  1. I am in no way advocating for SCSU to be in the NCHC when I post this, but I found it interesting none the less. I have heard that SCSU plans to upgrade their arena. I'm not sure if the work has been approved or if plans are finalzed for the upgrade. I was looking through the JLG website and came across some renderings of upgrades to their arena. Again, not sure if they are doing this, but if so, there arena is going to be pretty nice.

http://www.jlgarchitects.com/ Click on "The Work" tab, then "Hockey/Sports" tab, and then National Hockey Center to see the photos.

Contractors had their insurance policies and permits in hand. Because of the state shutdown, the work has been delayed one year. Phase one consists of the exterior work. Phase two will be the addition of suites and the north end seating. When completed in 2013, the building will have 20-30 luxury suites and additional seats. The entrance, ticketing, administration, pro shop, concourse, restroom and concession areas will be upgraded. In its concert configuration, the facility will hold about 8,000. http://www.stcloudstate.edu/athletics/sports/hockey-mens/aplanforthefuture-thenationalhockeycenter.asp

  2. UND's fan base is bad, are you kidding me. The Sioux faithful are the best fans in college hockey!!! THere is no denying it. They travel the best and they treat fans the best in their home arena. I have been to St. Cloud for games and never surprised by the fans, from the jack wagons outside telling me I am a racist to the a-holes inside that are just plain rude. If you want to find bad fans I suggest you look at UMTC or Michigan(by far the worst fans).

UND fans travel the best, but they are far from being the most cordial to visiting fans. Your problem is that your "bad fans" are REALLY bad.

And get over the 20 protestors that would come protest UND's nickname.

  3. two entirely different situations, but yes, i'm sure that's a conservative estimate... losing top recruits to the candian junior leagues is defiantely bad for college hockey (especially ones who have already committed to a school)... the conference shakeup, possibly bad for college hockey, but it will be a few years before we know the fallout for sure. time will tell.

I know...my comment was somewhat tongue in cheek.

  4. i wish no ill will on the kid, but im pretty sure he just lost tens of thousands of supporters... this kind of stuff stinks when it happens to anyone, even worse when its your own team. i said it back during the okposo ordeal, just bad for college hockey in general.

"Bad for college hockey"...I've heard that phrase at least 100x this week ;)

  5. The CCHA would have to get some AHA teams to move over to survive if both NMU and UAF are moving to the WCHA:

    Bowling Green

    Ferris State

    Lake Sup State

    +Robert Morris

    +Mercyhurst

    +Niagara

    +UAH

    maybe W Mich

    maybe Lindenwood

    WCHA:

    Mich Tech

    N Mich

    SCSU

    Mankato

    Bemidji

    Anchorage

    Fairbanks

    maybe Moorhead

Moorhead? Do you really think they could start a DI hockey program?

  6. So you have never noticed the protests at your barn when UND comes to town? You never noticed that SCSU never refers to UND as the Sioux during their broadcasts? You guys have a long history of trying to damage UND over the Fighting Sioux nickname, and although I am sure there are SCSU fans who have no problem with the Sioux name I haven't seen pressure by the fans to encourage the SCSU administration to stay out of it.

I've seen the 20 or so protestors. Big numbers!

  7. Thanks to you and BlackHeart (assuming you're not the same person) I no longer have a good rating. Much appreciated, I thought this was Sioux Sports not Bisonville. I'm so sorry that I don't like St. Cloud State for what they helped do to UND and for some reason I'm not allowed to express that on a message board for UND fans without being attacked. Real nice guys.

Now I know what you're talking about with the "points". Yes, I accept your apology

I've discussed this issue with many SCSU fans, and not one of them feel that UND should be forced to change their nickname. In fact, I've never heard anybody (SCSU fan or not) say they were in agreement with the NCAA on this issue.

  8. So do you and Riverman (thanks for the negative mark you !@#$%!) deny that St. Cloud has gone well out of it's way to force UND to retire the Sioux nickname and at the same time drag our institution's name through the mud? Seriously uncool! I don't hate your fans but I have no love for your administration.

I don't know the connection between SCSU and UND's war with the NCAA over the Sioux nickname. I know a past president issued a position on the issue. No offense, but I think you're looking for a scapegoat. What's a "negative mark"?

  9. If we are lowering our "standards" before there are even standards... Why wouldn't BSU and MTU fit better?

BSU is pretty close to UND and MTU is fairly close to Duluth and IS a founding member of the WCHA.

SCSU seems to have money problems (almost cut football program) MSUM would be ok but maybe are not a first choice

for CC,DU, or UNO and let's not forget our shiny new member to the group Miami of Ohio.

All MNSCU schools are having money problems.

