  1. SDSUFAN: 1. Please stop making SDSU grads look like morons. Thank you. 2. How much money you give to SDSU and the year I graduated have nothing to do with what's being discussed here. 3. As another poster pointed out, you are clueless -- totally. What I don't need is a holier-than-thou clueless person lecturing me about what's happening at UND and in Grand Forks. Now, I could spend my precious time pointing out all the lies, distortions and inaccuracies in your posts, but it's much more entertaining to watch you make a fool of yourself. 4. If you don't like the color of Ralph's money, I suggest that you direct your whining to Daktronics, a company in Brookings founded and run by SDSU grads, that obviously has no problem taking millions of dollars from Ralph Engelstad and the taxpayers of Grand Forks. Let's just call it UND's contribution to the Brookings economic development fund. 5. I played hockey while I attended SDSU. The students and faculty members I played with loved the game. But certainly it's much easier to trash a sport you don't understand than it is to actually learn something about it. 6. I've never had an alcoholic beverage in the Engelstad Arena. 7. The Ram Pub does have good food. That's one thing on which we can agree.
  2. What it comes down to is that you don't like hockey as a sport. And you're right, your question was clueless, so I'm not going to waste my time answering it.
  3. I never said anything about your grammar. I said your sentences weren't coherent. But because you seem to be doing a bit better in that department now, perhaps you could work on your reading comprehension skills.
  4. SDSUFAN, seriously, check out the decaf brands. I hope that you're just a fan of SDSU and not a graduate because I would like to think that an alumnus of my alma mater could A) come up with an intelligent argument based on facts and B) write a coherent sentence. Next time, try to avoid posting the morning after you closed down the Ram Pub.
  5. I thought it was interesting that after the Niagara game Saturday night, Blais said that the low number of shots on goal the Sioux goalies were seeing actually works against them. He said most goalies like to see 10 shots a period to stay involved in the game. But he also said the Sioux will be in games where the goalies see 30-40 shots a game.
  6. SDSUFAN -- and I am only saying that because I care -- there's a lot of decaffeinated brands on the market that are just as tasty as the real thing. You aren't doing your university or its president any favors by posting here and putting your ignorance on public display. Perhaps you should follow the example of SDSU President Miller and "spend a few bucks" to read up on UND. SDSU's new motto: Our goal is to suck at a higher level.
  7. I'm now officially embarrassed to admit that I'm an SDSU grad. But now that SDSUFAN mentions it, I think I did hear Dean Blais say something about holding a car wash and bake sale to buy some new pucks.
  8. Heck, I'm wondering where the fans were for the Niagara series. Sure, Niagara isn't a powerhouse and is a non-conference opponent, but you'd think the REA would be packed just to see Parise. Saturday was better than Friday, but there were still a lot of empty seats.
  9. Let's be realistic here. The Sioux fans are knowledgeable enough that they're not going to boo a young team that's down two goals in the first period during the first home game of the season. The team hadn't played that badly and there was still plenty of time left to come back. I saw games last season during which the Sioux played much worse and nobody booed them then. Why would anyone boo them last night? It doesn't make sense.
  10. I can assure you that it was not the case. The officials leave the ice through an exit surrounded by the student section. As they were going off, I could see students above the exit verbally abusing the officials. I believe that triggered a reaction from the crowd to join in. In fact, I think the Sioux players were well on their way to the locker room by the time the serious booing started, which makes me wonder if they even heard any of it.
  11. All this seems a bit strange because from up in the press box, I never had any doubt that the fans were booing the officials rather than the players. By the way, I met Mr. and Mrs. "Sockeye Sioux" and their son between the first and second periods. What wonderful people and great Sioux fans! Brian will probably play Saturday night, although his shoulder still isn't 100 percent.
  12. Are you looking in a mirror?
  13. Thank you for dropping by, Dr. Yeagley. I'm a fan of your columns and I am honored that you have taken the time to visit this forum and post here. I look forward to reading more of your thoughts on the Sioux name issue.
  14. That's amazing. I've never known the Sicatoka to miss an opportunity to spread some fertilizer.
  15. Gotta be careful when the spelling police are about.
  16. Thanks, forecheck. I wasn't able to listen tonight, so I appreciate your summary of the show.

Nah, Doug Woog still owns that title.

If you pass the puck into your own empty net on a delayed penalty, it counts as a goal for the other team. In other words, the other team can't score a goal on you, but you can score a goal on yourself.

I believe you're right that it was Matt Jones who caught up with the puck just before it went into the empty Sioux goal. He then passed it to Connelly who passed it to Genoway who scored the goal on the bad Manitoba line change. Edit: I suspect the reason that the Sioux caught Manitoba on the bad line change was because the Bison thought the puck was going to slide all the way down to the other end of the ice. But when it became apparent that the puck was headed for UND's goal, Jones sped up to catch it, then alertly passed it up ice to Connelly who fed it to Genoway for the score.

