  1. Of all the drugs that are available for our consumption, alcohol is far and away the most abused by Native Americans. Why? There is research which suggests native americans are more suseptible to become alcoholics because of genetics. Another reason: my grandmother used to tell me of the trading post in Ft Tooten when she was a girl. They would sell the basic neccessities at inflated prices yet sell large quantities of liquor for pennies. The philosophy was keep the indians drunk and they wont cause any problems. Thats why the stereotype of the drunk indian us so hurtful.

  2. The sad thing about this is the will of a majority of Native Americans living in North Dakota was thwarted (fourwindsboy, you are in the minority here); a logo and nickname that actually brought visibility, honor and respect to the Sioux will now vanish, and there will be a backlash against the Tribes all because leaders from Standing Rock wouldn't allow their members a vote. You should be proud of your "victory."

If there is backlash then it will prove my point and further show the need for the name to be dropped.

  3. Hey Archie, why don't you and your followers put all your time and energy into trying to solve some of the social problems on the SRT? You should be ashamed of yourselves! Theres more important issues for you to concentrate on. I applaud the SRT tribal council. Time to move on!!!

  4. Kelley and Faison (even though he is a "nice" guy) may have just become the most despised President and AD in UND history.

Loved how Kelley talked in his on-campus forum about how the Board "felt" this and Board "felt" that.

All for a six month jump on the Summit league?

They had better have more answers than that. Does the NCAA have a vendetta against us? Is that the reason?

Or how this is such an important civil rights issue that Standing Rock must be denied a voice?

Or that somehow "divisive" issues are not to be tolerated? How tolerant!

Could anyone imagine what kind of reception those two will receive if and when the Sioux nickname is retired?

    I'm writing some more letters.

Your saying that the NA's on the SRN had thier civil rights denied because of this issue? Thats an insult to all NA's! NA's have been the victims of horrible, atrocious civil rights abuses since 1492 and you dare to put this in that category? Shame on you. You need to take a step back and reevaluate this whole issue.

I could give a rats a$$ if you come to the casino or not. I have a Masters Degree, my wife and I have darn good jobs and I rely on the casino for nothing! Thanks for asking though. :silly::huh::D

  7. So FWB tell me how this change has impacted your life? Do you feel more respected? Do you feel like you got one up on "the man"? Just curious. You have waited so long for this and now the time has come you must be profoundly changed. UND no longer has a proud sioux mascot and I am sure this makes your life so much better.

Let's see, yes, yes and hell yes!!

  8. For the record, I don't care either way the vote goes just as long as the vote occurs.

    You see, democracy is amazing.

First of all, it works (which is more that can be said for such forms of government as dictatorship (this works, but only as long as the dictator remains in absolute control), communism, socialism, fascism, and anarchy).

Second, the process is beautiful. No one is truly happy in the process but it doesn't matter. Discontent breeds methodology. IF you don't like it, vote against it. If your efforts fail, organize a new effort to vote it down. If that continues to fail, then you'll have to find a way to survive without it.

I cannot stand the state of government in the US right now. I could go into reasons why but it doesn't matter. I voted, I spoke my mind through voting. The results didn't work in my favor this time around. Oh well. That's how it goes. I hope people who have my same or similar political philosophy organize an effort to oppose the current elected officials in the next elections and the results go in favor of my beliefs. If they again don't, then I'll learn to survive until they do (and at this rate, I'm not so positive my fellow believers have their eggs in one basket).

In any case, I find those who oppose democracy rather sad individuals who really need to get to parts of the world where it doesn't exist. Then, when they live without it, when their voice isn't heard or if it is heard, it could lead to serious trouble (imprisonment or worse), they come back here and realize "Hey! This place does have problems, but it is a great place and I can live with it if things don't go my way!"

Now, I say that having NOT lived in that situation, so I admit that it is a tad biased. However, I don't need to because I believe in the system win or lose.

I agree 100% with your words about democracy and I have voted many times and my guy or issue didn't pass and I have lived with it, also, big deal. This issue is different because we are asking a viable government to vote ON A NICKNAME!! Not a person for office or an issue that will have an economic or cultural impact. A NICKNAME!!! Are you kidding me! Can someone give me an example of this that has happened somewhere in the US? I think they SBofHE and the NCAA are making us look like idiots, pawns, chess peices in a stupid game and a significant number of NA's are letting them do it! That just eats me to the core. Come people of the SLT and the SRT, we're better than that!

  9. Here's more food for thought:

Say Ron loses, the new guy puts it to a vote, and the tribe approves it.

Nickname opponents will cite this development as the closest they've gotten to victory since the nickname's adoption and use that to spur them on.

I would not hold it to the more extreme of the anti-nickname crowd to try to egg on negative stories and acts to try to renew the push to change the name even hours after we win the right to keep it.

I'm not saying that it is the fight not worth fighting, but I think both directions can have distinct advantages. I'd love to keep the nickname. I'd love to drive the tribes out of UND's hair forever.

