  1. This is terrible.......

Montana State assistant arrested on suspicion of selling meth

    September 13, 2003

BOZEMAN, Mont. (AP) -- Montana State assistant head football coach Joe O'Brien was arrested Friday on methamphetamine charges, authorities said.

The school suspended him with pay.

O'Brien, 30, was jailed in Broadwater County on one count of possessing methamphetamine and one count of possessing methamphetamine with intent to distribute, both felonies, Detective Matt Collar of the Missouri River Drug Task Force told the Bozeman Daily Chronicle.

Calls from The Associated Press to the county district attorney Friday night were not returned.

``We will be suspending Joe O'Brien with pay pending the results of a further investigation,'' Cathy Conover, director of university relations, said in a statement released hours after O'Brien's arrest.

She said that is in line with school policy for all employees charged with a felony, and added the school would launch an internal investigation if necessary.

Neither head football coach Mike Kramer nor athletic director Peter Fields were available to comment on the arrest Friday.

Bail has not been set in the case, and O'Brien may remain in jail through the weekend until a judge is available.

Collar said O'Brien ``was arrested during a controlled delivery of methamphetamine.''

The amount of meth O'Brien had and other circumstances surrounding the arrest were unavailable.

Montana State's football team has the weekend off.

O'Brien was promoted to assistant head football coach this year, after three successful seasons as a defensive line coach.

O'Brien was an All-America defensive lineman at Boise State in 1994 when he was voted the Big Sky Conference defensive player of the year.

Last year, Montana State removed redshirt freshman running back Shem Hardnette from the football team after he was arrested in September on a felony possession of marijuana charge.

  2. Valdosta over Miami?:glare: I would say there is a bit of a credibility problem with that one!!! I do find some of the Massey rating interesting. It really is the only rating that puts all together.....and that gives us good stuff to talk about on these boards. Kind of a mid-week football fix....

  3. Weber State is weak and CSU is probably going to win the Mountain West this year. This one will be a blowout. Saturday I am going to see Wyoming play Kansas at Laramie......probably another blowout, but not as bad a CSU pounding Weber will be.

  4. I was a huge Babich critic, but a lot of these players are Babich players. I think Babich was just not a good coach, but he did have an eye for talent. Bohl coached an incredible game in the second half and the players gave him thier all. And we all know that on "Any Given Saturday" anything can happen. I would think that now this should get the Bison taken seriously as NCC contender this season.......And how about those Jack taking apart NWMSU.....quite a day for the NCC.

  5. Two things....The quality of the Webcast of the Crookston game was much better than I expected. Not like watching TV, but for people that don't have access to anything else it is great.

And second.......... HOW ABOUT THOSE BISON. Look out D2. We are in the hunt for the title!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Montana is a great program and it is humbling to have a win over them!! :glare::huh::p:)

  6. UNO being picked as high as it was makes no sense to me. I also think the Bison may very well surprise people in the NCC as long as we are not plagued by injuries. With Tony Stauss at QB and holes filled by JUCO transfers, the Bison could be the dark horse of the conference.

  7. Yes, in sports other than football NDSU will be competing with all other D1 programs for championships. Much of the discussion has centered around the ability to compete in football. In my opinion NDSU will do fine in that arena since it is D1AA. Basketball is another story completely. We as NDSU fans will have to be happy with a first or second round appearance in the NCAA tourney from time to time, or an occasional NIT slot.

  8. OK.....I am dying to know....why was h5322rsh banned from the board? What he said was a bit inflamatory, but was still relevant to the debate. It smacks a little bit of censorship. :)

  9. I used to live in Greenville, SC and I know that North Greenville College is probably student wise about the same size as Mayville State, with a smaller campus and no decent athletic teams. This is crazy that they can be D2. :)

  10. Actually I think NDSU has done a lot of house cleaning. I think one of the biggest questions for NDSU will be the O-line. If that comes together we should be a contender. As I have said before, if NDSU comes out of its first 3 games 2-1 or better, the Bison will be a national contender. I am really looking forward to fall and the start of football season. I almost hate to say it, but I am ready to bid summer goodbye.......

  11. It will be interesting to see how the fans at Montana handle this new football conference as it starts to come of age. Montana is used to being the only dominant force in the West, but I think that will change.

  12. OK....I give up. Who in the Heck were Bohl and Taylor paired with (at the Maris golf tourney);)? Being so far from the valley I miss a few of these interesting little items. What is the story here?
