  1. Do your own research, I think they have a list of available channels on their website. BYU, Northern Arizona and a few other schools have had their own channels that have shown up in various places.

Sorry if mine sounded snippy, didn't mean to. I did look and it looks like BYU and NAU are the two big schools on there, and NAU is a private channel. If UND decided to do this, i'm pretty sure it would have to be through Neulion, but it would be nice.

I've got a question that I hope someone can answer. Can I stream the webcast using my PS3? I live in Fargo, and can't get Midco where I live. If I need to go and get a laptop before the season starts, it'd be nice to know to do it now, rather than later. (I'm not very tech smart, sorry.)

Currently, yes, since their video player uses flash, but Jayson said that Neulion was in the testing stages of making their video player into HTML 5, so if/when they switch to that, i'm pretty sure you would be able to use that on your PS3 browser. I'm not 100% sure that PS3 supports HTML5, though.
  2. I was thinking about that myself. I just started using Roku. The quality is pretty good. Money might be a factor. Especially if they would want to go with HD quality. By the time they hired people and bought the needed equipment, it would probably take $1,000,000 or more to get started. The guaranteed $200,000 per year is nice to have in the Athletic Department budget. The number of people using the service, especially in this region, is probably still pretty small and it could limit the potential pool of available customers. It might be a nice additional service to go with something else right now. But it might be the direction of the future. Or maybe it's something that Midco would want to look at for their sports channel.

Go do some research on the subject. Come back and tell us how many other schools have Roku apps...
  3. And who would be the potential Maxmedia for North Dakota in this situation? If someone had wanted to put in a bid for something like that, I'm sure UND would have gladly considered that. It didn't happen. Midco put in a bid for their brand new sports channel. And WDAZ was willing to do something similar to what they had done before, except that was part of a partnership with UND and Midco. I doubt that Midco was interested in continuing that partnership if they were trying to get the package for themselves. There wasn't a good competing bid. Midco was the choice. And the NCHC contract with CBS Sports also is a part of the scene. Some of you just are never going to accept that this was the best option available for UND right now. If you don't like it maybe you can put together a different package and outbid Midco in 2017 when the contract is up. It will probably cost you about $1,000,000 in upfront costs and at least $200,000 per year in rights fees, so that gives you a target to work toward.

Have you guys looked at Max Media's broadcasts? Go to the Video on Demand section on watchbigsky.com, and go look up one of their games...they looked WDAZ quality. As far as North Dakota's version of Max Media, you are looking at it. Midco is the big one in this state, and they have pretty much made UND their new main school. They are broadcasting more UND games than any other school they cover, and they are actively trying to get on DISH an DirecTV.

  4. I don't know about you guys, but I got the slingbox setup at my mothers place in Grand Forks, so I now get all the games via slingbox to my pc, connected to my tv. The quality probably won't be true-high definition, probably akin to standard definition, but it beats the crappy webcast. Now if I can find a way to record on my pc I will be able to dvr the games as well...

Stinks to have to shell out the $180 for a slingbox, but I don't have to pay the (noticeably increased from $60) webcast fee of $80.

You are aware that Jayson has said multiple times that they upgraded their system and will be webcasting in HD all of midco's HD games this year.

Oh crap...I thought the webcasts were free...Better start paying attention...I like the Slingbox option though...

Nope :( All of their broadcasts on Big Sky TV are free though...

  5. On a scale of 1-10 how do you feel UND athletics are doing right now?

    1. Our new tv contract for hockey sucks. The big ten announced there contract and they aren't exclusively with the Big ten network like we are tied by our ball sack to the CBS network. They got espnu espnews, nbc sports, fox sports etc etc.

    [...]

    4. The volleyball team has a losing record. Atleast attendance is actually growing though.

    [...]

    6. We have no Minnesota or Wisconsin on the hockey schedule this year.

    [...]

    10. If mens ball doesn't have a good season, I expect at least a top 3, could be a long winter.

    [...]

    16. Did I mention I cant wait to have to watch UND hockey online instead of on TV?

    [...]

I'll touch on the ones that stuck out to me the most...

Starting with #1, I know there are certain aspects to this TV deal that suck, but the NCHC just can't compete with the sheer size of the Big Ten Conference. That conference is huge and comes with a huge reputation behind that built on football and basketball. It could be Big Ten Foosball for all we care, and ESPN i'm sure would still line up for a couple of broadcasts.

The other part is your phrasing, "...fox sports etc etc." That is a little misleading, it sounds like you are saying it is FOX Sports 1 carrying those games when you are really just talking about FOX Sports North carrying games, which is a huge difference between a national network and a regional network. FOX Sports North has carried the gophers for a long time.

As far as the NCHC TV contract goes, it isn't UND's TV contract, it is the NCHC's TV Contract, and we had one vote just like everyone else in the matter, but that doesn't mean it can't be changed, I just know it probably won't be this year.

UND Sports' TV situation has grown (sparkly Midco HD, the quality of UND's Big Sky TV broadcasts have gone up [that football game vs. Montana, the disaster it was, looked really good], and they are apparently broadcasting soccer now). At the same time the extremities (lack of Hockey on FOX College Sports) have been hurt, but they are still on there for other sports....so that is something.

