At forward I'm thinking Jost, Hoff, Yon, Smith, and Bowen. That's five to replace the departing five. (I'm hoping Schmaltz stays.)

At defense, Poolman and Johnson. I'd love to say Bast, but I'm not sure because he missed most of last season.

But, if those are the incomings that would bring in all the 95 and 96 DOBs in the pipeline plus Jost.

If Bast doesn't come, then we need a third defenseman.  Do they go with Bowen, as Schloss was hinting last week, or do they go with one of the '97's?

And if they go with Bowen at D, then they need another forward, and they only have one 97 forward (Keane).  If Schmaltz goes, they'll need two more out of that 97 age group.

Oh, four or five years without a Frozen Four appearance and maybe even a missed NCAA tournament or two...and that national championship would be in the rear-view mirror pretty quickly.

Exactly.  Ask Wisconsin fans how much fun they've had since ending their own sixteen year "natty" drought in 2006.

What I learned about Dilks from reading that:

    - he hates UND (he plainly admits motive)

    - he didn't proof his own work (where's SCSU)

    - he's not a pro (as pros don't use profanity)

As I've said before, the only way UND in the Big Ten would be acceptable to me is if UND had it in writing that UND games would always be two-game Fri/Sat night series unless UND signed off on something else for a specific weekend.

I'm not sure he necessarily hates UND or its hockey team.  Now, I'm pretty sure he isn't real fond of us, the fans.

Yea. Personally - I'm not so sure thats the best thing for them in the long run. Rumor I heard thrown around is that they wanted Mel Pearson but he either wasn't able or willing to move so Red is around another year.

I think Red's return signals something else.  More particularly, I think it could very well mean we're going to see Connor, Motte and Compher back.

Folks, if the Big Ten calls, you answer. The jump by Notre Dame affirms that.

    Notre. Dame. Jumped.

Notre Dame left Hockey East for Big Ten Hockey. Get it?

Now, if the Big Ten goes to eight, who?

Omaha? UN-Lincoln won't go for that, even as their surrogate. Denver? Miami?

Folks, USCHO broke the "Notre Dame to Big Ten" story. I guess that tells me they have insights worth listening to, such as ...

I'm going to say the eastern* Big Ten got their team. Notre Dame fills barns in Ann Arbor, East Lansing, Happy Valley, and Columbus.

What in the west is the best hope to fill Minnesota's and Wisconsin's not at capacity arenas? There's one answer and USCHO says it above.

Arizona State can have UND's slot in the NCHC (and I'm pretty sure DU and CC wouldn't be all that upset).

If the Big Ten calls, you answer.

Anyone who thinks the B1G is going to call UND is kidding themselves.  It's ASU, people.  This isn't rocket science.  There is a huge, nationally known university with a hockey program that needs a conference home.  If I had to guess, the ASU decision actually preceded the Notre Dame discussions.  That is, the B1G reached a decision to offer ASU a spot, with ASU basically verbally agreeing, subject to final agreements in place, and then discussions opened with Notre Dame, who was only too happy to get out of HE.

If the NCHC brass is even remotely considering adding Bemidji and Mankato, I hope someone reminds them they're the NATIONAL Collegiate Hockey Conference, not the Regional Collegiate Hockey Conference.  It should not be watered down with a majority membership of mediocre D2 schools.

I believe, in the not too distant future, we are going to see BSU and Mankato in the NCHC and WMU and Miami in a conference with some of their old CCHA foes.  It's going to happen, and I don't think it will necessarily be bad for anyone.

I don't think this move will be driven by the NCHC.  I just think WMU and Miami are going to look to "move" back to the Michigan and Ohio schools, leaving us with 6 teams.  BSU and Mankato are logical geographical fits, and probably don't want to be stuck as the two western outliers (besides Alaska) in a conference made up of Michigan and Ohio teams.

  7. I want to see if this UND team has developed the grit necessary to win NCAA tournament games.  It's been a pretty smooth season thus far.  Relatively easy non-conference schedule where they did what they had to do.  Cruised at or near the top of the conference standings all year, and secured an NCAA berth, and #1 seed, early.  We've yet to see this team participate in a game they had to win.

NU, on the other hand, has basically played "win or go home" games since the first of December.  That kind of pressure, and success, even if done against average competition, can build a pretty strong team.

I am hopeful the experience of our juniors and seniors will summon the ability to play with urgency that is necessary in the NCAAs.

You're thinking very short term.  In the long run (if hockey continues to grow throughout the Midwest) I can see this conference being very good. Teams like Penn State and OSU have some nice recruits in the pipeline currently, so does Notre Dame.  MSU needs a new coach and ASU simply needs 5 years or so.  The Big10, INMHO, will probably be a very good conference in 10 years.  ND pretty much just solidified that.  Now I know why Jackson came out and agreed with the B10's proposal to reduce the age of incoming freshman.....because he knew they would going to join.  I think college hockey is going to go through a transformation over the next 10-15 years....hopefully our conference will keep afloat.

    I agree completely with this.

ASU adds nothing, and is a temporary renter in the B1G.  It remains to be seen what happens with Notre Dame.  Maybe they just continue as an affiliate member, maybe they join the B1G in all sports.  I don't think it can be predicted.  Hard to believe the school follows the hockey program's lead with respect to conference moves.

But in the long term the B1G is going to be fine, and even thrive as a hockey conference.  OSU and PSU have seen really nice jumps in attendance since the switch.  Wisconsin won't suck forever.

