  1. We currently sit #12 in the pairwise.

To show how crucial the non-conference games are, our pairwise would be significantly better if we could have won the UMass and/or Mich. State games.

Win over UMass only, pairwise would be #8.

Win over MSU only, pairwise would be #7.

Win both, pairwise we would be #5.

With the switch of just two games we would be discussing the chances of a #1 seed instead of fighting to get off the bubble.

I didnt think that one or two games would make such a difference. I have no idea how the ranking system works but that is ridiculous. one win or loss should not make such a difference.

  2. This is just simply amazing!!! I have to agree with many others that I didn't think this was possible this season. I never fully doubted them and never turned against them, but what a turnaround! After making road trips to watch them in Duluth and even more recently in Bemidji, this is a completely different looking team from even last weekend. Now, for God sakes keep the lines the same and let's do this!!! Sure it is only one weekend of hockey and there are many things that the Gophers have going against them such as not having Lucia, Stoa, being on the road, etc. but the way the Sioux look is unbelievable!!!

I agree, they do look like a completely new team, this goopher sweep really showed us what the Sioux are capable of if they come to play, the only problem will be to get them to play as if it were a goopher series every weekend.

It is only a few weeks into this half of the season and things are looking up, but there is a long way to go, if they can keep this up or even keep improving week by week, the Sioux will be a FORCE to be reckoned with.

  3. so you are obviously saying that hak must run a complete different program that any coach in the nation ? we have only played 12 games this year so far and i hope to god the guys arent fatigued already. that would be a very very bad sign if so. i dont think that but am just saying. isnt the break from late april to september long enough to get ready for a college hockey season or am i missing your point here and if i am than my bad? they simply arent good right now and have a great opportunity to get 2 big wins vs the #2 team in the pairwise rankings so lets hope they start turning the corner friday night!!

No, not necessarily, but he could be running the most intense program. I think i am explaining it wrong, but the best way to put it is this, think of herb brooks in miracle, He worked the players so hard until they hit breaking point, then started to ease the load off. that brings teams together and builds chemistry, and i think it is entirely possible that is what hak does, Somebody has to have the most intense program in college hockey and it very well could be Haks program. I am NOT saying fatigue could be the reason they are playing POORLY, but it could be the reason why there is no intensity during games, why there is no intense forecheck, why there is no big hitting because MAYBE the players could be tired and fatigued.

  4. then explain why other teams start good ? i respect your opinion and im not saying that being a jerk but i dont agreebut i hear ya. the sioux havent played poorly 4 years in a row up until x-mas break. slower starts? sure they were but they also werent poor by any means. this stretch they are on now is poor. i think things will turn around and have confidence in hak and the staff but its hard to see any positives the last 2 weekends. who the hell knows why they seem to turn it around after x-mas break under hak. its very odd to see but he can coach and i think this years team will show that in the end. we have a long season ahead which is great and lets just hope they can find some chemistry in practice this week that leads to the games vs BIG RED

as to your question does hak push a magic button? lets hope he still has it i the office if so

oh well, it makes for great message board spit and at the end of the day......... long live fighting sioux hockey

I am guessing that most other teams may not have such an intense conditioning schedule, especially in the first half. i agree that this season seems a little worse than previous, but i still know what they are capable of, and if chemistry is found then this team will be an absolute force. It will take time and hopefully things will turnaround again.

Maybe this is all part of Haks plan to get everybody to doubt him, and just when everybody is ready to count them out he "flicks that switch" or "pushes that button" and they start playing like we all know they should.

And i couldnt agree more with your last line!!!

PS. I think we all gotta relax and SUPPORT the Sioux right now, and not criticize them whenever we get the chance.

GO SIOUX and i love you all...... except you Gopherz

  5. Except... they don't really get much of a break over the semester break. After finals are done, they probably head home for a few days and are back by the day after christmas i would guess....there's always games over break. So I don't think the rest has anything to do with it. Honestly, I don't think there's any real reason why we play better at the end. It just happens... there doesn't always have to be an explanation for it... if it happens this year, great... if it doesn't well...

Exactly, a few days off is the perfect cure for muscle fatigue. And i think there is a reason behind the slow starts for the last 3-4 seasons, there is to much consistency and a clear pattern is shown hence there must be a reason behind it.

  6. I am not ready to through anyone under the bus, but how can one tell when a team is out coached versus out hustled?

I am once again going to do a bit of guessing here (so AZSIOUX get ready to comment on this one also) but I ...THINK... (notice how i said think) that bad coaching leads to players out of position and bunched on the ice, or the player with the puck having no options and turning over the puck, and when either (a) your offense is shut down easily, indicating wrongly suited offensive systems for the opposition or even league, or (b) when defense is being beaten by passing plays and open skaters, indicating the defense are not sure where to be and which players to pickup. these things generally come down to the lines and the team where the positions of the players is the main flaw.

Out hustled is when a team is beaten in the battles on a more individual basis, like down low in the corners 1 on 1, or when a team is beaten to the puck when they are the closest to it, and when a defender gets walked around by one of the other teams forward. these things generally come down to the individual players not the team or the line on the ice.

