  1. Like a few people have said before, it's much easier to fall, than it is to rise in the rankings. Outside of true statement wins (i.e. beating another Top 25 team), I doubt you see anybody jump over a team that also won. UND is at #22 in the STATS poll (using that one, because that's what everyone seems to use on tv broadcasts). #17 Albany, #20 Harvard and #21 UNI all lost. I bet they'll either be 19 come Monday. Got to keep stacking wins!

  2. One major concern I have right now is with the kicking game. Wasn't Taubs able to kick it into the end zone as a freshman? It didn't cost us today, but SUU started with great field position more times than not.

So UND is the only team in the Big Sky that can win a championship, huh.  Should be a clean sweep in FB and both basketballs in a year or so.

Championships come from great coaches, the right culture, the right leadership not from nicier weight rooms, lounges, more SID's, etc.

Do you really not understand the point?

Have fun doing what everyone else does.

This topic is kind of going off the rails. My opinion on wanting the sport cut is strictly based on the financial situation the athletic department is currently in and the fact that a couple sports need to go. It wouldn't be cut the sport, just to cut it.

This will probably make me look like the bad guy, but there are only three UND sports I care about. Men's Hockey, Basketball, Football. Outside of those three, whichever other sport has the highest price tag, I'd vote to cut (again, since UND will be cutting sports).

Maybe some of you who are talking about "just look at the poor attendance" should start going to some of the games.  I go to probably 10-12 home games a year.  No, it's not the men's game.  But it's an afternoon at the rink, the kids have fun, and it's good hockey.

Just like pretty much everyone else, I'll pass.

I challenge someone to explain why the sport is considered boring and if you use physicality please explain to me how UND minny games are more physical than some mens games and how its ok to cut a sport just cause you dont like it.. some folks in atlantic hockey prefer football yet some of those schools still have hockey

Just look at the attendance, that's pretty much all you need to know. If it was entertaining, people would show up.

Spoken like a true UND sports fan, rather than a fan of the University of North Dakota. Your compassion is underwhelming, to say the least, as is your appreciation for all that a university entails. And how on earth are layoffs and program terminations "not like the loss of a career"...that is exactly what is happening when employees lose employment and athletes (who do not or cannot transfer) lose playing opportunities.

Enjoy your 4-5 sports offerings, if that many make your preferred cut. It's attitudes like yours that will hasten the demise of college athletics, which is most certainly not a business.

    You are the worst, imo

My concern is do we even have room for Bowers next year? We have a log jam at forward now.

No seniors and Boeser being the only definite early departure. I count 3 forwards that have to almost be locked in coming next year in  Kawaguchi, Mismash and Adams. Besides that Mattson and Keane seem like they'd be likely too.

  9. Here's the thing I'm struggling to figure out about everyone talking about UND's weak conference schedule. Wouldn't the same apply to EWU and Montana then as well? I know they play each other, but based on their logic that UND doesn't play anybody, wouldn't both those schools only play 1 good conference opponent? I would say that's a pretty weak conference schedule as well.

I better throw in there that UNI probably can't make the playoffs either if UND wants to host.

Correct, it'd be key for both SDSU and UNI to miss the playoffs. That's why this weekend is interesting. I'd never cheer for NDSU, but it might be better for UND if NDSU beat the Jacks. Losing to NDSU won't drop them a lot, but it will give them 3 loses, which will in turn kind of put them on the bubble as far as one more loss (have a pretty tough schedule), would really hurt. That being said, if either / both go 7-4 they will be in no question. Getting SDSU to 5 losses is pretty tough to do, could see UNI going 6-5.

Well, another week and another step (err giant leap) forward. There will be a few people eating crow, after stating that this would absolutely be a close game. I'll call it a statement win, because we have been wondering when this type of offensive performance would show up, though it certainly wasn't over a good team.

    -Defense remains dominant

-Keaton looks to be back to last year's form; passing, running, confidence, etc.

-I don't like injuries, but the injuries forcing the changes to the offensive line appear to have been a blessing in disguise. O-line has been much much better.

-Was pulling Cloyd's shirt a complete waste? He still has time to get involved in the play and make a difference, but not much yet.

-IF UND can play like that game in, and game out, there is a ton of potential for this team. Best part, after a slow start, this team has gotten its confidence back. That is huge!

One thing I'll never understand is pulling a redshirt and not playing the person, or barely playing the person. If it's completely out of necessity, then I'd understand. The Cloyd situation though doesn't make any sense.

The reason I think it matters where we stand now is that it is hard to move up but easy to move down with a loss.  At 24 we can't afford to move down at all.  If we were higher we could afford a loss much easier and still be in position for the playoffs.

