  1. Bismarck beat South. It looks like a Western school is the favorite to win state for the first time since the Peluso (Bismarck), Philion (Minot) days. Actually, I believe that is the only year a Western team has ever won state. I want to say it was 92, I remember watching the game while I was playing bantams.

I only saw Bismarck play once, and they did not impress me too much. They were very solid defensively. I remember looking at their roster and seeing all Sr and Jr's.

South didn't play their starting goalie. Janick played instead of Bucholtz and from what I've seen this year, there's a BIG drop between the two. I don't know why Bucholtz didn't play. Maybe Benson was playing this one close to the vest knowing he may see Bismark at state.

Yes it was 1992 when Minot upset a stacked Bismarck team ( one of the better teams in the 90's, IMO) for the state championship. Peluso was a Junior, and played in Omaha his senior year.

Edit: Didn't see your post Hockey High, thanks for the info.

  2. Good point. There might be someone out there with the right answer, but, I think a strict interpretation like that would preclude a player from even basic handling of the puck in a back-and-forth motion to set up a deke for a shot on goal, or it would preclude a player from drawing the puck far back on his stick for a delayed wrister or to shelf the puck.

Maybe the key is that the player needs to be in forward motion, not necessarily the puck. During the spin-o-rama, Blaker was no longer moving forward, but, he wasn't moving backward either. It was more like a 360-degree pivot in basketball. Bottomline, it's probably ok to pivot in place and do whatever the heck you want with the puck during a penalty shot or a shootout.

    Thoughts?

While trying to find the video of the goal I found the same question being asked, and the answer is that the NHL has made a specific exception for the spin move. I'm not going to find it but apparently it is in the NHL rule book.

  3. South beat Grafton 7-3 at the UP Center. South scored 4 goals in 2 minutes towards the end of the 2nd period to put the game away. Grafton outshot south 16-8 in the first period. Grafton carried the play in the first but when they announced 16 shots I was surprised. South seemed to sleepwalk through the 1st and most of the 2nd period. From what I saw South carried play in an uneventful 3rd period.

Quick summary. As this point of the year South really seemed to have the edge in both skill and physical play. If south would have played the way they played against Moorhead and White Bear this game could have gotten out of hand. Overall, it was a sloppy game with little flow. South defence turned the puck over countless times in the 1st and 2nd period, Grafton didn't have anyone who could capitalize on those mistakes.

In the Forum Grafton's coach stated that he wasn't worried, it's early and they'll play south again. While it is early, I don't see Grafton competing for a top spot in the EDC unless they improve a ton.

  4. An update on south. South beat North 3-0 on Thursday, and like jloos said they really looked bad. 0 shots in the first period.

Also, the Forum had a small blurb, but it looked like South beat Central up in GF 4-1. Bucholtz played great, again, for south as Central put close to 35 shots on net.

Grafton plays at South today in a match up of 3-0 EDC teams.

  5. I don't remember a goal being disallowed. Unless you're counting the one earlier in the game when the whistle sounded because the goalie covered it, and after about 2-3 seconds and the goalie lifting his glove up the WBL player hit it in the net and celebrated counts.

You're right though, South began to let WBL walk around a lot more in the third. They didn't show as much effort as they had in the first two periods.

Your probably right, with the disallowed goal. I was only going by what I was told.

Good match up in Fargo tomorrow. South -v- North at the UP Center. We'll get a chance to see how improved North is. South should win, but in these "rivalry" games you never know.

  6. Just an FYI:

Fargo South beat then #8 ranked White Bear Lake 4-3 at the UP Center on Friday. From what I heard, didn't see it. South played very well in the first and second, but started chasing WBL in the third. Also, I don't know the circumstances, but WBL had a goal disallowed.

Good start for South. Now on the intrastate matchups.

  7. Talk about an inactive community this year.

The season is two weeks old and there isn't a single post. :glare:

Tonight RR rolled past Wahpeton as expected, and South tied Moorhead 2-2.

Not very many close games in league competition yet.

