  1. Football or hockey?

Doubtful on football. They make too much money even when they suck to join the Big10.

I'm rather curious if Notre Dame will do what UAH is doing and just go independent? Harder to get to the NCAA but as an indie they control their destiny much better....

Your thinking of old information regarding the amount they pull in for football... the big 10 network has changed everything, and was impetus for expansion last summer. The figures before nebraska joined last year had Indiana and Purdue pulling in 5 million more than notre dames contract with NBC due to the equal revenue sharing of the Big 10 (which is also the reason that nobody cares how much Minnesota whines about moving their hockey program).

The conference is going to be moving to 16 teams, and one of them is going to be Notre Dame... there's too much money for everybody involved for it not to happen.

  2. 2 questions I have. #1 Minnesota sticks with the no Indian name policy and decides not to play UND? Would they reconsider this when Michigan Tech is on their home schedule as a non-conference game?

#2. Since everyone knows the BTHC is about $$$$$ Whats the chances they relax their policy and invite UND in since UND is one the top money makers in all of college hockey if not the leader.

I just think the BTHC could not hurt UND at all simply because we are at the top of the league. Ohio State and Penn State and now maybe Indiana...good luck with that trio.:lol:

UND will not be invited, under any circumstances, to the Big 10. And it couldn't afford to, even if it was. Playing in the BTHC would require UND to be broadcast on the Big 10 network. That would require UND to "buy in" to the network, as other schools (Nebraska) have been forced to do, and at this point, its not cheap. It would also mean that the Big 10 would have to negotiate to get the BTCH on in North Dakota regular television, which while possible, hardly seems worth the time with the population of the state. Add to that, how do you see something like this going down in Big 10 meetings? Do you really think that the most powerful athletic conference in the country is going to sit around debating the implications of adding a school like UND to the conference over what is basically filler for the network? No, they won't. UND isn't even close to having the academic profile to being associated with the conference. There was an uproar over Nebraska for petes sake. In addition, the Big10 is an "all in" association, they don't take affiliates.

I'l add to this, those of you that are looking to Notre Dame for help on this... they'll be in the conference in the next decade, its inevitable.

  3. Fayetteville (NW Arkansas) is much more culturally attune to Oklahoma, Kansas and Missouri than it is to any SEC school, and it has an old rivalry with Texas that beats anything they have in the SEC. Arkansas really doesn't have a rivalry game in the SEC (LSU, Ole Miss, and Miss St at least don't consider them as such.)

Texas already has attempted to get in the Pac-10 (and Big 10) and were declined, which what prompted the formation of the Big 12.

Things may be different now for Texas in the Big 10, since the addition of Penn State. Notre Dame isn't going to be joining, and the addition of Texas would give the Big 10 its football championship game, as well as another traditional power in football. Add that Texas would likely be in a division opposite OSU and Michigan, not to mention the academic reputation of the school, and it could be possible. Missouri is also a possibility due to its academics and location. I seriously doubt Nebraska would fit the academic mold that the Big 10 schools are looking for, so I see them as unlikely to gain admission.

I've always thought that the Big 10 addition order for a 12th spot would be: 1. Notre Dame 2. Texas 3. Missouri 4. Iowa State 5. Penn 6. Syracuse. I think the most likely scenario though, is nobody is added, and the conference will wait until hell freezes over to get Notre Dame in.

  4. I'm sure they mistook us for NDSU...or maybe they know something we don't

I'm sure thats what coaches at UND and USD are telling recruits right now. Nobody is going to go recruit telling kids "Theres a chance you may never compete for a championship of any kind for your entire career".

  5. Ya'know, aff is right.

I'd like the world's best hockey rink, a practice rink, and a 3500 seat basketball/volleyball training facility.

It means each person here has to give $35,456.

I guess it's not going to happen.

No, thats wrong. For those, it would be a donation of $1714 a piece.

Getting to the blunt point though, a single 100 million dollar donation from a dead man doesn't mean that you can raise endowment money faster than MIT. Sure its fun to think that some unknown mystery donor is going to give your school one of the largest donations in American history... but realistically its not going to happen.

Honestly, I don't even know what the argument is about here. I was almost positive that several other members would agree with me, but guess not.

Sometimes I think I could come on here and tell you that UND doesn't own the moon, and 10 or 15 of you would point at the ralph and tell me that "We could own it, people said the same thing about the ralph. Man they were wrong!".

