  1. Good question and I will probably say more than you wanted to here.(what's new).

Poor crowd never helps recruiting. The crowd there was good and there was a fair amount of noise. UND's play was a positive. The recruits saw a team that struggled in the second and third quarter, never quit, and came back and beat a quality opponent that arguably had more talent. The fact is we are getting better and makling the necessary strides to compete at the FCS level. If UND is recruiting the way I think they are, they need to be focusing on what UND offers academically first. (The AC leaves that out of the question too often. They will try get the kid to adjust to thier offereings rather than tell them they don't have what the kid wants. A great example was one recruit who was interested in Chemical Engineering and they told him getting a degree in any of the Engineering disciplines plus a double major in Chemistry was the same thing. They have told recruits their Athletic Training degree, which they no longer offer to undergrads, was basically the same as Physical Therapy. One would think kids smart enough to be an Engineer or Physical Therapist would know better but it doesn't always work that way.)

UND has a great academic institution and reputation. UND's academic and athletic facilities are excellent and with the planned upgrade for athletic facilities will be superb. The move to the Big Sky, increased TV exposure, and the travel to Idaho, Utah, Washington, California, Colorado and Arizona are also a real plus.

All schools talk about being a "family". At UND it is a reality. The former players keep track of each other, step up to help when necessary and network when it comes time to help someone get a job, into med school, into dental school etc. The post grad success of UND FB players is exceptional. Faison noticed that when he came to UND and wondered if we really understood what we have going for us. I don't get to speak with recruits much anymore but I can guarantee they will get a good education, develop great and lifelong relationships with their teammates and other UND students and Alumni, and if they are willing to think team first and bust their butts they will have success on the FB field.

UND is not a place where we have parts of the locker room where some players or even other students can't go. We recognize the value of our teammates but also alumni, staff and the student body and fans that are an important part of being a Champion. IF we ever get to the point we are so arrogant we forget that, then we will be no better than the clods to the south of us. The UND experience is so much more than a FB game whether or not you win a championship and that is what makes going to UND special.

Care to share the names of these two recruits you are telling stories about?

  2. Al wants one thing: To take power over the universities (I'm looking at you too NDSU) back from the ND SBoHE into the Legislature.

NDSU is well aware of this. I think it was Wyo who brought this up earlier this year on this board. Alvin and the Chipmunks are going to destroy higher ed in ND if they get their way. I am hoping his political career is soon over.

  3. My guess is that Omaha puts alot of their resources into their hockey program. They don't have to compete with Creighton and UN-L as they do in basketball. Focus on being a hockey school and have that be their bread and butter.

I think cutting FB and WR allows them to give all remaining programs a pretty big boost. Hockey has done it on their own up to this point and pumping more funds will only help that program get even further. Obviously they want to see the school get a firm hold on the hockey fans in the area. I see them looking at hockey in the same kind of light that MSUM has lately. Bring some attention to the school with hockey while building up the other programs in the process. If they can get the BB programs into a couple of NCAA tourney's they could slowly start chipping away at the Creighton strangle hold in Omaha. With the cutting of those two athletic programs they are going to have to see some production across the board quick or the Admin and AD will be run out of town in a hurry.

  4. I just don't get why the MVC can't just swallow up the MVFC teams, then have the remaining ones enter conferences close to them (ex. Horizon), and leave the startup teams (St. Cloud, Mankato if they choose) to the Great West. But I guess thats the NCAA for you. Some things are not supposed to make sense.

With all the craziness going on with conferences changing shape some might eventually have no choice but to start doing things like that.

  5. Is it not NDSU fans that rip on UND playing teams in the same division at St. Cloud and Mankato? Yes it was too bad ND went east instead of our conference, and we were stuck with St. Cloud, but I thought going DI NDSU and SDSU wanted to get "away" from teams like Omaha and St. Cloud, and now one is in the Summit because UNL won't let them have football (thanks to Trev Alberts), and the other is in the NSIC. You lost a team that danced 3 times in the last 6 years and would replace that team with Mankato or St. Cloud?? Omaha is replacing SUU...don't you see that your conference is going to be the worst in basketball since its not a basketball rich conference. SUU, IUPUI, ORU, NDSU, and Oakland are the only current members to ever "dance" from the Summit. Now you lose 2 of them. Replaced by Omaha so far. I have nothing against the NCC it was the best in DII (IMO!!) but that was DII this is DI. There is only 1 positive thing the Summit has going for them and that is baseball. BSC is the only conference not to sponsor it. They are sponsoring softball effective 2012, but thats where the line is drawn on major sports. I don't know how both stack up to volleyball or track. But in basketball the Big Sky is now clearing going to be better than the Summit..and more stable too.

