  1. I thought the nickname of "Gold" was one of the dumbest I've ever hear. Apparently, I wasn't the only one with how soon the school dumped it. My question is didn't the Athletic Department do some research into the name change? It sure doesn't look like they did. Otherwise, they might have done the following in the first place.

As many as 100,000 alumni worldwide, nearly 11,000 students and more than 2,000 employees potentially could be involved in the final decisio
  2. They've got to be kidding. Well, it's pretty obvious that tennis and skiing were the top sports considered in this article. More likely, the Edina AD simply sent SI a nice fat check.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Edina came in at #8 in SI's list of top 25 high school's in the country.

    8. EDINA (Minn.), Enrollment: 1,675 (grades 10-12)

The NHL may be in a deep freeze, but fans in the Minneapolis area had plenty of hockey to cheer about this past winter. The Hornets boys' team, coached by former North Stars defenseman Curt Giles drew between 1,500 and 1,800 fans a game and won the Classic Lake Conference title. Edina has earned a Minnesota-record nine state championships in boys' hockey (the girls' hockey team was second in its conference this year) and has been almost that good in girls' Alpine skiing, with seven titles since 1997. The Hornets' strongest sport, however, is tennis. The boys have won 21 state championships. The girls won 15 straight state titles from '78 to '92 and have a current streak of eight in a row.

  3. They are $1500 per seat ($330 is a donation to the Fighting Sioux Club)

Here is what that gets you:

    - Tickets to all events in the Ralph except NCAA tournament events

    - Tickets to all UND basketball games in the Betty

    - Complimentary alcoholic beverages prior to each event in the Ralph

    - Complimentary soda and snacks during events

    - Ability to purchase 1 club lounge SRO ticket at general admission prices

    - Membership to FSC

    - Parking pass for the Ralph

    - Lifetime, fully transferable ownership rights

  4. There was a letter with the renewal info about 30 season tickets being open in the club lounges. I don't think they are that bad of a deal being that you get tickets for all non-NCAA events in the Ralph, basketball tickets in the Betty, and a parking pass. I would consider getting one of those if I lived in GF.

  5. I have trouble seeing how someone would think that if they really studied the historical facts and knew the orientation of the administrators in the different eras.  Back when they were looking at hockey they had a different President and a different athletic director.  The cast of characters has changed dramatically so I see no link between not getting D-1 hockey back when Bob Entzion (AD)/Jim Ozbun (Pres) tried and what is happening in the Gene Taylor (AD)/Joe Chapman (Pres) era.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I realize that the administration has changed since the last DI hockey push. I just don't see how NDSU could have made the move to DI for the rest of their sports if hockey had been added. It's probably a good thing for Taylor/Chapman that the hockey drive failed since they don't have to worry about paying for a men's and (likely) women's hockey teams which you would think would give the maximum number of scholarships allowed. I do sometimes wonder about the timing of the DI move they made. NDSU seemed so anxious to move to DI that they did so with a barely adequate DII basketball facility which there seems to be no real plan on replacing.

  6. More info on Zach's missed penalty shot:

    http://sports.espn.go.com/oly/news/story?id=2056461

Zach Parise was stopped on a penalty shot with 1:25 left, but the United States clinched a spot in the quarterfinals of the world hockey championships by tying last-place Ukraine 1-1 Monday.

"I was very nervous," said Parise, who played this season with Albany of the American Hockey League. "But we've been doing it all year in the American League, we have the shootout thing there. I've taken a few. I did the move I did most of the time, and it worked most of the time, but not today."

Parise, playing just his second game in the worlds, skated toward the right of the net and had his back-hander turned away by Simchuk.

"He played a great game for us and is a goal scorer," coach Peter Laviolette said of Parise, the son of former NHL player J.P. Parise. "He's the future of USA hockey."

  7. Do you honestly believe that theory? If you do I would be interested in hearing about any data that supports your theory.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I could see how someone would think that. What I wonder is if NDSU had been successful in getting a hockey team about five years ago, would they have moved the other teams up to DI? I'd have to say no. They might have considered it, but I don't think they would have made the move. I don't think the hockey team would be making much money considering they'd likely be in the CHA, and I don't see fans flocking to see the likes of AL-Huntsville. They'd also have to add a womens team (likely hockey as well) for Title IX reasons, and that team is sure to be a money drain.

  8. The only time I thought it made sense for UND to play in the Ralph was the Kansas and NDSU games. Unless they get someone with that kind of drawing power coming in (and I don't see that happening anytime soon), there is no reason to play in the Ralph. Somehow, I don't think the hockey program is crying over all the bball games being in the Betty.

