  1. I heard that the Oct. 18th game against Western Washington will be UND's homecoming. The Alerus Center calendar of events seems to be confiming that.

While the schedule doesn't seem to be shaping up too bad, I would have preferred not to see a DIII on there. Hopefully they are able to offset it with another DI home game.

So is Idaho State the only home/home we have scheduled for next year besides the Great West games? The one thing I do expect to see out of the transition is an increasingly better schedule each year. The first year or two is the time to start getting some home/home and 2/1s in place. SDSU did a great job of that and with their addition to the Gateway has their schedules pretty much done for quite a few years.

As a fan you never want to see your team schedule down a division or in this case two divisions, but Wisconsin-La Crosse is a good DIII team. In 2006 they beat a good 7-4 SDSU team. At least when UND is forced to schedule down in the transition they are scheduling good teams that can at least make a game of it.

  2. Home:

    Western Washington

Wisconsin La Crosse - D3 (Good Program)

    Southern Utah

    Texas AM Kingsville

    St Cloud

    Away:

    Idaho State

    Southern Illinois

    SE Lousiana State

    South Dakota

    Cal Davis

Open dates Oct 4th and 11th

    Rumor has it......

Should be released soon not sure of dates, be nice to get that 11th game, but I know they do not want to play anymore D2 or lower.... Great job for the 1st year schedule if this is correct... without any AD or Adminstration help or connections....

Looks like a good first schedule. Next year it will be a lot easier when UND counts as a FCS game.

Just a heads up, UC Davis fans hate to be called Cal Davis.

  3. I don't think people realize how hard 'Year One' is to put together a schedule. It is 100% impossible to put together a solid FCS schedule in the first year of the transition. Just the way it is setup.

    1. UND is a non-counter. Meaning, by playing them that game does not count towards the other teams playoff criteria. That is a

huge red flag for all teams that will even go .500 and have a glimmer of hope to make the playoffs.

    2. Most of the .500 or better teams that did have openings told us No because they didn

  4. This thread from the USD board indicates that the UND-USD game will be in Vermillion. I can't find any confirmation anywhere, but I'd say that it is quite possible.

If that schedule is accurate, I really really like ours so far. USD apparently has 2 NAIA's, 2 DII's, and UND for their home schedule. :whistling:

USD does not have a very attractive home schedule, but their away schedule looks good. USD will travel to Northern Iowa, SE Louisiana, Montana State, Cal Poly and Southern Utah in 2008.

  5. Cal Poly home games:

    Montana

    University of South Dakota

    Southern Utah

    Idaho State

    UC Davis

??? Signed but I am not sure who

    Cal Poly road games:

    San Diego State

    McNeese State

    Northwestern State

    South Dakota State

    University of Wisconsin

Looking for a 12th game against a FCS team. Said they hope to firm up a 12th game and release the schedule in the next couple of weeks.

  6. It would only make sense to spread the scholarship money over players in all five yrs. If you are going to give say 40 full-rides. I would think the smart thing to do would be to distribute them relatively equally over the five year groups. That way the graduating class would surrender enough to entice enough talent during the next recruiting year. I remember one of the staff telling me that in order for UND to be able to schedule FBS teams starting in 2010 they would have to maintain at least 52+ scholarships in 2008 and 2009.

To count as a D-I game for an FBS team a FCS team must have a 57 scholarship average over the last two years.

  7. I am going to an event tonight that both Cal Poly's head football coach and AD will be at. I will try to see if a UND/Cal Poly game next year is still a possibility. I am would really like to see that game happen in 2008.

  8. Who are the other two teams that have inquired as to membership? Are they both West Coast schools? Just curious because you probably have some better sources of info out in California than we have here.

I am not sure. The GWFC said they could not say because they did not want to hurt the teams relationships with their current conferences.

Some have speculated that Sac State could join the GWFC and the Big West, but I think that Sac State is shooting for a move to the WAC somewhere down the road. They could save a ton on travel for their non revenue sports in the Big West (all California conference and all trips are bus trips) and they would be in the same conference as to of their rivals, UC Davis and Cal Poly.