I have already stated that the SU's didn't leave to distance themselves from the NCC. Some fans have said that in the past and it was simply incorrect. The two schools didn't have that mindset when leaving. The majority of conversations that I have been a part of when some of those comments were made were in response to UND fans smacking the teams NDSU was playing while in transition. The majority of comments I have seen recently about "moving on" are more from the Lakes type than from any level headed fan.

ORU has dominated the Summit in the past and now things aren't going in the direction they wanted it to. They have complained about having to play in the upper midwest for a few years now and have been really upset that the conference tournaments are being relocated up north. Their coaches and players have made comments about having to play a bunch of upper midwest teams full of white kids who play in cracker jack box stadiums. Their attendance for BB games is falling and I would be willing to bet that recruiting is getting a little more difficult now with the league migrating north away from their area. The SU's have won a few games already in the Summit tourney and have won the whole thing a couple of times already while being relatively young in DI and it is only a matter of time before they get established enough to take the place of what ORU has already done. Both SU's have more support than ORU and also have a much more rabbid fanbase. The same could be said of some of the new schools coming into the league as well. I have stated that losing ORU hurts and it isn't ideal to lose them just yet but I have seen stats that have shown that the league will still be rank about the same as it has without ORU as a member. It isn't as if ORU is a huge national power. They are simply a recognizable name for an average fan who knows a little bit about college athletics. The league will now have a group of teams very close together and some have a long history before the DI move. In time just like both of our schools they will eventually get through the first few years of being a newbie with D2 athleticism and start making some progress.

USD and Omaha are replacing SUU and Centenary. USD and Omaha are better products than Centenary and Omaha just dropped FB and Wrestling so you know they aren't going to let the remaining programs fail. If anything they are going to work their rears off early to justify the move. Omaha has a lot to prove now and they are going to want to compare themselves to their local counter part in Creighton. We all know it will be a hard road for them to do that but by doing what they did they have to succeed quickly and it seems to me that they are wanting to compete for fans in that town. This move could eventually make that happen years down the road.

The Summit is obviously not the Ideal conference for everyone and it is too bad that the MVC isn't more willing to make a move like the BSC. But to think that the Summit will be the worst conference in DI is far from accurate. Who knows what will happen when the big schools figure out where they are going to go. Ten years ago I didn't think either ND school would be having these types of conversations involving DI and now look where we both are today.

  6. You just gained Omaha and now all over BVille schools to replace ORU...St. Cloud and Mankato?? Hockey doesn't matter remember NDSU fan...its a niche sport. You guys dismiss our 7 DI titles so comparing DI basketball to DI hockey isn't the same in your green and gold glasses. Besides UMD won a national title in hockey, St. Cloud has been a member of DI hockey for decades while Omaha has been in DI hockey for years. SCSU, Mankato, and Omaha dropping football to join the Summit...where's Augy, and Morningside. My point is the Summit is turning into nothing more than a GWC with DII teams. I am glad UND is out of that conference. Yes better chance at the dance but getting to the championship against St. Cloud or Omaha?? If you lose..WOW!!!

You also just gained Omaha and instead of Notre Dame you got St. Cloud so I believe you picked up a school you didn't really want either. You have a bad habit of grouping all NDSU fans into one. I have never dismissed your hockey titles nor would I ever. I could fire back at you with NDSU winning 8 titles in football and then wait for you do dismiss them because they are from so long ago and were won while still in D2. It can go on like this forever so why even do it? I don't understand how you justify NCC schools being in your conference because they have been in DI for a number of years while dismissing their other programs who are just making the move. They are still former NCC schools who have played pretty good hockey throughout the years and have had success at the D2 level. Now their other programs finally have an opportunity to play at the same level as their hockey teams. Why are the former NCC schools so inferior to you when they are playing in sports other than hockey? Do UNO and SCSU have different schools for the kids in hockey than the ones in all other sports? Do you think these former NCC schools would be as successful in DI hockey if there were over 300 schools participating? My point is we both have the same number of former NCC schools in our respective conferences and even a couple of the same. It is true that they have done some pretty good things in hockey but that doesn't mean that after a few years competing in DI they won't start playing some pretty good ball either. UND will eventually be playing these schools for OOC games and with the smack you are laying down you better hope they don't catch up.

  7. The NCHC is not applicable the Summit situation. A more apt comparison to the NCHC is when most of the original WAC members left and started the Mountain West.

The member schools were part of the former NCC in all other sports. The schools still wear the same name on their hockey jerseys as the other school sponsored athletic programs.

  8. What's wrong with a scenario where one North Dakota research university has eastward ties and one has westward ties? I'd think that 's a win-win scenario because it opens lots of contacts and creates lots of options.

