  1. I understand what you're saying, but who's going to want it from the outside with the bosses and the bosses boss positions vacant.

Nine years in one job, and the better part of 30 years with one program, is unheard of these days. I congratuate him, thank him for his service to UND, and wish him well in his future endeavors. UND cannot afford to slot this position at a $200,000 base at this time. I have a feeling this is not Dale's last career stop.

No doubt that this is not his last stop. If Dale would have stayed at UND throughout the transition period then you would expect that he'd be a career Sioux. Now that he has moved on I expect him to continue his sucess and what a better place for exposure than in the heart of Big Ten country. It possible some day that we'll see Lennon and Bohl squaring off in a New Years Day bowl game.

  2. Does anyone know if this is a bus trip for the team, or will they fly?

I don't know for certain, but I'm pretty sure all WCHA game except CC, Denver and Alaska are bus trips. Madison is a long trip, but not nearly as bad as that Tech trip. Yuck, 2 lane roads and guaranteed snow. Luckily we got that one done early this year.

  3. I believe Martinsen's intentions and contributions are good. I would argue a volunteer shouldn't have nearly that much authority though. If Martinsen's expertise were necessary in that capacity-hire him! Even then it may be a mistake to have an intermediary between the president and the AD. If media reports are correct, that structure is unusual. Probably with good reason.

UND would have probably hired Dan if he would let them. He doesn't need the money, why pay him if he doesn't want to be paid.

Now I'll put my Sid Hartman voice on. Dan's a close personal friend of my family and used to be a neighbor when he lived in Fargo. He is nothing but an asset for UND. Also, a great guy.

  4. I just love all these Bison fans coming to the Ralph for Sioux games. They are the same ones here in Fargo that say "Sioux Suck, except I love Sioux Hockey!" I know for a fact just a year ago Stop n Go you could buy one get one free for Bison games. Funny how a metro area of 150,000 can't sell out every game. Grand Forks is 50,000 and can sell out a 11500 arena for hockey all winter!! With a line of cars 78 miles long coming out of Fargo every Friday and Saturday night!

Let's not get to carried away with our definition of a sell out. There are many games throughout the hockey season when there are plenty of open seats, due to no show, and poor student turnout (upper deck).

Since I didn't get my degree from either school I can be a fan of both schools. I live and Fargo and try to take my kids to a couple of NDSU games a year and it is getting harder to get good seats of 4 in a row this year. I truely hope that both schools need to expand football stadiums.

  5. Indeed interesting. A chess game seems to come to mind but without the "check mate" as of now.

I'm guessing the "checkmate" is in Russia right now. What is everyone's opinion on a new AD, if and when it is needed? Should it be a familiar name like Bollinger, or should UND go outside of the area? I know that didn't work so well with Bunning, but it has worked well to the south with Taylor.

Also, I have a question. Everything I've read states that the AD reports directly to Harmenson, is that true? If it is, does the Taylor report to a VP or directly to the president? It seems to me that UND maybe has an extra layer of reporting that is maybe muddying the waters.

    Very interesting stuff.

  6. SUU is a decent FCS team that I'm sure the UND players and staff are very excited to play. IMO, UND by 10 is a good line. The pass defense concerns me a little bit, but it think the offense should be able to outscore SUU. If it is a blow out I'll be a little surprised, but you never know.

  7. Finally after years of HS Hockey being played in the Coliseum ground is being broken on the $30 million dollar UP Center TODAY at 3pm!!!

Can't wait to see it in 2008.

Squirt, Pee-Wee, Bantam, HS, or USHL, I can't wait to sit in a decent arena in Fargo!!!

  8. I believe the UND contract has an option for another year after the 07-08 year.

I guess the question then is, who's option? Is it UND's or the radio station's?

If you read into what McFeely wrote Sunday, you can guess that NDSU taking a hard look at KKAG. As a fan of both schools it would be great to get both on a statewide station.

  9. Pretty cool that UND recruits were the leading rusher (Solum--19 for 67 yards) and receiver (VanZee--5 for 99 yards) in the game. I was actually a little surprised that team North Dakota won, given the fact that there were only two UND recruits and two NDSU recruits on the team (three for NDSU counting a walk-on). That seems like a pretty low number compared to most years. Plus, considering how Montana has dominated this series for the most part, you'd kind of expect it would take a team loaded with I-AA (whoops--FCS :D )/high-level dII signees for North Dakota to be competitive, let alone win.