  7. fatigued?? really aussie? come on man. these guys come into september camp in shape these days and if you dont then you wont be playing college hockey at this level. thats one of the worse excuses iver ever heard for a bad team at this point of the season. sorry. not buying it and never ever will. go sioux

joe finley is missed badly overall. he isnt the reason the sioux ae 3 games under .500 but he is a huge part of this team. with or without joe on the team they still arent scoring and have been brutal on the PP. hope they turn it around vs cornell

I am not saying fatigue is the only reason they are playing badly, but for a hockey team to play with lots of intensity you need to be well conditioned and fresh (which the Sioux may not be fresh) so i am saying that it could very well be a factor. Its not an excuse by any means, it is just a possible explination for the reason the Sioux start the season slow.

Fatigue and overtraining is extremely common in world class athletes, and it is likely to be a factor with the Sioux. Think about it... the last, what... 4 seasons, the Sioux have played poorly up to the christmas break, after a little time off from training to rest and recover they come back on fire, there is something there and to look at all the things that could contribute to this i think overtraining could be a major part of it. Unless there is a magic switch that Hak flicks to get the Sioux to play well after christmas, i cant think of any logical reason why each season the Sioux suddenly turn things around after the break. Can you??

  8. I am going to do a bit of guessing here but i think that the Sioux could be a little fatigued right now. I think i said this last year but, generally the structure of a hockey season is to work on conditioning and fitness in the first half of the season, really put the players through hell to get them fit and fast, then start to lighten the load in the second half and really focus on systems and the on ice play, then taper off when the playoffs are near so the players are energised and ready to play hard hockey. This is probably what Hak is doing to the players, i would guess that they are working really hard off the ice ATM, but when the focus is shifted to the on ice work and the systems things will start to click (hopefully), and the fact that there are a few injuries doesnt help the players fatigue either.

Secondly, we all know this team is capable of doing great things, but just because things aern't clicking yet doesnt mean they won't click in the future. Look at the lines each week, they are getting moved around like lottery balls, when chemistry is found on the lines then things will start to click more and more, and hopefully will lead to some great play by the Sioux.

Finally, they say that "The darkest hour is right before dawn" so hopefully when things seem they can not get any worse for the Sioux (which is right about now) things will turn around and the Sioux will start playing like they should and start putting up big wins.

This is my opinion if you disagree....... whatever!

  9. a Concussion. concussions are very serious as im sure you know. you never know how a body will react to a concussion until a couple weeks after for the most part and obviously its not minor. lets hope he can come back after the new year and get back into this lineup that an really use him.

wow i have never heard of a concussion lasting more than a week. i initially thought that was a coverup for a more serious injury. well it is very unfortunate. i hope he gets well soon.

  10. no suprise on joe. it was mentioned that he should be out until after the new year. get better joe!!

so miller should be on the blueline again im assumng and fienhage would be the 7th d man as of now and hopefuly on the trip barring injuries. or maybe corey plays over someone else as i dont see blood sitting anytime soon. i do hope we see mario in friday then go from there as i like the intensity he plays with. not sure who to sit though. im glad hak has to make that decision :) go sioux

Joe Finley is still out. He's out indefinitely, coach Dave Hakstol said. He was not at practice.

Evan Trupp and Andrew Kozek should be back in the lineup on Friday. Hakstol said that scratching them was not personal and that it was a two-part equation. He said the one part of the equation that everyone is missing is that he wanted to get guys like Mario Lamoureux and Brent Davidson into the lineup. Lamoureux is expected to travel to Duluth and could be in the lineup again this weekend.

What is wrong with Finley? i thought it was minor to begin with but it has turned into a SERIOUS injury. What happened to him? (if there is anyone from other WCHA teams please ignore this post and future posts, cheers)

  11. it doesnt matter if you are a freshman or senior at this level. you play who gives the team a better chance to win. period. bottom line. to favor a freshman? thats not happening by accident. he has the und's only wins and has been solid for the most part. this isnt little league where everyone gets to play a period. i think aaron has done himself a hell of a job to where hes at even right now on this team from where he came in at but this is brads team to netmind and it will be for many years. go sioux, sweep the dogzzzzzzzzzzz

I agree, but i think Eidsness needs time to really get comfortable in big situations in this league. Sure... he has played very well up to this point, and i think he should be the starter without question, but the bigger the situation the more a goalie needs experience. He will need to get a lot more games in, so that come March, during the playoffs, he will feel comfortable and more importantly... CONFIDENT!!! This is so he can step up his game and play better by feeding off the big situation rather than having no experience and choking. I just hope he continues along the path he is on right now, if he does the Sioux will have every reason to play well infront of him.

  12. OBVIOUSLY you haven't ready my BLOG it is the best thing since..... something really good happened.

OK i may be drunk but i believe that my BLOG is a perfect balance of - Pure Excellence and an Australian with an obsession with the Fighting Sioux!!! What else does the world need but my blog!!! Honestly!!!

  13. Ran into TJ Oshie at the new Red pepper. He had a walking boot on his left foot. He said that they don't know yet how long he'll be out. He was hanging with Trupp and Chay.

He is in Grand Forks already? he must be out for a while if he has left the team already, i think
