  1. That's good news, to allow for volunteers.

Question. Do they make these classes up later with additional days in the spring? Or are they just lost days.

If I'm not clear, I'm wondering if it's like the public schools. Take a storm day, make it up later.

I've been employed by UND since 1993, was a student prior to that. I don't remember ever being told that a lost day--for snow or flood--would have to be "made up." Some accrediting bodies, like the American Bar Association for the law school, may have "hours of instruction" minimums.

  2. Just back from a flood update assembly put on by UND administrators. The University will cancel classes starting at noon today and at least through Monday to allow students to engage in volunteer flood-fighting. The University will NOT close but will continue its other operations and will be a resource to those who are working against Mother Nature. Our students continue to volunteer in huge numbers, need our support and have earned our gratitude. By noon today, the University will have in place a Volunteer Coordination Center that will handle UND's response to calls for help. You will be able to find further information at flood.und.edu

  3. Here's the krach predictions.

By virtue of a much easier opening round game, Notre Dame comes out with a slightly higher chance of surviving it all and taking home the hardware. The other UND, less so

Well, thank goodness for everyone other than BU and Notre Dame, the games will be played on an ICESHEET, and not a SPREADSHEET.

  4. Isn't there a blizzard or something? I saw on the weather this morning the RR Valley was getting hit with some snow. Down here in MSP we are a bit, but not near as much as what you guys are.

There was "wintry mix" yesterday followed by some snow so it's slippery, probably. I noticed the wind picking up, too. But, as any veteran observer can tell you, UND has stayed open through much worse than this.

  5. Just got Notifind messages on every device I own and by every means that UND is closed today, all offices and no classes. Essential personnel only. The only explanation was "on account of weather."

  6. On behalf of my program and the great students who work for me, I just dropped a donation of work gloves and socks off at the Student Government Office in the Union. If you are like me (i.e. old and weak) and you can't actively help UND's students sandbag our neighbors down south, would you consider if there's some other way you can help? At the very least, let's let our kids know how proud we are of the way they have pitched in. Thank you, students!!

  7. Pretty sure all residential sump-pump discharge has to go to an outdoor city sewer drain. Running it on to your property because "most" of it will drain (eventually) to the street is a no-no. He needs a longer hose....talk to him or if you need someone to watch it while you're gone - pm me - I'd be happy to watch it since I'm stuck here anyway. I know we don't know each other but I'm happy to offer - up to you...)

I think all the crawls I've seen on TV in the last couple of days ask residents in cities fighting the good fight to send sump pump discharge into the STREET, and specifically NOT into the storm sewers.

  8. I am not ashamed of my homer tendencies.

I pick BU to beat OSU, and North Dakota to beat UNH in the NE regional. In the finale, I have the Sioux coming out on top and marching on Washington.

In the East, I choose Air Force (and Mars' brother, Jacques Lamoureux) to beat Michigan, Catamounts to beat Elis and Air Force to beat Vermont to advance to F4.

In the West, Denver beats Miami, Duluth beats Princeton. Duluth over Denver in the deja vu game, to continue the Dogs' fairy tale season with a trip to the Frozen 4.

In Midwest, Notre Dame to handle Bemidji. Northeastern to do the same to Cornell and Northeastern to go to DC after ending the luck of the Irish in the finale.

In the F4, the Sioux beat Air Force and Duluth beats Northeastern, putting Duluth and North Dakota in the title game where it's Midnight for Cinderella. In the championship, the Sioux find the key and open up Stalock like a canned ham. Sioux win title #8.

  9. Oh, yes, thank you, Mafia Man, for setting up the brunch. A good time was had by all and it was a great chance to meet like-minded Sioux fans to talk hockey and life. Those of you who missed it, well, you should know we talked about you behind your backs. Not really.

Thanks also for texting me the brackets for the Shiverin' 16 so the 42 of us riding west on Al's bus would have the selection show info. Now that we're in it, let's win it! Go, Sioux!!

I said it before, the Gophers' only chance to get to D.C. is beating Al Franken in a recount. Didn't realize how prophetic my little joke would be.

  10. My daughter is a huge Trupp fan and she was thinking about "Sioux-per Trupp-er". Doesn't roll off the tongue, but she is excited about it.

    How about, "Evan Almighty"?

line from the film: Evan:[reading Genesis 6:14] Make thee an ark of gopherwood. Gopherwood??
