  1. They just have to write a Roku app.  Just like any other mobile app for android or iOS.

i just wish I could get the Watch BigSky app for iPhone or iPad to work.  Neither of them seem to actually be functional.

The app became no longer functional when AmericaOne got bought by Eversport because of how they do things. They are still in the process of building a new app, but you can just visit watchbigsky.com (or eversport.tv/big-sky) on your iPad or iPhone's web browser and watch them through that. That is how I have been doing it at least when I have had to use my phone.

  2. So, evidently the Oct. 3 exhibition game will not be televised (as it had been previous years) because MIDCO is televising the NDSU vs. SDSU FB game.......damn.

I'm pretty sure they will stick the exhibition game on one of the two alternate channels that MidcoSN has.

  3. I see that MIDCO announced the telecast schedules of UND FB, MBB, WBB, and VB. I know that usually all home men's hockey games are televised, but there has been variations. When will the finalized schedule for both men's and women's hockey be announced?

Most likely after CBSSN announces their schedule. Its somewhat of a big man goes first situation...national goes first, regional second, third-tier third. For example, now that we have the midco schedule for vb, mbb, and wbb, i'm sure the announcement for the fox sports north games isn't far behind.

  4. Every reply in this post so far:axJmn.gif

Its all about poking fun at the fact they apparently scheduled it for 20202 according to the article title instead of 2020...hence the thread name also being named "20202 season"

  5. Just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the nchc subscription video quality? Is it hd quality and does it stream well.

Living in Winnipeg this is likely the only way I can view UND hockey

Their quality maxes out at HD, its variable depending on your internet connection speed, so if your internet is slow or becomes slow, the quality will drop so the stream can continue and (supposedly) not stop. It seemed like most of the people on this board were okay with what NCHC.tv delivered last season. Production quality can vary on away games, but all of UND's home games are produced by the regional sports network, MidcoSN, and as far as production goes, they are one of the best, if not the best in the conference, IMO.

  6. One good way to downsize Phase 2 would be to get himself and the rest of the AD out of there. Why they need to move into that facility is beyond me.

I remember seeing a diagram for phase two once (I don't remember where), but it only had a small handful of offices and things like a study center and locker rooms for the student athletes. Beyond those locker rooms and the such, i'm pretty sure the only offices going in there would be for compliance and academic services (and Faison I would assume). Those are only people who work with the student athletes directly, which should make it easier for the student athletes as it is poised to become a major hub for them with the locker rooms and study center. That diagram doesn't have nearly the number of offices to fit the entire athletic department, I would guess everyone else would stay where they are at the hyslop.

  7. I have been surprised at the number of non-conference games shown on NCHC.tv so far where the home team is the non-NCHC team. The most recent were last week's UNO at Cornell games - both were available. When I heard Midco picked up Saturday's game, I was hopeful, but I guess I'll have to watch via alternative methods.

Well, Cornell is part of the Ivy League Digital Network which is their version of NCHC.tv, and both are powered by Neulion. That is probably behind why the Cornell game was on there. I'm sure we will see it throughout the year with non-conference opponents whose online video is hosted by Neulion. With the Wisconsin game, BTN2go is also hosted by Neulion but the B10 has so many content restrictions wrapped around it, that it looks like the only way to watch it otherwise would be on BTN2go and subscribe.

  8. NHL Gamecenter Live is powered and designed by Neulion so there is nothing wrong with Neulion, any problems of buffering or camera-work or clarity come from the individual schools, not Neulion.

That isn't entirely true. Buffering problems can be caused by Neulion quite often. People tend not to experience a whole lot of trouble with streaming NHL gamecenter because Neulion allocates those games tons of their bandwidth to use.

Smaller colleges, though, can be caught with streaming issues when they are bombarded with an unusually high number of viewers, like when a team shares their stream with UND and a large number of hockey fans are logging on. Neulion, a lot of times, doesn't anticipate such a high number of viewers and they don't have enough resources allocated for that game which can leave a lot of people out in the cold.