  9. As Mike McFeely's column states, the arena measures chance to pass is greater with a low voter turnout.

It's simple, really. People who are opposed to the arena say they don't care enough to go to the polls. People who support the arena say they will vote for sure.

Translation: The lower the turnout, the better the chance the proposal will pass because the results will be skewed toward arena supporters.

The Ice Sharks biggest problem (other than playing in a dump) was that they didn't win, and Fargo doesn't seem too willing to turnout for losers. NDSU women's basketball teams have had higher average than the men in the past largely because they men weren't that good. The Redhawks have consistently drawn fans, but they've also never had a bad year and don't have to compete with any other teams. The competition for fans is what I think will kill any hockey team in town especially since NDSU's move to D-I and the amount of marketing they will likely do anytime they bring an opponent in with any kind of name recognition. UND and the Grand Forks area have built a hockey following over 50+ years. These arena proposals that keep coming up in Fargo seem to forget this by wanting to put a team in a building that the community hasn't shown it can support either financially or capacity wise. I see this building as something that will be a drain on the taxpaper and will also take the Fargodome into the red due to the increased competition for acts/events.

  10. The makers of the college hockey mod for NHL 2004 did create a roster for the Sioux which I edited and then used to create my own team. I used the Dallas Stars' uniforms. Since there was no Sioux logo, I used the $1 milllion dollar bill included in the game's pre-made logos.  ;)

    Okay, I'm a geek.  :D

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

You're not alone. I create the Sioux every year in EA's NCAA Football. You can get pretty close to the real thing. You could get the exact uniform if they'd ever let you pick the actual logo Notre Dame has on their helmet instead of the leprachaun. Then you play your games in the U of Idaho's stadium which looks similar to the Alerus if you ignore the indoor track. You can pick the right fight song thanks to UND sharing it with Ohio University.

  11. To put it into comparison, JJ Redick goes 121/300 for just over 40%.  Not to say that Andy Miller is going to have a Redickesque impact,

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Maybe that's a good thing for him because if he was Redickesque that would instantly make him the most hated player in the NCC and subject him to endless taunting. Plus, as a Carolina fan, I'd rather have a McCants-type. Then again, that might not be such a good idea.

  12. I've been waiting a long time to see a hockey game in high-def so I think it's ironic the first one I'll see will have UND playing in it. I went and upgraded my receiver today to the HD DVR model so, if the Sioux win, I'll have a high-def copy to replay over and over. I was somewhat surprised that both the semifinals and finals are being broadcast in HD given that ESPN didn't televise higher rated events (like this year's UNC-Duke game) in HD.

  13. Rick Reilly has an interesting article in the current SI about Roger Maris and how he didn't take any performance enhancing drugs to hit 61 homers. There are quite a few quotes from Roger Maris, Jr. Including this one:

But until there's more proof, I don't want to say Dad's record was broken illegally. But I have my suspicions."
Reilly finished the article by saying
Yeah, well, some of us don't have to wait for a commissioner or panel or act of Congress to find the truth. As far as I'm concerned, the home run mark belongs to a shy, big-boned guy from Fargo, N.Dak., who belted 61 on nothing more than Lucky Strikes and Pepto-Bismol.

And if McGwire or Sosa or Bonds makes it into Cooperstown before Roger Maris, the lights ought to be turned off and the doors never opened again.

Now that would be a dark hall.

  14. It'll be interesting to see who gets the job. Assuming he applies, the husband of Shantel Rivard, Peter, is the head men's and women's soccer coach at Mayville State. If he got the position and does a good job, you'd assume he'd stick around as long as his wife is the hockey coach.

Taken from Shantel Rivard's coaches bio on the FightingSioux.com.

    Rivard
  15. If the current Sioux logo was used for TV broadcasts, it couldn't be any harder to make out than Denver's logo which some people can't seem to figure out no matter how big it's shown.

  16. Damn Yahoo,

I really want to download Sparky's goal, but yahoo say's too many transfers.  Is this posted anywhere else?

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I figured bandwidth restrictions would be a problem with hosting it there, but I didn't know where else to put it.

  17. Moorhead State #2? I doubt they'd finish higher than 4th if they were in the NCC. If the Sioux lose and Moorhead somehow ends up hosting the regional, it would almost be like home games for the Sioux based on the past turnout for UND games there in the past.

  18. Also I think the reason the students were spitting in the penalty box was because MacMurchy had thrown the water bottle at them.  Both are idiots, though MacMurchy throwing the bottle is funny to me.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Whoa, hold on there. I don't believe for a second that a Badger player would ever throw a water bottle at Sioux player/fan. :D:blush:
