  1. Many UDFA are underclassman. Usually older guys that matured later.

You're correct. Went back to last year's list, and there are a slew of juniors. I'm hard pressed to find a sophomore who's made the jump as an UDFA though. Even guys like DeKeyser and Sustr were juniors.

I'd be curious if there have been any recent sophomore undrafted signees. Anyone know of any?

  2. I'd add Stecher to that list of possible flight risks, though I wouldn't be surprised to see him wear a letter if he does stay.

I disagree being Stecher's an UDFA. I can't recall much precedence for an early departure free agent, but maybe I'm wrong. Also not saying he's not opening some eyes, but I think NHL teams are going to let him play out his time here.

  3. Not quite as good as this year's crop, but in 2008-2009, Mike Cichy led the USHL in goals, Michael Forney was a top 15 guy, and Danny Kristo was a top 20ish guy.

Cichy and Forney combined for a total of 5 goals in their combined 67 games for the Sioux.

    Kristo turned out okay :)

Also interesting, USHL Goal Leaders: (School - Freshman Stats in Parenthesis)

    2002-2003: Ryan Potulney (MN - 6-8-14)

    2003-2004: Matthew Ford (WI - 5-5-10) / Mike Erickson (WM - 13-11-24)*

    2004-2005: Andrew Carroll (UMD - 13-10-23)

    2005-2006: Matt Schepke (MSU - 3-2-5)**

    2006-2007: Jacob Cepis (BGSU - 15-16-31)

    2007-2008: Jason Gregoire (UND - 12-17-29)

    2008-2009: Mike Cichy (UND - 2-2-4) / Andy Taranto (AK - 18-24-42)

    2009-2010: Matt White (UNO - 14-11-25) / Tyler Barnes (WI - 5-12-17) / Anders Lee (ND - 24-20-44)

    2010-2011: Danill Tarasov (DNP)

    2011-2012: Kevin Roy (NE - 17-17-34)

    2012-2013: Taylor Cammarata (MN - 10-17-27)

2013-2014: Matt Iacopelli (Still in USHL - committed to WM)

*Erickson started out at Minnesota, then went back to USHL and transferred to Western.  Those stats represent his Junior Season, or first year at Western.

** Schepke started out at Michigan Tech, then went back to USHL and transferred to Michigan State.  Those stats represent his Sophomore Season, or first year at Michigan State.

And Cepis, as we all remember, transferred to Minnesota where he became a national diving champion.

I decided to take a quick look at the draft status of each of the players on that list. Here it is:

    Potulny - 3rd (round)

    Ford - 8th

    Erickson - 3rd

    Carroll - undrafted

    Schepke - undrafted

    Cepis - undrafted

    Gregoire - 3rd

    Cichy - 7th

    Taranto - undrafted

    White - undrafted

    Barnes - undrafted

    Lee - 6th

    Tarasov - undrafted

    Roy - 4th

    Cammarata - 3rd

    Iacopelli - 3rd

So we have Brock Boeser, this year's goal leader, a projected first round pick in this summer's NHL draft. This might not mean anything as draft position doesn't necessarily correlate to college success, but I think he's probably the most talented player on that list with the best chance to make the biggest impact in his first year. I'll predict a 15-15-30 season. Not earth shattering but a very good first year.

It would be interesting to look at the top five or top 10 goal scorers from each year for comparison. Maybe for another day.

As for expectations, I expect business as usual. I believe we'll be top-3 in the NCHC, a 1 or 2-seed in the national tourney, and I think we'll be in Tampa this time next year.

  4. At this point I'd be happy with one title game appearance the last ten years or maybe a lead in a frozen four the last 7 years.

Teams you may be interested in:

    Denver

    Michigan State

    Notre Dame

    Miami

    Duluth

    Yale

    Quinnipiac

    Union

    Minnesota

    Ferris State

    Michigan

    Good luck to you.

  5. The standards have gotten low around here. Top 3 program in the country with the best arena in the land and simply making the NCAA tournament and being a regular season 'powerhouse' is enough these days to satisfy the fan base. Based on the rosters that each team has in the WCHA, it would be damn near impossible for UND to finish outside of the Top 6 every year in the league. They have 14 NHL draft picks. So they are going to get home ice pretty much every year, which they have.

When a program is the bigtime, upper echelon program in its division, it usually wins a NC title every so often. Look at every other sport (BB - Duke, UNC, Kentucky....FB - Alabama, Texas, Florida, USC). And when those teams or other programs near their level don't win a national championship over a prolonged period: their coach is fired or run out or changes are made (see UCLA basketball, Florida State football).

I guess I don't understand the complacency year after year when it comes to this program. There are multiple people pissed off on this board and want things shook up but there are more that love the way its going and are happy with the results. Losing in the NCAA tourney to teams that are not as good as you, year after year, is a bit of an issue IMO.

I will add that I have no idea who a better coach would be. My point is simply from the surface, more pointed to how the fan base is reacting (or not reacting) to the continuous losses in the NCAA tournament.

