I don't think it's a terrible idea teams will play ACHA teams. Lets these schools see what it takes to move up.

The reason is, for the most part, is there isn't many holiday tournaments anymore. So, teams use the break to play an exhibition game but D1 teams don't want to play Canadian teams anymore, so they schedule ACHA D1 teams. Not sure they can play an exhibition game against a NCAA D1 team mid-season like they can at the start of the season.