I completely agree with this. As far as the NCC 2.0 smack from Darrel I don't understand your angle. The NCHC has SCSU, UNO, UMD and UND in it who are all former NCC schools. Summit has NDSU, SDSU, UNO and USD. What exactly is your point or were you typing before thinking?

  9. What got me is how we get slammed almost everyday from NDSU about travel and just basically about being in the Big Sky where 8 years ago they wanted in the Big Sky so bad and travel was never an issue for the school. Now that ORU is leaving they are slamming them too with idiotic statements:

    http://www.bisonvill...tomorrow/page11

ORU went to the dance in 2006, 2007, and 2008. Besides NDSU's 1 year and Oakland there hasn't been any other Summit member since IUPUI in 2003 in the Dance. Last Summit team to win a first round game (not no play in game (Oakland 2005) was Valpo in 1998.

There are a lot of fans out there who type before they think. Travel wasn't an issue for NDSU at the time because the only options at that point were DI indy or go back to D2. I remember some heavy smack going on here about the FCS before UND left D2. I wonder if everyone still feels the same way now as they did back then? I think you switched positions on the Sioux name recently as well. Things change and so do opinions.

  10. If Douple doesn't try everything in his power to lure UND away from the Big Sky he wouldn't be doing his job IMHO. That seems like a given with the Summit transience now, and historically. I agree with Geaux, I would be shocked if UND accepted. If I'm a yote fan, I'm far more concerned about what would happen if the Big Sky offered NDSU a spot. Again, given the state of both conferences, it seems to me far more likely NDSU would accept a hypothetical Big Sky offer, than UND accepting Summit/MVFC. Not that either scenario is likely to happen.

St. Cloud was invited to the Summit BB tourney and attended. They already have a DI hockey program that was just added to a solid conference and it appears that they are moving towards shutting down the FB program. Homecoming activities were canceled due to lack of participation. It wouldn't surprise me if they are waiting for the money to be in place for the move up before anything is said. Just drop the bomb like Omaha did.

  11. I think history shows that no Summit member has ever been committed to that conference. Maybe Western Illinois, but that is it. Every other member wishes they were in a different league.

Exactly, every school looks at it as a good place to get your feet wet before moving on to better opportunities. I disagree with a few who are saying that NDSU tried to distance themselves from the NCC. We have discussed on this board before that an attempt was made to move the whole conference up. I don't disagree that the move wouldn't have worked but many options were discussed before the SU's left. Bringing in USD and Omaha helps keep the League as stable as it can. They are pulling the conference footprint closer and have a history with a few schools who are already in the league. With ORU leaving it hurts but it is far from a death blow. It has been mentioned that the path to the NCAA's just got a little easier for the time being and as the schools get themselves better established in DI better opportunities will probably surface. With all the moving around going on right now I wouldn't be surprised if more conferences start looking to expand in the future once the big boys settle down and make their moves. ORU stuck with this League for years through all the changing that has occurred and I just don't see anyone hitting the panic button anytime soon because of their departure. If schools were leaving and none were being replaced then I would start to worry. Some schools may not be exactly what you want but I feel the majority of them are committed to their athletic departments and things will continue on just like they always have in the ever changing Summit.

  12. What are you 3?? Or is that your IQ?

It's funny because I asked myself that same question about you after reading some of your posts all over the internet the past few months. If you can't comprehend that I was joking then you already answered the question for me.

  13. How do you sit next to someone in an online classroom? Just asking. Please explain. :)

Darell said it was Little Johnny's major and Johnny said he had taken a couple of classes. I felt that it was a very good possibility that they have shared a classroom together while in persuit of the same major. Now if Little Johnny said that he was taking all of his classes online I wouldn't have asked the question. :)

  14. Was this because the students at NDSU in those days were mostly headed back to the farm and left NDAC when they had garnered the education they desired, whether they had enough credits to graduate or not? I have friends who went to NDSU to take the classes they needed to run their farms better, but didn't feel it was necessary to get the sheepskin to run a good agricultural operation. This is not intended as smack. Merely an observation of the focus of the students in the 60s and earlier. I think the enrollments were similar, and yes, UND did indeed have more students, just not by that large of a margin.

I haven't read much about the enrollments between the two schools. I do know that NDAC also had high school students that counted towards overall enrollment. I have a publication that states NDAC's total enrollment in 1893 was 62 and 41 of those were HS students. 1911 saw 149 college students and 130 HS students. It wasn't until 1938 that NDAC High School was discontinued. Enrollments didn't rebound until after WWII and by that time UND had about double the enrollment of NDSU's. Funding wasn't even close prior to 1960 and in fact the state legislature nearly shut NDAC down in the late 30's by stripping away large portions of their funding and firing the administration. After that stunt the people of ND voted to create the SBoHE.