I don't think fans are complacent; they're grounded and realistic and don't believe that not winning a national championship in nine years is grounds for firing. I'm not going to go through Hak's accomplishment's, because it has been done ad nauseam, but they're slightly more than just making the tournament every year (which is much more difficult than seemingly every Fire Hak charlatan thinks).

Also, please don't compare other college sports to hockey, because they simply don't correlate. There are a number of options for hockey other than college, and hockey recruiting is more competitive than ever and probably more so than any other major college sport. Basketball recruits have only one viable avenue to pursue, especially if they want to play professionally, and that's college basketball. There is no Canadian league, and a player cannot jump directly to the NBA from high school. Unless you're Brandon Jennings and go play in Europe for a season before entering the draft, you're going to college. On that reason alone there's a larger talent pool for college basketball. Not to mention basketball if more popular. Sure there are about 300 more teams, but there are a small fraction of elite programs even though recruiting becomes increasingly competitive every year. You know what else? You can win a national championship in basketball with three, four, or five stud freshman. That would never happen in college hockey. The development tracks for these players are in different solar systems, which is why 18-21 year old kids have been playing and excelling in the NBA for years, and why very few hockey players in that age group even see minimal ice time in the NHL. In college football there are about 120 D-1 programs, and probably about 10-15 who can get any player they want. I guess what I'm trying to say is that there are several options for hockey players, whereas there is really only the college path for football and basketball. That dilution of available talent coupled with the competitiveness of recruiting make it much more complicated than simply being North Dakota and having a nice arena.

And just wanting to "shake things up" simply because, well, they just should be shaken up, is not a stable argument.

  6. Stecher will come in before Poolman. The two guarantees to come in next year (defenseman with no Junior eligibility left) are Stecher and LaDue, everyone else is still at least somewhat of a question mark.

Oh, I was not aware of their junior eligibility. Thanks.

I really like the D-corps next year, especially if Forbort stays (which I believe he will). If they can mesh a little more with Berry's style, I think they will be a very good unit.

  7. My stab at what the lines could look like for 2013-14, based on who I think will be coming in and who will return:

    LW - C - RW

    1) Caggiula - Grimaldi - Parks

    2) Tambellini - Ma. MacMillan - Murphy

    3) O' Donnell - Johnson - St. Clair

    4) Senkbeil - Pattyn - Gaarder

    Chyzyk, Rodwell, Mi. MacMillan, Sanderson

    LD - RD

    1) Simpson - LaDue

    2) Mattson - Schmaltz

    3) Thompson - Stecher

    Panzarella

    G

    1) Gothberg

    2) Saunders

    3) ?

I can't see Forbort leaving, but I suppose it's always a possibility. I'm including him until a final decision is made. I also think Tambellini will play center, at least to start anyway.

    1st Line: Ma. MacMillan-Grimaldi-Parks

    2nd Line: Mi. MacMillan-Tambellini-Caggiula

    3rd Line: St. Clair-Johnson-O'Donnell

    4th Line: Gaarder-Pattyn-Rodwell

    Extra: Chyzyk, Senkbeil, Sanderson, Murphy

    D1: Forbort-Schmaltz

    D2: Simpson-LaDue

    D3: Poolman-Mattson

    Extra: Panzarella

    Goalies: Gothberg, Saunders

  8. Making the NCAA field isn't that difficult to do. More than 1/4 of the college teams make it as there are less than 60 schools playing hockey.

The recruiting tool called Englestad Arena should get you the players to get that done. Then it is time to have a coach that wants to win games.

I get tired or hearing him say, "we learned from this", when they lose a game. Winning is important, if it wasn't why do they keep score.

Yeah, I bet Hak hates winning.

  9. That is hilarious. Rocco will never play in the NHL. Knight? Never. Kristo? Long shot.

    Who invited the troll?

I saw something recently that showed Grimaldi as only the sixth or seventh UND freshman EVER to have 35+ points. I'd rather have a guy who's hitting posts than someone who is shooting high and wide. Means he's close. It will all balance out.

  10. 17 forwards ... yeah, one isn't eligible until January, but 17?

I suspect a low playing time guy, or a guy who isn't developing may be going elsewhere.

I've wondered about potential transfers as well. Perhaps a guy like Dickin would leave, because he really can't be looking at a ton of playing time next season.

On the other hand, we do have three forwards (Rodwell, O'Donnell, Grimaldi) coming off of season-ending surgeries, so with the possibility that one of them has a setback, maybe we're just keen on loading up on forwards so this year's situation does not repeat itself.

