  1. Thome should be in Columbus today for dev camp, if anyone wants to follow the jackets. They usually do a fair amount of updates and stream the scrimmage on the last day every year. Also. Crookston's Paul Bittner has taken over their Snapchat account.

Can anyone photopshop this logo and add the beak and eye of Ben's latest hawk mockup, please? I think we are getting closer...

IMHO, Take out the button so it is not as "head dressy" and take the eye straight off the old logo. I also like the beak profile that the student did that gives a negative space North Dakota outline.

So last year Cam and Luke (Johnson) had C. Johnson and L. Johnson on the back of their jersey.  Wonder what they are going to do next year with Cam and Casey?!! Can't put Ca. Johnson.  I realize this is a very low priority compared to other 2016-2017 season story lines.  But hey, it's mid June and there is no hockey being played right now.  Gotta talk about something!!!! :)

It would be neat if Cam had his full name on there "CAM JOHNSON" . . . unrealistically, but Casey could maybe put "SON OF JOHN" on his.

The got Terevainen for nothing....and have tons of cap space.  They'll be fine.  They won this deal.

CHI got a 2nd and a 3rd. Those are way more valuable the way CHI uses picks.

Not only they do have lots of cap space as some have mentioned, but Bickell's contract isn't on the books very long. Teuvo is a very promising piece and they know what they have a good idea what they are getting (just don't know his ceiling for sure). 2nd and 3rd round picks are unkown commodities. Yeah, Chicago has been doing good in the draft, but most 3rd rounders won't see the NHL.

I think it was 2013 when they dumped back in black and started a new intro with welcome to the jungle I thought that is a good choice of intro music (my favorite is Enter Sandman at Virginia Tech), along with that was a new intro showing clips of years past a good hype video. I think all of that was gone last year, the music, the video, it wasn't right. I loved the lights out, the hype video and GNR playing while UND runs through the helmet. But you would think after we have been in that building since 2001 they could find something everyone likes and stick with it like at the REA.

I think they should run out to, "Now You've Got Something to Die For," by Lamb of God . . .

my wolves was thrown out, I assumed, because we didn't want to be a generic animal... little did I know I should have suggested fighting wolves

I had also suggested Direwolves (I suggested a lot of things).

Gotta at least give Ed this, he isn't trying to pretend that the name is anything other than what it is, generic and bland. But I would agree that he is omitting the larger role that Kelley and the Committee played in selecting the nicknames.

I think Ed is pointing out 2000 amateurs picked "Hawks", just like thousands of other amateurs picked Hawks at so many other schools transitioning from Native related names. So yeah, he is saying it's generic and bland.

Professionals would have taken time to really find something that is unique and distinct to and about North Dakota.

Ed comes from the mindset of "this is my job, I'm going to do it". You could see it in the way he handled the budget; if he could have, he'd have handled the nickname the same way. The predecessor was all committees and consensus; all that gets you is bland and generic.

Yeah, he said it was generic and bland:

"but we're not starting out saying this is really meaningful to North Dakota," he said. "It's not some unique special thing North Dakota has"

The problem is that the criteria this team they put together was supposed to use included exactly that. 2000 amateurs submitted 1990 terrible ideas and a couple decent ones. A few of those were unique and/or unique/relevant to North Dakota and yet we came out with a generic non-relevant one. It should blow my mind, but it doesn't.

Full disclosure: I submitted "Badlanders" (and still love it) which I think made it through a couple sets of cuts . . .  I also submitted Plainswalkers, hahaha and Green Reapers (like death with a green hood or eyes and a big scythe for cutting down wheat). I think North Dakota Spirit Lake would have been awesome too, but no way they would let that one through.

Whatever happened to Tambolini? Didn't he dominate here and then go to mj and get dominated by the superior the skill being played by 1st rounder after 1st rounder on a nightly basis?

What? He didn't do anything HERE, then went to the WHL and tore it up in major juniors. Also, did alright in the AHL, I believe. I'm not sure if your post is sarcasm . . .

    Alright, that's aggressive. :)

Yeah, I really doubt UND is beating AHL teams. I would say that they can be competitive in the ECHL and beat some of them.

Vastly superior defense compared to anything they've played. Bigger, stronger, more experienced, solid 3rd and 4th lines, and no shortage of drafted players.

Agreed, an entire roster filled of really good 20-22 year olds and a couple elite players vs a roster filled with really good 18 year olds and a couple elite younger players . . . Not to say that the roster from London doesn't have a little more potential, they just wouldn't win most games currently.

If he likes music, there's the monthly "Blues on the Red" series. http://downtowngrandforks.org/happy-harrys-blues-on-the-red-concerts/  There are also other random music concerts on occasion.  There's also a newer event called "Alley Alive": https://www.facebook.com/alleyalive/.  And I haven't been to it yet, but would like to attend the concerts in the garden at the NDMOA. http://www.ndmoa.com/concerts

The greenway is always good for biking, running, roller blading, etc.

Depending on when he gets here, there is the Grand Cities Art Fest, as well as the weekly Farmer's Market.

River Cities speedway has races on the weekends.

For golfing, I really like the Larimore Course, and you stop at Larimore Dam or Turtle River State Park for fishing, bike riding, camping, etc.

