  1. That's what I've thought and what I've heard. Big Ten Hockey, despite what many people on here say or want to believe, will be a top 3 with the potential to be #1 or #2 in hockey. The world revolves around money and college athletics is no different. The Big Ten schools have more money than schools in any other conference...just depends on how much each school wants to invest in the sport. UM, UW, Michigan, Michigan State all have a solid hockey tradition. I don't expect PSU and OSU to automatically become powerhouses in hockey, but those other four won't be going anywhere...and I believe their programs will get stronger by being in the Big Ten because their schedule will be more friendly to the casual fan who doesn't have alot of college hockey knowledge.

Football and basketball are the biggest sport on the vast majority of college campuses. The NCHC is an exception to the norm. I'm worried that the B1G will become the destination conference for elite hockey players. This won't happen enitially, and the NCHC will always be a major player. But the schools of the B1G have massive athletic budgets, tons of recruiting money, and a media machine promoting the B1G brand. Not to mention, the B1G has major research institutions with prestigeous reputations. The BTHC's upside is scary.

  2. Check what happens in 2014/15/16. The big ten is a dying conference. Their only hope is basketball and the southern schools are already passing them (besides this season for some odd reason).

How is the Big Ten a dying conference? They are probably the #1 or #2 most powerful entity in college sports.

  3. THe other hockey conferences are kiddind themselves if they thing they can compete with the Big Ten brand. That doesn't mean the BTHC has better programs (which they don't). But that brand is extremely valuable. Not to mention all of the schools are national research universities that have loads of money and a TV network.

  4. Your right, the author of the bill stated as much. He also made a point of saying he was on the finance committee that gives financial aid to Minnesota universities. Why would he say that? As I stated before, the bill won't pass, but the author of the bill was basically telling the University that they should rethink their decision about not playing UND.

Living in Gopher country, I hear opinions from two camps. One camp says, UND needs us more than we need UND, so let's screw'em over by not putting them on the schedule. The other hate to lose the annual series with UND.

Winkler got lambasted by the media and the public. He lives in his own little St Paul legislative world, and forgot that the voters don't like legislative games and that most of the voters don't give two craps about college hockey.

  5. I don't see that law passing.

The bill was "tongue in cheek". It was a shot at Minnesota's football program and administration for paying $800k to get out of two games against North Carolina. The proposed legislation is a joke (literally). So don't read into it.

  6. ???? No it isn't. I am not talking about 7-9pm.....I am talking about 10-2am...when people go out drinking after the games. Also, where is everyone going to stay??? The Best Western or Holiday Inn...the two shabbiest hotels in Minny?

When is the last time you've been to downtown Mpls? Seriously, it's safe. You can find trouble after bar close in Mpls, StP, or Grand Forks for that matter. You should be able to find accomodations....there are almost 10,000 hotel rooms in Mpls. It's a first class city.
  7. I will add another. Do the gophers have to travel and sleep in a hotel come tourney time? No they get to go about their normal routine. No other team that plays in the final five has that luxury at all. So with that the "Minnesota Rule" I start to see some advantages.

UND doesn't have the proximity advantages of UM. But the NCHC will have a "North Dakota" rule. There's no way the fans of the NCHC can fill the Target Center without UND fans.
  8. OK, you pretty much wrote exactly what I was thinking. The location is great....being in Minneapolis, however, I think many UND fans portay this similar to their Final Five weekends in St. Paul (at the X). Downtown Minny is much different and is not as welcoming as downtown St. Paul. The crime is terrible downtown Minny. I still think this is not a great place to have this event, but again, I also have no idea where else they could have it.

Downtown Mpls and the Warehouse District are extremely safe. Target Center is next to Target Field, and how many times have you heard people complain about crime when they talk about Target Field? They don't.
  9. From the OPE report...

    NDSU Football

    Total expenses 3,332,907

    Total revenue 3,332,907

    NDSU Basketball

    Total expenses 1,988,215

    Total revenue 1,988,215

I now have a better understanding of Dan's extreme suspicion of institutional accounting.

    OPE numbers are bologna.

  10. Ha, I kind of figured that, just trying to give you a hard time. The attendance figures would be interesting for a Big Ten Tournament in Chicago or Detroit. Michigan didn't have a very good crowd at the Frozen Four last year, but that is understandable due to the distance and lack of tickets. Would Minnesota fans travel that far? Its hard to answer that because for most people finances become an issue so they have to choose between the Big Ten Tourney, NCAA Regional, or the Frozen Four. If I had to pick one I would pick the Big Ten Tourney, that way I could be guaranteed to watch my team and be able to book in advance which would help with plane/hotel prices as well.

    Nope.
  11. I don't think Minnesota's policy is as stringent as Wisconsin's. http://www1.umn.edu/usenate/athletics/antidiscrimination.html I'm not sure if this is the current statement from the U.

But this was an interesting read.

Conference change could end Badger/Sioux relationship

An interesting tidbit has surfaced recently in an article written by the Wisconsin State Journal's Andy Baggot. In the article Baggot notes that according to UW deputy athletic director Sean Frazier, who oversees men's hockey, Wisconsin won't be able to schedule North Dakota in non-conference games when the Badgers move out of the WCHA and to the Big Ten conference because of the University's stance on on Native American logo's and names.

  12. This weekend's UND/SCSU games will be on Charter channel 87 in St. Cloud, Comcast Channel 13 (St. Paul) and Comcast Channel 23 (Minneapolis)

UND fans in the SC and TC metro area can watch the game on Charter ch.87 in St Cloud, Comcast ch.13 in Minneapolis and Comcast ch.23 in St Paul.

  13. we were going to go to the games, the two guys that I was going to go to the game with had something come up, I think I saw 44 dollars for the price of the tickets from Ticket Master. I don't want to tell you what I paid for my tickets from Stub Hub were for the UMD and UND tickets. I think I paided 340.00 to sit two rows from the glass.

    Ok, I'll go $43 ;)