  6. Well, if you don't believe that's possible at UND over the course of 10 years, how ever did this happen?

And "not trying to be a jerk here", but that "is in addition to what people are already giving in scholarships, athletic tickets, athletic gifts, facility repairs, ... " :silly:

So I take it you're willing to give up any new construction on campus in the next 10 years to fund this endowment? Or you think there is enough money to continue construction, as well as gain another half billion dollars for the school?

If anything, you've just proved my point. The total amount of construction from all funding sources at UND in the last 10 years has been less than the amount you're talking about raising. How in the world can you expect to double that amount of money?

Like I said (and has sarcastically been replied to), I'm not trying to be a jerk, but that figure is ridiculous.

  7. Well, I have season tickets and drive from Alexandria and there are a good number of people who drive from the Fargo/Moorhead area who are NDSU grads. Why do these people have season tickets to Fighting Sioux games instead of driving down the block to watch a Bison game?

I don't know Rick, why don't you tell us their background, and maybe we can give you an explanation? Did they grow in Grand Forks? Do they have relatives that play for the Sioux? Are they fans of other local D-II schools? Do they enjoy hockey, so they are forced to purchase tickets to the football game and want to use them? Are they visiting friends in Grand Forks that go to the games? Do they enjoy sports and split time between the Bison and the Sioux? Are they imaginary, and you just invented them in a vain attempt to convince others that UND is better than NDSU?

A little more info. for that question would be nice.

  8. Hmm, seems a $500 million endowment and a donated UND outdoor stadium make Bison fans nervous.

Perhaps you have more information than Kupchella and O'Keefe?

A few years ago, conventional wisdom also said:

-Grand Forks and UND would never recover from the 97 flood.

    -UND would never go DI.

You must be talking about the guys who said that a move to D-I was going to cost an extra 1 million a year a couple months ago....?

I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist posting that.

  9. Apparently Johnston isn't leaving after all. link. I still think he's a good coach, but I really hate it when coaches do this, i.e. announce they're taking a job only to reconsider after a day or two.

Guess he's going to be at SDSU for a few years. I don't see a school taking a chance on him after this for awhile.

  10. SDSU's Aaron Johnston Named UWGB's Women's Basketball Head Coach

Not necessarily surprised that SDSU lost their coach after their success the past couple of years, but UWGB is hardly that big a step up. The low salaries that SDSU pays may have been a major factor, especially considering SDSU probably could have dominated WBB's in the MidCon and had a bid in two years.

The argus leader article mentions that SDSU matched the offer from UW Green Bay, so I doubt salary was a concern either way. It is kind of a puzzling move though, I thought Johnstons next move up would be to a Big 10/12 program. I think SDSU may have some transition trouble because of Johnston's offense stressing speed, as opposed to size in many cases (fast skinny centers). It will be interesting to see if they can find somebody to step in with a similar offense to what Johnston had them running.

  11. Well, the newspaper says something about the gift, and then goes on to talk about research funding and the UND endowment, so..... my money would be on the gift having something to do with research funding and UND's endowment. Unless I'm giving the paper too much credit.

For sure, if this gift had something to do with athletics or athletic facilities, I would think that "Tom Buning, UND AD" or maybe "Steve Brekke, Director of Development, Athletics" would be present at the meeting. The director of "planned giving" being there tells me that somebody has probably named UND as a beneficiary in the event of their death, as long as I'm reading the title correctly.

  12. There's no way UNK would stay DII with the new 8k arena. They'd be competing with Cincy and Xavier for area bball recruits.

"Cincy" just signed a 5 star and top 20 recruit in the country for 2008. I highly doubt that a new move up, no matter how nice their arena, is going to be competing with either of those teams for recruits for a long time. Both of them go head to head with Ohio State for recruits on a yearly basis.

  13. Oh, ok. Wow, I am impressed and since you took Poly Science classes in college I am sure most of us are shaking in our boots. :D You obviously wasted your money then. :silly:

The matter of fact just because UND alumni and friends are spending their money on this lawsuit fund it's really not fair to assume if these people weren't spending money on the lawsuit they would spend it on something else at UND, that's just not true to assume that at all maybe they just spend the money at their lake home. Like Scott_M said maybe they just spend the money on other things like women and Keystone Lite or maybe they buy a new vehicle or something else that is tangible.

Alright, honest question here. I've read this same argument about 20 times in a row now.

