I honestly don't see how a new coach immediately changes the transfer portal problem, which is literally the root of what is causing the issues right now.

I believe that Sather has the backing he needs from the AD to continue his process (and I fully agree with it). He is an excellent coach and can build a program. I really don't know how you prevent outside people getting in the ear's of the players you are using to build the program (looking specifically at Ihenacho and Bruns). I'm not sure anyone has the answer right now either. Similar things are happening at all the Dakota schools, the problem is UND is just at a bad spot in the cyclical nature of things right now and its becoming tougher to dig out of that hole.

One player felt he should have had bigger and better offers. UND invested a lot of time getting the person eligible at the D1 level. They were rewarded by him bolting to "something bigger and better" the first chance they had.
Another was completely ignored by their local schools. UND gave them the playing time immediately to show how they were mistaken. It was used against them and that player was talked into coming to play back home.

I don't necessarily think that changes with a new coach. What are they going to offer? It isn't more playing time or a bigger role. Those players already had all of that.

Like you said all the other schools are facing the same portal transfer issues.  Sather still needs to prove that he can recruit and play for championships in the Summit.  The other coaches are facing the same issues.    We cant keep using that as a excuse to stay at the bottom of the Summit.

I would give eaglestaff more credit than being here one year

a little early to be saying that, if that is the case why would he come in the first place

Maybe Archambeau will want to come here and play with him

I know Sather offered him.  I thought we had him until South Dakota jumped in.

Saw the signature collectors / flea market people were out at First Community Credit Union on 32nd. Is that banking business against having a big project come to town? Or did these people illegally set up shop?

Obviously the latter,  has nothing to do with the Credit Union

Seemed pretty pumped he got an offer.  Not sure what he brings to the table (haven't watched any of the highlights), it is always tough with these JUCOs on what you are going to get.  Stevens must know something about that program to keep making offers (Norman and Wagstaff were offered last year and both attended Snow College).

I watched the highlights looked like a alright player nothing that outstanding but the fact he has got this many offers makes me think there is more there .   How can you tell he seemed pumped? His Twitter response was the same as all his other offers

Do you know for sure we do not have interest?

No I dont and I am sure we have to have interest.  I am just saying I would love to see some more offers to North Dakota kids along with the Michigan kids.  Thats it.  We have several offers to young Michigan kids right now.

Recruiting 8th graders? Seems like a school would make a contact, take in touch occasionally and watch their growth, but what else would you expect UND to do with 13 year olds?

Did you watch any of the State A tournament?  Both 8th graders made the all tournament team and the one was the MVP.  I would say good chance they are going to be good players.  One of the players she beat out for the MVP just signed with Nebraska as junior.  If you wait until they are seniors you will be left way behind.  But I guess we can keep offering scholarships to Freshman in Michigan.   More butts in the seats with North Dakota kids is right.  A freshman from Mandan was just offered by NDSU this week.  We lost out on a recruit from Grafton that went to USD.  Right in our backyard.   I get there are alot of reasons why students choose where they go to school, just saying we need to have some interest in kids within our state too.

Grant will have a shot at p5 schools

not so much for the other 2

Agreed.  But those two would have been starters next year.   I dont think everything is great in Bisonville either.  I think some turmoil going on.

  8. I dont know if anyone is Watching the class A championship but UND needs to offer both those 8th grades from Minot a scholarship now !!  Not that I don't like all the Michigan girls but we need to keep the good talent here in the state too !  Those girls are going to be good!

-One departure was due to an academic/visa issue. UND didn't offer the in-person grad classes that the player needed to keep their visa. If that issue didn't exist, I doubt we're talking about this one
-Another was a kid that UND spent a fair amount of time being eligible for D1 athletics and didn't have other options at that level. First chance at somewhere else, they bolted. Not sure what you do about that, but it sucks.
-Another is likely leaving to play with his brother. Based on what the suspected team he might be heading to, he's going to see a drastic cut in playing time. Not winning much this year didn't help.
-A couple on that list were additions by subtraction.
-A few others weren't getting the playing time they felt they deserved or were told the playing time they were getting was going to go down.

