Hawai'i announcing they are joining the Big West Conference in non-football and their football team is joining Mountain West at this moment . WAC is down to 5 old teams (Idaho, Utah St, San Jose, New Mexico St & La Tech) and 3 new ones (Texas St, UT SA, Denver). Sure has become a southwest conference. Who will be next?

Really? Really? Of all the great reasons to choose to go to the University of North Dakota, you would not attend UND if its athletic teams were called the North Dakota Roughriders, but you would attend if the teams were called the North Dakota Roughnecks? As much as I personally dislike Roughnecks as a nickname for the athletic teams, it would not stop me from choosing UND. To pass on the opportunities that can come as a result of having the University of North Dakota on your resume because of a nickname just seems short-sighted. not to mention gophers!

choose your battles wisely grasshopper, and you may live to fight a better battle another day. Roughriders (or Rough Riders) is easily one of the top 5 names on this forum, probably second only to Fighting Sioux.

The Big Sky conference will put UND in the spotlight. Now that the Sioux have a conference home of the quality of the Big Sky, the recruits will come and the wins will too. UND is able to win championships against the Minnesota's, Wisconsin's and Michigan's of the hockey world. They will also learn to win in the world of Montana, Montana State, and the rest of the BSC.

actually, the Rough Riders fought in Cuba, not western North Dakota. Some of the members of the Rough Riders were Native Americans, fighting alongside Roosevelt, not against him.

wonder why NDSU is "so glad" they don't have to play the Sioux? especially after the Sioux have had a chance to catch up in recruiting and with the Big Sky on their schedule!

Let's try get back on topic.... Other than geography, which may or may not be a valid reason, is there any good reason that the Summit/MVFC would be better than the Big Sky?

According to Wiki, North Dakota is the only Fighting Sioux. There are several other teams that use native american names, such as Florida State Seminoles, Illinois Fighting Illini, Central Michigan Chippewas, Utah Utes.