So are you guys saying that NONE of the money that is being spent on the law suit would have been spent other places? Because my GUESS is its about 50-50. But even if only 10% of that money would have been spent at other locations on campus, and the other 90% is free and clear, doesn't that validate the argument that at least some of this money could be put to better use? 10% of that money would be one more kid going to UND for free, isn't that a valid argument? I think that while its definitely naive to think that all of this money would have been spent on campus, its equally naive to think that none of it would. And if some of it would have been spent in other locations, isn't that the point?

  14. The part that everybody seems to be ignoring is about how the arrangements with the Englestead and Alerus are making it difficult for UND to succeed, as was stated in the newscast. I think that may be more of the reason that Carr and Associates were complaining about the facilities, and I guess it must be a problem since nobody wants to talk about it here...

  15. 9 conference members is hardly perfect. It leaves a conference member with a NC game to schedule each week of the conference season.

10 is ideal as it still gives each team 4 home and 4 away. The only negative there is you don't play one team each year.

That's less of a negative in my book then having to schedule a hard to find NC game in the conference season.

Does that mean you're giving up on UND/USD/NDSU/SDSU all being in the mid con now? After all, that league is currently at 10.

  16. Tom Buning was on the radio a little while ago talking about the report. He said that the budget numbers discussed would put UND in the top 2 or 3 for any conference that they may get involved with, including Mid-Con, Big Sky or several others. It also includes inflation increases for the current budget. The $1 or $2 million discussed before was new spending, it did not include inflation. So, my guess is that the actual budget in 5 years will be somewhere in the middle. That would make it more than the initial estimates but less than this report.

With a Hockey program and a football program, I would certainly hope that UND would be the highest budget program in the mid-con, and certainly in the top 3 in the big sky. If you're not, you don't have any chance of being competitive.

Does anybody know off the top of your head how much money in the budget goes strictly toward hockey (mens and womens). I know that it brings in a ton of money, but knowing the expenses for those two sports would make it easier to compare all other sports to where the SU's are currently at.

  17. I think you're confusing someone else with me. One of the few things I've said about NDSU's transition is that I thought they should be paying MORE attention to the recommendations from their consultant's study. A main thing I was saying about UND, before they announced their move, was that they needed to get an external evaluation of reclassification potential.

You seem to criticizing UND for having to go to a consultant to get an accurate number, while simultaneously lavishing praise on NDSU for using a consultant to come up with what proved to be a great number. :D

I think he is pointing out that people in some circles would view it as misleading to say that it is going to cost $XX to go D-I when the decision is initially made, only to give a figure less than a year later that is 10 times that amount. After all, when these were the recommendations for going D-I in the first place that Kupchella allegedly used to make his decision, shouldn't people be a little more upset that the amount of money he was considering for the move was only 1/10 th the actually amount needed? You would think something like that would be a big influence in a decision of this magnitude, wouldn't you? One has to ask what the actually point of this report was in the first place....

Starcity is right though, people need to actually view the report so that what was actually budgeted can be determined. Its stupid to draw conclusions before seeing that. Right now it just doesn't look good on the surface.

  18. Why is 10 better than 12?

See, you've got it backwards there. I don't need to prove why 10 is better, you need to prove why members would want to expand to get to 12. Action has to take place to get to 12, and it has to be a unanimous vote, to avoid losing school that count toward big dance eligibility. I see no reason or way that all members would be in favor of voting in another 2 members from anywhere. The conference didn't expand to get above 8 before, why would they expand now to get to 12? Believe it or not, Oral Roberts, UMKC, Western Illinois etc. could all care less about reviving the old NCC, or seeing all of the dakotas united.

The burden of proof is on you, not me. What advantage would 12 offer that would make Oral Roberts want to come to the Dakotas for 4 basketball games a year instead of 2?

  19. Anyone who thinks the SU's are going to leave the mid con in 2-5 years is forgetting one thing: they agreed to an early termination fee of something like $500,000 if they leave in less then 8 years. I realize a half a million bucks isn't what it used to be, but considering how they flinched over paying an up front initiation fee, they aren't going anywhere. Heck, they'll be waiting for us with open arms when we come calling to join.

Sorry, but if you don't think the SU's would pay 500,000 to get into the missouri Valley, you're crazy. I doubt that they get into the mo valley, but its not going to be because of money. Both of those schools would do almost anything to join an elite mid-major like the mo. valley.

And a conference at 10 members waiting with open arms for UND and USD? I think not.
