  1. I was at the North/Central game last night.... And the conclusion I've come to is that ALL refs are just RETARDED!!! There were so many fricken penalties, and the refs just kept blowing the whistle, I felt like I was watching a football game on ice!! The refs were calling the littlest things too, while letting the obvious ones slip away!! Seriously, read a rulebook guys!

Anyways, to the guy who asked if North was good or the state was bad.... It's the beginning of the season dude, let the teams play some games before judging who's good or bad. Just saying. It's only been like 4 games or somethin like that. Let's worry in like January after watching the teams...

But yeah in conclusion to the North/Central game last night..... Central was taking way too many penalties, both teams were taking dumb penalties, both teams were pulling dumb moves, the parents and fans get way too into the game, and refs are stupid... And 2 of the Central guys got kicked out, and their coaches don't really pay attention to anything. My brother like hurt the Central goalie and you could clearly see he was in pain, and the coaches didn't even notice anything till the refs stopped the game to ask if he was ok... And after the Central guys got kicked out, the coaches looked really confused so one of them finally went after them lol

Oh yeah, some of the Central students went and stood behind North's bench and the penalty box is right next to it, and the announcer says "Security guard to the penalty box please" and those guys ran like pansies to get away from there. Dude, the Purpur doesn't even have security guards haha! And some kid yelled "We want Shepherd!" Thought that was pretty funny too!! Oh and did anyone know that Lee Marvin is one of the coaches for Central?? And some guy who looked like Chris Porter was driving the zamboni lol

OK, end rant..... GO FIGHTING SIOUX!!! SWEEP THE BADGERS!!

Hey dude, thanks for all the like good information but maybe next time if you could like leave out a few "likes," it would be easier to read.

    Ok, end of rant...thanks dude

  2. Sounds like North picked up another impressive win tonight 3-1 over Central at Purpur. Spartans are 4-0, these guys remind me a lot of West Fargo last year. Any word on Red River-Jamestown?

Also Devils Lake hosts Grafton tomorrow in a huge EDC game, it's contender or pretender time for the Firebirds. I like Grafton 5-3, any other predictions?

I just got word that Red River had another dominating victory defeating Jamestown 6-1. Sophomore Russel Crary netted three goals and added an assist to increase his season point total to 15 in just 4 games. Granted the competition hasnt been good, but still not a bad way to start your high school career.

On a different note, I also recieved word that Grand Forks Centrals Alex Simonson quit the team a couple days ago. I do not know details on the situation, so if anybody else knows more please share with the rest of us.

  3. I believe the state is down in general. Here is a look at some of the players that graduated last year that are playing at the next level.

    Paul Weisgarber- USHL

    Andy Dittus- USHL

    Tyler Jundt- USHL

    Erick Galt- USHL/NAHL

    Marc Mihulka-NAHL

    Marc Harrie- NAHL

    Grant Larson- NAHL

    Alex Olson- NAHL

    Adam Campbell- Concordia

Nick Klenow- I hear he's playing, where?

Then dynamic forwards Thomas and Paul Campbell, Ross Monson, and Justin Connell. Eli Rosendahl also graduated who was an able bodied goaltender to say the least for GFRR last season. Grafton also graduated a very good (maybe off the wall, but good) goaltender in Tony Kringstad. Fargo North graduated there starting goaltender in Justin Welk. Many teams lost many key players.

These are just some of the big names from last season. Other players who may have been talented enough to move on in hockey chose to hang up the skates last season as well. I do not believe there will be 10 players from this years senior class who will be able to fill that many spots in the Junior ranks.

Jake Delisle who was a defenseman for Red River last year is also still playing. He is playing for the Junior B St. Malo Warriors of the KJHL. Besides this, Matt Marchell was also off to a great start with the UofM Crookston before re-injuring his back a couple weeks ago. He may need to have a minor surgery on it if no improvement is shown in the next few days.

  4. Shanley will be one of the better teams in the State in 3-4 years. Good luck with that. They could be one of the worst high school hockey teams I have ever seen put together. They will be luck if they are not fighting to get out of the cellar in 3-4 years.

