  1. Why doesn't Glas state the facts?  Instead he tries to make it sound like Allen hung around for a day or two and got a "free" room (I guess that means the Beez, not Allen paid for it).  Never mind that the team supported him for 10 days.  Im not too encouraged that  the institution is reporting accurately.  That would mean listing the number of days Allen was on the roster, the support he received during that time including meals, rooms, travel and money.

You aren't "encouraged that the institution is reporting accurately". Well, if you know all of the facts, what are they? Rich Glas has been coaching at UND a long time. He hasn't had any sort of violations in recruiting that I'm aware of, ever. I think he deserves the benefit of the doubt on this. That doesn't excuse, though, that UND should have been able to find this information out.

They should also include the relationship with his "agent".  If the "agent" ever appeared to be representing Allen's interests he could be construed as having a contract.
This is not true. The only way this friend/adviser/mentor would be considered an agent is if Allen (or Allen's family) paid him for his services.

The fact that this information is so readily available may indicate that due diligence wasn't followed in checking Allen's background or the administration was fully aware but thought they could get away with it.

Isn't it obvious that due diligence wasn't followed? Anyone? Hello? Jeez, add something to the conversation that hasn't been said already.

As for UND thinking that they could "get away with it", come on. Like I said above, I can't think of ONE example of Rich Glas getting into trouble during his tenure at UND for recruiting violations. He has always run an honest program as far as I (we) know. If you know something different, by all means let's hear it.

  2. Please, don't be so ignorant to dismiss the possibility of "easy-A's" at UND.

I know there are indeed ''easy-A's" at UND. Maybe a couple of UND's scholar athletes have puffed up GPA's because of that, but certainly not all of the athletes take creampuff schedules. The schooling is actually important to some of them.

And UND by no means is the only school in the country that has classes that are "easy-A's". I would guess even the vaunted NDSU has a couple. ???

  3. If Allen is found in violation, I think the proper NCAA course of action is to revoke Allen's eligibility. If UND did not know about this, they shouldn't have to forfeit any games.

It sure sounds like UND didn't know about this. What I don't get about that is 'Why?'. If McFeely can find this stuff out, the UND should have been able to as well. It's not like it happened deep in the heart of Texas somewhere. It was 70 miles away in Fargo. I'm sure that they asked him if he had ever been to North Dakota. Just answering 'yes' to that question would have been a HUGE red flag. How many kids from Texas have 'just visited' North Dakota? Not alot. And especially if he had heard of Minot.

If the NCAA indeed revokes Allen's eligibility completely, UND will forfeit the games he has played in. It doesn't look like there is any way around that.

On a semi-related note, does anybody remember the contoversy a year or two ago about interstate all-star high school BB games? I remember something about parents not letting their kids participate because of possible NCAA ineligibility, or something like that.

Wasn't there a lawsuit brought to fight that by Tyler Koenig from Fargo North? I think it was him and another kid (from Montana, maybe?) I can't remember his name though.

Is that the thing you are talking about? That was more of a rule that stated kids couldn't play on AAU teams more than 'X' miles from their hometown.

  4. He attended a college (maybe the one you mention) for a semester, but didn't participate on the basketball team. Thus, the 8 semesters of eligilbility within 10 is intact. Guess that doesn't matter anymore anyway.

This has no bearing on UND's other scholar athletes. "AD-induced "grade-inflation" practices"-- Please ???

    ***Newsflash***

NDSU has recruited juco players in the past, with some even on the current Men's BB roster.

  5. I just find it absolute hilarious how easy it was to find this (Clayton's google search). I mean come on, what the hell is the Atheltic Department here doing with their time. If this turns out to be true, heads had better roll in the department. If it was this easy for everyone to find, well, enough said about for those people whose job it was to find it.

Not only that, but didn't we have alumni that played for the Beez (Todd Johnson) and are still in the area?

The conversation could (should) have went something like "Hey coach, it's TJ. I see you signed that Myron Allen from Texas. We had a kid from down there try out for the Beez a couple years back by that name. Is he the same guy?" Coach Glas, "Thanks, TJ, I'll check it out."

Wouldn't have been too tough, not that it's TJ's (just an example) responsibility to keep tabs on UND by any means.

  6. What a shame that this happened. :p I fail to understand how the UND staff was unable to discover this. A simple internet search would have found the info about his release from the Bees. And even I can do that. It is on the second page of resultsfrom a Google search with the keywords "Myron Allen", basketball.

Just seeing his name should draw a red flag, as it is too much of a coincidence to not do some digging.