I'll comment on the South Moorhead game. Very evenly matched teams. Good to very good goaltending both ways. South's strength rignt now is in the net and on the blue line. They are very big and very physical. South's going to need to find some scoring. There were a lot of missed opportunities in where nets were missed and shots were fanned on. Moorhead is going to be pretty good. From what I understand the spuds haven't had as much practice time as a team as south and it showed early on. South seemed to trasition through the nutral zone much better then the spuds in the first period, but as the game wore on Moorhead got better and better. I didn't see a big drop off between each teams three lines, I don't know if that's a good thing or a bad thing.

South will be a contender in the East and if they can find some scoring they will have a chance at state. Not that it means much but I think these bantams finished 2nd to Grafton.

Moorhead will also contend in a down year in Sec 8.

I would have liked to see this have closer to christmas, like it typically is played, that would have given me a better look at the two teams.

  8. An event like the World Juniors can only help UND. Even if it lost some money, the regional economic impact and status of hosting a marquee event successfully only helps UND and the community. The Canadian publicity is incredible, which can only help recruiting Canada in other sports (e.g. the recently recruited Quebec football players). The challenge for AD is to use the success of hockey to brand the entire athletic program at the DI level.

It's interesting that Moorhead (not Fargo and the Urban Plains) became the partner in the bid. Politics of GF(UND) vs. Fargo (NDSU) with Fargo leaders not wanting to be the lower level partner? Moorhead leaders and hockey boosters have no such constraints.

I don't think it has anything to do with Fargo leaders not wanting to be the lower level partner. IMO, it is a clash of the ego's of those running the REA and those running the UP Center. I don't think those at UP left on the best of terms with REA. From what I've heard the UP wasn't even contacted by the REA. I wish both venues could have worked things out, maybe in a few years.

  9. Question:

We want to get about 16 tickets together for a game this season. We've never done this before at the Ralph.

Is this even possible? If it is, are we going to be in the last row of the arena even if we buy on Sept 20th right when they go on sale?

I guess it comes down to what % of the games seats are Season Tickets or Single Game doesn't it? More season ticket holders would mean less available seats for single game, and worse seats when bought as a group.

I'd call the ticket office right now and inquire about group ticket sales. I don't know the protocol, but it can't hurt to ask early. Go to REA's website, there may be a specific contact for groups.

    Good luck.

  10. Just saw your post and your family is in our prayers. I have two boys a 6 and a 3 year old and I can't imaging going through this. At least these little guys are as tough a nails and I'm sure Will will get through this no worse for the ware.

    Best wishes.

  11. I believe NDSU would get around 20,000 in attendance back at old Dacotah field. I just saw it in their record books. They weren't DI back then were they? Or maybe they just couldn't count when they were DII.

There may have been some liberties taken with attendance. :) Back then attendance drove who got the bids to host playoff games, so those totals might be a little off. Like 5000+ off is my guess.

  12. This amazes me. UMtc has more than 4 times the population in the metro then ND does in the entire state and UND draws more in attendence. Way to go UND, proving once again who really has the best fans in the country.

Not to piss in everyone's kool-aid, but it might also have something to do with the fact that REA has more seats than the John. :)

Still great job GF and eastern ND in supporting the Fighting Sioux!!

  13. I'm not happy about this, and I'm not even a smoker. I don't allow people to smoke in my home or in my vehicle, but I do like to indulge in the guilty pleasure on the rare occassions that I get to go out drinking. I don't like the way I smell when I get home, but how f'n hard is it to shower and wash your clothes? I do support no smoking policies in all public places with the exception of bars, but to include bars is a travesty. Smoking and drinking go together like peanut butter and jelly. Now I have pretty much lost the desire to even go to bars at all anymore. This is disgusting IMHO. :silly:

    DaveK-

Your guilty pleasure mean that in the eye of many in the medical field you ARE a smoker.

My wife had pnemonia when she was a baby (did some damage) and can't be in a smokey bar for more than a few minutes before she has to leave. Now I'll be able to take her out on the town and have some fun. ;)

  14. I preferred the Versus coverage much more. Obviously HD is great for hockey and next year we'll have HD for our locals, so NBC will be HD. The picture on my TV is very good, but the feed from NBC was so bad that I couldn't even make out the blue lines or red line, the puck was very hard to pick up. I watched the highlights on ESPNHD, what a difference.