But the one factor will always remain: Even if the nickname goes away, the voices that led this whole thing, those UND employees who spoke out about how awful the nickname was and how horrible it is to work for UND, will just find a new flag to wave against the institution. This kind of power isn't the kind that comes and, upon success, goes away moving towards equality. The taste of it is good to these people and they want more. They equate this power to the fight for equality and not for what it really is: Simply the successful pushing around of the majority for the purposes of supposedly furthering their agenda.

The problem isn't the nickname. It's these leaders who traipse about stirring up unrest and creating a sense of inequality instead of empowering the people they lead towards changing their life for the better. The nickname isn't going to better the cause or lessen the plight of the Sioux people, but their anti-nickname leaders believe that it will at least be a step in that direction. News for them is that it won't. It will simply lead to some rough times for Sioux UND students (because lets face it: Like it or not, someone is going to do something incredibly stupid. Alcohol will probably be involved. And I'll cringe when I hear about it) and then fade into obscurity.

I hate to burst your bubble but it doesn't matter what the outcome of the election is at SR or the vote at SLT, the nickname is still going to be changed! This issue is never going to die. Us nickname opponents did not make an agreement with the NCAA or whore ourselves out like some of the name supporters on the SLT with cash and/or gifts from the Englestads. And it just sickens me that the people of the SRT are going to elect a chairman based on a nickname! WOW! The repurcussions from this could be serious for the people of SR. Also, I had a feeling that the SL tribal council would allow the vote but I can't for the life of me see them giving a 30 year agreement. The talk in the community is that they won't.

  10. Why try to engage in discussion someone that is on record as stating that the principle reason he wants the name changed is to "stick it to whitey"? He isn't worth it.

No, no, no, that isn't the principal reason why I want to see the name changed. The main reason, and I have stated this in earlier posts, is because of the way I was treated as an undergrad at UND. I have gone into detail in earlier posts so I won't now, but basically, UND says it is honoring the Sioux people by using the name, yet I felt anything but honored when I went to school their. After I graduated I had a bad taste in my mouth overall and that is how I arrived at my current stance. But I did make that statement although I don't think those aren't the exact words I used but I could be wrong.

  11. I can't let you play this one both ways:

You can't claim this impacts the Sioux people's culture (name does harm to Sioux people is claim) and yet claim it shouldn't have been put to a vote.

Pick one and stick to it please.

Where do I say it has an impact?? Another thing you people don't realize is that the vote among the council was 3-2 in favor of voting but from what I hear it was very close to being 3-2 in favor of not voting. And to dmksioux, i'll say it again, this has nothing to do with the rituals, ceremonies and language of my people. For you to suggest that it does is an insult. A good rule of thumb is that if Dakota Culture and Wasicu's(white's) are in the same sentence, then it has zero to do with our culture. By the way, we don't do a dance before every athletic event.

  12. As an enrolled member of the SLT, I feel this isssue should not have been voted on by the tribal members. Our constitution says that only issues that have a direct economic, financial or cultural impact on our people can be put to a vote. No, this issue has nothing to do with our traditions and sacred rituals. All it has done is create divisivness on our rez. Our tribal council did a poor job of interpreting our constitution. This whole voting issue would be analogous to the Miller Brewing Company approaching our tribe and wanting us to vote for "taste great" or "less filling". I applaud Ron HHT and the Standing Rock Tribal Council for not voting on this fiasco.

  13. Listen, all I'm saying is that if the few who wan the the nickname gone want it gone, well farewell. I've always liked the nickname and supported it, but now its out of our hands. Things are the way they are, I said in an earlier post, its not the name that carries the tradition its the people who come through the university and the people who support our academics and athletics. Are you saying you won't support the university as much just because we're not the Sioux anymore? Just because we're not the Sioux anymore doesn't mean our football team isn't as good or our basketball still won't continue their success. It's just a name, I think a lot of people have lost sight of that, if they want the name gone let them have it. Since we're not the Sioux anymore should they still get their tuition help, in my opinion.... NO. It goes both ways. With all that being said there is still a small chance that it will be kept, but that's not likely.

See this is the kind of BS that put me on the side of getting rid of the name/logo. Native don't get free tuition or help with tuition anymore than a southeast asian, black or any other minority. Look at the stats, only a small portion of the cultural diversity waivers go to NA's.

  14. I read in the Herald today that a Lakota band from SD was scheduled to play at the Fritz but cancelled due to lack of ticket sales. Huh? So many peolple on this site have said they would like to educate themselves more about Dakota/Lakota culture and a native entertainment group comes to GF and no one wants to see them! Just goes to prove my point that 99% of name supporters don't give a damn about NA's or Native culture. And you all know thats the truth. All they are concerned about is thier precious logo/nickname. People of Standing Rock, take note of this. Me and my family were in GF today and we were in Target shopping. When we got to the checkout we were the 3rd in line. The check out girl was this bubbly person who struck up a conversation with the 2 customers ahead of us, both caucasions. When it was our turn all she said was "hi" and "did you find everything". That was it. Thats how it is for Natives in towns like DL and GF. You stay classy GF!!
