Ok, having watched Sioux hockey and ND State hockey tourneys I got to wondering about goaltender masks.

There are a lot of goaltender masks that are custom painted out there, including ones in high school (Bismark High's goaltender Ruud for example).

I was wondering how they afford it? Does the school pay for it as part of a scholarship (as far as the masks seen in college are concerned)? Does the school booster program foot the bill (high school)? Or does the player/parents purchase the custom apparel?

Anyone know how much, on average, mask painting costs?

I'm almost positive that the players pay for it by themselves. There is no way a high school booster program would pay that kind of money.

I believe JPar and Brandt get theirs payed for by UND. The budget is around $1.3 million for the men's hockey team I think. High Schoolers have to pay for them themselves. But, what's an extra $1000 or so when you've spent so much on the pads to begin with.
