Boeser's Season in Perspective
I decided to compare Boeser's freshman campaign to past seasons and put it in historical perspective. I had heard a lot this season about where he ranked among Sioux freshman all time, but I couldn't recall anyone lining him up against all college hockey freshmen. I figured that the 60-point threshold was one very few college freshmen ever cross. At the same time, since he's confirmed his return for a second year, I was curious how those freshmen fared in their sophomore seasons.
Now the following only considers seasons back to 1999-2000. If anyone knows of a reliable resource for national statistics prior to that season, please let me know. However, I think this time frame is a better comparison than, say, going back another ten years considering the change in scoring environments from the 1980s and early 1990s to the previous 20 years or so. And someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe per game scoring has more or less declined about every season since (I know I've seen a few stats on this in the past, but it's incredibly difficult to locate). With that said, I think the following makes Boeser's past year that much more impressive. So without further ado...
Freshmen with 60+ points since '99-'00

And that's it. In the last 17 seasons, only five freshmen have reached the 60-point mark. Interesting that two players, Vanek and Parise, reached it in '02-'03, then it took 12 seasons before another freshman hit that mark. Now three have achieved it within the last two seasons. As far as the the follow up seasons, there's certainly not much to go on here as only two of four previous players returned. Interestingly enough neither Vanek or Parise were able to build on their freshmen breakouts, but of course both still had very good years.
So with that how about some predictions for Boeser's sophomore year? I think it will largely depend on whether Schmaltz returns, but I also have to think that teams will be gunning to shut him down, especially within the NCHC. I'll say with Schmaltz he goes 30-35-65. Without him I'll go with 24-28-52.

I don't see Cam going anywhere. I understand he's older, but teams aren't tripping over themselves for undrafted goalies.
And just so I know, what's the appropriate forum topic in which to speculate on our own guys? This one? The 16-17 season forum? I always thought this one was more for confirmed signings.

My prediction is he's gone. He's just won a championship, and if the Canucks are pursuing him as hard as people have indicated, I don't think he passes that up.

Are you listening to the same guy? I mean I'm 28 so not super far away from college(although now that I think about it I kind of am) but BUccigross(see what I did there) had a mega Eichel-boner in the semifinals and was outwardly ecstatic when BU clinched the game with the ENG.
Eichel-boner. Hahaha.
Overall I like Bucci. He does a great job promoting college hockey (or cawlidge hawkey as he says), and he at least brings enthusiasm to his calls. Now on the other hand, I agree, he was practically cheering for BU at times during the broadcast and constantly drooling over Eichel on Twitter and during his in studio visit leading up to the game.

Players and coaches shouldn't read fan forums at all, period. There is nothing to be gained from doing that.
That's what you got out of that? You sure know what's best for the players and coaches. Can you please apply the next time there's an AD opening. You have my support.

I thought he was a junior but you're right. He was also 23 after his sophomore season, where as Stecher just turned 21. I just think Stecher has so much he can improve he was good this year, but his season wasn't off the charts.

Blackheart, all I can say is thank you. I remember watching this game on WDAZ as a young chap, at least a lot younger than a lot on here anyway. I actually emailed Pat Sweeney in 2010 asking whether WDAZ would sell a copy of that game. He surprisingly responded but cited NCAA and UND copyrights. But this was some of the best hockey I’ve seen in a long time. As it happens I stumbled across this today which happens to be my older brother’s birthday. He was a senior at UND that year and was at the game. I sent him the link saying it was my gift to him, and I don’t think he could have asked for anything more.