Although I hate to disagree with you riders06, you may be wrong on this one. Shanley is a bad team this year and no one can argue that. But they do have some quality underclassmen that will lead the program the next few years. I do not know if Shanley will be contending for a state title in the next 3-4 years, but they will be a drastically improved program. Shanleys success in the coming years will be determined by home many kids in the Fargo Angels program actually go to Shanley for high school. If all of the Angels kids end up going there, as planned, Shanley will be a quality team in the state in the coming years.

  5. #31 A C is going to be a great netminder for the club .......... he is off to a real solid start so far!

Does anybody else think Anthony might be our best goltender since Karl Goerhing?

Anthony Greico has played a couple solid games, but for you to go ahead and compare him to Karl Goehring is absolutly asinine. He could not be rakned in the top 20 goalies in UND history at this point in his career. Think before you type next time...

  6. Dakota Hocky magazine has Red River picked as the number 1 team in the state this year. They are followed by Fargo South, Minot, Devils Lake, and Grafton.

Is this the same Dakota Hockey magazine that had Red River picked to finish somewhere near 6th last season? I wouldnt put to much faith in these predictions...Not saying that these are completely wrong, but i wouldnt get to excited over them.

  7. I was taken by surprise that Mario chose NMU over UND or Red Deer. If he wanted to play with a brother, he could have chosen to play with Phil at UND or Pierre at Red Deer. Northern Michigan is not going to be a super quality team ever, no offence to them. I think UND could win an NCAA title this year or next season, and Mario will wish he chose to play hockey with Phil at UND, no offence to Jacques. We missed out on Mario, in my opinion because of his parent's dis-interest with UND's handling of the goaltending situation the last two years. It's unfortunate that happened, but we missed out on having Grant Potulny and then Ryan Potulny and Danny Irmen because of their father too.

We don't really want players who will have parents that just meddle with the coaches' business, so Mario is better off at NMU. Good luck young Lammy, best of luck to you.

Everyone on this board who continues to make speculations about possible reasons for Marios signing with Northern Michigan should take a good look at themselves. You all are certain that the reason is because the Lamoureux father is unhappy with the coaching situation at UND, yet none of you really know. So lets go ahead and get everybody on this board in an uproar because Phil and his family are unhappy with the coaches at UND. Has anybody ever concidered that maybe Mario thought Northern Michigan was a better fit for him than UND. Top prospects do not always choose the school that is on top at the time, maybe Mario and the Lamoureuxs saw somthing they really like at UNM. Unless anybody finds out the real reason for Marios signing lets quit making speculations and cutting down not only a couple players but a hole family. The Lamoureuxs are all quality people and nobody should be talking about them in this regard.

  8. I don't know if #34 for Fargo South has been mentioned enough on here. That would be Sean Deichert for those of you don't remember him from last season. All of us hockey fans should know this, goalies can steal games. He will steal a few games this year.

I agree completely. Deichert was one of the top goalies in the state last year, if not the top, and he will continue to get nothing but better. I see Deichert puting up some ridiculous numbers this year due to his ability, and the quality of team he has around him. Sean is also a very classy kid so its great to see him do well.

  9. Anyone have predictions on who will be the best line in the state this year?

This will depend on whether coaches decide to stack one line or balance the talent out throughout a couple/few lines. With Powers, Doeden, Graalum, and McBain Fargo South will have the ability to stack one line while still having plenty of talent left for the other 3 lines. They will be able to combine any two or three of the players listed above and have a very good line. Grafton will also be able to put together a solid first line with the return of Miller, Anderson and Hills. Besides, these teams, Red River, although they will count on balance, will have the ability to put together a quality line with the likes of Meland, Vigen, Lundby and Erickson. We also have to remember that whenever Red River has Ladeuceur and Galbreath on the ice they have the ability to make any forwards look very good.

