  1. A 3rd discussed possible nickname is also included in the crest, not by name but by image.

  3. The NCAA Executive Committee can adopt a new, expanded policy right now. The full membership voted them the power. They have the power. They have used it. They will use it again at some point.

The NCAA Executive Committee could create an expanded policy like --> "If it's state law, we don't play NCAA tournament games in that state."

Would they do it? Who knows. Maybe start asking in MS and SC.

Maybe a little birdie should encourage the NCAA Executive Committe to announce statewide sanctions well before the June vote. They could rationalize this due to UND's attempts to comply with the settlement and the state legislature and initiative/referrendum process elevating it to a state issue. This would almost guarantee a no vote in June, thus bringing closure to the whole drama. A November constitutional ammendment vote won't gain support either if all ND schools are under sanction.

  4. This is what scares me. You have it worded backwards. If the June measure fails (more NO votes), the repeal fails, and the original April bill mandating the name stays. It takes a YES vote to get rid of the nickname. If it passes, then presumably the nickname at all cost crowd will come with a constitutional amendment.

Guys, we have to get this right or our own supporters are going to be confused on which way to vote.

I believe you have this backwards. In this case no means no. (nickname)

  5. At risk of repeating iramurphy and ScottM, all that matters is the signed settlement agreement between the State of ND (by and through the SBHE and UND) and the NCAA.

In that it says get approval from the TRIBAL COUNCILS (not a vote, Council approval) at SL and SR or face sanctions ... and also be subject to the "best practices" portion of the agreement.

Best practices? What's that? That's where in addition to sanctions (no hosting post-season, no name, no logo at NCAA events) the NCAA can sabotage and subvert you with the membership by reminding the members (continually) that you're under sanction and not in the favor or good graces of the NCAA home office and that schools following "best practices" have "we don't schedule teams under sanction" policies ... like Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa. It's clear that message has been delivered to the Big Sky by the NCAA. (And the Big Sky gets a big check from the NCAA MBB tournament annually, bigger than anything UND can deliver to them.)

It's insideous. It's the NCAA. And it's the way it is. And it can't be changed unless you take over control of the NCAA.

The "best practices" provision is the death knell of UND athletics as we know them. Being blackballed by the NCAA might not be an immediate death, but certainly a slow fatal bleed.

  6. I caught the last part of an interview with Tim O'Keefe on the radio today. (paraphrasing) He said that the Hak e-mail is not the reason we are in the position we are today. That e-mail was directed to Hockey Letterwinners to keep them informed on the issue and then was forwarded and became public. At that point in time there was still a belief that some action by the Legislature/Governor could sway the NCAA. He basically said what Faison has been saying "it is what it is" and the NCAA is not budging. He refrained from saying what he really thought of the NCAA, but said it has been handled poorly by them and there have been many missed opportunities to resolve this differently. Now it has become a game of who loves the nickname more and UND loses.