Team ND probably had an advantage with the 13 kids from South High. I think the entire O line was from South. Not that the South kids are that much better, but I'm sure team ND played more like a team and less like an all-star team.

    Great Job Team ND!!

  10. SiouxForever-

FYI, your not the only person on this board who has played HS hockey, or played with current/former D1 athletes or for that matter played with/against All-American's, Hobey Baker Finalists/winners or NHL all-stars. Just don't look down on those who maybe haven't played organized hockey, you may be surprised on how much an "outsider" might understand about the game. The biggest problem that I have is that you coming off like you think your the second coming of Dean Blais or Herb Brooks, and I pretty sure your not.

Just ease of on preempting everything you say with "I know a lot about hockey". WHOOPDEY DOO!!! So do a lot of us. :silly:

  11. Radke has shown to be a character kind of guy, who'll switch positions to help the team, and who'll go back to D when needed ... every team needs that kind of contribution.

I get a kick out of Radke. He did give UND's forwards a little "edge" last year. Character guy may be taking it a little far. What choice did he have? Play forward or sit on the bench. IMO, a character guy doesn't make a habit out of taking stupid 3rd period penalties all the bleeping time. :silly:

  12. In talking about abilities, I think you pretty summed up Porter and Kozek in that last paragraph. Instead of saying they don't have a lot of similarities, I'd say that they do in fact have a lot of similarities. They both play physical and both are pretty close in size(6'1" vs 5'11"). I wouldn't consider either a fast skater, both have a tendency to shoot wildly around the net, and both have had trouble controlling the puck. And I think Porter was counted on to score more goals than he did while here, but he didn't. And we're not going to start talking about the draft pick assumption that "because he was a 2nd pick, blah blah blah." They're both good players. They've both adapted to roles at UND that they probably weren't accustomed to from where they played before UND. They've both played through injuries. If Kozek can play with a play-maker this year who can get him the puck so that he can set up somewhere on the ice just like Duncan, he can be just as dynamite.

    LeftyZL-

I agree with most of your points, but I remember Porter being billed as one of the fastest players not only on UND but in the entire WCHA.

  13. For the sake of the four Dakota I-AA teams I hope you're wrong. I still fail to understand how it is a good thing to be a sacrificial lamb. I don't care about the school getting a big check, I care about the football team getting a win. I'd like to see I-AA teams stick to playing other I-AA teams. If a I-AA team must play a Division I team they're better off playing somebody from a lowly conference like the MAC, not a powerhouse like the Big 10. But that's just my opinion.

DaveK, if UND wants to survive in DI than you will need a big payday if not every year then everyother year at least. Look at App. St. last time I checked they had a pretty good FCS program, but they still look for a big payday. Those $300K-$500K paydays pay for alot of non revenue producing sports. It's a fact of life, and I think that Bunning and the rest of UND's athletic department would agree.

  14. I would say this is different because Gregoire always had the opportunity to go to UND.

Also, UND getting kids from Winnipeg is alot closer to home than Minnesota getting kids from the Iron Range.

I always thought that the Iron Range was in Minnesota. I must be mistaken. :silly:

  15. It will be interesting to see if the Gophers can upgrade the team to go along with the schedule. I personally Brewster still saying all the right things. If they continue to field below average teams and upgrade the schedule they'll be wishing for the Music City bowl in the Beirman (sp?) Building. THe big powers in the Big 10 (Mich, OSU, Iowa, ect...) still field one regional FCS team.

IMO, when this all shakes out in a couple of years I still think we'll see a regional FCS team each year. For the sake of the four Dakota FCS teams I hope I'm right.

  16. Not only are the larger funds more sophisticated they also have more money that they can invest in riskier ventures. Where a college/university with less funds can't afford to risk their principle. Also don't forget that 2006 was a great year for the markets. It didn't take a sophisticated investor to make money last year.

  17. UND (based on what I've read) tries to get 4% annual, spendable return on endowments.

Returns above that are put back in to the endowment to grow the principle amount.