  10. Minot had a couple of teams that would have competed with high school teams around the state. Granted, that was over ten years ago. Recently, the GF gold team was unbelievable about 5 or 6 years ago. Their top line put any high school top line to shame. Each of them had aleast 120 points apeice. They also played a heavy MN schedule.

First of all, the Grand Forks Gold team has only been around for about 3 years, before that there was only the Stallions. I have lived in Grand Forks for a long time and have watched lots of high school and junior gold hockey and i can guarantee you that there has never been a single player on a junior gold roster in Grand Forks who was better than a single player on a Red River or Central varsity roster. Obviously people will disagree with me but the bottom line is that kids that play Junior Gold do so for a reason...more often than not it is because they have either been cut from the high school team or else they just realize there is no way they will make the high school team.

  11. What about Zach Miller, Ian Powers, or Tyler Klein. Don't you think any of those could be one of the best in the state? Miller really impresses me...

I can see Miller and Klein being a couple of the best all around forwards in the state along with Meland but im not sure about Powers. He might put up a few points, but I doubt he will put up as many as he did last year. We have to remember that he played with two of the top players in the state in Weisgarber and Larson last year.

  12. I have often been ridiculed but I feel the exact same way. When he's hot there is no one else I would rather have in net, hopefully the streakiness goes away, and the consistency shows with more confidence in being the number 1 guy. I guess we'll just have to wait and see

I hate to break it to you, but phil is more fundamentally sound than jordan parise is. I am not saying that phil is a better goalie but if you noticed, parise put himself in situations where he would have to make an outstanding save several times in each game last year which is a direct result of him being out of position in most cases. When phil has the chance to be the main guy and gets to play every game he will put himself up with UND's elite goaltenders as far as save% and goals agaisnt average. UND is in good hands with Phil as their stater.

  13. There is no doubt Burdick will make Varsity he is just as good as lets say Vigen or any other player of that age group. And who really care Flyers or Bruins they all wine the same...

Do they all "wine" the same, or do they all "whine" the same, because "wine" just doesnt work in that context...sorry buddy.

  14. I understand that ur trying to get wurden some recognition and by all means he deserves it. But to say ladouceur is underrated is a joke...Galbreath gets more attention being he played as a freshmen but ladouceur has quickly caught up to him and has just as much if not more potential than galbreath...and "knowsall"...all u do is brag these two up, u want me to try and get u their phone numbers...

Save yourself the time buddy...I already have their numbers. These two deserve every bit of what i am saying about them. They are both great hockey players and even better kids off the ice.

  15. Seriously-

Have a daughter that starts playing hockey and you'll become a fan. I dunno, I think that there is something kinda cool about the avatar taking a pic of her favorite player out of the middle of a program and sticking it up on the glass during the game.......even if I did sit back and laugh at her.

Maybe it's because when I was young we had no female athletes to look up to.......now they do.

I guess the bottom line is........little girls can become anything they want to, so don't get in my daughters way, she'll slam you into the boards and look back and laugh when you fall down into a heap on the ice. Believe me, I'll be laughing too.

Im sorry mam but your argument isnt holding any water. I actually have a younger sister who is very involved in hockey, and i encourage her to keep playing. My point is that this program has had a few years to develop now and it isnt going anywhere. Their record isnt really improving any and neither is the attendance. The last think i would like to comment on, is your threatening remarks about your daughter slamming me into the boards. Not only is this uncalled for but it is also quite laughable...I challenge your daughter to slam me into the boards and look back and laugh when i fall into a heap on the ice. Quite frankly, i dont see this happening any time soon...sorry

  16. Sssh. i think that he thinks that he was being clever. Don't burst his bubble.

Come on now, dont start hatin on me just because i am truthful...i would guess that the majority of the people in this town feel the same way...they just wont come on here and say it

  17. this question is a little confusing to me. When you ask if the program is going in the right direction, what exactly is the right direction? I voted "YES," because to me, the right direction is down the toilet. Thats just my opinion though.