For schools like UND, which can have a high number of viewers on the webcast, they usually try to give them enough resources in terms of bandwidth to try to limit the number of people who have buffering issues, especially when they are giving them an HD signal. With the issues earlier in the year, i'm sure this was a fluid process on how much bandwidth to give UND because of the uncertainty of how many viewers were going to have to come over with the elimination of FOX College Sports as an option.

While clarity can be an issue with the signal the school is sending Neulion (there are schools out there still not broadcasting in HD), buffering is usually not caused by the schools. Schools send one connection to Neulion, and then Neulion takes that signal and distributes it over the school's website. The signal is usually really good going from the school to Neulion (at least for UND). Any of the full or condensed hockey games that are on-demand along with highlights are usually made by Neulion from the signal they were getting from the school. In the end, buffering can usually be narrowed down to two things, either the viewer's connection is bad, or there is a issue with Neulion.

  9. The NCHC feed worked a bit better for me than the neulion feed on undsports has. That's not saying much. Neulion has to go, it's so much worse than americaone feeds as well as almost all others.

Both feeds were HD. NCHC servers just worked better than neulions where I'm located.

Actually, only one of the feeds was true HD. Both SD (UNDSports.com/NCHChockey.com) and HD (UNDSports.com) feeds were from UNDSports.com. NCHC only embedded the player from UNDSports.com, just like when you see YouTube videos on other websites. I checked out both feeds this weekend, and both of them looked pretty good.

  10. I'm just not aware of any TV coverage, though I could be wrong. I don't think any of the women's tourney games were televised last year either.

ROOT Sports is really shafting the Big Sky conference. Their deal called for them to televise "up to 12 men's basketball games", and they've only done 1 or 2 each of the last two seasons and that was only because the Big Sky team was playing a WCC or MWC or WAC team on that night.

Before the Big Sky's deal with ROOT, the championship game for the women was on Altitude, and the men's semis were also on Altitude. The men's title game this year is on ESPNU.

Don't have any idea if Midco is in play for any of the women's games or not, probably unlikely.

I don't think they are. Midco will have the HD truck back in GF next weekend, but, I would assume that they are putting all their eggs in the NCHC playoff coverage basket. I think it's going to be WatchBigSky.com only.

  11. you are a Grade A DICK! The guy was broadcasting his 2nd live game of the day (UND-NDSU WBB 3 hours earlier) both of which involve MANY hours of prep beforehand and you nag a brainfreeze he had after a nutbuster of a live broadcast schedule. How about you post your pic online so we can all judge you based on your appearance or would you just rather live in your parents basement rent free and feel good about yourself demanding things anonymously on a stupid internet forum??

I agree...this site has become a bunch of mean assholes...

  12. First off the atmosphere will be great. In 2009 when USA played Russia the place was rocking!! Second, I'm hoping they add temporary bleachers in the north and south end that might add 500 seats...maybe. I'm hoping that there is some priority for Force Season ticket holders. Probably not, but you never know!

I'm pretty sure when the NCAA hosts a regional in an arena, the arena gives up all seats to the NCAA, including ones held by season ticket holders.

  13. Smoke Blower the Cat doesnt count the Big 10 Network :)

It doesn't seem like it, but the Big Ten Network is actually a regional network. It is only available in the regions in where there is a Big Ten team....the downside, there are so many teams that spread a great distance, that it actually covers a good amount of ground, it is the reason it covers 50+ million people.

  14. i'm not sure...just saying that non hockey programs kind of fend for themselves! rea gets real "banners" for member schools but besc get fathead banners for member schools...

I don't think I have seen someone so bitter about something so miniscule. I was at the women's basketball exhibition game on Saturday and they looked really nice. They also have the current Big Sky logo, something I also saw you were angry the floor didn't have. Probably because they haven't redone the floor yet. Something, it seems like, the Ralph only does it every two years it seems.

  15. One of my friends who works for their in-house crew said their normal replay system was broken yesterday and had to do them using their back-up system that is kind of old and outdated that takes nearly 3-4 times longer to use.