  11. Goalies (3): Maris (Sr), Saunders (Jr), Gothberg (Fr)

Forwards (16): Rowney (Sr), Kristo (Sr), Knight (Sr), Rodwell (Jr), Mitch MacMillan (Jr), Dickin (Jr), Gaarder (So), Mark MacMillan (So), O'Donnell (So), Parks (So), Pattyn (So), Grimaldi (Fr), St. Clair (Fr), Chyzyk (Fr), Koules (Fr), Sanderson (Fr)

Defense (8): MacWilliam (Sr), Gleason (Sr), Simpson (Jr), Forbort (Jr), Mattson (So), Panzarella (So), Senkbeil (So), Schmaltz (Fr)

    Parks-Knight-Kristo

    MacMillan-Grimaldi-O'Donnell

    Chyzyk-Rowney-Rodwell

    Pattyn-Gaarder/Koules-St. Clair

    Extras: Mitch MacMillan, Dickin, Sanderson

    Forbort-Schmaltz

    MacWilliam-Mattson

    Simpson-Gleason

    Extras: Panzarella, Senkbeil

    Saunders

    Gothberg

    Maris

Forgot Caggiula. Maybe Kristo's decision changes things, but as of yesterday he planned on coming this fall.

  12. Portland is known for being the fast track to the NHL. Even though I think the OHL is better.

Just check out their list of ex-players: http://winterhawks.com/page/alumni

Wherever Mr. Jones goes I'd expect he'd play there for one season, get drafted in 2013, and then play in the AHL/NHL the fall of 2013.

It would have been great to see him in Grand Forks and it's not completely ruled out but his trade to Portland makes the odds of him coming much worse.

I only counted 10 current players on that list, and it's not exactly a Who's Who of the NHL.

  13. Is he healthy now? Is he up with the big club?

He actually hasn't been up all year. He's played 37 games for St. John's this year, but he missed about six weeks from November to mid-December, and then was out about another month until early March. It seems the injuries have been a setback for him, so I just wonder if he would have seen some time with the Jets if that wasn't the case.

  14. There are many "Schroeder" examples.

And there are the Hextalls and Gregoires that come back after leaving and tell teammates to stay.

But you still see early departures that just make you shake your head.

Don't you think Gregoire would have had more of an opportunity with Winnipeg had he had not been injured early in the year?

  15. I made this point with regards to preparing players for the Frozen Four experience and I will make it with regards to leaving early: These are 18-23 year olds we are talking about. They are very young and impressionable, particularly when agents are whispering sweet nothings into their ears. They tell these kids what they want to hear, get them to sign and then stash them in the AHL. And once they realize they aren't ready for the next level and wish they hadn't left early, it's too late to change their minds. I would hope these kids really listen to those that have gone before them and think really hard about the consequences of leaving early before you are 100% sure you are ready.

I agree to a point. Heck, if someone offered me hundreds of thousands of dollars to leave school early, I can't say I would have turned it down. As fun as college was, money is the great enticement.

On the other hand, these guys are not only receiving information from agents. They have family, Hakstol, and I'm sure they can call any one of the guys who left early for their opinion. I think that's where they'll get the most honest feedback about their game and their readiness.

But going back to the other side again, I'm sure some of these guys hear great things from the organization itself, and that would be difficult to ignore.

The bottom line is that this isn't an easy decision, and I think we can all respect the amount of information these guys have to process in order to reach that decision.

  16. I'm sure many have seen this already, but Schlossman just re-tweeted this info per Chris Botta:

RT @ChrisBottaNHL: Isles tell first-rounder Brock Nelson they're ready when he is. They're putting no pressure on UND center to leave school

RT @ChrisBottaNHL: Nelson weighing options with advisor, family and UND Coach Hakstol. 3rd year of college/Frozen 4 bid vs. year in minors.

  17. Simply stated, Rocco Grimaldi isn't a third line player or talent. He belongs on the first line if not the second, but with the likelihood of Knight, Kristo, Nelson staying intact, there is no room for him on that first unit. He'll be playing with Parks and Mcmillan. Rowney gets the demotion making the team better and deeper with his talent at 3rd line center.

Fair point. I'm as high on Grimaldi as anyone, and I agree, he's a top-line talent. I think it's just hard to ignore what the second line did this year. Honestly I believe Kristo will bolt, and there will be an opening that Grimaldi should be able to fill.

Regardless of how it turns out, we are going to have some unbelievable forward depth (assuming health ).

  18. Curious as to why people think they wouldn't keep the MacMillan-Rowney-Parks line together? Personally I think you at least start with them as your second line to see if they continue to play as well together as they did this season. I think they were often our best line over the second half of the year.

I realize these are just everyone's extremely early projections, and a lot can and will change, but assuming no early departures, my thinking is that the top two lines from this year stay together and you mix and match to find some good combos for the 3rd and 4th lines.

  19. Here's a link to an interview with Brad Treliving, VP of Hockey Operations and Assistant GM with the Coyotes:

    Treliving Interview

At about the 12 minute mark, he's asked about college prospects in their system who might be coming next year. Regarding Hextall, he says "Hextall is a player who, in the next day or so, we're trying to get done .... so he'll be coming out."

Very disappointing. Did not see that coming at all.

  20. Hextall...really?

where do you read this? HF board?

Schlossman said via Twitter that he was pursuing some Hextall rumors. Here's his tweet:

Re: Hextall rumors. Been working for two days to get something confirmed, but haven't gotten anything. I know PHX is after him.
