  1. I realize that this isn't a story related the UND's use of the Sioux name, but it certainly makes you wonder how much the NCAA intends to involve itself in First Amendment issues. From The NCAA News: Study shows female faces lacking on sports pages
  2. Does this mean that UND will soon be known as Fork U?
  3. Great post, Mike. I totally agree, although you will probably be labeled a "hostile and abusive" racist for speaking the truth.
  4. KEV-INNNNN SPEEEEE-WAK!!!
  5. The point was to make a comparison between UND's logo and the use of commercially available mascots that actually do represent racist stereotypes and mock Indian culture. If this issue is so important to you, I would think that your time might be better spent on dealing with the schools, businesses and other institutions that actually use such mascots rather than UND, which has no mascot and uses a logo that presents the Sioux in a noble, dignified manner. As an aside, is it possible for you to make a post without insulting someone?
  6. *cough* Jeanotte *cough* Yellow Bird *cough*
  7. You're missing the point -- not that I'm surprised.
  8. I don't know the answer to that question, but in his open letter to the NCAA, he speaks of traveling to the reservations around the state. How often he does this, I can't say. I can, however, say that I did run into Kupchella once a few years ago while he was visiting the Turtle Mountain Reservation. EDIT: I was also told this past spring that Kupchella had lunch once a week at American Indian Student Services. I was invited to one of the lunches, but was unable to attend.
  9. So you're buying into my vision?
  10. It'd sure be nice if INCH could get through a UND-related article without taking some kind of shot at Grand Forks.
  11. Sept. 1, 2005 From the Mercury News: Wetherell wins fans in battle with NCAA over Seminoles nickname From The Chanticleer: Will JSU say "Bye-bye Cocky"? From The Kentucky Kernal: NCAA mascot ban an exercise in bogus multiculturalism From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune: James McKenzie: UND's hurtful use of nickname complex, unwise
  12. Umm....no comment.
  13. I'm glad to hear that you're doing okay. I certainly know what it's like to be without electricity for an extended period of time. But what Grand Forks went through in 1997 in no way compares to what Katrina did to your part of the world. I see the pictures and video, but I still have a hard time getting my mind around the magnitude of it all. Take care of yourself and your loved ones. You are in our thoughts and prayers.
  14. You'd look good in that. But these just have so much potential.
  15. One of these would be nice for UND's mascot from the standpoint that it'd drive a certain Gopher fan on USCHO right over the edge. I'm not sure about the Mad Log, though. It looks like my worst nightmare.
  16. See the mascot in the upper left corner? I'm not going to touch that one with a 10-foot pole.
  17. While some people are going ballistic over this... ...you can go online and order this and this. Dave the Brave? Wigwam Willie? Chief Abwatac? And is the Spokane Indians' mascot somebody's idea of being sensitive to Native Americans?
  18. From USA Today: North Dakota loses some Sioux's support
  19. Thanks for proving the point I tried to make earlier. At this time, there is no reason to further discuss this issue or attempt reach some sort of compromise. GrahamKracker and his friends, who represent a minority of a minority, have only one goal, and that's to rid UND of the Fighting Sioux nickname and logo.
  20. According to the 2000 census, North Dakota's American Indian population is just under 5 percent. Are you saying that only Sioux from North Dakota count?
  21. I'll really miss visiting with Scott up in the press box and hearing his booming voice doing player introdutions and announcing Fighting Sioux scoring. We were fortunate to have him for this long.
  22. From the Arkansas Times: ASU battles to save its Indian
  23. Exactly. Making a categorical statement of that nature would simply have invited someone to disprove it. Plus, what's the definition of a program "designed to support American Indian students"? Every university could define that differently and claim to have more programs than UND.
  24. Now that I've gone back and read the actual statment in question in UND's appeal, I see that there's a very good reason why the word "probably" was used.
