Here's hoping lots of board members listened to this broadcast. They addressed the negative hysteria on this board a number of times.

As a former Offensive Lineman, it is hard to watch us not be able to run the football. To me, it's an attitude thing and you want to wear teams down with a road grader mentality. But, as I watched more, and started counting the guys in the box, SH consistently had more guys in the box than we could block. Take the picture below, yes, I know it's a red zone scenario, but they have 7 in the box. Blocking with only 5 lineman is not a recipe for success. I'm thinking that SH wasn't going to let our running game beat them, they wanted a freshman qb to beat them... and he did! Good win for the guys. Something to build on for next game. First, get healthy!
Thank you for your refreshing post. It's exactly what SHSU should have done. It was a good win.

Jones outplayed Stick in the preseason in my opinion, but you think beating out Jones is a huge accomplishment?
An FCS QB beating out Cardale Jones, a QB who beat Alabama and led his team to a national championship? Yes, I do think it’s an accomplishment.

NDSU is NOT an FBS program. And if they ever moved up for real, they would find that out pretty quickly. They could win the Sun Belt (which is pure garbage) and have some success in the Big 12 (lots of bad programs in that conference). But anything above that, they would get worn down by the depth and athleticism of FBS teams and their 85 scholarships. Look for some "Bring on Bama" or "Bring on Clemson" nonsense from the Moo U faithful in the coming weeks and months.
IMO they absolutely are an FBS level program. Obviously they aren’t nowhere near the Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson level, but they are a better program than a significant number of FBS schools. Their last 2 QBs are in the NFL, they’ve won however many FBS games in a row, however many FCS championships... I think the data is pretty clear.

Outstanding. Thank you, UND Fan, and thank you to all who donated. The football program has many needs... the funds will be put to good use.

31-6.
Our running game will not be where we want it to be yet but short passing game will hit its stride, their running game will do fairly well but will need to throw to catch up on the scoreboard, D will make life miserable for the true frosh QB.

So does that make it official that Fort and Beach are getting their redshirts pulled?
It will be official after they play in their fifth game.

I wouldn’t say that DL should be better this year at all.
I expect this position group to be the biggest issue this year. Opposing running teams should be encouraged by what we have up front. I'm more optimistic with passing teams; a good back 7 and an excellent pass rusher. If we score a lot, and opposing teams are forced to throw, I like our chances this year.

Anything else is a F-A-I-L-U-R-E.
Posts that have the "anyone who disagrees with me is wrong" subtext are, in my opinion, not helpful to this Hawk football community. It's a discussion board; "end of story" does not further discussion. There are many good posters here, yourself included, who are loyal and intelligent fans and I look forward to their thoughts on the football team. The trend in today's society of black or white opinions, no grey allowed, is troubling. I hope for a higher level of discourse and camaraderie.

End at 10:45. No afternoon session per NCAA rule change.

UND *should* beat Drake handily. If they don't, Bubba and the coaching staff failed the players and the players failed themselves. No excuse to play a non-scholarship Pioneer league team close if UND expects to be an FCS playoff team this season.
Remember, style points matter in college football and to the FCS playoff committee. UND needs to beat Drake by a sizable margin.
I agree with you. You seem to be missing that part of my comments, or I'm not being clear enough.

I feel like there's a lack of experienced depth on the OL, but not necessarily a lack of talent. I don't think OL will be a weakness, I'm expecting a few guys to break out. Projected starting OL looks good to me plus one of Helgren/Russo, Ventrelli is talented, Mortels solid if he can get healthy, and Nguon is a Swiss army knife that can be used in about any OL position, very valuable.
You nailed it. The 1's will be good. The 2's are inexperienced but talented; the hope is that they grow significantly during camp.
Knopf had his hits and misses recruiting wise (for instance, Hergel and Waletzko most recently are studs, some others not as much), which isn't a surprise considering how hard it is to project offensive linemen. Of course more recruiting hits are preferred, but I think he was replaced mostly because of the lack of growth each season on the field. The new coach is excellent; if there is significant growth on the line this year, I do not expect him to be at UND long term. We don't know how well he recruits, but he sure can coach.
Speaking of how hard it is to recruit/project college OLs, this is an excellent recent article on the subject (subscription required; the Athletic is excellent):