It's good to hear that someone else was having the same problems with the NBC feed. I could hardly watch the game it was so bad. I don't remember game 3 being like that, but 4 and 5 have been terrible.

  15. Front Funner.

I was expecting Wilson would stay for a few more years before stepping down, but I guess he was just waiting for this opportunity to arise. The new coach will have a lot of opportunity to succeed, they've got a pretty decent lineup, but Grafton and Central still look pretty good at this point too. If they get a good new coach, I see them doing extremely well, if they don't, it could be trouble for them.

Can't wait to watch some hockey in this new UP center.

Front Runner, I'm sure they are lining up to take they job. :D

I've got my Force, tickets, I can't wait to go and pick out my seats.

  16. I see most AP classes at South disappearing with a new school. The classes (have a neighbor in the administration) are having enough trouble filling classes to a capacity that makes it feasible to have the classes as is. If you cut the number in half and put them in different schools, there's going to be some trouble keeping the classes afloat. Also, teachers in North Dakota aren't getting paid near what they get if they go across the border, so I don't see why there would be a large supply of teachers in the Fargo area, when they can go over the river to get a 10-15% (estimate) higher payroll.

I am from Fargo of course, and I do dislike splitting our school into half, especially for the sake of our sports teams, but it just seems so radical to build a new school at this point.

Quick tangent... After looking at the populations of the schools on wikipedia, I saw the alum links. Did you notice that in 7 seasons of America's Next Top Model, 2 of them were born in North Dakota. Weird. Maybe I'm just out of the loop. :D

I don't know about other courses, but on the science side there are several sections of AP Biology, Chem, and physics. They may have to have ap teachers float between the two schools, we'll see. Teacher compensation in Fargo is very competitive with Moorhead. While true salary may be lower in Fargo the district pays for both the employer and employee match in to their retirement account. Plus the funding debacle over in MN would scare the heck out of me if I was a teacher in MN. How often do you see stories about teacher layoffs on the west side of the Red? In Moorhead its happend a few time in the last decade.

  17. Maybe I generalize a bit too much, however, I sincerely believe that the new school is a bad idea for Fargo. Beyond an athletic standpoint. If you look at schools across the board in states outside of ND, there are huge numbers of schools with over 1,500 kids in enrollment 10-12. I actually think a higher enrollment, to a certain extent, is for the better of the students. I believe with South's large enrollment, they are capable of housing numerous AP classes which would not fill enrollment elsewhere, and allow for more Junior Varsity participation than any other school in the state. If you also look at the statistics for population in the (Now) South school district, the graduating classes coming up are smaller and smaller, I believe at certain points dropping to about 400 students per year. That's 200 students down from previous years, when I would have thought it would be an ok idea to add the new school. I don't have a credible source to actually pinpoint the numbers, but if the population of a graduating class drops from 600 to 400 per year, and is then split in half by an additional school, isn't this going to completely ruin the benefits of having a larger school? There will not be higher level classes available to students wishing to excel, and a graduating class of 200 down from 600 is going to have a serious problem in athletics. I do not see any larger youth programs in sports such as football, hockey, baseball, etc popping up, getting more kids interested. This means the same amount of people that were going to play for South are going to play split onto different teams, and there will not be enough to fill the spots, and ruin the balance of sporting events, and may easily cause troubles for teams trying to provide a plausible group of kids. Maybe it will even out, 10-20 years from now, but I foresee this as being a huge mistake. If I had been asked personally what I would do, I would have left it. But it wasn't my decision, and I'll have to live with it, I guess. Yay for more taxes! Bring em on!

I was also wondering, where are they going to find all these new coaches and staff, since it's pretty limited around here. I sense quite a few problems arising.

I don't have any numbers to back up my claims either, but from what I understand the district is projecting that all three schools have around 300 per graduating class. That brings the numbers in line with were they were in the early 90's and South didn't have any real problems winning state championships back then.

