I don't think NIL is near as big of factor in college hockey recruiting as a lot of people think. The NIL focus is going to football and basketball primarily from boosters. At a place like Minnesota it finds it way to some hockey but I know Minnesota's NIL is still kind of getting its feet wet and not real solid yet. The top guys that are hyped coming in like a Cooley, Eichel, or thinking back to a guy like Toews or Kessel are probably getting NIL deals from hockey companies no matter where they go. If you think boosters at Michigan, Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan State, Arizona State, etc. are focused on getting their money to hockey recruits you'd be disappointed to find out where hockey is on their priority list.

The focus may be largely on football but I’m not sure people understand the type of money these schools bring in. The athletic program at Ohio State took in $48,000,000 in donations in 2020—a Covid year. That’s separate from nil

the point being, yes, nil is finding its way to hockey

BUT, because the bigs focus on football etc, a hockey centric NIL at UND would be a blockbuster in college hockey. When someone with proven business acumen puts one together with a solid Board, the fans will fund it better than any other in college. That’s not saying every sport has its own opportunity

this is an example: the Shottensteins own Value City Furniture. they’ve put this collective together for fans to fund

I think you'll soon see additional legislation putting limits on how much athlete-students earn, especially when the tax bills hit and you see a spate of bankruptcies.

The pendulum will swing back somehow.

Additional legislation? What legislation has put limits on NIL? It’s already been to the Supreme Court.

The US Supreme Court in a 9-0 decision declared the NCAA’s rules were a form of price fixing and a violation of labor laws and said the NCAAs attempts to limit compensation would be illegal in any other industry.

Judge Kavanaugh “Nowhere else in America can businesses get away with agreeing not to pay their workers a fair market rate on the theory that their product is defined by not paying their workers a fair market rate. … The NCAA is not above the law.”

People are always trying to change stuff just because. It’s a form of pointless progressivism. Just because something has been around awhile Doesn’t mean it needs to be changed just for the sake of changing something. Always looking to complain about something.

Agree, kill Chelsae Daggar, it was goodish for a month.

Revert to a band, consisting of real students, with actual instruments.

Fans will remember when to cheer, it would be fun.

Did you watch the games this weekend?  It was a split and congrats to ND for earning the split on the road but I am guessing recruiting has been going just fine for the Gophers as the discrepancy of talent was quite clear.    UND knew how they had to play and they executed it well but if it wasn't for the transfer goalie I am guessing you are looking at two losses where the Gophers score about 8 in each game.   I created the login because there appeared to be some knowledgeable and passionate hockey fans here.   This "tired argument" is just the point I decided to discuss today.   I did it without insults, rhetoric or childish retorts.     Why so defensive and sensitive?

AS stated a couple of times.    I don't have a issue with older Canadiens but if someone is going to go after the Gopher fans insinuating they are making something up that is actually pretty close to fact, why shouldn't I point out the inaccuracy of the original post.   Your first reply would seem to indicate that not only is it true, it is common across the more successful programs, which I also agreed, then the best you can do is to come at me with a criticism for creating a login to discuss it along with throwing out a lame attempt to take a shot at the recruiting success of the team that just dominated play against your team for the majority of the weekend.    I am not here to argue lame rhetoric and insults.    Got any points to actually discuss?

Goph fans are the only in sports who care about the age and geography of another team’s players. It’s childish and insecure at best that a metro area of 2.9 million care where a town of 60k’s players were born. You pretend an imaginary line 125 miles away is sacrosanct. You pretend so it fits your narrative that Minny is the Park Place royalty of hockey, and the blue collar team up the road crashing your party,  isn’t playing by the Marquees Of Queensbury Rules.

You get beat, regularly, therefore it must be unfair. The fact you are here with hours of wasted research is evidence of your obsession; you are the guy I feel embarrassed for who sings Oh Canada when we are introduced.

When college sports is no longer between programs, and becomes high school All Star games, then the trolling and rationalization will be less pathetic.

In the meantime count the starting players from Alabama on Saban’s team. The answer is 2, because Tuscaloosa isn't Atlanta. Makes it even more impressive in my book.

  5. Penn state collective buying disability insurance for football team. University has been helping facilitate.

“varying levels of remaining eligibility linked to a policy that ensures they can continue to receive partial income if they sustain injuries or are unable to play.” We Are NIL is also “receiving support from the university, despite not being directly affiliated.” Penn State coach James Franklin “has been particularly supportive”

yada yada yada taking a philosophical approach yada yada yada sit back and watch it evovle

Hopefully he’s not waiting for the NCAA “interim” policy to become something different.

After the the Supreme Court ruled, the NCAA paid 43 million in attorney fees and has sinse shown zero interest in anti-trust lawsuits. They punted to the schools, state AGs (for 501c3 rulings), donors, compliance departments and firms, and athletes.

Facilitating, helping the athletes, and compliance is where an AD can be invaluable. It’s a little complicated but so is everything when it’s new. 15 months supplies plenty of data points and precedence. As policy evolves so should the AD. Collectives and schools now have 3rd party firm resources available.

At this point saying “I’m watching” might be saying “I’m not up to the task”. But in his defense maybe nobody has shown interest in nil so neither has he.

sorry for the whole War And Peace thing

Give me a break.  Most schools are losing millions on athletics.

No offense but not sure how “most” is relevant in this case, but if so it makes nil even more important at UND. So at the risk of going off tangent I’ll bite.

When talking UND hockey these kids pack the house, sell beer and grinders, fill the bars and restaurants, and bring in the media contracts, licensing dollars, boosters and more. Not to mention they are entertaining as hell.