I have also heard rumors that the University of the Pacific (Big West member located in Stockton) was considering bringing back football at the FCS level. They had a I-A program and dropped football. They have a 30,000 seat on campus stadium so start up cost would not be too bad.

There is also a push at Cal State Fullerton (also a Big West member who had dropped football) to bring back football. They also have a nice on campus stadium and would be a natural fit in the GWFC.

The last rumor that I have heard is that Eastern Washington wants to join the West Coast Conference (it the conference that Gonzaga is in and a natural rival for EWU). The West Coast Conference is a better basketball conference than the Big Sky and also sponsors baseball and softball. The West Coast Conference does not sponsor football so they would be a canidate for the GWFC. The thing with the West Coast Conference is it is made up of all private schools and they may not want a state school to join.

The University of San Diego would be my first choice. They have a good program and would just need to add scholarships. San Diego is a great city and I would love to travel there every other year to watch a game.

  9. It's more of a scheduling alliance than a conference. I really hope Poly is on the 2008 schedule.

In 2008 it looks more like a scheduling allliance seeing that UND may not play Cal Poly and USD will not play UC Davis. In 2009 it will be a conference when all teams will play each other. The players get to play for a championship, All-Conference teams, player of the week ect.... This is important for both UND and USD because they can not make the playoffs for a few years.

I am hoping that a few more teams will join the GWFC in the next few years. The other USD, the University of San Diego, is a leading canidate to join and there has been two other teams that have inquired. Let's keep our fingers crossed.

  10. It's interesting that another former NCC coach--Beau Baldwin from Central Washington--just took the head coaching job at Eastern Washington, which like SIU was a FCS playoff team this past year. However, he'll "only" be making $100k, which is half of what Lennon is getting at SIU, and less than what Lennon was making at UND in dII (at least in terms of base salary).

Had EWU been able to pay more they would of hired former player and Fresno State Offensive Coordinator Jim McElwain who was the first choice. $100k will be a pay raise for Baldwin, but would have been a pay cut for McElwain. EWU has one of the smallest budget in the Big Sky.

  11. I wish UND would have expanded their search like NDSU did. I think UND screwed up by hiring Mussman so soon. Maybe he is the right guy for the job but it wouldn't have hurt to bring in few other candidates.

Just because they did not open it up officially to outside canidates, I am sure they had coaches who were interested inquire about the job so they had a good idea who was out there. I think that in Mussman they saw a rising star who was ready for the next step. I think he is a great hire and he is hitting the ground running.

  12. I think that Mussman is the right choice for this particular situation. He has been a coordinator for a long time now (first at Mankato). I don't think we would have won a national championship in 2001 if he hadn't taken over the offense that season. He knows the program, players, systems and philosophies as well as Lennon. He has patiently paid his dues, done his job well and deserves a chance at running his own show for a change. The sooner we hire him, the sooner he can get his staff set up how he wants it, reassure the incoming recruits that no drastic changes are going to happen and prepare for our first season as a DI FCS program.

    I agree.

  13. That isn't even the point. What about the other three? If the 4-3 defense is all the rage, why didn't he make him change?

Minnesota still has one of the best run defenses in the NFL, so what's your point?

That "DC" in Pitt is LeBeau, who happens to be considered one of the greatest defensive minds of all-time.

Just admit you were trolling, and have no basis for what you said.

The 34 is a great defense if you have a great nose gaurd. It all starts there. Cal Poly runs with three d-linemen a lot, and with the exception of last year (they were very young with 6 new starters and they also lost their stud NG in the first game) they are usually one of the top defenses in the FCS/I-AA.

I am hoping to hear that UND has hired a coach by the end of the week so they do not lose any momentum in recruiting. Good luck. I am pulling for Mussman. He seems to be a coach that can continue the momentum that Lennon has started.
