  1. I was driving down 42nd st this morning and as I was driving by the new "Strip mall" next to the AE2s building, I saw they were advertising that a Tim Horton's will be opening soon. I know it's been mentioned that GF would be a good location due to our proximity to Canada and the hordes of Canadians that visit every weekend. Anyone ever been to a Horton's before?

EDIT: Also, it appears as though another building is going up directly south of AE2s, between the new strip mall and the apartments to the east. Does anyone know what that's going to be? I know the structure has steel in it so is it another strip mall or a restaurant maybe?

I believe that the ground floor will be commercial (ICON Architects) and 2-3 floors of apartments above.

  2. I believe that the COBPA facility is part of an ongoing capital campaign. This from the COBPA web site indicates that 2015 is the target for the end of this fund raising.

    Challenge Grant

One donor has stepped forward with a historic $10 million commitment to match gifts made through June 2015 to support the UND College of Business & Public Administration as it moves from great to exceptional. Endowments established to support new programs, scholarships, and faculty within the College of Business & Public Administration may be matched 3:1.

The gift established by the B. John Barry Family as a Challenge Grant, and is among the largest gift ever given to UND through the UND Foundation. In total, it will have a $40 million impact on the College of Business & Public Administration.

  3. One of GF architects once had renderings on their site for the addition/renovation to the School of Business. Haven't seen it in a couple of years, though.

More like 6 + years ago (Mar 2007).... In a Community thread here titled Building and Building, post #15 from Star2City and a link to GF Guy blog that is no longer in existence. JLG Architects no longer has the Facility plan on their web site, but this is the link to the old blog http://grandforkslife.blogspot.com/search/label/UND?updated-max=2007-10-18T22:55:00-05:00&max-results=20&start=20&by-date=false. About half way down the page.

  4. Agree. They really need to put this well away - at least 5-10 miles - from Grand Forks, not in north Grand Forks. The one to be built at Spiritwood is like 10 miles from Jamestown. It would actually be better to put is NE of Grand Forks, so any ammonia plume isn't likely to harm many people as that's not a normal wind direction, but sure that won't happen.

Will be located by the GF Sewage Lagoon & Just south of the Solid Waste Landfill. They consider this an ideal spot; level land, ready access to water (will use grey water from the lagoon), rail access, highway access, natural gas pipeline, electrical transmission line nearby. This spot has it all. It is probaby 4-5 miles from GF as the crow flies. First shovels in the ground - spring of 2015 and approx 2 yrs construction and in production 2017. Similar needs for construction @2000 trades workers for 2 years and 135 employees when up and running.
  5. It doesn't take long for some of those projects to be approved and for work to start. Maybe not be the case with this one though since I assume it will be considered a "state" project and the bidding will have to be done in a certain way. I don't know the specifics on that, someone else can probably fill in the blanks.

I saw the legal announcement a month or more ago for a RFP for engineering services. I don't remember when the work (demolition) was to begin, but was to be completed by September 2013
  6. Blow it up. I like the first round being best of three, then even a championship weekend where it's single elimination at one site for the remaining eight. Make it Wed, Friday, Saturday for the championship. Or something like that.

Bring the first round back on campus with best of 3 series using rankings #1 hosting #16, etc. No manipulations for "attendance" reasons. Even if you end up with 1500 in a 2000 seat barn, you will have a better atmosphere than the current regionals. The second round could also be on campuses if you want to keep a "Frozen Four" tournament, or go to an eight team tournament over a weekend, like Thurs, Sat, Championship Monday. Doesn't BB have their championship on Monday night? Coaches (some of them anyway) are calling for a change. http://www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/260568/
  7. Yes, Memorial has sprinturf that was installed 3 or 4 years back I believe.

A new artificial turf was installed prior to the 1998 season, and the current turf was installed in 2007.
  8. Can I assume that you also:

    1) Never went to class or did any homework. You just showed up for the final test and accomplished exactly what you invested.

    2) You never read a book. You only turn to the last two pages just in time to read the ending.

    3) if ever invited on a Canada fishing trip you would show up at the border as the group was coming home, just to claim your share of the catch.

    4) You don't date, but plan to show up for your wedding and get introduced to your bride.

    5) When it comes to having kids, you won't participate in the conception, but show up at the hospital just in time for labor.

Please take the above as tongue-in-cheek.

I have season hockey tickets and drive two hours each way for every home game. I traveled to St. Cloud, Omaha, Mankato, St. Paul for the entire Final Five, and to Grand Rapids for the regional. Along the way I witnessed a group of young men gaining experience and sharing a dream. I met many new people and gained some friends. I witnessed hundreds of Sioux fans surround the team and cheer them on as the team left the field at TD Ameritrade Park (and had a three day trip turn into five days). I saw beaming little kids walking out of Van Andel arena in Grand Rapids carrying a Fighting Sioux hockey stick handed to them by a player after the loss to Yale. I saw the end of the WCHA Final Five tournament as we know it. I participated in the Hoggsbreath Siouxsports.com brunch as I have every year. I saw Tate Maris get playing time in a non-exhibition game. I got to hear the team introduced as the North Dakota University Fighting Sioux in Grand Rapids over the weekend. And along the way I got to watch my favorite sport, college hockey. And I can hardly wait for next season to start.

I cannot even imagine having gone through the past decade without experiencing the DOT line, Mike Prpich, Ratislav Spirko, Evan Trupp, the 6-3 victory over the Gophers in last year's Final Five, and many other players and events associated with Fighting Sioux hockey.

We all have different expectations on how we do the journey. I like my method as much as you like yours.

  9. I think the WR from Alaska should switch to DB so we could have all four guys with that last name in the secondary.

    It'd be a Brown-out. :D

How easy would Hammer have the call... Brown is back in coverage.... and Brown with the tackle. :)
  10. Do we have any recruits coming in this weekend?

    From SFI.

    • We have not heard any names of potential recruits visiting UND this weekend. That tells us they must be close to being done. If they have any, it will be a very small group – maybe 2 or 3 to fill the remaining holes in the class.

  11. IPF info posted on SFI.

    • There are rumblings recently about the IPF fundraising progress being imminently close to putting a shovel in the ground. We have heard that approximately “only” 1 million more is needed to begin the project (after demolition) sometime this spring. Very promising, if true.

  12. Haha....you're right. Playing the rest of us in-state schools that MN has a much bigger relationship with than UND, is just an elaborate story so that MN can dodge UND. Just read that a few times and tell me that doesn't sound delusional.

EDIT: I'm not disputing that the rest of the schools have been ignored. They have, but this is taking it about 20 steps further.

Just what is that much bigger relationship? Other than having MN in your name?

  13. Truth? On this site? Good luck.

Here's a truth for you, In the 11 years ('99-'10) that Bemidji became a D-1 program and before they were in the WCHA, Minnesota played them a total of 7 times (6 in Mpls), while ND played them 15 times (10 in GF). Minnesota didn't care much to schedule this in-state school what amounts to a series every 3 years. ND and Bemidji played in 8 of the 11 years. Now it is supposedly important that Minnesota keeps the in-state schools on a yearly schedule and ND maybe every 3-4 years? They are clearly ducking ND.