I agree.  I'd much rather see Michigan that Denver again.

No way. I'd much rather see DU again. Michigan is precisely the type of team that has given us fits this year. Talented forward line. At least we know DU.

Agree.  Ladue is absolutely gone and Stecher is probably 80%+ gone.  The rest of the blue has no business leaving just yet.  Given Poolman's age I could definitely see him thinking about leaving but there are aspects of his game that he can still improve.

Early in the year I would have said Schmaltz is 100% leaving, now I'm sitting at closer to 85% and that's only due to how much pressure he'll get from CHI to sign (their prospect pool is deleted due to all the trades they've been making).  As it stands today, I think Schmaltz should probably stay and continue to develop.  He's gotten a lot better since his freshman year but there are still aspects of his game that he must work on to become an NHL player.  Now he could do that in the AHL as well but I would be shocked if he wouldn't want to compete for a natty or HB (especially given his young age, there should be no rush).  If he left after this year, he would almost certainly spend at least a year in the A, which I guess is not that bad but playing through a junior year at UND has its perks as well.

I'm hopeful Nick sticks around.  Jordan stayed three years, so there is that precedent.  Reading between the lines regarding Senior night, one got the feeling that Jordan really missed his time and teammates at UND.  Hopefully that's the case and his brother has gotten the message.  Nick has to like the prospects of playing with Boeser one more year, assuming Brock stays.

Minnesota could win the regular season Championship and miss the playoffs!!  HA!!  Doesn't get much better than that!  Yeah Big 10!!

That would be the Daily Double for Lucia.  He accomplished that feat in the 1993-94 season, IIRC, while the head coach at CC.  Pretty tough to do once, let alone twice, if you're not coaching in the CHA or AHA.  But keep in mind he was looking at the same scenario last year before MN won the B1G tourney.  Winning two games in St. Paul against a very average OSU squad and then either PSU or Michigan isn't exactly climbing Everest.

Neither one are very entertaining to follow at the moment. Better chance of making the postseason, Wild or Gophers?

Even if it's a pro sports city, 3 million people and they can't sell out the self-appointed "Mecca of hockey" toilet bowl with 10k?

Since technically the B1G tournament is the post-season, and all 6 teams get to participate, I'm going with the Gophers.

Ok the last championship UND won has a similar record to this year at the halfway point (but parity)

But what did 1997 look like at the half way point?

People are getting way, way ahead of themselves here with this banner talk.  As a reminder, in 2002-03 we were sitting at something like 18-1-1 at this point in the season and ended up getting bounced in the first round of the NCAA's, unceremoniously.  Like this year, our first half of 2002-03 was filled with a cupcake schedule of the likes of Canisius (3 games), Brown, Princeton, Yale, BSU, and Niagara.

I'm as happy as anyone about our start.  We have a terrific defensive group.  Our goaltending has been better than expected, and we have a very good top line.  But we also have some questions this team has yet to answer.

Can anyone other than the top line score?  At what point, if any, does Cam Johnson tire having played virtually no hockey in the year before?  How far can a team go with very average special teams play?

We have played exactly two games against a decent team this year.  We ground out one win and got slaughtered in the other game.  We're going to get just four more tough games before tournament time.  Let's see how we do against UNO.  If we can play them like we did UMD, then maybe we have something cooking.

  14. Has anyone else considered the possibility that we might have three different goaltenders play 10 games this year?

I mean, it's not outside the realm of possibility.  Hrynkiw has already played 10.  Johnson has played 3, and Tomek is supposed to be the guy when he's healthy.  We're getting into the part of the schedule where we're playing some better teams.  If Hrynkiw struggles, I suspect Johnson will see the ice again at least until Tomek has had a chance to get a feel for the college game.  I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see Tomek until the UAH game and the Under-18 exhibition, just to let him get up to game speed against lesser competition or in an exhibition game.

I'm not sure I've ever heard of a college team who had three goaltenders who each played 10 games in a year, although it's probably happened.

  15. I get what you are saying but I absolutely hate the term "trap game". In fact they did a study on it disproving the theory there was such a thing. I see no letdown from last weekends sweep vs CC as we didnt even play that well Saturday, and I dont think they are looking ahead to Miami at this point. Perhaps we just suck and get beat but certainly not a trap of any sorts. Sorry for the rant just hate the term and its so called definition.

    Trap game.

Anyway, I support Roughriders 100% and I encourage everyone reading this to think about the future of UND and that this vote could very well determine which name we are stuck with (for better or worse) for the rest of our lifetimes and beyond.

This seems a little overly dramatic.

There is a reason that only about a fourth of the eligible voters actually voted the first time around, and probably fewer the next.  There's a reason you can go online and for a few bucks buy a vote.  There's a reason why no matter what name is selected, it will be fine with me.

It doesn't really matter.  It's a nickname.  UND is going to do quite nicely no matter what name is selected.  I think I can say with 100% certainty this will be the most insignificant vote(s) any of you will ever cast, outside of your vote for 7th grade class president.

  17. Honestly, I think this sets up as a trap game for us this weekend, especially Friday.  Wisconsin has nothing to lose.  First time in a long time they'll play in front of anything resembling a decent crowd.

I'm a little worried that our extraordinarily weak schedule to date has created a bit of a paper tiger.  Our defensemen are going to have to be especially good, not only in their own zone, but offensively as well, methinks.
