been DQ'ed, you just have to take your lumps and move on with it.

BTW, everyone fully knows going into a game, that if fighting or an activity close to it goes on, they are going to be sitting a game. A guy I knew used to call Gary Valk (I think) a pu$$y for not getting involved in any "extra-curricular" activities, but IMHO, even way back then, that was the smart move. Of course, that's easier for me to say than do. When a game is on the line, a lot of emotions are involved.

Either way, I always wish those boys the best, and hope that they can learn from their "mistakes."

  11. I have a lot of respect for Mankato. They seem like a dangerous team. Like the way the boys are playing this weekend. Seems like they are making some mistakes that a better team would make you pay for though.

That's the kind of mistake I was talking about...Watkin's clearing attempt, Mankato goal.

What the heck is up with Rankin? What an arse all night.
