University of North Dakota Hockey 2017-18 Season
AJS replied to Frozen4sioux's topic in Men's Hockey
Injuries are part of the game and the break can't come soon enough for this team to hopefully get healthy. That said, this has helped get everyone playing time, which will pay off down the road. Every member of the team has played this year with Rieger at 6 having the lowest total. I really did like what Gornall brought to the table and he would have contributed this year, but him leaving early will be a blessing going forward. Basically you are trading Weatherby for Gornall next year, which should be a net positive for the team. Also, like I mentioned above, it's getting guys like Rieger playing time they would have not otherwise. -
I'll take UND's chances going against SCSU for a recruit 10 out of 10 times, I'd be shocked in Randklev picks SCSU over UND and Minnesota.
-
Looks like Minnesota is throwing their hat in the ring for Randklev.

Exactly, have no problem with the disallowed goal. This appeared to be a classic make sure the PP's are even at the end type game. Some seem to have a short memory when talking about officials and poorly called games. The problem is as a group I don't want UND fans to look like the "refs are always against us" type crowd. IMO there was a huge difference between last night and Saturday in Denver (and pretty much any game in UND history and Saturday night in Denver). Brandt did say it with about 10 left when UND couldn't capitalize, you knew the next time the refs could, they were going to call something on UND, which I understood. Kind of snow balled from there, thought the call on Shaw was weak, but the next one of Wolanin was definitely a hold. Then of course the dive at the end, which at full speed, you can't blame the refs, given the sell job by WMU. Overall, great win by UND, I know it's still December, but tonights game has huge implications. WMU is a good team and UND doesn't travel to the Zoo this year, a sweep would go very far in the overall picture of the year. The NCHC is tough, need to sweep at home.
-
We did see the replay, I am a little confused with the no-contact crowd. Zero contact to the legs, but it did look like Garnders elbow clipped him in the side. Edit: And by side, it was more the WMU player was already slightly passed him, so it would have been side / back. That being said, I'd need to see a different angle, because it's possible there was no contact as Garnders elbow would have just skimmed him from what it looked like on the replay.
-
The only way I could see this as a possibility is if you watched it live, then immediately shut off the tv before they showed the replay multiple times. I can agree that live it looked bad, until you see the replay where it's not possible to conclude there was any contact with the legs. It was a very good dive, Garnder's elbow clipped him.
-
Didn't you catch the replay the multiple times they showed it after?
-
I'll never understand it, but Dipietro needs to pick his spots a little better, maybe wait for the NCAAs to put on a show like that. The officials with obviously review and see how outrageous the dive was, should be a marked player in their eyes moving forward.

I was just talking about the guys who will be here next year, but a Rizzo / Blaisdell class coming out of the BCHL in 2 years would be phenomenal. Both have the same stat line of 4-10-14 in what would be their junior high school year.
-
Looking at next years recruits currently playing in the BCHL you have: Weatherby: Tied for first in points w/ 41. Second in goals with 21 Tychonick: Tied for fourth in points for a defenseman w/ 23 (as an '00 much younger than leaders who go '97, '98', 97', 98') Scheel: Best GAA at 1.88, 2nd in SV% at .936 Nice forward, defenseman, goalie combination with that group. Now, it's on the rest of the group to pick up their numbers.

Landon Parker with a nice start to his season at EGF, 2-1-3 in 2 games. Was the Bantam Elite League MVP last year. MN Hockey hub has him as a 9th grader, is that correct? Netural Zone has him as a Jan 1st, 2002 DOB, is that correct? Those two don't really mesh, early '02 / late '01 would normally be a sophomore. Looking at the college hockey landscape, a lot of 02's have been going off the board. Minnesota is now at 7, 02's or younger. Would like to see UND get Parker / Cole Shepard locked up in the '02 category.
-
I'm in the same boat, big difference between players UND is actively recruiting and a list of good hockey players.
-
That's how I read it.
-
Hope Berry is putting on the full court press, think he could be a very good college hockey player.
-
This isn't necessarily meant to be a shot at Cam even though it'll sound like one, but 50% of the games he's played were against basically the two worst teams in the country. That'll help anyone's numbers. Played great against Minnesota and is the guy this year, but like when comparing records, the opponent needs to be taken into account.