    For example: $4 million.

If you get 4% you'll have $160 thousand to spend annually. But what you really want is a higher return, for example 6% (I'd like 12% but why be that greedy in an example). That'd get you the 4% for the annual operations and the other 2% ($80k) to put back into the kitty ($4.080 million to start at next year).

12% might be a little greedy. :silly: You forgot to include inflation in your calculation. CPI averages around 4% (lets not even talk about higher ed inflation) then you only have 2% to play with. IMO, these large endowment funds are invested fairly conservatively, maybe to a fault. My guess is that their goal is 8% with anything more being great and anything less than 7% being unacceptable. i.e. assets managers loosing their jobs. I have lunch with some members of the UND foundation about 6 times a year, I'll have to pick their brain a little on this.

Thank you to the Engelstad Family, IMO, this is just the beginning. When Betty passes on, hopefully in many years, I foresee the Engelstad Family Trust giving a bulk of its assets to UND. That number will probably in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

  18. My guess is the reason we haven't seen a decision yet from Toews is that he could be waiting for Chicago to offer the max (or make their final offer). If the final offer isn't the max, he'll be back. If Chicago offers the max, Toews will leave. Until Chicago comes to a decision on what the final offer will be, the fans will be left in limbo and currently they are in no hurry to make any final offers since it's too early in the process. Both sides, I'm guessing, are trying to feel each other out in their negotiations at this time.

The ultimate deciding factor won't be whether he wants another year of education, wants to be with his friends and teammates for another year, wants to improve his skills for another year, etc. Instead, it will come down to money.

The same can be said for Gologoski with the Penguins and Okposo with the Islanders. Once they offer what each feels he should get, he'll leave...otherwise he will be back.

All three feel they can play in the NHL so that's not an issue. None of the three are going to settle on an amount lower than they feel they are worth. Rather, they would come back to college and increase their bargaining position next year with another good college year.

I don't think money is the issue b/c as the number 3 pick in the draft the blackhawks know that he will not expect anything but a max contract, and offering anything less is laughable. In this day and age of the NHL there is not a lot to negotiate. We all know that the max signing bonus is capped at $85K, a $850,000 max base salary with attainable bonuses that could get him to $2-2.5mill. IMO, if the Blackhawks are not offering exactly what St. Louis offered EJ than Toews may be doing what MFJJ did and hold out in college for a trade, or wait until he's a FA next summer.

My guess is that the max is, and has been on the table for over a year now and Toews is still decieding what is best for him. If he continues to play well at the WC and then spurs the Hawks for another run at the WJC (he'd be the captain) JT will have Canadian endorsers throwing crazy money at him.

    It's crazy, but could happen.

  19. First, I think that the concept of the Vikings Stadium is great. That eastern part of downtown is underutilized and this could really be a great anchor of development. I will say that a BILLION dollars is a lot of cash and it will be interesting to see how they structure the funding. The Minneapolis area has to have a retractable roof stadium to compete for NCAA's Super Bowls and whatnot.

I've driven by the land that's going to house the Twins stadium, and I can't see how it's going to fit. It's going to be crammed in to that lot. IMO, I think we can suffer through a few bad weeks of weather. I thought we were tough up here?

  20. Going to be some big pay days coming for Vanek and Parise.

Thomas' 40+ and leading the league in plus minus should get him somewhere in the $4million per year range. I would guess that Zach's 31 would be worth somewhere in the $2.5-$3 per year range. IF ZP continues his goal scoring rampage in the playoffs, he could add another $1 mil per. If he were to lead the playoffs in goals scored and win the Conn Smythe ( I realize there is a lot of hockey left, and the Devils aren't even a lock to get out of round 1) but if ZP were to win the Conn Smythe at 22 years old, he might be able to bump that even further.

Just a quick question since it sounds like you might know. What kind a status are players like Vanek and Parise given after their 3 year rookie deals are finished? Restricted FA, FA, something else??

IMO, I guess I don't give as much weight to +- as you do. I don't see Vanek getting a million more than ZP. ZP just may be the best player in NJ (not including Marty), Vanek is somewhere in the top 5 for the Sabres (not that there is anything wrong with that).