  15. Here's what's interesting:

NDSU fans are debating with UND about who's better and how close the football programs are. Clearly, because NDSU fans are here and discussing it, it must be close enough to warrant the conversation.

Could the conversation continue to other areas? Volleyball? The vaunted NDSU program just lost to UND. MBB or WBB? Sure NDSU holds the recent win in MBB, but none of these programs has much to crow about (spotlighted by the departure of the Woodside class from NDSU).

But then the conversation turns ugly when UND fans point out their hockey program that has alumni with gold and silver medals, mens and womens, from the Vancouver Olympics and a recent captain of a Stanley Cup winner. NDSU has no answer to, nothing to match to, UND's premier program.

So the conversation has to return to football.

But by NDSU fans returning to football they are admitting the programs are close enough to have the conversation.

The conversation returns to football because that is the sport that most people are interested in when it comes to the NDSU-UND rivalry (title of this thread for example). If you wish to discuss another sport I am up for that conversation as well.

  16. The fact that NDSU had the audacity to still want to play UND while they were moving up to I-AA and UND was still in D2 shows how classless that program is and how desperate they were to beat the Sioux. They couldn't get the job done on a level playing field, so they stacked the deck in their favor and cried foul when UND didn't take the bait.

The analogy of what they did is this...

Say you get into a fitsfight with the same guy every day and get your a$$ handed to you each and every time (or at least 10 times out of 13). Then you go get a couple of buddies and challenge the guy to a 3 on 1 fight. Yeah, pretty lame.

I hated them when they used to beat the snot out of us in back in the '80s but at least I respected them at that time. They were a great team and they beat us repeatedly on a level playing field. But trying to stack the deck in your favor to get that edge back when the shoe is on the other foot is about the most dishonorable thing I can think of doing in that situation. I lost all respect for them after they moved up and expected us to continue playing them. That was a cowardly move IMHO.

Before 1960 UND had a major advantage over NDSU and yet they still played the game. UND fans love to point to the series record between the two schools but ignore the fact that UND was huge compared to NDSU before the 60's. 50,000+ had graduated from UND by 1960 only 9,000 had graduated from NDSU. Now looking at those figures take a minute and think about the funding differences between the two schools back then. Was it cowardly for UND to be playing NDSU before the 60's and the un-level playing field that UND had during that time? The fact remains that NDSU still played those games and wanted to continue on with the series when they left. Your administration wanted to drive NDSU athletics into the ground for leaving the NCC and decided to make life a little harder for NDSU by not scheduling them in any sport. If the reason truely was that they didn't want to play against a team that posed an un-level playing field for them then why did they schedule UNI in 2006 and why are they scheduling up now?

  17. I think the point was the quality of the FBS opponent. NDSU (and these games are generally scheduled years in advance so it is basically out of their control) has played some very poor FBS programs. The 2007 Minnesota team was 119 out of 120 according to Massey if memory serves for example. Last years Kansas team was not much better. Central Michigan, who NDSU defeated to their credit, is hands down the most talented FBS program that NDSU has faced so far.

The 2009 Texas Tech team and the 2010 Northern Illinois team that North Dakota played were far better FBS programs than any FBS opponent that NDSU has played to date, save for perhaps Central Michigan..........................

I'm not jumping into that argument. He mentioned playing in tougher DI venues than NDSU in a previous post. I guess I should've replied to that one instead.

  18. I was making the point that NDSU hasn't gone to a Texas Tech, or a Fresno State....Thank you for backing up my point....I guess....

    2006 NDSU vs. Minnesota: 62,845

    2007 NDSU vs. Minnesota: 63,088

    NDSU vs Iowa State: 48,831

    NDSU vs Kansas: 48,417

    UND vs. Texas Tech: 47,824

    UND vs NIU: 18,046

    UND vs Idaho: 11,466

Fresno State averaged 34,120 last year.

NDSU averaged over 3,000 more fans per game than Idaho in 2010.

  19. Good for NDSU - would that be for the basketball practice lean-to, the new weight area, or the actual BSA BB court?

All the money for the BSA renovation has to be in place before they can start. The T&F facility was a separate project. I'm not sure which area will be started first.

  20. In Dec of 09, the SBoHE approved an IPF for UND. Since the money is not appropriated, the approval still stands as long as it doesn't go over budget.

NDSU is still $10 mill short on BSA fundraising, so we may be looking at a new domed retractable roofed stadium before the BSA ever gets remodeled. ;)

Rumors around are that more gift announcements will be made before the end of the school year. I also over heard Gene Taylor saying that the BSA remodel could possibly break ground next summer.