I only see 3-4 transfers over the last couple years that should be considered a big deal and one of them was out of everyone's control. That being said, they were some pretty big hits.

Like I said I wish I could be that positive.  At the time I didnt have issues with all these players leaving either.  But what I am frustrated with is what we replaced those players with.  In my opinion we have steadily recruited worse players then we were losing and the players we lost were not that great.  But still better then what we have now.  If our current players played the players that left who would win?  Minus Rebraca.

  10. I just need to get a better attitude and be as positive as you guys are.  But this Bruns leaving really got me down.  Since Sather took over here are the kids that have left.  Moody, Eikens, Gertautus Urbanavicious  , Altebauers, Marko Coudreau,  Rebraca, Carlos Ramsey,  Seybian Sims , Ihenacho and now Bruns.   There was others that left that I feel were not D1 players so didnt include them.  The ones I listed all I think are as good or better then the team we had out there this year.   If players keep leaving are we just going to keep saying its just the way college basketball is?    When do we find those players that want to play for Sather and UND?   How long do we wait?   And Yes I know Rebraca wasnt his decision to leave.   I would take G & Marko over T any day as big guys.   Ok rant over.  I need to just get over it...

Sounds like UND has offered the guard that transferred out of U Mary.

Is this our best choice ? A senior from a bad division 2 school ?  I'm having serious doubts now that Sather knows how to recruit a division 1 player

I have something i think needs to be talked about that is Summit conference tournament and basically is it fair to other 8 schools that game is basically played on South Dakota home quart for both the South Dakota schools. Yes, the crowd draw is tremendous and i am sure it provides additional monies back to majority of conference members. The negative is this promotes the two South Dakota Schools basketball programs in that they have large advantage in recruiting talent. I am sure they show how they get to play in front of large crowds of their fans to prospective recruits. These advantages have help build these programs to where they are far way deeper in talent than most of the other schools in the conference.

The above advantages that come to South Dakota schools makes it very difficult for other schools in conference to build their programs and compete to get to NCAA tournament. This does not mean it can't be achieved but it makes it hard to build a program that has year in year out success with the advantage these schools have. I also got to believe it's why we hear how number of the schools in conference are looking to other conferences to compete in. Even our newest conference member there're rumors they are only going to use Summit as stepping stone to get to a desired conference for them. I just got done watching tournament on both sides of tournament for men and women the South Dakota schools were basically playing at home . This playing at home usually has always meant about 10 point advantage which may not be that big advantage but is definitely 5 points for sure. Then look at men's final where it was 2 point win for SDSU which factors in who wins the tournament.

Even College hockey have not let us have home court advantage in Regionals making it more difficult for us to have regional close to us instead they have moved regional around to different locations. This has been even at cost of reduced revenues to NCAA hockey tournament returns. This i think this has to be considered for Summit Conference too because their other venues around conference to show case and build region wide following of fans and schools in this conference. Look Denver has venues, so does the Twin Cities, Kansas City, and Tulsa to host a conference tournament. This does not mention even Fargo and Us have facilities that could host conference tournament.  I would appreciate other opinions on this but I watched the tournament when over 85% of seats were either dressed in Blue or Red for the games I find this not appealing format. Then you add in media color definitely shaded to these schools up until the championship game it makes me bristle. I got to believe new commissioner for the Summit has work cut out for him on conference tournament and getting schools on same media platform for the conference and then retaining member schools in the future and all this is tied together.

