    1. Grand Valley State

Led by QB Cullen Finnerty, Lakers are poised for third title in four years

    2. Pittsburg State

Gorillas will punish foes with bruising RB Germaine Race (2,213 yards, 26 TDs)

Gamebreaker Weston Dressler led all divisions with 613 punt-return yards

    4. Valdosta State

QB Barrett Wilkes one of 13 new starters defending champs must break in

    5. N.W. Missouri State

RB Xavier Omon rushed for 1,575 yards and 19 TDs as a freshman last year

    6. Edinboro

Fighting Scots stocked on offense with front five and TB Andre Burke all back

    7. East Stroudsburg

Warriors well-armed behind QB Jimmy Terwilliger (3,826 yards, 33 TDs in '04)

    8. Texas A&M-Kingsville

Javelinas' hard-nosed D anchored by All-America LB Deandrae Fillmore

Dual-threat QB Kyle Kolbe guides offense that averaged 40.2 points per game

    10. Albany State

Golden Rams have pair of big-play backs in Antwan Andrews and Antonio Atkins

I didn't realize until I read this that Dressler lead all division in punt return yardage.

  2. I had to count mine to make sure they were all there. It didn't seem thick enough for twelve tickets. I guess I got use to them being in a book rather than being rubber-banded together.

  3. Letting Notre Dame keep its nickname is consistent with letting the NC school founded by Native Americans keep theirs.....the NCAA apparantly sees a difference between members of a group and nonmembers...

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

While Notre Dame and NC-Pembroke might be similar, my big problem is that the NCAA's ruling didn't include non-Indian names. Could it be that the NCAA didn't want to tick off Notre Dame and its (wealthy) alumni?

  4. I don't know if someone has brought this up before or not, but I don't get why the NCAA doesn't just eliminate all nicknames based on ethnic groups. Notre Dame would still get to keep their name based on the fact that NC-Pembroke can use the Braves nickname without sanctions based on the school's historically high Indian enrollment. Obviously, the the USA's history is why American Indian nicknames are targeted, but how are the other names any different? I'm sure you can find an Irishman somewhere who doesn't like Notre Dame's nickname.

In case this wasn't already posted, here is a story from Ray Ratto on ESPN.com.

NCAA mascot ban doesn't mean squat

I say we organize a PETA group the next time we play SCSU and protest their use of the Huskies as a mascot. His article did get me thinking. Why doesn't the NCAA go after the use of devil and demon based nicknames? There have to be groups out there who find those names offensive.

  5. I want to know what the NCAA is going to determine as offensive.

Will Florida State, that has the blessing of the Seminole tribe, be included in that group or not?

Ugh, this just wrecks my weekend.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

Here's the NCAA's stance on FSU.

Florida State, for example, has received permission from the Seminole tribe in Florida to use the nickname. That, however, will not suffice.

"Other Seminole tribes are not supportive," said Charlotte Westerhaus, the NCAA vice president for diversity and inclusion.

  6. They are changing the rule. Teams will now be required to have an average of 14 players. They will also no longer have to list some "phantom" injury as the players will either be active or inactive similar to the NHL.

  7. I found this about Brian Lee on NHL.com regarding the top North American prospects.

Brian Lee -- Defenseman Brian Lee is the best player coming out of Minnesota this year and the only high-school player chosed for Team USA at the 2005 World Junior Championship. He also is the 15th-ranked skater among North American prospects by the NHL's Central Scouting Service. Lee, a 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-hand shot, played last season with his Minnesota high-school Moorhead Spuds and later the USHL Lincoln Stars. Lee is the 2005 Minnesota "Mr. Hockey" and the Associated Press Player of the Year.

The Spuds were undefeated in section play and 25-2-2 overall, but they were upset in the state finals. Lee had three assists in 12 regular-season games. He had two goals and three assists in the playoffs but the Stars were knocked out in four games. Lee has committed to the University of North Dakota this fall.

According to CSS, Lee is a very strong skater both forward and backwards with remarkable balance and mobility. He is an upright skater who takes short, quick strides when starting from a standstill. He has plenty of acceleration when needed and can lead the rush. He has very good hands and playmaking ability. He has patience and poise on the power play.

Lee has a very good wrist shot from the point and finds his teammates in traffic with a smooth passing touch. He's a smart player who sees the ice well and takes advantage of plays developing in front of him. Lee, the Spuds' team captain, leads by example. He has a calm, confident manner and takes control in bad situations. He is very good one-on-one and is well positioned.

Ryan Stoa, a Gopher recruit, is another player listed.

  8. I read somewhere that the rule about the goalie puck handling zone didn't have that big of an impact last year when it was used in the AHL.

One other thing that could be big is the new rule on icing. The team called for icing can no longer make a line change on the ensuing face-off. You'd think this would lead to more scoring opportunities as tired players don't ice the puck because of this, or they do ice the puck allowing the opposing team to put out fresh players.

  9. The NHL did move the nets two feet close to the boards and shrink the neutral zone by four feet. The link below lists all the changes they made.

    http://www.nhl.com/nhlhq/cba/rules_changes072205.html

It's nice to see the league finally crack down on the size of the goalie equipment. SI had a picture in their NHL preview issue about two years ago comparing goalie equipment now to the 80's. Everything besides the arm blocker is much bigger now. The glove back then looked like a first basemen's mitt compared to what they use now.

  10. ESPN had 11 moments as most memorable for MN including:

    Most memorable sports moment?

