PCM
Good news for MTU. OPIE GIVES $250,000 TO HOCKEY ENRICHMENT CAMPAIGN Lockerroom To Be Designated John and Tim Opie Huskies Den HOUGHTON, Mich. -- John Opie ('61) has committed $250,000 towards Michigan Tech's $3 million Hockey Enrichment Campaign, a gift he hopes will make a difference in helping move the storied program back to the success it once enjoyed. "I've always been interested in the hockey program," said Opie, noting that he often has discussed the program with (MTU athletics director) Rick Yeo. "I'm pleased to be able to help and I'll continue to do what I can for the athletic program at Michigan Tech." Opie is the retired vice chairman and executive officer of General Electric Company in Fairfield, Connecticut. He graduated from Michigan Tech in 1961 with a B.S. in metallurgical engineering. Opie has been a leading supporter of Michigan Tech. In 1999, he and his wife Ruanne donated $5 million to the University's Leaders for Innovation campaign, one of the largest individual gifts ever received at MTU. Thanks to his gift to the Hockey Enrichment Campaign, the lockerroom will be named the John and Tim Opie Huskies Den. "We're very grateful to John," said Rick Yeo, MTU's athletic director. "He's without question one of our great supporters and it's important to have others follow John's lead."
Blackheart
Maybe some of that money could be used for skating lessons for their goon squad...
Diggler
Maybe some of that money could be used for skating lessons for their goon squad... Or to buy a high chair for Conner so he can see over the bench.
bigmrg74
Guys, quit making fun of the Sister Mary's of the Poor up there in Yooperland. Money is tight with them and this is their chance to become a little more competive in Hockey once again. You know, somewhere around 7-4 score game against UND perhaps. Besides, its thanks to MTU alumni like Mr. Opie there, (gotta love Yooper names!! ) that I'll get to say that my football team will go into Michigan Stadium this year, and will be the favorate to win there. How often does that happen??

How often does that happen?? How many tickets have been sold for that game? And how come Tech isn't playing NMU for it? I would think that game would draw better. bigmrg74
You are kidding right??? GVSU is the biggest draw in the GLIAC man. You know how we travel man. The Bash at the Big House is a cherity game for MTU. They need every butt they can draw to the game, Bash at the Big HouseI'm not sure on ticket numbers yet, last I hear it might be somewhere around 30,000 perhaps. Diggler
Well I knew you guys traveled well, but I was under the impression that Tech-NMU was a big rivalry and therefore would draw a whole bunch of people. Guess not.
bigmrg74
Yeah they are, but do you really think they would be able to get enuff people out of the U.P. to drive all the way to the big city of Ann Arbor for a football game. Its about 5 hours from the bridge to AA. MTU does have a lot of alumni in the Detroit Metro Area, but not the same with NMU. GVSU has a sizeable alumni base though, plus they're only 2 hours away. Very doable roadtrip for us. And if you saw us in Alabama, you knows we love us some roadtrips!!!