Although I stand by my comment and trust the coaching staff, I do find this commitment a little odd. The reasoning is as follows. 2018 Freshman Class Keane (F) Hain (F) Senden (F) Mattson (F) Weatherby (F) Tychonick (D) Scheel (G) Replacing 3 Senior Forwards, Gornall, Gersich (Early), Wolanin (Early), C. Johnson 2019 Freshman Class Donovan (F) Costello (F) Caulfield (F) Blaisdell (F) Bernard-Docker (D) Replacing Jones, Gardner, JJ, Mismash (Early), Shaw 2020 Freshman Class Kleven (D) Reid (D) Frisch (D) Mancinelli (F) Pinto (F) Replacing Poolman, Johnson, Peski, Smith, Hoff, Bowen, Yon 2021 Freshman Class Bowen (F) Kunz (F) They basically have 2018 / 2019 Freshman Class full. I could see possibly pushing Costello back to 2020 (that would be 3 full years of juniors though) to make room for Rizzo. So, I'm pretty much saying that ship has sailed with Rizzo. Now I don't see how you'd have room for Randklev from Moorhead, unless you push Costello back. This was just a long post saying the coaching staff must really, really like Pinto, since he's taking one of the few spots left. Side note: That 2019 class is stacked, that 2020 Defensive Class is ridiculous too
-
This over and over, the reaction was ridiculous. Per Schlossman's article, he'll be playing for Lincoln next year, which will be his Senior year in HS, how about we see how he does there before we jump to conclusions.
-
He's a November '00 birth date, so he'd only be a junior in HS.

I'll sum up my feelings on both games in this post. They definitely weren't as sharp as they could be on Friday, but overall, I didn't think they looked that bad. It reminded me of a game that would end their season in March / April. Outplay their opponent, but just can't bury the puck. In fact, I thought they had much better opportunities on Friday than Saturday. This year, I'll still say they've only had two games where I thought they played terrible (1) St. Lawrence Saturday (2) CC Friday, these two games wouldn't go under that category. The tie on Saturday was important, I just think we can mark this weekend up to (1) Opponents goalie > UND's goalie (2) No puck luck -- I actually thought Thome played well on Saturday, but Friday was the first time since Thome has been in, when I thought having Cam play might have made a difference. UND proved last weekend that they can play with and beat the best, now they just have to work on consistency.
-
This is well said, I can get on the same page that although I don't think it was a major, I can see why it was called a major. My overall problem with Saturday wasn't any one call in particular, but them collectively. Probably will never see another game called like it.
-
This is my thought as well, it's a shame Plant got hurt, but that's not a 5 minute major.

North Dakota vs. Union (Thanksgiving Edition)
AJS replied to fightingsioux4life's topic in Men's Hockey
Important non-conference series (like they all are), need a sweep. Union looks to be Ok, but UND can't really afford any non-conference losses.- 31 replies

Berry took the high road, like you'd expect him to do, but does anyone one else wish he would have taken a strong stance and really questioned what happened on Saturday? I wouldn't feel this way if Motzko hadn't the week before. If Berry has the same type of comments Motzko did, two different coaches, two different weeks, that puts a lot of eyes on how games are called in Denver.

I won't quote @The Sicatoka entire post, but just one part. "So you're telling me in 2+ periods of hockey DU never slashed, never took a step into a guy's open skating lane, never gave a little tug with the stick blade on a hip, never left a stick in a guys feet staggering him, never grabbed on a bit too hard or a bit too long along the boards. In today's college hockey." I've said I don't think there were any phantom calls against UND, but when I talk about "unique" and never have seen anything like it, above has a lot to do with it. Matching up minors is the worst, so I'm far from that, but never have I seen every call go one way. Not only every call go one way, but never have I seen a situation where one team has 4 or 5 calls go against them in a row and the refs are calling questionable (not blatant // not Wolanin's, that was) calls on that team.