#4, It's a little soon to start casting shadows about volleyball, isn't it? I mean they aren't even a quarter way done with the season...I mean, they started the season off with 3 straight tournaments and just came out of their latest one winning the whole thing. So let's hold off on that, at least until they are half way through their schedule.

#6, i know, may be a little upsetting for this year, but you have to realize that it's not like it is going to be this way forever. Minnesota and Wisconsin will appear on the schedules again, don't worry.

#10 You are saying this like they didn't have a good season last year, they were third in the conference behind two teams that nearly went undefeated in conference play. So, settle down.

#16 Jayson has said on here before that all the hockey games that midco broadcasts in HD will also be online in HD, along with the ability to watch games on your mobile devices. Also, it literally takes two seconds to hook your computer up to your TV if you have a laptop that was designed in the past 4-5 years. So, it will be nice to watch UND on my nice big 55" screen all the way in Bismarck.

While I do think many of your concerns are valid, there are some, like these, that I view as just a knee-jerk reaction to some things that happen and happen to many schools.

  6. *While it does appear to be a nice idea in theory, if I can be completely frank here, there is no way this would fly with a fan base as demanding (and I use the word in the most complimentary way) as ours. Having seen so much vitriolic criticism from some fans over the years of professionally-run broadcasts (Midco, FOX Sports North, CBS, NBC, ESPN, etc.), I find it hard to believe our hockey viewership would tolerate some of the hiccups that often come with a student-run broadcast and the production quality. You would demand better, and rightfully

Originaly that is all Ralph expected was a two camera student production of the hockey to be uplinked nationwide for all Allumni. That is why the TV control room was built into the REA with two cameras. You seem to assume that everyone who is a UND hockey fan or Allumni can afford cable, or other video sources. That is a false idea. There are some Allumni that for reasons beyond their control are not able to spend 30, 40 50 dollars or more a month for cable.. Even the annual fee for the webcast may mean a choice between not filling a months worth of prepscriptions during the year or a few less meals. That is all based on if they happen to live somewhere that Midco provides services. That is what is wrong with the current system. If you have, you get. If you are struggling, your screwed. Maybe the University should direct funds to a foundation that helps those UND Allumni or hockey fans on hardtimes by paying the fee Midco and/or Neulion expect. A new charity could be born!

And here I thought they put a production control room in the Ralph for that big thing hanging over the ice...

  7. 3000 posts! So this is how MafiaMan pads his stats... :)

Haha, I was wondering where it was going...i hoped on the page when it just said, "Me, I'm getting close..." and I was a bit confused.

  8. Please tell me where I can get an FTA system for $20 and an HD FTA system for $30 because if you're paying more than $8 for a ten foot HDMI cable you're getting ripped off.

Truth. Amazon is a wealth of $8.00 HDMI cables.

  9. A alternative option to the webcast is to consider investing in a Slingbox. There are some stipulations before it is a viable option. Namely, you need to place the Slingbox in someone's home who gets Midcontinent cable. In my case, it's my parents' house(I'm a DirecTV subscriber). Secondly, you need to make sure they have a high enough internet upload rate so that the HD channel quality won't get degraded. Recommended would be an upload/download speed of 1.5 Mbps or higher.

You'd also have to be sure to connect the Slingbox to a DVR or HD Receiver that isn't frequently used otherwise you'd be battling for control of said device. Otherwise, could place a dedicated DVR/HD Receiver in their house and simply pay an annual(or monthly) fee for the receiver lease.

Set-up is really simple as well. Either way, I've been using a Slingbox for over a year now and I get the HD channels in crystal clear quality. The initial investment is a bit steep but I think in the long run is worth it.

This would not be a good option. Slingbox is not meant to work this way, and would cause a mess of things on Slingbox's end.

A lot of people are confused by how this all goes down. UND, like a lot of colleges, uses Neulion and a quick look on Neulion's website shows that besides colleges, Neulion also does video services for the NHL, NFL, and many more. I emailed Neulion about how their system works for colleges like us. Apparently, UND sends it to Neulion and then the game is distributed over their servers down to the customers, So UND only has to worry about one person while all the customers are not accessing UND for the stream, but Neulion, so UND is the wrong person to be mad at when it comes to a customer's stream not working.

Also, People are also getting mad at only 6 games being on national television instead of 22...well, here's the deal...

First off, Fox College Sports is not a national channel, its a semi-national channel that is closer to being a regional channel like Fox Sports North is, so technically they aren't national games when being broadcast.

Secondly, FCS doesn't have an HD channel, only SD. So, if people want games back on FCS, they will have to take a downgrade in quality along with it.

Finally, both CBSSN and MidcoSN will be broadcasting all of their games in FULL HD this year, and while the home games that CBSSN does will not be webcast, it sounds like what Jayson is saying that UND got the right equipment this year to webcast all of the MidcoSN games in HD as well.

So, through all of this, I would rather have this setup than last year. I know people generally don't like change, and for most, people will have to change how they get their games. I like it though, because I like my games in HD.
