  1. Well they do show the Ralph, clips of hockey games, and the Sioux nickname was the name for all athletic teams of UND.
I'm a fan of the hockey team, have been for the better part of 35 years (I'm now 41) so I have nothing against the hockey program.  I just think this documentary may gain more support if it featured more than just hockey fans/REA.  Granted I don't know what else will be in the film, but the short clip certainly focused on REA/Hockey...just saying.

Yeah I understand what you are saying. My point is that the focus of the film isn't how it affected any particular sport, it is about the fight to keep it and the fight to get rid of it. Of course you are going to see the Ralph and hockey more being it is the premier sport of the university. I love all of UND athletics as well, but I think it is irrelevant to the documentary to feature all sports when the documentary is about the logo that represented the teams not the teams themselves.

  2. Meet and Greet Scheduled with Fighting Sioux Artist

Bennett Brien visits Grand Forks to promote funding for feature film

BISMARCK—The artist and creator of the now-retired Fighting Sioux logo, Bennett Brien, will appear at the Alerius Center in Grand Forks this Friday, December 11th from 4 to 7 pm, to meet with the public and help promote the upcoming film, “UNAUTHORIZED! The Story of the Fighting Sioux.”

This event is free and open to the public.

“UNAUTHORIZED!” is a documentary that tells the story of University of North Dakota's controversial athletics icon through one-on-one interviews with fans, tribal leaders, students, bloggers, reporters, politicians, and super fans.

Brien, who is a Native American artist from the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa Indians, will meet and take pictures with attendees, while the film's director, Matt Fern, will answer questions and show clips from the film.

Fern and his team have already shot much of the film; however, they are seeking investment via Kickstarter to capture additional footage, finalize edits and license music.

Kickstarter is a website used by artists and entrepreneurs to fund projects such as this through small private donations from the public.

Supporters for this campaign receive copies of the film, hand-drawn art from Brien and other premiums, depending on their donation.

To attend, visit the Alerius Center, Room 5, this Friday, December 11th from 4 to 7 pm next to Entrance 7. To learn more and participate in the Kickstarter campaign, visit www.FightingSiouxMovie.com.

Matt, have you sent this release to the Fargo Forum, Grand Forks Herald, Minot Daily?

  3. @beersong is a real a**hole as well... For years at the Final Five I had a large group of Duluth fans sitting behind me on the eastside upper deck. These guys all wore the same tees that said F**k Sioux Sioux and were chanting racist stuff the entire tournament. Really brought my respect for the Duluth fanbase down as well. I know not every Duluth fan is like this but these guys made me sick.

  4. I think he got sick and tired of the lack of support for the FB program by the Administration. Also, the Athletic Department was in total chaos at the time and he didn't want to work under those conditions. The blame lies with UND's lack of support for FB, not Lennon.

    EXACTLY.

  5. He didn't bail on us... He won't come back to UND either. He left because the administration at the time wasn't willing to get behind a full-on move to Division One. They wanted to do it half-assed and that is what we got... Dale is a great guy and a true Fighting Sioux.

  6. I think I'd take the best logo available at this point, to help salvage a weak nickname.  It would be fun if Bennett Brien ended up providing something great, but if the best logo comes from a designer in New York, Bratislava, etc., I'm still all for using it.

I have never seen anything bad come out of Bennett Briens art.

  7. We all remember when Kelley decided to have 3 names advance to the runoff and he said that the winner of that would be the nickname.  The majority thought this was a horrible idea because the winner was sure to not have 50% of the vote.  So what did we do?  We emailed the people who make the decisions, voiced our concerns, and ultimately the process was changed to ensure a majority of at least 50% was required to select a new name.

This issue required the same response.  We do not need some outside firm from New York designing the new Fighting Hawks logo.  There are plenty of local people with local ties to the University and the state that can come up with something that will be far superior to what a design firm out wast could come up with.  Like I have said before, the last local guy with ties to the University designed a pretty good logo last time!!

So voice your concerns to the appropriate people.  You want to make a change in the process and make your voices heard?  Contact the people who have a say in the matter.  Let them know how UND's stakeholders feel.  Give them a change to hear and possibly change their mind on the process  It worked before, it can work again.

As always, be respectful in your emails.

    EXACTLY. LETTER SENT.

  8. As in Kelley actually said this or that there is a full blown marketing process that needs to be completed as part of the new rebranding and Ben Brien is more than welcome to have his chance to provide input along with other people? This is more than just a single logo, though that will be a big part of it.

Did you not watch the press conference?

  9. This is going to be such a historic series; Hawks versus Hawks this weekend.  Everyone cheering for the Hawks to score on the Hawks, checking the Hawks off the puck, clearing the puck out of the Hawk's zone during a Hawk's power play or penalty kill.  Can it get anymore awesome than that?  This will be the most politically correctly cheered game in the history of North Dakota Hockey, and we have to look forward to these kind of games from here on out.  Let's Go Hawks ! Let's go Hawks!

    /s

    Gross.

  10. This is awful... If we become the Fighting Hawks and look back at the set of criteria that was supposed to shape the new nickname, you couldn't  match any of them up to this name. I'll support the teams but I'll call them what they are... Fighting Sioux.