  18. I suppose his dad recieved a job offer in the fargo area that was just to good to pass up. Im sorry, but i think it is ridiculous for a high school kids family to relocate so he can play a year with a different high school team. I happen to think that a little thing called loyalty is a little bit more important than getting a state championship ring. I dont think that McBain will become a better prospect if he is playing for fargo south. If he is truely the player that he is made out to be, he will be able to make a name for himself wherever he plays. I really hope that Fargo South does not end up winning the state title is this news is true.

So you're making a generalization off no actual basis? For all you know the move could have nothing to do with hockey (academics, family move), or even a coach telling his player to leave. And then to go on and say that you hope a group of kids doesn't get to win what they work their entire lives to that point to accomplish based off the choice of one kid? That's a little extreme to me, but I guess you can somehow justify that.

  19. I've been hearing a lot about David Spies, and his ability to hit a baseball. He will be playing for the Fighting Sioux baseball team and he will be on a scholarship. Scources have said he batted in the range of .470 for the Royals the past season. If anyone has any info on this top prospect please let me know. I also heard he was regocnized on the Field Turf at the Dome for winning a field of dreams scholarship. Sounds like a class act.

From what i have heard, david spies is not only a top notch baseball player, but is even a better person off the field. When i read the following post I felt the need to do a little research, so i went to my sources and ended up scratching out Grand Forks legion baseball coach Gabe Dahls phone number. According to Dahl, Spies hit more in the 350 range this past season, but last season he broke the Royals single season batting average record batting somewhere near 470 which is very impressive. According to Dahl, Spies will be red-shirted his first year with the Green and White but his role off the field will be as important as any starting senior. David will be in charge of scouting opposing teams offensive tendencies along with scouting pitchers from around the league. Dahl says that Spies is such an intelligent kid that he tends to see things that normally gets by even the best coaches. Off the field Mr. Spies has been very active in the community for several years...He has been adopting and housing battered pets from the local humane society since he was only 10 years old. Besides helping the k-9 population of the area, spies has also been very active in the elderly community. He recently started a program called "Homers with Seniors," in which he gathers several elderly folks from senior homes around the community and teaches them the basics of americas favorite pasttime, as well as teaching some "strategic planning" with the more advance students of the game." I would not only look for David Spies in the Grand Forks herald sports section, but i would keep my eyes on CNN and USA Today, because this kid will go on to much bigger and better things....Good luck to Mr. Spies in all his future endeavors, from all of us at Sioux Sports!

  20. Williston hockey has improved leaps and bounds since the early 90's. Back when I started playing traveling hockey we would romp Williston constantly, and most of the games ended up with running time. As I got older they started getting better and better, and the games got a whole lot closer. Nowadays when Williston beats Minot or Bismarck it really isn't considered an upset. Yeah they have a little ways to go to catch up to the Fargo South's/Red River's/Central/etc. of the world, but it seems like their high school team gets better every season.

Dickinson is like Williston in the fact that they are also much improved, but I personally don't believe that hockey has caught on in Dickinson quite yet. A couple years ago they made the state high school tournament which is huge for a young program, but they've kind of taken their lumps the past couple of years. I still believe they belong in high school hockey (although others here will tell you differently) and hopefully in the near future the game will catch on in Dickyville. Like I've always believed, the growth of hockey in a small state like North Dakota is HUGE!

I think we are getting a little trigger-happy thinking that Williston is suddenly going to be competitive year in and year out in the west region, much less the state. Williston has had a couple good groups of players, most every school has experienced a year or two in which they succeed, but in most cases it is not very long lived. Maybe last year williston beating the bismarcks and minots would not be concidered as much of an upset, but to say that this trend is going to continue and the gap will continue to close is a little premature. When was the last time you remember saying that central beating west fargo was an upset? I cant remember the last time that was the case, and i dont think it will happen again for a long time. This is just an example of how some things change every year and some things, (such as red river, fargo south, grafton, bismarck and minot being in the state tournament) are more likely to happen than the sun rising each morning. However, a change in the standings from year to year is fun to see and keeps us guessing.
