  1. If he does choose to leave the likely number one reason is bolded within your post. There are many new Sioux fans who need to get a life.

Also, if Kristo leaves it's not because he stopped attending classes. You put the cart in front of the horse. If Kristo has stopped attending classes, it's because he's already decided to leave.

  2. If he does choose to leave the likely number one reason is bolded within your post. There are many new Sioux fans who need to get a life.

I'm not sure what you mean by this comment. All I was saying is that someone started a rumor that Kristo was no longer attending classes, and I don't think that's verifiable at this point. Also, if the "new Sioux fan" line was directed at me, I'd think before you post next time. Just because I've recently joined this forum doesn't mean I'm a "new fan." Whatever the h*ll that means.

  3. Need an NHL draft guru here: If Gregoire stays four full years and isn't signed by August 1, 2012 doesn't he become a free agent?

If so, that'd be one way out of the dreadful NYI system.

If I recall correctly, I remember Schlossman saying something similar. I believe someone made a comment that if Gregoire stayed for his senior year that he'd become a FA, but Schlossman indicated that he would have to go unsigned until a certain date. I believe that date was August 1.

  4. Can someone please explain the rationale for Kristo leaving early? I think he needs at least another year. Thoughts?

I think the biggest factor is that Kristo is currently Montreal's number-one rated prospect. We all know that Kristo would likely be better served playing another season at the college level rather than spending what is likely to be a year in the AHL. There is a rumor on this thread that Kristo has stopped attending classes, but we don't know that. So what we do know is that he's a valued commodity of the Canadiens, and I think he's playing at a level high enough to justify leaving.

Perhaps Hakstol can convince him to stay if he's thinking otherwise.

  5. Do you guys see Forbort as a potential flight risk? At first glance you may say no, but we thought the same thing about Nick Leddy.

I see Kristo staying, much to my dismay.

I don't see Forbort leaving, but that's just my opinion.

Kristo will be a 40+ point guy next year if he stays, so whether you like him or not, he'll be one of our top scorers.

Hey, no problem. I don't believe in karma, but I do believe in really good hockey teams.

    GO SIOUX!

  7. My take on this is pretty simple. The Sioux are just one of those dominant teams that will not be denied a championship. The team's reaction, or lack of, to winning the MacNaughton, Broadmoor, and Regional Championships reminded me of what all great teams in any sport seem to have: a confident expectation that they will win. The national championship is a team goal which no one has discussed publicly, but their focus is evident. I think Michigan might have the "happy to be there" attitude. They can play the underdog card all they want, but the team isn't looking past them. I'm just not worried.

Oh, and Hunwick has given up five and four goals in separate games against Western Michigan in the last six weeks. That was on a combined 38 shots.

  8. I was listening in my car so I missed the controversial part also. I was hoping someone here would post what was dumped.

I was actually listening online, heard that guy call in, and then I must have literally stopped listening right before those comments.

Not to beat a dead horse, but I'd like to know what was said just in order to make my own judgment.

  9. Nothing was dumped, PA wanted content dumped but it was too late.

DHG is a good guy, he just likes to stir the pot with opposing fan bases. He's ads big of a hockey fan as you'll ever meet.

Okay, but why did PA say he dumped a comment made by DHG twice, then explicitly told Joe Nelson not to include said comment in the podcast? I just listened to the podcast, so I'm assuming something that he said was left out.

  10. I could would put my life on it that Paul had no idea that this would have been said. I used to work at KFAN back in the PA and Dubay days. Paul was getting angry about the comments after they were said and I could tell it was bothering him. He knows that GF and Duluth both have Fan radio stations so he would not alienate one over the other. We all know how to have fun, but that crossed the line and Paul new it and that is why he dumped it for the Twin Cities market, but it didn't in GF or in my case Fargo. Please don't put this on Paul, put it on this D Bag in Duluth.

Agreed. Like I said, PA called his initial comment "diseased." PA even said he was pissed off about it.

But care to share what he said that got dumped?

  11. Just listened to that portion of the podcast.

First of all, he thinks UMD will have the upper hand over UND in a potential title match up because there will be "neutral" refs instead of WCHA refs, and he likes their power play. Uh, whatever that means.

Then Ryan Cardinal said UND has the top power play in the WCHA, and "Drunk Hockey Guy" said the difference is that everyone on their power play unit has two feet and ten toes.

Credit to PA for calling him out. I didn't hear it live, so I don't know what else he said, but PA said that he "dumped" a comment that DHG repeated twice. He said it was the first time since he's been on the radio that he's dumped someone's comment who wasn't cursing. Then he told his producer to not include those comments in the podcast. Cardinal was pretty neutral on it.

Anyone know what this guy said live?

  12. There is only one knock on Hakstol...and that is the lack of a national championship. That's it. Period.

I think, for some, it's hard to see some of the team's Hakstol has fielded not win a title. I am not one of them. It's hard enough to even get to the Frozen Four, even with a stacked team. To win it is a whole 'nother challenge. The coach can only do so much. He can't change bad bounces and he can't go and play goalie if the team's goaltender flopped in the Frozen Four. He can't go score a game-winning goal, and can't deliver a momentum shifting check.