Minnesota Vikings become first team to lose four Super Bowls, falling 32-14 against Raiders (1977)

Univ. of Minnesota reaches Final Four for first time in school history but loses to Kentucky in semifinal (1997)

Gary Anderson misses first FG of season, costing Vikings the NFC championship game against Atlanta (1998)

Univ. of Minnesota men's hockey wins NCAA Frozen Four, school's first title in sport (2002)

Univ. of Minnesota women's hockey captures second consecutive NCAA title, beating Harvard 4-3 in overtime (2005)

    - The Vikings losing four Super Bowls. That's a great memory for Viking fans.

    - MN reaching the Final Four? Not according to the NCAA as they Gophers had to wipe that out of their record book.

    - Gary Anderson's missed FG? Memorable for Packer fans maybe.

    - UND has six football titles and apparently the Gophers have two hockey titles.

    - Nothing against women's hockey, but why did they include that? They already had 10 other moments and it's a minor sport. How about the Gophers winning the men's golf title after the school announced plans to cut the sport the following year instead?

With about 2,300 votes, the UND-MN rivarly is pulling almost the same number of votes as the MN-WI rivarly in hockey and football combined.

    Best rivalry?

77.9% Minnesota Vikings vs. Green Bay Packers

9.3% Univ. of Minnesota vs. Univ. of North Dakota (hockey)

4.8% Univ. of Minnesota vs. Univ. of Wisconsin (hockey)

4.7% Univ. of Minnesota vs. Univ. of Wisconsin (football)

2.6% Minnesota Twins vs. Chicago White Sox

0.7% Minnesota Wild vs. Dallas Stars

  11. They're not playing right now, but ESPN should have included UND vs. NDSU for football as it's the bigest rivarly in my mind (provided they play each other again). ESPN included SDSU vs USD in football for SD.

    Favorite pro team?

    Chicago Cubs

    Dallas Cowboys

    Green Bay Packers

    Minnesota Timberwolves

    Minnesota Twins

    Minnesota Vikings

    Minnesota Wild

    New York Yankees

More like least favorite for me. The Packers was the easy choice as I don't care one way or another about the Twins, T-wolves, and Wild and I can't stand the Cubs, Cowboys, Vikings, and Yankees.

  12. I liked the choices for most memorable moment.

    Most memorable sports moment?

Roger Maris hits 61 home runs to establish new MLB single-season record (1961)

Doug Smail ties record with four goals as UND wins NCAA hockey title (1980)

University of North Dakota wins seventh NCAA hockey title (2000)

University of North Dakota wins sixth Div. II football national title (2001)

North Dakota defeats North Dakota St. 28-21 in OT in Nickel Trophy game (2003)

Maris was obviously going to be on there, but I found it funny that ESPN included four moments for UND victories and only one mention of NDSU and that being a loss. Although, you could argue that ESPN screwed up on the UND football championship entry and might have put NDSU's DII titles there instead if they did indeed mix up the schools (not that they've ever done that before).

  13. http://www.uscho.com/news/2005/07/02_010652.php

Among the new proposals (they still need final apporoval), goals will now count if an offensive player's skate is in the crease but doesn't affect the goalie (a couple years too late for Maine fans). The penalty for checking into the boards has been increased.

Now, anytime a player is hit from behind into the boards, regardless of the result of the play, a major penalty and a game misconduct or disqualification must be assessed.
I'm sure Bina's injury was a factor in this. Other proposals include restricting the size of goalie equipment, enforcing the rule that goalies can only freeze the puck outside the crease (unless it prevents a goal), and spraying the goalie is now a minor (but what about drinking from the goalie's water bottle).

The experimental rule that Michigan proposed and was approved for any school to use in exhibitions sounds interesting.

The proposal would change the attacking zone boundary from the blue line to the center ice red line after the traditional zone is gained legally. So, if the attacking team gains the traditional attacking zone legally under current rules on side, the attacking zone expands to include the space between the blue line and the center ice red line.

I would think the additional space would be a bigger advantage on Olympic size rinks as a team could really spread out the defense.

  14. I think the change in the rookie pay scale might have the biggest impact on kids staying in school. Under the new CBA, only the first two years are guaranteed with the 3rd and 4th both being team options this is down from three years guaranteed and the 4th as a team option. Supposedly, this has already had an impact with foreign players as some agents don't think their client can prove their worth in two years (i.e. Darko Milicic).

I don't have a problem with kids like Amare S. and LeBron J. leaving after high school, but these are the exceptions. I think the reason an age limit and the rookie pay scale change are needed is you have more kids declare for the draft than there are draft picks.

It doesn't have to do with an age limit, but it's nice to see the NBA is taking a que from hockey. Instead of having to make up injuries, teams will now have active and inactive lists.

  15. I know Americans are renown for their poor geography (especially geography outside the US), but I have a feeling that the people of Kennewick would be surprised to learn they live in Oregon.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

The writer must have borrowed the map that ESPN used for the 2001 DII football championship. ESPN had Fargo located 75 miles to the northeast of Grand Forks which puts Fargo in either Minnesota or Manitoba.

  16. The 8th in the nation was really surprising.  Especially when they are basing it on the last ten years, yet listed Edina's history.  How many fb, bball, and hockey titles for Edina in the last ten?  I believe they won a hockey title for sure.  Small individual sports like tennis are a lot easier to win than the big team sports.

    <{POST_SNAPBACK}>

I thought the same thing when I read the article. SI said they based the rankings on the past 10 years but then they kept pointing out the overall history rather than the last 10 years.