  10. According to this article, St. Cloud was expecting to be a part of the talks regarding a new conference. They were never extended an invitation and state they would not accept if an invite was offered.

    http://www.sctimes.c...ey-super-league

Nobody from the remaining WCHA schools were aware of the new "super" conference. I hope most SCSU fans know that President Potter's statement was nothing more than sour grapes.

Steve Cobb from UNA said, "I don't think anybody saw this coming." "At our meeting in April we voted to extend an invitation to Miami and Notre Dame," Cobb said, referring to a pair of CCHA teams. "That passed with 100 percent of the vote. Nobody said they were unhappy. We left the April meeting and basically some of them contacted Notre Dame and Miami and said, 'Don't take the WCHA invitation, we're going to invite you to join our super league.'

"I blame everybody for being less than honest with their own league members. It's a really sneaky back-door deal."

  11. First of all, I completely agree that the NCAA should stick to sites that will support NCAA hockey like the X and the Ralph. Regional attendance is an embarrassment to the sport of hockey. What's even more of an embarrassment is that SCSU and Wiscy punt under 8k in the X for the region final. I believe UMD and (?) had the same size crowd at Mariucci the year before.

That being said, UND fans are in a hockey bubble. You have arguably the best program and fan support in all of college hockey. Yet some of you constantly try to compare fan support and the quality of other programs to yourself. FYI, there is no comparison. Do other programs strive to have what UND has up in Grand Forks? Yes they do. But with less resources and less loyal fans. The "UND's" are few and far between. Please don't take offense, because I enjoy this message board and have allot of respect for UND hockey.

  12. UND needs to do what's best for UND, not what's best for College Hockey. I could care less if "weaker" programs fold. They are exactly that: weak. If there was less teams in college hockey, Minnesota and Wisconsin would have to travel more for nonconference Big Ten games to places like UND.

If Minnesota and Wisconsin can leave the WCHA so should UND.

So you would like to see "weaker" programs fold because you want to see Minnesota play at The Ralph?? You're quite the visionary

  13. This is incredibly short-sighted. UND is a legitimate college hockey powerhouse, among a handful of programs that can probably be counted on to be among the top five each and every year. That being said, UND is a big fish in a teeny, tiny little pond.

What you continually suggest is that UND take its ball (or in this case, puck) and go start a new conference somewhere. That's fine, and almost understandable. But what happens to the rest of the WCHA? The Fighting Sioux fill barns throughout the conference. You saw what Sioux fans did at the Final Five. People were suggesting the X would be a ghost town without the Gophers and/or Badgers. Officials have been quoted as saying they actually had 100+ MORE people through the turnstiles every session than last year, and most of the crowd was demonstrably Sioux fans.

So you leave the WCHA to start your own gig and watch half of the remaining teams turn belly up?

Say four WCHA teams fail. That takes us from 58 down to 54. And let's assume a couple CCHA teams fold as a result of the BTHC. Now we're down to 52 Division I teams. Once that ripple starts washing its way across college hockey, what do you think is going to happen? Do you honestly believe some university administrators are going to look at THAT landscape and decide to invest the millions of dollars it takes to establish a new program? No way.

College hockey is already operating a 16-team championship tournament under a sort of "wink-wink" deal with the NCAA; normally they want 60 teams to support that big of a playoff structure. You want to go back to 12? When I was a UND student, the hockey playoff was a four team deal. Is that what you want to see?

Fighting Sioux hockey has been a supporter of start-up and fledgling hockey programs since its beginning. "We" played Bemidji as it moved from DII to DI, and look what that program has turned out to be. We played Mankato while they were an independent after working their way up from DIII to DII to DI.

I've watched DI college hockey continue to contract, and I don't like that trend at all. I don't really believe the BTHC is about "growing the sport", but I am willing to at least look the other way while those schools go off on their own. I do not want to sit idly by while the sport dwindles further.

This is the time to look at the big picture; time to ensure there is a future for college hockey. What good is being that big fish if the pond you are in is drying up? You ever see what happens to a fish caught in a tidal pool? They don't last long.

Excellent post! Without John Mariucci, SCSU hockey wouldn't exist.

He knew the sport had to grow for the sake of all NCAA hockey programs.

And it needs to grow more!

  14. This is what I've been saying about Minnesota. Maybe the faculty being laid off or forced into early retirement can peddle for loose change by the National Hockey Center when they protest the Fighting Sioux nickname again. I'd sure hate to see SCSU cut FB because there is a lot of tradition there. Why would they build a big beautiful stadium a couple of years ago only to cut FB now? I don't think it's going to happen and this is a lot of scare tactics to get alumni to pony up. If you ask me, they should focus squarely and only on the faculty and administration for cuts. Think about it. Each one draws a salary of at least $60K, gets retirement contributions from SCSU, gets health insurance through SCSU, etc. I am sure there is all sorts of duplication that could be cut out.

I believe our athletic department has become a very expensive social club. I sincerely hope the president cleans house at Halenbeck Hall!