I agree 100% with this and was thinking the same thing.  I get they put on a good tournament and better revenue.  But at what cost ?  To give advantage to two schools that the rest of the league has to compete against ?  Having a home court advantage every year to get to the big dance is a huge advantage in recruiting.   I think all summit teams should have the same advantage even if it is to the detriment of more income .   NDSU usually has a big following and I seen very few NDSU colors watching the game last night.  This tells me that their fans were not able to get tickets .  SDSU fans swallow them up a year in advance . Yes anyone can but with the advantage in recruiting they have a good chance their team will be in the finals.  I'm tired of seeing it too

So thinking about next year... With Orth and Daninger likely back.   UND only loses Leet off the team next year.

Then add Beal, Hurst, Roach, and Aumer.  Also get back Gordon off of injury.

There is reason to be excited.

I hope this isnt a dumb question, but how do we lose one senior spot and add 4 freshman?   Who wont be on the team next year?   Some of the walk on's dont make the team?

why skirt around the question...i don't think they mention her being jesse's wife at all.

almost seems like she should have been the head coach hire btw? but either way greats hires both ways...

    still weird tho....

Who cares if its his wife.  Its his program and he can hire who he wants as an assistant.   With her qualifications we are lucky to have her as an assistant.  Great hire for both of them and cant wait to see what they can do for UND volleyball and making it relevant again!

Yeah I mean there hasn’t been a whole lot of D1 local talent as of late. Would have been nice to land Grant Nelson or Skunberg. Hurlburt twins are are going P5. Eaglestaff will be huge.

We did have Aanen Moody and Desean Eikens  :)  Looks like Aanen is having a decent year with Southern Utah this year.  I know he might have had his issues, but still would have been nice to have a local kid that can shoot on the roster.    I am looking forward to seeing Eaglestaff in a uniform next year!

  16. One thing to switch topic on how bad we blew a 20 point lead last night...  I seen A'Jahni Levias was dressed for the game for the first time last night.  I dont think it has been talked about?   I am sure he is still red shirting, but nice to see him on the court with the team.   Its hard to tell if he will help the team or not.  Anyone have any knowledge on his abilities ?

Bet if you asked her, she'd give you the reasoning. Haven't seen her avoid answering any questions in the past.

A team that won 2 games last year has now won 7 of their last 9, with the two losses against top 40ish teams in the nation. Quite the arm-chair coaching going on here. That's not saying it isn't fair to question, but claiming that the coach is being retributive, trying to play head games or doesn't have a clue is ridiculous. I feel pretty confident that it is being made a bigger deal than it really is.

Until she transfers.  Its just a observation and a big one at that.  There has to be a reason why you dont start your best player.   I think its perfectly reasonable to question this.  No one is saying Mal is a bad coach.  I just think fans just want our team to keep getting better and we have seen good players transfer from this program in the past and we dont want to see this again.

We don't know why she didn't start.  lf it's because she broke a training rule or whatever, I respect a coach that doesn't have a separate set of rules for her best player.  Two sets of rules destroys team morale.

This is like the third time she hasnt started her.  Might be more I am not going to go back and check.  When it happened the first few times I figured it must be some sort of punishment for not following rules etc.    Now again right after player of the month and the reason why we are winning games again we sit our best player on the bench to start.  Your theory would be KB is some sort of  destructive student athlete that continues to need punishment and breaks rules?   I dont see that from her and maybe its in the locker room.  But  I guarantee good players that should be starting dont think its a positive to be benched to start the game.    In my opinion you need to break some serious rules to take anyone out of a game.   And yes ALL players should be held to the same standard.  I just dont see KB as a player that is someone that is getting disciplined multiple times during the year.

The Summit player of the month starts. The dreadful start to the game was due to her being on the bench. This isn't complicated. Again Mal needs to be held accountable and give an explanation. Kacie almost single handedly brought UND back vs NDSU in the 2nd half then didn't start the next to road games?

Agreed.  This isnt the first time she has come off the bench.  There is no reason for your best player and player of the month to come off the bench.  The slow start most definitely was because of this.   Do we want our best player transferring?  She would start on any team in the summit.