    What he said.

What style points? You beat a 1-5 team that lost at home to a Division 2 team. You don't get style points for that, you just better win. I heard someone (Jack Michaels or Joel Heitkamp) saying the toughest game left in UND's schedule may be Northern Colorado in Greeley. There are no style points left on your schedule. You just better win all of your games if you want a slam dunk playoff bid. 8-3 with that schedule is not a guarantee.

I agree with this post. 8-3 might not be good enough depending on which game they lose. UND's 0-2 start really put themselves in a hole that they are just starting to dig themselves out of. Everyone is on the same page that every game here on out is basically like a playoff game. There are no teams left on their schedule that will be a real big shot in the arm to the pollsters like after the Cal Poly win. If they continue to win, I'd expect maybe gaining 1 to 3 spots a week, depending on what else happens. A loss however and when they lose could really be devastating. Each game is obviously important for one reason or another. They absolutely need to win the next 3.

SUU - UND is just beginning to get some traction again. A lose and they most likely fall out of the Top 25 and will have a mountain to climb the rest of the year                           @ISU - Bottom team in the Big Sky                                                                                                                                                                                                            Weber - Middle of the road team at home

After the next 3 weeks the playoff picture should be a little more clearer. They need the next 3.

Embarrassing article, I bet Erik Jonnason II is really patting himself on the back for being such a hero. I'll never be able to wrap my head around how a "Sioux Sucks !@#$" chant or the Sioux-Per-Drunk Springfest tshirts can in anyones mind be racist. Does Erik think that a single student when saying that chant is referring to actual Native Americans? Or when the students made those t-shirts it was not a play on words with the old nickname / what happens at Springfest but they were somehow making fun of the alcohol problems that is taking place on reservations. Give me break.

To which even remotely analogous situation are you referring?  Kelley and Kennedy both did their fair share of investigating and condemning, but I certainly don't recall any students being punished where First Amendment rights were implicated.

The difference was Kelley always seemed to go "over the top" when condemning. Making sure everyone knew that they could seek counseling after the Springfest / Sioux-Per-Drunk t-shirt situation. Forcing Gamma Phi to do sensitivity training over the banner deal (still not sure how that was offensive).

Not a first amendment rights issue, but he handled the Lamda Chi situation so poorly. Basically convicting those students in the court of public opinion. He never apologized for that after it was proven the student made it up.

  16. In a letter to the campus community Wednesday, Kennedy condemned the two photos, but said a zero-tolerance policy is not possible for UND's campus.

"While I appreciate the desire for such a policy, it is unachievable under the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution," Kennedy wrote. "The challenge we all face is to find the balance between wanting to eliminate expressions of racism and bigotry and supporting the free speech guaranteed by the First Amendment. If we value freedom of speech, we must acknowledge that some may find the expressions of others unwelcome, painful, or even, offensive. We can, however, speak out and condemn such expressions, and we can work to create a more welcoming and inclusive environment."

Kennedy couldn't have handled this any better. Refreshing to see after how big of disaster Kelley was in situations like this. Well done.

  17. If you look at UND's schedule in all reality they can't lose the following games and still have a realistic shot at the playoffs, even if they win every other game.

    • @ Sac State
    • @ Idaho State
    • Weber State

I think losing any of those 3 games would torpedo them so far in the rankings they couldn't dig themselves out. That's why, especially on the road this game makes me nervous.

It's exciting though, every game has huge implications! Just keep winning!

I thought he left the Idaho State at Halftime with a healthy lead. He then missed the next 2 games due to that injury.

You are right, read your post wrong.

    Hello,

I think the concerns of this being a trap game and the worries over past performances against poor teams are not warranted. Bubba is great and deserves all the credit he is given but I think Studsrud is being overlooked. His presence is as important as anybody.

He is 12-3 in his last 15 games. His 3 losses are to NDSU, Bowling Green, and Stony Brook. (somebody please confirm my numbers)

As long as he is our QB I have no concerns against lesser teams. The defense it top notch and the OLine appears to be on the upswing.

I'm expecting a long winning streak and I plan to enjoy it.

Missing the 3 straight losses to Idaho State, Weber State and Montana last year.

  20. If at the end of the day, the University gets down to 17 or 18 athletic programs and they join the Summit for all but Football, I'll consider it a great success. To me this seems like the most logical solution that will allow UND to not only save money on a couple non-revenue sports, but also save for travel. Reinvest those saving into the other sports and become more completive across the board. Get it done Kennedy!