In 2016 the F Forum printed an article saying all sports at UND and NDSU lost money. It also went on say some sports, specifically women’s hockey, Und football, and NDSU women’s BB were bleeding money while others, Sioux hockey and ndsu football were losing relatively small amounts due to the required “specific” accounting format. Then it said counting “non-specific” revenue like media revenue, clothing etc licensing, boosters, advertising, and corp help, UND hockey and NDSU football were well into the black. None of that counts the afore mentioned community economic impact, and revenue carrying other sports.

Ignoring it is like ignoring cellphones or the internet.

Good or bad, NIL money is needed for all UND sports.

True, and I will say mostly, if not all, good.

It’s patently unfair for athletes to work and sacrifice to become the best, give all their time to an institution that might make millions from them, have no time for a job, and expect to get paid in just tuition. Even more so when we recruit them knowing full well they won’t or can’t stay for a degree.

Devil's advocate here, but I'd rather win without one.  NIL is destined to ruin college sports anyway.  Why not buck the trend and compete straight up?

Players who would come here only for the easy money are probably here for the wrong reason.

We might wait 200 yrs for former FB powerhouse Nebraska to beat Alabama, probably longer. Bama fans demand a winner so they get a winner, there is nothing wrong with that. As a rabid CF fan I haven’t met anyone who doesn’t respect that.

Thanks.  burd is old--nothing is perfectly clear anymore.

I found myself wondering whether some of the older coaches with great recruiting history (think York before retirement) shy away from social media communication and have their assistants handle that.

Your question is a good one, I’d like to know more about how our coaches go about it. I’d hope our HC and entire staff are aggressively involved with electronic media. Some programs hire staff in the order of “can he build relationships and recruit?”, followed by “can he coach?”

Some of the best recruiters are committed recruits of whom coaches ask for help. They have no rules.

  11. 4 hours ago, burd said:

What are the rules with respect to coaches communicating with recruits through social media?   Verboten?

Coaches can communicate with recruits privately through DMs on apps like Twitter and IG after the quiet period. Texting is fine too. Some of the top recruiting coaches text recruits even during college playoff and championship games.

The “click don’t type” rule allows coaches to “like” or “share” a recruit’s social media post but aren’t allowed to publicly comment on his sm profile until after he’s committed. But again, DMs are permitted.

    Perfectly clear?

Probably going to be an unpopular take here. At what point did hockey games need to have fan engagement to keep you entertained? Aren’t we all there for the game? Why rely so much on students for chants? You’re adults. If you want chants, start them yourself.

The commercial-less 3rd period is about the only thing stated that would be an improvement IMO. Beyond that, I go for the game. Don’t really care or let what music is playing or where the students are have an effect on my game experience. If they win, good. If they lose, not as good. Gimme a beer. A chair. And the game. Some of these gripes seem quite silly.

So for you the REA is a very wide screen TV?

Goofs hockey site, scrolling down to Mindset link takes you one of their collectives, then another link for contacting the athlete.

On June 29th the football players set up their own separate “player-led fan community that benefits members of the Minnesota football team.” Called the Twin Cities NIL Club. That’s the first I’ve seen the players set up their own.

If they do the NIL, that would eliminate the grindaz, in theory. Right?

Yep, and keep them from jumping after a year or two in many cases.

Some corp involvement is good, such as car dealership and restaurant endorsements but it’s the donor driven collectives that bring the serious money.
I’m a nobody and I’m in for 5k/yr so a couple well run UND collectives should clean up.

Here’s a recent A-Z list of better known collectives, there are many more. https://www.on3.com/nil/news/on3-guide-to-nil-collectives-around-the-nation/

  15. My recruiting info is limited largely to this board but I’ve followed nationwide FB recruiting in depth for 30 yrs. It’s clear NIL donor driven collectives are dominating recruiting. All P-5 schools will have a ddc by year’s end, and it’s not hyperbole to say any D1 without will be left in the proverbial dust.

Virtually all of our ooc competitors have strong collectives but most of their money goes to FB and BB. Which is where UND’s advantage lies.

Sioux/Hawks hockey being the jewel of UND sports identity, and as important as the program is to the fan base, UND is uniquely positioned  for a hockeycentric collective. With good leadership it’s unlikely anyone could compete.

Now for the hyperbole: we have a realistic and doable path to becoming the Bama of hockey.

Sounds over-the-top, but because it’s this particular program, build it and the money will come. We need some leaders to lead and I assume it will happen, but hopefully soon.

(UMD is the most similar program I can think of with a collective, I don’t know how well it does yet or how much goes to hockey, but they do have a yr head-start) https://umdbulldogs.com/news/2021/7/7/general-umd-announces-nil-program-the-bulldog-advantage.aspx

  16. Have any NIL donor-led collectives been formed thus far for UND athletics?  More specifically, hockey.

If we don’t have a collective yet then it will happen, but hopefully we are one of the first. We are a relatively small school but the hockey fan base is the best in the country. I would be happy to donate monthly but it would take leadership and passion to start one.

Yep, flew in after many years away so my wife could see a game and do some fishing. Nervous Hawks chant, followed immediately by a weak Sioux chant seemingly intended to drown out the hawks chant, followed quickly by dead silence. I had to explain the name change neurosis afflicting the arena.

Well, AIC's resume is less than impressive. That being said, they don't get to pick who they play, they just have to play the schedule. They did, and they did it well. Now this game should not even be close, but we saw what happened against Canisius the other year, and we have see what happened with AIC a few years ago against St Cloud and we all certainly remember Holy Cross.

Take the game serious, leave no doubt, and pound these guys! Score early and score often!

If hockey had a fourth period the better team would win almost every game. As it is, most teams have a chance with a hot goalie or a bad bounce.
