    The NCAA revealed

I'm only going from memory here, but as I recall, UND did make the effort to begin the cultural awareness classes. As I remember it, some of the anti-nickname faculty on campus objected to what was being taught. The whole thing seemed to come to a screeching halt because of that. It's possible that some of the tribal leaders recognize that UND made a good-faith effort in that direction. That's only speculation on my part, however.

    Not chronologically.

I only know what UND's administration has told me and said publicly. I haven't heard anyone from the NCAA deny it.

I don't know that it's so obvious. Most of the statements I've heard her make have been rather non-commital. I believe it was on WDAZ that I heard her say that the tribal elders favored UND's use of the Sioux name and logo. Perhaps she's tempering her statements out of respect for their wishes.

Well, I think Parise's one of the best Sioux goalies ever, but I wouldn't so far as to say that I love him.

Kupchella also said the following when I interviewed him for this June 21 USCHO article: The Spirit Lake Tribal Council has been to UND to meet with the administration about the NCAA policy. It's been lobbied by the NCAA and activists to rescind the December 2000 resolution. If Kupchella is mischaracterizing the council's position, they've certainly been awfully quiet about calling him on it.
  7. The flickertail or Mrs. Richardson's butterscotch-carmel ground squirrel or faux gopher or whatever the beast in our garage is will soon be gettintg a new address. I bought a live trap from Home of Economy. All we have to do is bait the trap, catch the little bugger and move him. I've even received expert advice on where it should be relocated to be with members of its own species. I'll post photos, assuming that nothing overly bloody happens.

    The NCAA revealed

Have you read all seven of the illinois.scout.com articles? I don't know how anyone with a serious interest in college athletics could read about how the NCAA has routinely abused its powers for decades and reach the conclusion that acquiescing to still more and even broader forms of abuse is a positive development for the association or its member institutions. While I know that's not what you're advocating, that's what it comes down to, which is why I find your willingness to defend the NCAA so puzzling.

I also learned not to sit within punching distance of Hockey Mom, which basically means that I can't go in the Ralph when she's there.

That's right. I bought the suit last week and sent it back to the 80s using Uncle Rico's time machine. In fact, if you look closely, you can see Rico in the picture holding a Bud Light.

    The NCAA revealed

In its various appeals, UND has quoted chapter and verse from the sections of the NCAA bylaws and constitution that it believes the Executive Committee violated. If I recall correctly, there's one section that specifically gives member institutions the autonomy to deal with discrimination. The NCAA is taking a member's money with the clear undertanding that it's not going to involve itself in a school's discrimination issues, then turning around and saying, "We changed our mind. We're now going to be a catalyst for social change, and it's potentially going to cost you millions. If you don't like it, leave." I'm sure that's part of what Kupchella referred to when he said, "The NCAA prides itself on being a bottom-up organization with a great deal of institutional autonomy. I think all the institutions that are members come to their relationship with the NCAA with that understanding. Whether they know it or not, this is a threat to all of us

It would actually make a good movie or TV mini-series.
  20. The Web site illinois.scout.com is running a fascinating 14-part series of articles on the University of Illinois' relationship with the NCAA entitled "Through the Trifocals: Illinois & the NCAA." There's a great deal of background information on how the associatin was formed, how it came to be run the way it is and how that continues to influence the NCAA's battle with UI over the university's use of the Chief Illinwek mascot. So far, seven of the 14 parts have been published. As additional parts are published, I'll post the links here. Here are the links to the articles published to date: http://illinois.scout.com/2/540965.html http://illinois.scout.com/2/541281.html http://illinois.scout.com/2/541615.html http://illinois.scout.com/2/542449.html http://illinois.scout.com/2/542999.html http://illinois.scout.com/2/542713.html http://illinois.scout.com/2/543341.html A couple of the quotes I found most interesting are:

  23. I don't see it, either, because I'm not around him. However, the subject continues to come up among those who are paid to know such things. It's certainly possible that the criticism of his attitude is unfair and undeserved. As Pierre McGuire said, the motivation to prove people wrong might be just what he needs to become a successful player in the NHL. I, for one, hope that he does prove everyone wrong. I like to see college players, particularly those from the WCHA, do well in the pro ranks. Kessel also has the tools to bring a lot of excitement to the game, and that's good for hockey overall.

And we can send Myles Brand a nice "thank you" note.