Grand Cities Art Fest is in June, and the monthly Art and Wine walks start in June as well.

    Grand Forks roller derby!?

If he has some time, I would make sure to take at least one trip to Winnipeg. They have a good dinner theatre (currently doing a spoof on Big Bang Theory), the Museum of Human Rights is amazing, go to a Blue Bombers game (CFL).

In Fargo, they have the Fargo Redhawks minor league baseball team.

  11. Paul Ladue made his AHL debut in Ontario last night, against my Monsters (darn conflicts). Anyway, I believe he was out there for a goal against, but also a goal for, so he came out even with no points and two shots. (Derek Forbort was even as well). Didn't get a chance to catch a feed of the game, so not sure how he looked or how much ice time he saw though.

Harrison, says he'll skip the Super Bowl champion's visit to the White House to meet President Barack Obama on Thursday, just as he did when the Steelers were honored by President George W. Bush in June 2006.

"I don't feel the need to go, actually, I don't feel like it's that big a deal to me."

Harrison doesn't believe the invitation is all that special, saying if the Steelers hadn't beaten the Cardinals 27-23 with a last-minute rally, "He [Obama] would have invited Arizona."

You can try and spin it anyway you want but Harrison explains it the best and proves that it is just a Dog and Pony show to make it seem like the President is a regular person.

Shoot, if I am ever president I am going to change it up. Instead of inviting the World Series Champs, and the Super Bowl Champs, et al. I am going to invite just a bunch of randos, like the guy who wins the MTG World Championship.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA...... that is the most foolish thing I have heard all week.

    1. We were comparing NCAA sports, not college hockey to a different league not associated with the NCAA

    2. 30% of NHL rosters are made up of players who played in the NHL

    3. the only ones that consider MAJOR JUNIORS (difference between Junior hockey and Major Juniors) a step above college hockey are the ones who run the CHL, WHL and the QMJHL

I believe that all things considered a good NCAA team beats a good CHL team, that being said . . . it does help that our players are older.

Let's not get carried away favorably comparing DI hockey with FCS football.

Last I checked only 60 teams play the highest level of NCAA hockey; 125 football teams in FCS.

Last I checked only 32 teams were playing in the NFL.

The food is the only reason to make a trip there.  The beer was extremely underwhelming.  Tried 6 of their beers two weeks ago and none of them were good.

I have been there twice and ordered one of everything both times . . . cause I'm a man.

Both times, they had about 1 or two beers that I really, really liked and maybe one or two that weren't so bad (they had an amazing beer the first time, wasn't there the second), only one that was really off-putting. Now, this could be because I drank one of everything . . . their food on the other hand, I haven't brought myself to eat there yet as I have not heard great things. Though a few things really sound good.

Rhombus pizza is good, just don't know about the food at the brewery.

It's ignorant because you don't agree with it? If his opinion that FCS is JV, that's his opinion. By the definition of it not being the top tier in college football, it's fairly accurate.

It was a clean, light-hearted shot at NDSU. Pump the brakes.

I always look at it like this: When we win in hockey, we are the best in the country and our team could probably beat some mainstream pro teams. IE, some of the ECHL teams . . . When NDSU wins (or if we somehow won) in football, they are still probably about the 40th best team in the country and would get smoked by a professional practice squad. That's not to say that when they win they shouldn't be proud or happy of a great accomplishment, but it COULD be viewed as inferior. This isn't ripping NDSU, we are clearly even more inferior football wise than they are.

I became a Sioux fan when I moved to Grand Forks in 2005, so I don't really know about a lot of the players in the past, but what I've seen I can narrow it down to-

Forwards- Matt Frattin, Ryan Duncan, Caggiula

    Defensemen- Chay Genoway, Ben Blood

    Goalie- Eidsness

Greatest name of all time: Ben Blood, Miroslav Satan

I always picture them to look like the diehard fans that are really into the game being played and have a strong handle on the current state of the team/program when they talk. I'm sure there are exceptions but this is what I usually think.

    What does we look like?

Each year when we wonder who will sign early I often wonder how long it will be until Brad is offered and accepts another position somewhere else. If he ever had to fill out a time card for the Herald one would wonder if he is ever off the clock. I am also thankful for his dedication and his insight in what he does. There is a reason why fans of other hockey programs follow him and often he is the first read of the day for many across the World. Thank you Mr. Schlossman!

Well said, I have friends from MU that I will text every now and then and say, "Oh, man, blah blah blah." and they respond with, "Yeah, I follow Schlossman on twitter."

They do this by design.  They take some young prospects and mix in some vets.  Their young team lost to Finland in OT yesterday.

Yes, but when Wideman and Foligno, may peace be upon him, are the two best vets on the team  . . . (and I am a huge Foligno fan). I am guessing they have their World Cup roster loaded up and this is just a second third fourth thought.

Oh my Ra, this needs to be cross posted and go viral . . . best idea for a fighting hawks logo possible. If they roll with a Ra inspired fighting hawk, they can take all my money and we will replace the greatest logo in sports with the next greatest logo in sports. This would honestly save the entire debacle for me (short of keeping the nickname, rolling as just North Dakota, this is the best possible solution).

Seriously, FB, tweet, email SME Branding . . .