Here's how I remember Hale's goal: Notermann and Hale broke into the Bison zone 2-on-2. Notermann carried the puck in on the goalie's right, put on a burst of speed and got around the defenseman. The goalie did a nice job of cutting down the angle, which gave Jason little to shoot at. Hale was going hard to the net on the goalie's left with the other Bison defender ragging him. Notermann uncranked a hard, low shot. (Perhaps it was Notermann who had the "full wind up.") It sounded like the puck hit the goalie's stick before rebounding at an angle off to the left. At that point, it was a race to the loose puck. I assume the defender realized that if Hale got there first, he'd have a wide open net to shoot at. Hale got his stick on the puck and shot it in for the goal just as he was being hauled down by the Manitoba player. From where I was sitting, I had a very good view of Hale's goal, although my view of Notermann's shot was somewhat obstructed. Hale showed excellent hustle on the play and got off a nice shot under pressure. Perhaps saying that Hale "stuffed in the rebound" understated his effort, but I don't always try to describe every goal in great detail.

That's not what I saw, nor is it what my notes say. But, whatever...
  22. I'm curious, JBB: Exactly how much time do you spend on the UND campus? How do you come by your knowledge of the "racial and cultural issues that embroil the entire campus culture?" I dare say that I'm far closer to the situation than you could ever hope to be. And yet, to me, your words are completely disconnected from the reality. Why is that?

I just submitted my game recap to USCHO, so I can now take a few minutes to post my impressions of the game here. First, let me say that dagies looks very familiar, although I can't quite recall where I've seen him before. Second, Speez is darn fast for an old fart. UND Goal 1: Power play by Parise. Great cross-ice pass from Lundbohm to Parise for the one-timer. Important safety tip: Nobody should leave young Zach all alone on the power play. UND Goal 2: Massen gets a good pass from Palmiscno to break in one-on-one. He powers through the defenseman and flips in a nice backhander. This was a great example of how Massen should be using his size and strength. UND Goal 3: As Blais said, this was almost a carbon copy of the goal Michigan scored on UND during a bad line change. There was a delayed penalty on the Bison and all the Manitoba players came off at once, enabling Genoway to skate in unopposed. He made a nice deek and flipped in the backhander. UND Goal 4: On a Sioux power play, Jason Noternann used his speed to get around the defense and put a hard, low shot on goal. Ryan Hale was in position to jam in the rebound, despite having a defenseman hauling him down. Manitoba Goal 1: With a 4-0 lead, the Sioux were a bit lethargic to start the last period. Siembida was screened when the Bison defenseman shot from the point and probably never saw the puck. Blais didn't seem to think that Josh had any real chance to make the save. UND Goal 5: Bochenski atones for his unforgivable give-away in his own zone while the Sioux are on the power play by going nearly coast-to-coast and scoring unassisted 4-on-4. I thought it was a soft goal, but it was fun to watch. UND Goal 6: Massen exhibits very quick hands and the advantage of his long reach when Palmiscno passes to him from behind the net. From a sharp angle, he put the puck into the top corner in the blink of an eye. Offense: Aside from the let-down early in the third period, the Sioux forwards dominated the play, often controlling the puck in Manitoba's zone for long stretches -- and it wasn't just the Parise line. The Sioux definitely did not look like a one-line team. Blais was very happy with Genoway's and Massen's performances. (By the way, I'm told that Geonoway is pronounced with a hard G.) Blais, as usual, mixed the line combos quite a bit. Officially, the lines were: 1. Spiewak, Lundbohm, Genoway 2. Bochenski, Parise, Fylling 3. Notermann, McMahon, R. Hale 4. Palmiscno, Connelly, Massen Defense: Once again, the opposition had difficluty getting shots on goal, even though Matt Greene did not play. Blais credited that to good team defense and the forwards doing a good job of back checking. Lee Marvin had a couple of big hits and looked solid. Leinweber's experience shows. I thought he played a smart game. The defensive pairings were: 1. Schneider, D. Hale 2. Jones, Fuher 3. Marvin, Leinweber Goal tending: If you read my USCHO game recap, you'll see that Blais said that he wanted Siembida in when the game was on the line. I took this to mean that he thinks Josh is most likely to emerge as the team's top goalie. He also said that he thought they could have won with either Brandt or Sofie in net for the final period. However, he gave full credit to Siembida for making a couple of big saves that could have changed the game's momentum if Manitoba had scored. Certainly the Sioux will face much more difficult opposition down the road, but I'm encouraged by the fact that this team -- so far -- is winning the games it should win by wide margins. That's the mark of a good team and something we didn't see often last season.

    Niagara Series

If Doug Woog can refer to the Purple Eagles as "Nigeria," I think we can cut Emily a little slack. What? It's Niagara, not Viagra? Never mind.
  25. JBB's MO: Deflect, spin, obfuscate, denigrate and hallucinate. Then, when all else fails, play the race card. In other words, he'll do anything but admit there's a possibility that NDSU and his beloved Bison and their fans are less than perfect. Rather than accept the possibility that NDSU fans might be responsible for unseemly behaviour, he'll even level totally groundless accusations that UND fans are actually to blame. My kids dream up more credible excuses than JBB. In JBB's mind, The Vast Fighting Sioux Conspiracy rolls on.