    This speaks for itself:

5 Frozen Fours in 7 seasons

    2 MacNaughton Cups

    3 Broadmoor Trophy's

A team that gave you confidence to win it all come playoff time, every single season

Has produced top-notch talent...who have been greatly successful both on and off the ice....he turns boys into men basically

He doesn't take no for an answer

He epitomizes the character and love of the Sioux tradition, and backs it up strongly.

The team has seen growth in the fanbase and he has built excitement in a program where some thought it has reached its peak. The stands are always full, and look what has happened when the team plays in places like St Paul for the Final Five...it's jam-packed with Sioux fans. Some of this may seem unrelated to the head coach, but in reality, much if it is on his shoulders, whether it's good or bad. For us, we've seen some of the greatest times in Sioux hockey history...now it's time to win a national championship.

I wouldn't trade Hakstol for anyone.

Yes, some more things I was thinking as well. He obviously didn't create the tradition of excellence that surrounds Sioux hockey, but he has done an unbelievable job at continuing it and making it better. I've also come to realize how hard it is to win a national championship, especially in hockey given how fluky it can be. That is the primary reason I don't get worked up about the fact that he hasn't won one yet. Am I devastated every year that ends with a loss? Absolutely. But I know that one is coming and very soon!

  13. ^You really have to know Gino to fully appreciate him. He isn't for everyone.

I've known him since the 70s and he's always been very nice to me.

I was actually wondering why lomackman didn't like Hasktol, not Gino. I always hear fans say that they don't like him, but they don't really offer any valid reasons. That's fine if you don't like the guy, but it would be nice to hear why that is.

Perhaps the unwarranted bashing will subside once Hak and the Sioux bag #8 next weekend.

  14. Buy this logic, the Minnesota Vikings are one of the best NFL teams of all times - appeared in 4 Super Bowls, numerous playoff appearances, high winning percentage.

Not trying to bash Hak, but you have to win one to be great

Really? Is it so impossible to actually stay on topic in a thread?

Did I say "Hakstol is the greatest coach of all time?" Nope, sure didn't. The question is whether there's any coach you'd rather have at this point given Hakstol's success thus far with the program. The numbers I pointed out show that Hakstol has had great success regardless of whether he's won a national championship. He's obviously a great coach (the "if you don't win a championship you can't be considered great argument" is bogus), so would you replace him?

And by your logic Trent Dilfer is a better quarterback than Dan Marino.

  15. Blais would be the only other coach but what would that really change? Personally I may not like Hak but I do respect his coaching abilities. Who is/was a better coach Hak or Gino? I will go with Hak anyday since Gino's success was more of having great assistants than his own ability. When Blais left the first time the program went down hill after that until he came back.

Any reason why you don't like him? I hear that from fans quite often, but don't ever really get an explanation. I'm just wondering what people don't like about him. Is he not personable enough, or what?

  16. I understand the point of the post; I was just presenting a counter-argument. For the record, I agree with you; I would take Hak over any coach in the nation.

Fair enough. I didn't feel the need to list the fact that he has zero national championships as I assume anyone knows that. I think that WILL change next weekend.

  17. The obvious thing that was ignored is the most important stat: national championships. Lets hope that all changes in 10 days

Obviously national championships trump all, but you missed the point of the post. Considering only five coaches have won national championships during Hakstol's tenure, I could rank him sixth along with the other 52 head coaches.

  18. Since Dave Hakstol has been nominated yet again for the Spencer Penrose Award, I wanted to put some of his accomplishments into perspective. Despite the frequent bashing he receives from some fans (mostly unfounded), Hakstol has been one of the best coaches in Division I since he took over at UND in 2004. Here is what he's done up through this season with rank among D1 coaches in parentheses:

    Wins

  19. i agree with genoway (2nd team at best) in the lineup the team has to sit around and watch him dance with the puck up the ice. anyone notice the play of the sioux when they moved the puck up the ice as a team the past 10 games and how effective the pony line is without this type of play. was disappointing to see and im afraid we are going to see more of it. not a positive sign. I agree that blood has really turned his game around and playing a bit smarter and not always trying to make the big hit and being out of position. lapoint is also solid once again would like to see him on the pk more

Too much is made of Genoway's tendency to carry the puck up the ice and get involved in the offensive zone. He's an offensive defenseman, so I don't understand the issue. You can't expect to be that successful with six stay at home d-men on the ice at all times. Yes, the Sioux have better defensive defenseman than Genoway, but Chay's overall game at the blue line is very, very good. He makes plays, and I don't think he makes nearly the amount of mistakes in the defensive zone that people think he does.

  20. I just haven't said much because what people are saying is right and it's hard to add much to it.

Whelan's calculator works great and can be a lot of fun to play around with. However, you do need to remember that you're punching in the outcomes of 63 remaining games (the number could grow if any of the WCHA play-ins split). That leaves a minimum of something like 9,223,372 trillion possible outcomes, so there are probably quite a few you'll miss.

Of course, a lot of those don't matter much, and it's easy to look at a team like UND's PWR and figure out everything that could flip. Minnesota, however, has at least a dozen comparisons that could easily flip; not to mention the added impact of the TUC-cliff uncertainty given their .4600 record vs. TUCs. Minnesota is firmly on the bubble, we should know a lot more about exactly what they need to do after this weekend.

    Awesome. Thanks for the clarification.