What is really embarassing is the fact that all of this took place in FARGO, for godsakes. ??? If Forum sports staff can uncover this by connecting a few dots, it's pretty disappointing that not one person at UND was able to do the same BEFORE the season began.

As an aside to this situation, is there a possibility of bringing in a juco point guard at the semester break? Do NCAA basketball rules allow for this? I know it happens in hockey, but wasn't sure about BB. Anyone?

  7. Its clear that he wasn't selected.  He may have been recruited but obviously his interview went poorly and he was given a way out by a gentleman.

If its not that he is a hayseed.  Why?  Because he strung out the offer, basked in the attention of the press,  acted like he was interested, kept everyone on a string for a week or two and then backed out?  Not very professional.  More like a country boy with his head spinning in the big city lights.  Just like a deer in the headlights.

Of course he may have wanted to draw the D1AA spotlight on himself so he would be positioned for a possible shot at the NDSU job or maybe Montana.  Both would be significant salary increases.

Time will tell.  I dont think he

  8. Jesse Bull is coaching a Bantam team at the Blake school.

Wes Dorey was recently released by the Idaho Steelheads for salary cap reasons(;)) Apparently Chris Marinucci (UM-Duluth Hobey Baker winner in 1994) was being underpaid, according to the league, and Wes was released to accomodate Marinucci.

Wes was picked up by the Anchorage Aces, wasn't sure if he wanted to report, but then agreed to this week.

Here's the ADN story about it. Wes Dorey

  9. I think that says a lot. I dont know what he might find on the film that would make him stay. He will take all the assistants and players he wants too.

It seems that D1AA football is a much better proposition for the coaches and players than it is for the average sue sox fan.

As with everything you have posted on this board since your account was created, you are WRONG!

    Lennon staying

  10. I think Al Pearson (aka Santa Claus) usually gets a bus together for some away games. I know they went to St. Cloud earlier this year. Others that post here have gone along at times. Al is the guy that always wears the white cowboy hat with the old Blackhawk logo on it.

Someone else should be able to provide some more info.

  11. I think that the arrogance displayed by a number of Gopher fans can be summed up with an example of a caller to today's PA and Dubay show on KFAN saying "North Dakota has a good program and all, BUT they should be thanking Minnesota. Minnesota gave them their arena, their head coach, and their best player. After all, Minnesota is the 'State of Hockey' and North Dakota is just an extension of our program and would be nothing without us. So North Dakota fans should be saying 'Thank you' to Minnesota".

PA then adds "Ralph Engelstad was one of us!"

Could there be any other answer to this poll question?

    shootdogger,

You're right. Except for the lack of seats on the ends, the extra rink on one end, and for the bleacher seats without backs, the banners hanging from the ceiling, and the exposed concrete blocks everywhere, the old REA is just like the NHC. :D;)

  12. OK, so Wanless has said that Lennon is a strong candidate. Now the question is does Lennon feel he's a strong candidate. Would anyone involved in Sioux athletics during his tenure ever want to work for Wanless again? It isn't necessarily about money, as the outgoing coach was paid $92,000 a year. That is less than Bob Babich makes to run NDSU's program into the toilet.

Here's a key sentence from the Sacramento Bee story: "Volek was out of town and unavailable for comment." Sounds like a typical Wanless move. Fire the guy when he is out of town.

The caption of Wanless' picture reads, "In the first major move of his administration, Sacramento State athletic director Terry Wanless on Tuesday announces the firing of football coach John Volek." The little guy sure likes to make his presence felt early, doesn't he?

  13. All I'm saying is that the alumni that remain alive and support the nickname are not going to just stand by and watch helplessly as the Lucy Gange's of the world tell the incoming American Indian students that they should feel oppressed because of the Fighting Sioux nickname. What is going on is absurd. For nearly 90% of the Sioux people, the name isn't even an issue. The other 10% are activists. Activists that find fault in EVERYTHING. Activists that protest just to protest. Activists that like to read their name in newspapers and other media outlets such as this website. Activists that will simply get bored at some point and move on to something else.

An example, Russel Means running for Tribal Chairman of the Pine Ridge. Last I heard, that race was in a recount process. Looks like Means has moved on to bigger and better things than the Sioux name. For now anyway.

The activists will move on. The supporters of the name will remain because we are loyal. We are connected. And we care.

The untimely death of Ralph Engelstad is not going to change that.

  14. For you to think that UND won't move forward and change the nickname is senseless on your part...

For you to even bring it up today, of all days, is completely asinine. As has been the case for quite some time, there will continue to be a debate regarding the nickname. Don't for a second assume that the 87% that support the nickname will remain silent and watch the name 'Fighting Sioux' be whimsically removed.