The district is saying that AP classes that are offered at south will be offered at Davies, we'll see. As far as recruiting teachers to Fargo, I don't think that will be hard. There are an awful lot of people applying for jobs in Fargo that have to go elsewhere. From what I hear from teachers in the area, Fargo is one of the tougher jobs to get. Plus they are not really going to neeed to add a bunch of teachers, they'll just be moving half to Davies. Qualified coaches is another thing, it seem like the schools have favored hiring from the inside, but they may not have that luxury any more.

South been an athletic jugernaut for a long time and that's not going to be the case any more. That may be tough on us in Fargo, but I don't think you'll see the rest of the state crying to much.

  18. Hm. Interesting.

So what does everyone think? Positive or a negative for next years South team? I figured they'd be first or second next year, and don't see them as being much else. Is there any clue as to who the new coach will be?

From what I can tell there is not really a front funner at this time. It's a pretty good job with the new UP Center coming on line in the next year, and the tournament center hopefully up an running by winter of 2009 (speculation at best). On the other hand it could be very difficult with Davies taking a large chunk of players with it in 2011.

    Stay tuned.

  19. Yeah, if you thought adding a new high school in a shrinking enrollment and a huge boom to taxes would be impossible, ask South Fargo how that's working out. As far as I know, none of the parents/students/teachers/other citizens want another High School, and I'm pretty sure that South's enrollment will fall below a lot of the other larger schools in the state. The new Davies' High will also have all the higher priced homes (the farther south in Fargo you go, the higher price of homes, generally), meaning South High will be filled with all the lower income families, seperating even more the distinction between the city.

It was a bad choice overall, and look how easily Davies' was scheduled to be built.

Edit: To the previous poster, it just goes to show you about all the condescending names. South High School will now be in the middle of the city, and Davies will be the farthest south by far. Maybe South will go back to Central High School?

I think you are generalizing South Fargo a little too much. There are a lot of parents and students who really like the idea that kids in fargo are going to have a lot more of an opportunity to participate in activities with Fargo South going from a mega HS to a "normal" sized large school. There are quite a few parents who send their kids to Shanley, Oak Grove, or Park Christian just so thier kids can have more opportunities to participate in school activities. Also if you take a look at class sizes at south a majority of them are at or close to the 28 limit. As a tax payer in Fargo, a parent of elementary aged kids and a husband of a teacher I think the new HS is a great idea.

To address your statement that Davies will have majority of higher incomes. Obviously you don't have kids at the elementary schools in that area. I'll give you Centenial that's definitly higher income, but take a look at Bennett and Kennedy. Both of those schools have some of the highest levels of assisted lunches in the district.

I guess I'm in the minority in Fargo that thinks if the school district has managed their funds appropiately and therefore has built up a large excess fund then they should be able to do what they want with the money. IMO, its better to build a school with cash on hand then having to float bonds.

I guess we'll know how this all turns out in fargo in 10-20 years.

  20. Just a small clarification--Dressler was a good sprinter his jr. year, qualifying with pretty solid times in both the 200 and 400. He was mostly known as an 800 meter and sprint relay runner, however. He was runner up at state in the 800 as a jr., and ran relays for his other three events. I wonder if he's the only male class A runner--at least over the past 25 years or so--to have top-two finishes at state in the 100, 200, 400 and 800?

That's a pretty impressive feat. I can't think of it happening in the last 15 years, but I could be wrong. Back when I was in HS track the 800 runners were lumped with the distance guys.

Now just think of winning those events every year since you were a 8th grader. She may not play football, but Laura Roesler will be fun to follow, where ever here track career takes her.

  21. In addition to being one of UND's great football players, Fennell also has been a very successful businessman. He recently sold one of his goldmines for $1.5 billion.

    http://www.mineweb.com/mineweb/view/minewe...6&sn=Detail

This may be mocked and ridiculed, but could Fennell be the mysterious donor that's capable of funding the retractable roof stadium?

To be fair, I don't think Horner was billed as an elite sprinter. He is a beast in the weight room, from what I hear.

  22. Great for Bismarck. Now they only need the players to go along with their great coaching staff. I grew up playing with and against Peluso, and got to know him better in Duluth. What a great guy!! He had one of the best shot's I've ever seen. He's also a heck of a fisherman.