2015- UND 21/Drake 18 Yotes 52/Drake 0
2016- Jacks 56/Drake 28
2017- Yotes 77/Drake 7 Jacks 51/Drake 10
2018- Griz 48/Drake 16 Iowa St 27/Drake 24 (this game was a torrential down pour and mud fest, FYI)
Every good/decent FCS team has more/less smoked Drake early in the year. The exception was us in 2015 when we smoked them in the first half, then almost completely melted down and had to hang on. The following week the Yotes annihilate them 52-0. 2017 the Yotes 77-7, ouch!!
If this game is close we don't have a play-off caliber team. It's that telling to me.
You're right. I would hope we'd beat them handily, especially based on previous seasons and the results you posted.
But this is a different Drake team this year, and this is a different UND team. They have a brand new head coach, we have a new OC and a brand new style of offense, personnel is different, etc. You know how football works. It can be weird. But feel free to draw any conclusion you wish if UND doesn't win by the artificial margin you have deemed necessary.

I think it's important to note that game was a mud bowl and right before ISU played in their bowl game. I suspect ISU didn't show up for that one. Regardless, a good showing by Drake.
It's important to note the schedule in Drake's losses, too. A big part of football is WHEN you play a team, especially in college. It's why Ohio State can get blown out by Purdue then go on to win the Big Ten and the Rose Bowl - there are a million examples. That's why it's dangerous to compare records because they aren't apple-to-apples. And why conclusions cannot necessarily be drawn if we beat Drake by 1, lose by 1, or win by 50. The final score may be an indicator of future results, but often it's not.

One unmentioned place I like: Up North Pizza in EGF.
I want to love The Cay, but I think the wings are consistently overdone and average. Love the atmosphere. I'll keep trying it, though.
Haven't been to Speedway; I'll hit it up this weekend. Will go to Toasted Frog at some point, too. Usually have my daughter with me which makes Toasted Frog impossible.
Obviously Darcy's is a gem. Love love love.
Really like Sky.
I went to Speedway for the first time this weekend. Got the ribeye special. Food was good at a really fair price. I'll be back for sure.
Thank you for the suggestion, everyone.

Longtime Fan, I hesitate posting this as I hope you know I'm joking, but this is what I pictured when you said that UND did not prioritize QB recruiting:
Setting: UND Football Coaches Meeting Room, somewhere in the bowels of Memorial Stadium
Bubba: Let’s begin our discussion for our recruiting strategy for the upcoming year.
Ass’t Coach (excitedly raising hand): I’ve found an outstanding QB that loves UND! He’s got FBS offers, and I think I can get him to commit to us! He’s got program changing talent.
Bubba: Whoa, whoa, whoa there. Let’s not jump ahead! As we all know, our priority has always been other positions, not QB. So, who’s got some good punters we can talk about?
Ass’t Coach: Wait, what?
Bubba: As I preach, the most important play in football is the punt. Anyone have any good long snappers we can sign?
Ass’t Coach: Hold on. You can’t be serious. QB HAS to be our top priority! Isn’t it common knowledge that that QB is the most important position in sports?
Bubba: (Bursts out laughing)
Other ass’t coaches: (laughing, shaking heads, dabs eyes with kleenex)
Bubba: Field position wins games, not QBs. Right boys?
Other Ass’t Coaches: RIGHT, BUBBA!! (Coaches high five each other, bro hugs all around, one assistant shotguns a beer)
Bubba: Ok, ok, ok. I don’t think we need a big time QB, but go ahead and offer the kid a scholarship. But only offer him 1/3 of a full ride. We’ve got to save our scholarship money for some good looking tweeners from the state of North Dakota that we need for PR purposes!
(Assistant coaches spontaneously join arms and begin to sing the UND fight song)
Bubba: Meeting adjourned!
*end scene*

I agree with this. Not sure who would of ever wanted to play for Rudy ball
Seems like a perennial discussion on this board (including me) that say und should recruit a Qb in that years recruiting class. The staff has done a great job for the 2020 class ....but yet again no qb. Always seems like a last minute scramble. Hope a freund run offense will open recruits eyes.
I don't disagree with any of this. But you said that the staff does not prioritize QB recruiting. As if they made a conscious decision to prioritize other positions. That's a totally different issue than QBs not wanting to play in a run first system. Don't you think that it's possible that they prioritized recruiting QBs but had trouble getting commitments because of the style of offense?

For up coming seasons.....recruiting a qb should be priority #1. That hasn’t been the case
I'm interested to hear the evidence that the UND football staff did not prioritize QB recruiting.

Get the blackened wings at The Cay. Sauce on the side. For some reason they seem to be more juicy that way.