  16. I don't believe the app needs to support it. Any video you are viewing on your iPhone or iPad can be viewed on Apple TV as long as it uses the QuickTime codec or at least I think that's how it works. And it doesn't really mirror it but instead pushes the video feed to the apple TV display.

You should be able to airplay it to your TV. I have airplayed on-demand videos from the UND Sports app, and it worked just fine.

  17. Does Neulion pay UND for the rights to stream UND athletics, or does UND pay Neulion for their services. My guess is that UND pays Neulion, possibly to include developing apps. The money comes from the fees paid by customers. But the party that pays would be the one that controls where the content is delivered.

I would think it is UND paying Neulion since the Neulion made the UND Sports App, and Neulion provides server space for streaming games. I would also think that both Neulion and UND share in the fees paid by people on UND Insider, with Neulion, in return, providing somewhat of a discount.

That last sentence is purely speculation, but the first one is based a little more in fact.

  18. It looks like the originator, either UND or Midco, would have to set up the applications. Neulion can host them, but I don't think they provide the apps. So I don't think that they are available right now, although Jayson has said that they are working on the app for mobile devices.

If you look, the current UND Sports App for iPhone and Android devices is made by Neulion, they seem to have the online streaming rights to UND. Jayson also said that the UND Sports apps for iPhone and Android will stream video of all of the men's hockey games done by Midco this year.

And I obviously disagree - when you can find the things I did on their streaming service provider's website, people are going to ask questions and wonder if those options are available and if not, why? It's better to be in front of it than to have people begin to speculate wildly, which never does anyone any good. It's surprising how much bad news people will accept when time is taken to fully explain the situation - at least that has been my experience. There will always be some that are just totally unreasonable and will never be satisfied regardless of the effort taken or the facts, but those people just have to be written off.

If you look closer, those are for some of their bigger clients....like the NHL, NFL, NBA, and UFC. Those are literally all the sports shown on all the "platforms" on that page, not one thing below a professional sports level was shown on that page.

  19. Anybody else notice that Montana's home game today against Oklahoma Panhandle was available on BigSky TV "for a small fee."?

Methinks that the Big Sky and America One are testing the waters for subscription service in the future.

Something inside me thinks this wasn't broadcasted on the normal big sky side of things...it may have been on AmericaOne, but remember that AmericaOne is a pay-for-use service. The Big Sky conference takes care of this fee for us. They may of been on something different other than AmericaOne's WatchBigSky channel or, who knows, you may be right. This is me just pulling out a world map and speculating WILDLY!

  20. Cable companies are very worried about the changes coming in viewing habits. I've read that viewers under 30 are trending toward using mobile devices and online viewing rather than paying for cable. Even older demographics like myself have started moving in that direction. Cable companies are looking at options like ala carte menus of channels, or allowing customers to buy only the channels they want instead of making everyone pay for set packages. Smart people running leagues, teams, or schools will look at all of the potential options and try new things like Roku. The difficult thing may be making multiple options work together for the broadest exposure.

I agree with all of this. The only speed bumps I can see are:

    1. Dreaded TV Contract and licensing fees. It all seems like this would be a great thing to do on the surface, and don't get me wrong, it would be an amazing thing to do, but there are many moving parts below the surface that make it hard to do that. This is most likely the reason cable companies have been so hesitant to move to a ala carte style service, but, I'm with ya, it is something I would really love to see happen.

    2. (and this one is more directed toward what UND can do) UND has been working at getting games on mobile devices for people. Jayson said that this year hockey games will be available for streaming on all apple and android mobile devices on the UND Sports app, which is huge for UND, especially since they are webcasting them in HD as well.

As far as streaming through other services, that is where we go back to #1. We don't know what kind of licensing deals UND has with Midco or Neulion or who ever else, but if UND ever did create an app for Roku or any other streaming service, it would most likely have to go through Neulion like they did for the iPhone and android apps. If everything goes well this year with streaming, I wouldn't see it being an issue for them wanting to expand and try new things.
